20" 2nd display on 24" iMac?

I was looking at getting a 24" iMac. I have a perfectly good Dell 20" widescreen digital LCD. Can I hook up different resolution monitor from the primary one and still have it extend the desktop?

Yes you can. I do it all the time using a Spyder 2 Pro. Each monitor has its own profile and its very handy to ensure that your original monitor is properly calibrated.
Even though one of my monitors is an ole Nec FP950+, in terms of color, its very very close to the iMac's screen and essentially identical. You only see if there's any difference by looking at the color numbers and even those are extremely similar.

  • Using an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?

    Hi all,
is it possible to use an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?
I guess it depends (if at all possible) on the models, right?
Would it be possible with two of the currently available iMac 27" models?
Is it just connecting the two video jacks with a cable? That would mean that the jack is input AND output connector at the same time: the video signal would be output from iMac 1 and serve as input for iMac 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

Awesome, David! Thank you! That helped a lot!
Additional question: because running applications on the target-display-mode-iMac keep running: will I be able to connect from the source iMac to the target-mode-iMac via OS X's Share Screen functionality? So that I can still USE the 2nd (target-display-mode) iMac for running applications and accessing them? Or is the iMac in target display mode really just a dumb display? Will ssh'ing to it work?
A little background: programs like Cubase and Logic work really great with two screens. Additionally, some audio plugins really need a lot of CPU power and some of those can actually distribute the number crunching via the LAN to other computers. So my thought is: run Cubase on iMac #1, use iMac #2 as a 2nd screen (will work, thanks to David's reply) AND use iMac #2's CPU, too, to help some Cubase plugins' number crunching. Would that work?
    Thanks a lot,
    Stefan.

  • 2nd display connected to iMac stays black (Thunderbolt - HDMI)

    Hi everyone,
with my new iMac (purchased 2 weeks ago) I have the problem that my 2nd display will stay black after I connected it to the Thunderbolt port. The display shows the blue background for a split second, then i goes black (and stays that way). I find the following lines in the log file:

The display is an AOC e2343F2, with two HDMI and one VGA port. I am using a Mini-Displayport to HDMI cable to connect the display. This worked with my Mac Pro (from 2006, AMD Radeon HD5770) without a problem.
Is this a problem with the in 10.7.x included drivers?
    With the new Thunderbolt port?
I tried it with 10.7.2 and 10.7.3 on the iMac and the Mac Pro. It works like a charm on the Mac Pro, but not on the iMac. Do I need to buy the overpriced Apple adapter and can't use my adapter cable anymore?

Just a theory.  Looking at the log errors you showed the system cannot get the display bounds.  My theory is that the display is not able to pass the EDID (extended display identification data) through a TB port.  While your 5770 could handle it the TB can't.  Again, it's just my theory.
Another thing to check is your Displays system preferences.  See if the Display is showing in the Arrangement tab.  If so click Detect Displays and also Gather Windows to bring the second monitor's Displays preferences on to your main monitor.  If you get this far then set the appropriate resolution and refresh rate (if refresh rate is shown).
If there is no Displays Arrangement tab then the system doesn't even know the second monitor is connected.  I don't have a solution for this problem since I don't have TB.   Although the resolution is not as good you may have to try a VGA adapter for that monitor.  No guarantees that will work either of course.

  • 2nd display for my iMac - Recommendations?

    Hi,
    I have a 24 inches 2009 iMac.
I would like to add a second display. Nothing too big - something like 19-20 inches.
    Any recommendation? brands, model?
Any brands come with the mini display connector?
What are the characteristics I should be looking for the ensure I get acceptable performance (let say similar to the display of my iMac) and good integration with the Mac?
    Thanks

In many shops you can filter on specs.
    Exclude screens with TN panels
Include screens with DisplayPort (DVI or HDMI is possible too, but the adapters are more expensive)
Set size to maximum 22" (most displays are 21-22 inch nowadays, 19 inch ones are DODO's).
    Things you will find are:
    HP ZR22W
    Dell Ultrasharp U2212HM

  • 2nd Display & iMac w/ 2 Different Sets of Content from Same iMac

Can I do this?  (How can I do this?) I'd like to connect a second display to my iMac and use the iMac to generate content (like live feeds or video content from CNN.com) to play on the second display while I "work" on the iMac and its screen. Thus, each display have its own content--but the content is generated by the one iMac.  Could I use a HD tv as the second display?
    Thanks for your guidance.
    Bill

Depends on the iMac, but some of them do support this.
Look yours up at  http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html  and look for the section about displays and 2nd display support under your model.
With the second display connected to the appropriate port, you use your Displays System Preferences to configure them. If you choose "mirror" both displays show the same thing. If you choose to not mirror, you can have an "extended desktop where you can place different windows on different monitors and do exactly what you want to do. AN HD TV might be usable but you have to look up what your iMac can handle in terms of pixels and resolution and compare that to your HD TV specs. You can certainly buy inexpensive monitors to use if your HD TV is compatible.

  • 2nd Display not working on iMAC

I have a 2nd display that has recently stopped working with my iMAC - I had issues with the second monitor before I upgraded to 10.9 - then the problems went away ... had a bad storm one night and power flickered on / off.  And can't get it to work since.  I know the monitor / cord is good because i have an Mac Air and I plug it in and it comes right up and works great.  I cleared the system log - unplugged and replugged the monitor in.. i don't see any errors in the system log..  can anyone see what is wrong? I cleared the log and put a marker on each side of the output.. I looks to me to see it - it say display added then right after that display removed..

You can attempt to use Apple Hardware Test, if you do run it in Extended Mode 2-3 times. It's not the most reliable test however if it does locate an error that confirms you have a hardware fault that needs to be fixed. The ONLY alternative is to take it in for service. However IMHO I'd take it in to an Apple Store or AASP anyway, because A) AHT is not that reliable and B) even if it does find something that means you have to take it in.

  • 20 inch 2.4Ghz iMac with 2nd Display

Is there anyone out there using a 20 or 24 inch 2.4Ghz iMac with a 2nd Display with Aperture?
I'm interested to know if Aperture 2 will perform adequately, or whether the demanding graphics requirements of Aperture will be over-extending the iMac graphics card with a second display.
My dilemma is that my G5 with Radeon 9600 graphics doesn't really cut the mustard, and the display of my 20 inch iMac isn't suitable for critical image editing applications due to the graduation in screen brightness from top to bottom; so until I can justify the move to a Mac Pro, my options are either getting the (increasingly hard to get) x800 XT card for the G5, or (and maybe the better option?) a second display for the iMac.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Forrest Smyth

Thanks Mark - yes I have an iMac as well as a G5 with AGP graphics and the 9600 card, so it's a toss up between buying a second display for the iMac, or a x800 XT card for the G5. My iMac also has 4Gb of ram compared to the G5's 3Gb.
My thinking is that by going the iMac with a second display route, I will have the advantage of two displays for not a lot more than the cost of an x800 XT card (if I can find one), in a system that is [possibly] snappier running Aperture. The fly in the ointment could be the extra overhead of a second display on the iMac - so I'm hoping someone who is running Aperture with dual displays on an iMac might read this and provide some feedback.

  • Imac [plus 2nd display - can you work with one display rotated 90 degrees?

I'm thinking of getting a Dell Ultrasharp 24" monitor to use as a 2nd screen from my iMac 20". The Dell screen seems to rotate 90 degrees so you can view it landscape or portrait. If you're working with 2 displays functioning as one giant desktop, can you rotate the 2nd display 90 degrees, and still use the 2 monitors as a giant desktop?
Any advice much appreciated - thank you!

Leopard has a built-in feature for rotating the display. It's in System Preferences Displays pane. You can select to rotate the image 90, 180, or 270 degrees. It even works for my massive 21-inch CRT that I use with my iMac as the extended desktop, although it would be very difficult to physically use that monitor in portrait orientation.
So what you are describing should work.

  • IMac does not recognize 2nd display

I have read about 100 forums concerning this process and I must say that I am lost. I am trying to connect a second display to my iMac but when I go to system preferences/display and click on detect display, nothing happens. The arrangement tab does not appear between the display and color tabs.
My second display is a 19" Sony TFT LCD display with VGA plug. I have a VGA to DVI adapter that I connected a DVI to mini-DVI adapter to. I then plugged the mini-DVI adapter into my iMAC. The iMac screen went blue for about 2 seconds and then returned to the normal desktop screen but my second display did not do anything. I am trying to use this second display to extend my desktop not mirror it.
Can anyone help me out with this problem. Right now I am wondering if:
    1. My iMac does not support this second display.
    2. My DVI to mini-DVI cable is bad.
    3. My install of leopard did not install software needed to add/recognize second display.
I can confirm that the display works; I was recently using on both a PC desktop and laptop.

I have a similar problem but it happened suddenly. I bought the mini-DVI to VGA converter and every thing was working fine. Then the second display just stopped waking up. Now when I hit "Detect Displays" nothing happens. I'm pretty sure that the problem is not the display. I've read elsewhere that these converters are flakey. Maybe I'll have to go back to the store and have them check it out.

  • Have iMac mid 2007 using Mavericks . . . will not function with new 2nd display?

Sys Prefs setup with 2nd display using Mavericks . . . the new functions of Mav won't come in with LG display even though same display works with my other Macs. Any like experiences or advise would be more than appreciated?   bumdiago

    Shawn:
One thing that caused the refresh to stop working is when you have error or bad settings in your report. Expand your upper right control panel or EVDRE area and see if everything is good. For instance, an EVDRE usually gives an error message rather than displaying (EVDRE OK) at upper right.
Also, did your input template refresh the data properly every time after you sent your data? If so, you may convert your input template to a report, and see if that will solve your problem.
    Hope my 2 cents helps...

  • Problem with LCD display on 17" iMac G4

The LCD display on my iMac went wacky on me yesterday. It's as though one of the three primary colors no longer works. The screen has a green tinge to it, and anything that's supposed to be black shows up as green. I've reset everything, run the Hardware Tools diagnostics (no problems found), and changed resloutions, monitor depth, and brightness levels many times. No luck. The screen is readable although very ugly.
Obviously I can take it to an Apple Store, but does anyone have any idea what it might be? I've searched the net and the forums and can't find anything close, but I know I can't be the only one to experience this problem. I called a mac repair shop a few minutes ago, and they said that the logic board would need to be replaced. I just can't believe that because nothing else is a problem.
    Please help. Thanks.
    17" iMac G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I "fixed" the problem a few days ago. Digging around here in the forums, I found another thread that gave explicit instructions on how to open the iMac and re-seat the connections. Here is the link (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196785&start=30&tstart=30). It's a post from Androcles made on 3/26/06.
Just as he indicates, when I did this I found nothing to be loose at all, however upon putting it all back together, on the 2nd re-boot all was back to normal and still is. It's amazing how clear and crisp the screen is after suffering through the green hue for a few weeks...
Good luck, and feel free to ask me for help if necessary.

  • Mac Mini - Running Final Cut Express - Output to a 2nd display

Anyway of using Final cut Express to output to a 2nd display on a Mac Mini. I know out of the box it only supports either vga or dvi (1 monitor).
What does final cut express require for this option to work? A 2nd video card?
    Thanks

    hey there,
i believe Matrox has a device called 2 heads to go. never used it but it reads well. you might want to Google "Matrox", go to their 'site & investigate. also if you're editing SD DV, you can use your cam FW'd to the Mac & set to DV in & VTR/VCR mode & connect the cam to a TV or monitor. i used to do this w/ my iMac.
    good luck.

  • Unable to drag any content to 2nd display monitor

    iMac 2011. Mavericks 10.9.5
I have connected the 2nd monitor to the iMac with a newly purchased mini display port to VGA adaptor. The cursor shows up on the 2nd monitor but I am not able to drag any open document or file or any content whatsoever from the iMac onto the 2nd monitor. I have tried resizing the size of the content as the 2nd monitor is smaller than the imac screen but no luck and yet the cursor is able to move freely between the two displays. I have tried playing with all the settings in 'Display' but still no luck. There is a wall paper and a tool bar display on the 2nd monitor and the cursor shows up as previously stated but I cannot drag content oAny suggestions?

Not sure if this will fix it, but it might. Open System Preferences, click Mission Control, and if "Displays Have Separate Spaces" is turned on, turn that off. As it says, you should then log out and back in (or restart). Then try again to move the content to the second monitor.

  • What do I need to setup a 2nd display?

I went from a Mac Mini to an iMac 5K. The Mac Mini display was also my TV. Still using it as my TV, but would like to know what I'd need to connect it to the iMac 5K as a 2nd display. Also, by doing so, would I still be able to easily switch it from 2nd display to TV?

Do you recommend a certain brand Mini-display port to HDMI adapter? I looked on the Apple store page as well as Amazon. The reviews of the ones I looked at weren't great. They all seem to either be defective or die within a year.

  • Disabling Mission Control on 2nd Display

I am using an iMac with 2nd display configured for video output, so that what the software (ProPresenter, in this instance - could equally apply to Keynote or PowerPoint, for example) is showing on the 2nd display goes to our video switcher and projector screens while our main display shows the software user interface.
The problem is that when I trigger Mission Control or use a hotkey to clear the desktop, it does the same thing to the 2nd display. Is there a way to disable this so that the picture on the 2nd display stays in place (whether natively in Lion or through use of 3rd party tools)? It's extremely unprofessional, and I've had my operators accidentally use Mission Control when the output is live on our switcher - looks really goofy. I suppose I could simply disable Mission Control hot keys, but why waste such a valuable productivity feature?
    Thanks... Mike B.

It's extremely unprofessional, and I've had my operators accidentally use Mission Control when the output is live on our switcher - looks really goofy. I suppose I could simply disable Mission Control hot keys, but why waste such a valuable productivity feature?
    Thanks... Mike B.
