20" ACD test

Should a 20" cinema display still be able to power on with only the AC cable plugged in (no DVI USB or Firewire cables connected)?
I am trying to test this display out to see if it at least powers on, before I purchase it "used" and I don't have an ADC to DVI adapter yet to connect it to my G4 tower.
please advise.
thanks.

Maybe I should have posted this in the OS forum as I've done some troubleshooting and I think it's the upgrade to 10.5 (although I don't know why).
When I hook it up to my MacBook as a mirrored monitor it does NOT display the pixelization...my next thing will be to down-grade back to 10.4 and see if it does it....

  • I give up, 23" ACD's are just to problematic.

This thread is just my experiences in trying to find an acceptable display in the 23" HD Aluminum series, there is no scientific testing just my personal viewing results after testing 12+ displays and a whole lot fo restocking fee's. Half of the displays were tested from Apple the rest were tested from purchases at another authorized box store reseller.
I am currently using a 23" HD Cinema display that is roughly 12 days old which suffers from an array of issues that are far to common with these panels, in 12+ 23" ACD's every single one has had issues, here are some general findings and while every one knows of these already I just thought I would consolodate a bit since I tested so many 23" apple displays.
    Most common issues:
. Stuck Pixels (White/Red) every display I have tested has at no less than 1 stuck red and up to 5 red/white, this does not count dead (black) pixels.
. Extreme backlight bleeding: I have yet to test a single 23" ACD that does not sufer from serious backlight bleeding, I have seem (1) out of 12+ that has an acceptable level of bleeding, but they all suffer from serious problems in a dark room set to black background.
. Ghosting: This actually was totally random, lets say out 12 displays tested, 5-6 displays ghosting while the others did not. The odd thing is that some of the displays ghosting was very minimal and some of the displays were terrible in this regard. I have also seen some displays that only suffer from ghosting in select areas of the panel.
. Pink Hues: This is common, almost every panel I tested suffered from this issue, but it varies greatly from display to display, some of the displays would be extremely pink while others display a moderate hue. very few of the tested displays offered even grey tones which is where the pink hues are most noticible.
. Verticlal and Horizontal banding lines: This was the most rare of the issues I have seen, maybe 2-3 panels I had tested and even the current one in my posetion suffers from this issue. In a dark room with a black background you can see un even lines that look like faint grey/black tones running both horizontal and vertical. I had been told by apple this is how the technology works, but that was clearly wrong since the banding is un even and it did not appear on the majority of my displays tested.
. Brightness/Contrast: This is a problem for me, each display I tested had varying results, none of my tests were scientific just to my eye type testing. But some displays were really bright and looked vivid and sharp while others looked dull and and did not have the brightness the others panels did, this was dissapointing, because once you get a good one you can see how great the high brightness looks on these displays/
In the end, I have tested far to many of these displays and have payed far to much money in restocking fee's to apple in hopes of finding an acceptable display.
I must be honest and say at 1st I had very high standards and felt that for 1299.00 I should be getting a 100% perfect display, but that was not going to happen no matter what brand I went with, I simply did not understand the technology enough and where it is at in regards to what is acceptable these for this point in time with an LCD.
I have seriously lowered my standards and am willing to accept some backlight bleeding, and even a stuck pixel or 2 (though I would like to not have any pixel issues, I can live with the backlight).
I also have (2) 20" Aluminum ACD's that are for the most part perfect and (4) iMacs that have perfect screens so this leads me to think its just that the 23" displays are of poor standards.
I am not researching the Eizo 24" widescreens in hopes of finding a display the does not suffer from banding, ghosting and poor backlighting. Its a bit more money, but why settle for s display that has so many issues just to support the brand, in the end should we have to settle at all?
    Cheers!

    Well,
Its a pretty looking display and there is a 50/50 chance you may get a panel that is acceptable for you. Alot of this really comes down to how sensitive you are to these sorts of issues and greatly dependent on what type of setting the display will be in.
As an example, most of these issues are not noticable in a bright natural setting with sunlight, pixel issues are random so again its all about chance.
I wanted this display to be great, its gorgeous and looks great with a G5 tower, but its not all that its cracked up to be. Take this with a grain of salt, there are plenty of people who love their 23" ACD's, I am just simply writing about my situation.
Keep in mind, if you purchase from the Apple store and find any of these issues I wrote about, you will be subjected to a 10% restocking fee each time you want to swap it out, so 129.00 a pop to see if you got a decent one.
I would suggest if you set on a 23" buy from a reseller that does not charge a restocking fee incase you get a display with issues.
One last thing, if your deciding between the Apple and the Dell, they both use the exact same LG panel, the only differences is the electronics of how its backlit and such (this is fact), the dell can be found for hundreds less if you catch them on a good sale day, just one thing to consider.
    Cheers!

  • How Can I Test New Apple Cinema Display?

My new 30" Apple Cinema Display arrived today but the arrival of my MacBook Pro is still 4 weeks out (I ordered both at the same time for dual warranty purposes). I cannot hook this ACD to my wife's 12" PB and the only other computer that may have the ability is my daughter's new iMac Intel Core Duo (but I'm not sure if it will power the 30" ACD). I would like to test for stuck or dead pixels. Can I plug the AC cord into an outlet and no video connection then power on or will this show no pixel anomolies, or worse, cause potential harm to my display? Anyone? Thanks to all that may reply.
PS: I threatened to cancel my order unless the Supervisor allowed me time to evaluate the new monitor the full 2 weeks AFTER the arrival of my MacBook Pro, so I have plenty of time, just no computer to run the darn thing!
PowerBook G4 12" aluminum & iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Apple 30" Cinema Display w/ iLift LCD monitor arm

I think pretty much any Mac with DVI will drive the 30" ACD, just not at the native resolution. You will get 1280x800. But if you are just looking at a solid full screen of a single color, for the purpose of trying to spot dead/stuck pixles, the low res shouldn't make any difference at all for such purposes.

  • New 30" acd & old 23" acd problems

    Hey
Last week my 23” 2-year-old acd power bar completely died. With Apple care, I had it replaced in store. Once I got home, when I powdered on the display the screen was full of dust spots, sandwiched between the LCD and the protective screen. So the next day I was back in the apple store. We were all puzzled on how the dust got in there, but since you can’t just clean it they placed an order for a replacement monitor. I took this one back home...so far so good.
For the past few weeks I was toying with the idea of getting a 30” acd, so the next day I went to another apple store (it was on my way) and picked a brand new one. Got home, plugged it in...and what the...! First, the backlight bleeding at the bottom left and right corners was terrible. Left bleed was sort of extending upwards, in a weird spiral. But that’s not all...I replaced the background with a solid white, and to my surprise, left quarter of the display was shifting towards blue.
I didn’t go to the apple store right away, i actually waited to get the 23” replacement. After few days i picked it up, came home, plugged it in, and again...more troubles. The white background didn’t match at all. The 30” was white, with that annoying shift towards blue on the left, and the 23” was just yellowish/pinkish.
Off the the apple store yet again. First, we dealt with the 23” - waiting for yet another replacement. Then the 30”. I tried 2 monitors in the store and BOTH had the same blue shift on the left. The backlight bleeding was uniform on those two new, but that shift was present on both. I wasn’t happy, but i took the 2nd display (3rd 30” i tried) just to see how i’d feel using it...and so far, I can’t stand it. All i see is the blue on the white background.
just today i replaced my old sypder 2 with eye-one display 2 calibrating device. I ran multiple tests on the 30” monitor (center, bot/bottom left and right) and found out that the left side of the monitor is quit a bit different. The blue linear curve on is quite a bit off at the top (at about 240) on the left calibration point comparing to the center. Reds and greens are off in colorant tristimulus (when checking the profiles), and the tristimulus value is off towards the blue on left calibartion when looking at the chart. It's there, it's visible.
Now, i’m trying to calibrate the 23” and 30”, trying to get the same white look. No luck!
This is driving me insane. Same panel technology, same manufacturer, two different colors. And the 30”....all where made in korea...is it possible its a bad batch or something. I’ve never seen anything like this with any display I owned or worked on, from a cheap 200$ panel to 1000$ 24” - none had backlight bleeding, much less any color shifts.
I do a lot of post image post processing (advanced amateur photographer), and this is simply unacceptable. As far as I'm concerned i own 3.5 thousand pixels that are complete worthless...
I’ll hit the apple store tomorrow with the 30”, again. I don’t think i’m expecting a lot from a 2,000$ display.
I’d really appreciate help, comments, anything that could help...
    Thanks
    adrian

    Update:
picked up a brand new 30" - this one is great - uniform backlight, no weird colour shifts, just ever so slightly less bright at corners, no dead/stuck pixels. later on today I'm going to pick up the new 23" that just arrived...will test it in store.

  • Gave up my 23" ACD and moved to Eizo CE240W - No comparison..

    Hi all,
Well as you may have recently read I have been on a serious hunt for an acceptable 23" ACD, I tested no joke about 12+ and payed a bunch in restocking fee's, as I had posted every single display had serious flaws regarding stuck pixels and severe backlight bleeding.
The Eizo CE240W was only a couple of hundred more and I can happily report that this display has not a single stuck pixel (well visble) its backlight is perfect and shows no bleeding what so ever, the backs are very deep and finally grey tones are grey again, I thought at one point I had a very neutral 23" ACD but I was sorely mistaken .
The Eizo has brilliant color and grey tones are truely even and displayed as they should.
Its not as fancy looking as the ACD is, though the screen is a hint larger, the base has far more position ability and the software provided is superb.
I just got so tired of looking for an ACD that wassant completely screwy. the 23" displays suffer from an array of issues and after testing 12+ its apparant its not a random thing.
Put your 23" in a pitch black room and use a pixel tool to set the background to solid black, you will see serious issues, its like pink/grey/blacking clouds sprinkled with stuck red pixels.
I dot know how many people will find this post interesting, but I can say that if you need a good display in a WS format thats 24" the Eizo is great.
the ONLY issue I have right now with the Eizo is that the very far left screen seems to render slightly lighter than the rest of the screen. I have been told this is due to the way the displays are fabricated and that each LCD uses some metal to reflect lighting accross the panel and this is what causes this.
Even with this, it only shows in mid tones and does not effect the perfect backlighting.
    Just wanted to share.
    Cheers!

So basically you're giving this monitor two thumbs up. This is the display I'm looking at.

  • ACD as main display under Windows/BootCamp while in clamshell possible?

Is there any way to run a BootCamp Windows XP Pro installation on an MBP using the ACD as main display while in clamshell mode? Currently the system refuses to wake up after I close the lid. I use a BT mouse/KB, but even with a USB mouse connected it wouldn't wake up. It seems like it would be possible, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Correct, there was no Gather Windows button.
I do have multiple adapters, but one is an Apple adapter which is, apparently, "passive" whilst the other is active. The passive adapter never works at all under MacOS X, but I haven't tried it under Windows. The "active" adapter works under Windows, but only shows the apple bootup logo under MacOS X, and then turns the display off.
I don't think that the mini displayport is faulty, because the second display plugged into it works perfectly through BootCamp.
I'll try thoroughly testing out all adapters tonight, and then try a different brand of display. I've seen a lot of posts about ViewSonics being flakey under MacOS X, so it's possible it could be on the display driver side of things. Maybe ViewSonic does something screwy signal-wise in their displays, and Windows is willing to deal with it but MacOS X isn't.
Oddly enough, the ViewSonic display I have was shipped with a single-link DVI cable, and it's always worked without a problem, even when plugged into the dual-link DVI port on the Mac Pro. So I don't believe that the display *itself* requires a complete dual-link connection to the computer.
I have much appreciation for all the help and suggestions. Thanks again.

  • ACD Monitor / DVI Adapter not Displaying

I just purchased an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition and installed it in my Quicksilver as the original card stopped working (lotsa noises coupled with no display on ACD or DVI monitor). I also purchased Apple's DVI to ADC adapter to connect it to my Apple LCD monitor.
After installing the card and hooking up the adapter, the monitor's white power button comes on, but there's only a black screen. I've hooked up another DVI monitor to the Quicksilver and can confirm the new video card is working. I've tried using the ACD monitor with the adapter on a PowerBook, and the laptop recognizes there's a second monitor, but there is still the black screen. If I push the power button on the monitor while connected to the laptop, then disconnect the monitor, the "Do you want to shut down your computer?" dialog box has popped up on the laptop's screen, so it would seem that there's at least communication between the computer and monitor. Unfortunately, I don't have any other ADC compatible computers to test the monitor independently, but have had no problems with it prior to the old video card going bad.
Could the adapter or monitor be bad, or is there something else that could be interfering with the operation?

(dual running the DVI adapted ADC and a VGA (as main) right now)
No luck with the reset. I got a garbled screen in place of the Apple loading screen, but then it started up fine. Still displays on the VGA, but black on the ADC monitor. Apple System Profiler shows this under Graphics/Displays if it is of any help:

  • Dell 14z to 24" ACD - Will this work?

    Hi,
I was thinking of getting a Dell 14z laptop which has a DisplayPort out. I found this product online: Mini Displayport Female to Displayport Male Adapter Cable. I could then use a 24" ACD, correct?
Here is the link: http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-Female-to-Displaypor t-Male-Adapter-Cable.html
So theoretically I could connect my Dell Display Port> Adapter> ACD.
Has anyone had luck with this? Will the iSight, speakers, etc work once the USB is connected?
I searched days for a solution like this and almost seems to good to be true. Any reason this would be a bad setup. Anyone not recommend this?
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Ben

    Welcome, to Discussions, Ben
If you get no better help here, this is the best I can offer. I don't know how helpful this will be, but this poster is using an ACD with his XP machine.

You might watch his thread(s) on the subject to see how things progress.
Only you know how much money is a lot _for you_. However, *if it were me*, I would ask both the Dell folks and the Apple retailer. If either of them were unsure that there will be no problems, I would ask for an on-site test or written return privileges before spending that much money.

  • ACD 20" Color Flicker

    Hi,
Twice today the ACD 20” hooked up (via a Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter) to a MBP 17“ 2.33GHz, started to flicker, deep red/ purple, back to normal, then a few moments later the same thing.
I turned everything off, unplugged all connections then plugged everything back in again and so far (I’m still holding my breath) everything appears to be OK, but what does this flickering mean?
Is it possible to apply some individual test to either the graphic card or the ACD so that I have some clue if this is the beginning of the end for this LCD?

OK found this, it’s not a solution, but for reference sake I thought I would post it.

  • Can I switch on ACD 23" without connecting it to laptop at all?

I've just now bought an Apple Cinema Display 23" and I connected it to power source via power brick. It is not yet connected to the laptop (DVI socket) as I dont have a DVI to Mini-DVI adapter which I've just ordered.
I was expecting the LED light on the ACD to switch on or at least blink when connected to power source but it did not. Is my expectation incorrect. Will ACD at all come to life when connected to a laptop? Is there no way I can test if ACD itself is working without connecting it to any laptop?
The reason I want to do this is the person I bought the ACD from didn't know if it was working or not and I dont want to spend any more money on it if I can find out whether it'll work or not without connecting to a laptop.

    Thanks for your response Malcolm.
I bought the thunderbolt to DVI adapter and connected my Apple mac book pro to the ACD23 now and was hoping that it'll show some signs of life atleast. But it was as dead as it has ever been. There is not even a slight blink on its LED or change in screen color. My suspicion is that its power adapter has gone bad but checking its price, it is too costly to take a risk buying it without being 100% sure this is the issue.
Has anyone else faced a similar issue and if so, would you recommend me to buy a new power adapter?

  • MBP 17" 2010: horizontal lines extending out from open windows on 30" ACD?

I have a mid-2010 17" I7 with anti-glare screen. The topcase was replaced for factory damage and now the screen was replaced by Apple here in Paris, where I live. I use the MBP with a 30" ACD at home, with no problems until I picked up the repaired MBP yesterday with new screen. I now notice that when I open a window, like Safari or Mail, the lines (let's call it the lower line that frames the menu bar in grey on the top of each open window) seems to extend beyond the open window and run across the top of the entire 30" display. If I move the window, that line moves across the screen with it. It doesn't occur on the MBP screen itself, only on the attached 30". So that if you open Safari and place it in the center of the external display, you see the line running from the grey menu bar on top of the window extend out in both direction across the entire display. It has no effect within the windows you are looking at all, but this wasn't there, or I never noticed it before. I changed the desktop background to see if it changed, and basically not, except it is not viewable so much with light or white background.
There is no effect within the windows being viewed. It's as if the line running out from the frame of the window, especially the bottom part of the grey menu bar on top, are extending out across the screen.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It turns out that I tested my 30" ACD with a friends Macbook and it has the same phenomenon. It's quite strange. The darker the blue or grey the more this line flows out from the grey bar frame on Safari or Mail windows. The smaller the window the less evident the phenomenon. Again, it has no effect on the windows themselves, and only occurs toward the top of the display. When you move the window down on the screen it disappears. And it is only the line below the grey upper bar that is rather bold that bleeds out across the screen.
I wonder if there is a way to reset the display or move to some default setting that would correct this.

  • Built-in isight on ACD not working.

    Hello,
I have a 24 inch mini-display port ACD w/built in isight for my mac pro 2008 harpertown. Problem, when I go to put my computer to sleep, the isight stops working, meaning I don't get any camera at all present on ichat av. Meaning, when I wake my computer, the isight doesn't come on requiring me to reboot my computer. Does anyone have an answer as to why the built in isight on the new 24 inch cinema display refuses to come on after waking the computer from sleep?

    You're welcome, Prittstickqueen
I am happy you found the Hardware Test Tools.
re: reinstall, I doubt that Reinstalling Mac OS X will cure a failure of System Profiler to recognize iSight, but I think it is worth a try because it is the only thing I can suggest other than going back to the store.
I have seen more users report fixes from proper application of the Combo Updaters (which I know you have already tried) than from reinstalling the OS. However, if you decide to try a reinstall, you can use the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (iNtel) to get back to 10.4.9 in one update step. That would give you the benefit of one more try at a "Combo" fix in addition to trying the reinstall that Apple suggests. (Repair permissions before and after the Combo install.)
Once fixed, other than future possible conflicts, I would think your iSight should work without further problem. If the OS fix or other suggestions here do not resolve your problem, your iSight is likely one of the few that needs professional repair by an Apple-Authorized Service Provider Technician.
If you are too far from anywhere, all Macs come with complimentary support during the first 90 days of ownership."
Following the links there lets you "Learn how to contact Apple for support and service." Therefore, if you cannot get back to the Apple Store, you have other options for support, but I hope you do not need to exercise them.
Good luck with the continued troubleshooting. We will watch for your status update.

  • PB won't wake up when connected to ACD

I have a brand new (day old) Aluminum PB with the following configuration:
    1. 1.67Ghz G4
    2. 1.5G RAM (DDR2 SDRAM)
    3. Mac OSX 10.4.3
It replaces a 3 year old Titanium running 10.4.3 which has never exhibited the problems below.
    -- GOOD SITUATIONS --
When NOT connected to the ACD, and the screensaver kicks in, I can wake the PB just fine.
When connected to the ACD, and I force "Sleep" mode, I can wake the PB just fine.
    -- MEDIOCRE SITUATIONS --
Sometimes, when the PB awakes, after a couple of minutes, the Finder stops responding and I get the spinning wheel of death. More on this in a separate posts "Finder Not Responding After PB Wakens"
-- BAD SITUATIONS (REASON FOR THE POSTING) --
HOWEVER, when connected to the ACD, and the screensaver kicks in and runs for more than a couple of minutes -OR- eventually goes to full sleep on its own, I cannot wake it.
When I try to wake it under these two circumstances, the PB sounds like it is awakening, and I get a black screen (screensaver goes away if not asleep), then I see my mouse pointer, then I get the spinning wheel of death and at that point it's all over (I can wait 10 minutes and nothing).
I've done a hardware test and all is OK according to the test.
I have done the following things to resolve and, yet, nothing works:
    1. Repaired Disk Permissions
    2. Cleared out my Login/Startup files
    3. Reset the PRAM
    4. Performed a control-option Restart (recommended before doing a PMU reset)
    5. Performed a PMU reset
I am at a complete loss. Please help!!!

    Powerbook G4 Aluminum   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I think I have narrowed the problem down to a USB issue (USB connection between the hub on the ACD (Apple Cinema Display) and the PB.
When I unplug the USB connector from the port, the login in window miraculously appears. Now, I need to track down the REASON for this.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Anybody NOT have backlight leakage with their "23 ACD?

I'm going to take back my "23 ACD to the photo store at which I bought it tomorrow but I have to convince the guy at the store that something is wrong with it in a well-lit room (this is Italy... don't get me started). I'm having the backlight leakage on the bottom of the screen. kind of bothersome when the room is dark and I'm working on photos with a lot of black in them.
Otherwise the display is perfect, and I'm wondering if there are any "perfect" 23" displays out there, considering all I've heard. I can only see the glow when it's dark and working on blacks.
I can already tell it's going to be hard to convince them I need it exchanged, and at best I can probably only do it once. I'm also worried that the next will be worse than the first.
Any thoughts? Anybody sure they don't have the backlight leakage and get perfect blacks in all parts of the screen even in a dark room? Am I being too obsessive over this?
    thanks

If yoyu want perfect blacks and no bleeding issues then the 23" is not going to work for you. The 20" how ever does not suffer from nearly as many of the issues the 23" does.
I have tested 12+ 23" displays and every single one of them had severe backlight bleeding. As a result in a dark room you will be unable to achieve deep blacks with this display.
Not to say its not a a nice monitor, but it has issues and for its price it does not hold up to other displays in its range.
I have been told by alot of retailers that many of them have moved the 23" into the pro-sumer level since it has issues that are not as prominent in the 20" or 30" range.
    Cheers!
