20-30 second beach ball in finder on 2011 27" iMac running Mavericks 10.9.3

When I click back an forth between an application and the finder I get a prolonged 20-25 second beachball. I have repaired permissions, reset PRAM, Restarted after unplugging, all the standard procedures, nothing helped. System was working fine, seems to have startd with my most recent upgrade to 10.9.3

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Spinning "Beach Ball" in Finder

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro running OS10.9.5. I recently noticed that whenever I double-click on an icon in the Finder the "spinning beach ball" occurs for about 20 seconds. Afterwards, the page will then load. This problem does not occur in any app; only the Finder.
I wold appreciate any thoughts as to why this issue occurred all of a sudden. Thank you kindly.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Just got a 2012 MacBook Air, Refurbished, 8 MB RAM, 256 GB. It's refurbished by Apple. I run SugarSync. On my third day, the finder beach ball started spinning almost every time I clicked on the Apple menu or the Finder icon in the dock or any folder on the desktop. I couldn't get down to force-quit finder without first clicking on a program's open window and then on the Apple menu. Restarting doesn't solve it, either. The other thing that was occurring was that my Air was running very hot, the fan was running hard, and the battery was racing to be at 10%.
Thanks to macjack, I seem to have a solution. I've just retitled the information so others can find it better. Here it is:
1. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete SugarSync ( - ) as a login item (don't worry, this doesn't delete the program and you can always add it back as a login item with the ( + ) after all the steps below to solve the problem.
2. Quit the SugarSync program (to do this, click on its icon on your top menu bar and select Quit).
3. Go to Username/Library/Preferences folder, and trash the SugarSync "plist" file, which is: com.sharpcast.SugarSync.plist (this is the corrupted file that's causing your finder problem; and, don't worry, a new, clean plist file for SugarSync with all your information left untouched will be created the next time you open SugarSync).
4. Empty your trash; then restart your computer.
5. Upon restart, open the SugarSync program and you should now have no Finder, spinning-beach-ball problems. The fan should be off now and battery power creeping slowly down instead of racing to 10%.
6. Finally, put SugarSync back on your Startup at Login list by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items, hitting the ( + ), and navigating to choose it.
You should be beach-ball free now, with no intense battery drain, heat, and fan.

Beach Ball of Death on my 24" iMac 2.8GHz duo, 4 MB Ram, 750 GB HD

Hello all:
Maybe I got one of the first ones off the line? Ordered it on release day in September.
I'm having Beach Ball problems, lots of freezes in Firefox, Excel, SLOOOOWWW response on saves, goofy problems dragging and dropping files. Coupla Hard restarts, LOTS of restarts.
Anybody else out there with same/similar problems?

I keep getting the same thing, using similar software. I am running a slightly older iMac - 24" 2.33MHz (pre-aluminum), with 2GB RAM and a 500 GB hard drive.
Over time, the crashes get worse, and eventually the system software needs to be reinstalled. About six months ago, I decided to partition the hard drive in the hope that I could isolate the problem to the boot partition and save other files/data. This DOES work - only the boot partition goes bad. Disk Warrior can't rebuild it, but it make a lot of repairs and does recover most of the files. But this never fixes it - it seems to be a stop-gap, and eventually the partition fails again.
I just reinstalled the system software after another crash today that killed the partition. I have read about the "iMac Update 1.1" as being a potential culprit, so I am not doing any updates.
I have been keeping Console running, hoping to get a clue. Everything it reports is far too arcane for me to understand, but here are some expamples of what it reports:

Server freeze all services stop responding, beach ball in Finder

I have an os x server running 10.6.3, all updates. Services running include iChat, iCal, Web, VPN, DNS, Open Directory. It is experiencing completely random freezes where it will become completely unresponsive and the Finder will totally lock up. I can not get to via ARD, SSH, VPN is down. Cannot connect to the server via iChat and the jabber accounts. Here is a sample of the system.log output when I believe the crash started.

We've had this problem as well. Our xServe (10.6.3, 24Gb ram) is only running Web, AFP and SMB with Xinet running as well (mySQL). Our problem stems from directoryServices processes that cease working.
At times -- before Finder fails, ssh fails, ard fails -- we have had success with killing the DirectoryServices PID, which automatically restarts and thankfully restores functionality to the server. Unfortunately if we're too late, then Finder fails, etc. and the only solution we've found so far is to force a restart by power-cycling the xServe....definitely not the preferred solution.
Just had to reboot the server now.
Rumor has it that TimeMachine might be the issue, but it isn't running on our xServes, so it's still rumor.
This scenario didn't happen in 10.6.2 and seems to be 10.6.3. We had a case # setup with Apple Support and after a few hours on the phone we were told that this is a known issue and Engineering is working on it.
In your case you're having a LOT of segmentation faults. Try running a repair permissions on your disk and it wouldn't hurt to check out your hostname/dns info (as root: changeip -checkhostname)

Spinning beach ball of death after crash with fans running full speed

I recently put my machine to sleep - came in the next morning to find it running all fans at full speed and frozen. Did a hard reset (power button in for 5 seconds waited 15 secs and then power on. It rebooted after a long re-boot period. Since then it has slowed down. Many apps take an age to open. Many freeze and there is the infamous SBoD. I have rebuilt permissions, installed 10.5.8 combo, done a permission repair from a separate firewire disk, run onyx - which at time never ends and has to be aborted. Activity monitor shows no exceptional activity when the SBoD is running. I had significant issues until last December when i did a clean rebuild and installation of leopard and put all essential software in from clean install disks - all in all had a pristine machine which was working perfectly until the week before last when the full fan and freeze crash occurred. I notice that it speeded up after the 10.5.8 combo install and permission rebuild from external disk but gradually slows down and gets increasingly unstable requiring forced reboots more and more often. I have no hacks or other background processes other than Virus Barrier 6 which ran perfectly before the crash.

As expected after running well at about 11:40 Mail slowed down and the SBoD started.

Hi, I have an iMac running Mavericks that I am trying to hook up an older HDTV as a second HD monitor through the minidisplay port to component 3 color RCA. HDMI is not an option with this set. I have SD working, but need to find a HD conversion set up.

Presently I have a mini display port>VGA adaptor, running to a convertor box I picked up that handles S-video out, which is working fine for SD. I also have a VGA to Component Video (5 wire RCA) adaptor cable. Connecting Component adaptor dircetly to the mini display adaptor doesn't seem to work, neither does plugging it into a VGA port on the SD convertor box. I am guessing there is another convertor box out there that will help me make the transition from mini display to Component. Even if it means having a handful of adaptors plugged in. does anyone know where to find such a wonderful and magical device?

Your setup works fine for DV, because you used a DV deck and most likely DV footage. But now you are working with 720p HD footage (what format, BTW? HDV, dvcpro HD?). That same setup won't work for monitoring HD. Now you need an HD box or card to send out a proper HD signal. And since you have an older G5, you won't find any current solutions. You'll have to look at used capture cards that are PCIx. Or you and look at the Matrox MXO, that connects to the computer via a monitor connection. DVI.

Beach ball and very slow to respond IMac

Each mouse click produces beachball and very slow response times -minutes, and some functions will not respond at all -Safari.

Please confirm that you are actually on OS 10.6.2?
And, which Mac model/year?
Then please check how much of your hard drive space remains empty/available.
And, lastly, check how much RAM you have installed.

How do you close a finder window on an iMac running Mountain Lion by double clicking on the top of the window like I can on my Macbook Air?

When I bought my Macbook Air in 2011, ( leopard on purchase - now mountain lion) I discovered how to close open Finder windows by double clicking at the top of the window. I have just bought an iMac (mountain lion) and for the life of me cant find out how to do the same. Finder preferences are no help. Can anyone out there be of some?

I know what you are referring to. In both cases, the window is minimized, but on your MacBook Air, your Finder window is minimized onto the Finder icon, and on the iMac, on the right side of the Dock.
To change this on your iMac, open System Preferences > Dock, and mark "Minimize windows into application icon"

ITunes 10.0.1 - beach balls with every move

My iTunes 10.0.1 (22) has become so slow with almost every move I make (selecting a song, play/stop, updating info, etc) which results in about a 5-10 second beach ball. I noticed my standard Real Mem usage is running between 600MB-900MB with CPU spiking over 90% with every move. I've reinstalled OSX (10.6.4), iTunes, rebuilt my Library via Consolidation but same. Now my standard Library is large (~170,000 songs stored all on a firewire 2TB drive - which I know is not the norm. But as an experiment I set up a new user built a new library local, added about 5,000 songs and similar results. Also to playback any video via iTunes is almost unusable as it stops and stutters all the way.
Any thoughts? Also is there anyone with a similar size library that can share what their normal memory usage is? This has become so painful to use but with the time invested in building this library with all the details it is out of the questions on changing to something else.

Since you are experiencing problems in more then one user account, follow the instructions here under: Try Disk Utility Check the startup disk for errors just in case.
Check for free disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

Seeing LOTS of beach balls!

Lately I have been seeing TONS of beach balls and delays. For instance, I play a clip, pause for a moment, hit play again, and get a beach ball for a good 20 seconds before playback resumes. I click on a menu in the menu bar and it sits for a good 10-12 seconds before the menu drops down. I move the scrubber from one place to another and I get a 10-15 second beach ball before I see the new frame in the viewer.
This seems to not be isolated in FCP. Even while typing this, halfway through a sentence, it will beach ball for no reason.
Looking at my performance meters, my main drive has 400GB empty, I am only using a small portion of my RAM, and the CPU is nearly idol.
Any ideas would be awesome!

Regardless, balls usually indicate network or other processor chores interfering with FCP's unusually unreasonable demands for all services. Open Activity Monitor, see if anything looks weird to you. Don't Kill Process, that can get you into trouble. Instead, quit everything, restart, repair permissions if you think that will make you feel better, and launch Activity Monitor before you launch FCP.

Spinning beach ball for 45-60 seconds, then fine

For several months now, I've had the spinning beach ball issue on my Macbook Pro. Within the first 5 minutes after boot up, the spinning beach ball will occur, seemingly at random (no specific app or action), for 45-60 seconds. While this happens, the system becomes completely unresponsive. But after this occurrence within the first five minutes after startup, it never happens again and everything is fine - until I reboot of course.
I am running Snow Leopard and this problem was happening before I installed Snow Leopard, so that's not it. But one thing I did do, which I am semi-convinced is the culprit, is I replaced my hard drive with a Seagate 500 mb Momentus drive. The actual model # is SEAST9500420AS. I don't know for sure, but that's around the time this issue first started. I know there is/was a spinning beach ball problem with the newer Macbook Pros and they were attributing it to the hard drive which just so happens to be the same hard drive I now have in my Macbook Pro. There was recently an EFI update that seemed to fix the problem for the newer models, but mine is the first generation right when they went to Intel chips (bought mine in April, 2006). Problem is, if it is my drive, this new EFI update that fixes the issue on the new models won't install on mine.
I also did a verify disk and repair disk permissions, but that was no help. Another thing I found going through the discussion groups was that the problem could happen because both the Macbook Pro and the Seagate drive have anti-shock technology that could conflict with one another. So if you disabled the anti-shock on the Macbook Pro, it might solve the problem as it seemed to for some folks out there. But I did that and it didn't help either.
I'm thinking it's my hard drive, but don't know how to fix it. But it could be something I haven't looked at yet or thought of. I've been trying everything the last several months with no luck and it's been driving me batty! What's really strange is it only happens once and always within the first 5 minutes after start up. I just finished doing lots of different tests to try to solve my problem. Didn't resolve it, but I did manage to eliminate some things and narrow it down further.
First I removed all my login items and restarted my computer. That didn't fix the problem.
So then I thought it might have something to do with Safari since that's one of the first things I open up when I start my computer and there are numerous reports in the discussions of spinning beach balls with Safari 4.0.3 which I have. So I purposely did not open Safari after startup. Problem still happened.
So then I thought maybe it has something to do with my internet connection. So I disconnected my internet connection and rebooted. Then I only opened programs that don't use online access. I leisurely opened up a program, did a few things in it, closed it, and then did the same thing with another program. Did some things with Finder. Purposely did not rush things. Waited 4-5 seconds after every operation's completion before executing another task. Never had more than one program open at any given time to eliminate any issue with two many resources open. You guessed it - the problem STILL happened. Not that it matters, but it happened when I hit Command-I on my hard drive icon to get the info pane. A fairly innocuous task. Froze up with the spinning beach ball for at least 45-50 seconds. Tried clicking a few other things while this was happening, but nothing. Once it freed up, a few things I clicked on previously suddenly became active and everything was fine again. Tried Command-I for a lot of different things with no problem. Response was instantaneous.
It pretty much happens 3-4 minutes into a session and then never happens again. And I think my test here eliminated several possibilities. Very frustrating. I hope this helps someone come up with a possible solution. Thanks.

Finder periodically plagued with Spinning Beach Ball of Death

Could someone who understands MacOS X internals please explain to me why the finder needs to wait for an external Firewire drive to spin up to:
1. Open an app from the doc. (sbbod until the FW drive spins up)
2. Quit an app via right clicking the dock icon of the app. (shows 'Application not Responding' until FW drive spins up then
'quit' is the available choice)
3. Get a running program to respond. (sbbod then app responds as usual when FW drive spins up)
Let me set the scene. I do not have 'put drives to sleep' in energy saver. Spotlight is configured to ignore all of my external volumes. None of my apps use the external volumes for scratch or anything else. I rarely if ever directly save to an external volume from any application. I cannot change the behavior of the FW drive going into Stand-By mode (I've checked with Seagate and the feature is not changeable via firmware or dip-switch/jumper settings)
My only thought is poor filesystem buffer cache management. Problem is even that doesn't make sense. If I haven't read from or written to the external drives there shouldn't be ANY in memory buffers associated with the now in stand-by state firewire drive.
The SBBOD usually only takes 5-10 seconds to go away and Finder behavior to return to normal. I know it sounds 'petty' but it definitely is a flaw in what is supposed to be (and usually is) a very responsive GUI. I've experienced this annoying behavior with the standard Apple apps (Mail, Address Book, iCal, iTunes etc) and my 3rd party apps (Photoshop CS3, Excel, Word, Cisco VPN client. I'm thinking about writing a crontab entry to 'touch' the FW drive every few minutes to keep it spun up as a workaround.
Running 10.6.1 and hoping Apple would have gotten it right with this release.

AFAIK, the Seagate bare HDs don't have that limitation. At least the 750 GB SATA, ST3750640AS, one doesn't have the standby mode. Neither do any in that family. LP 9.1.1 stalls every 4 seconds with beach ball

i have not used my LP and imac for over 3 weeks, i returned to my studio and had a chance to record something only to find out every time i click on anything i get a beach ball, even if i just select to stop.

I restarted, removed any start up application and even shut off internet to see whats going on and i still can not get past this stuttering with a beach ball, it just comes up with anything i do, every 4 to 6 seconds i see a beach-ball.

yes this is a problem, i see spotlight indexing all the time and thought it was normal, can i stop this junk?
