20" Cinema w/imac

Question(s)...
Will the MA589LL 20" intel imac (late 06-white- 2.16 cpu & X1600 radeon) support and drive an Apple M9177LL/A-A1081 20" Cinema Display?
What about the earlier 'white' 20" Display, M88932M-A?
My primary interest is as a second monitor for extended desk-top. If applicable, any info about actual performance, good or (bad?), would be welcome.
I have checked all the support/specs, and much discussions and only find requirements for G4 and G5 and PowerMacs but no info for 'intel imacs'... so I am a little reluctant to proceed with Apple Display.
Thank You for your help.

hey there ricmoozic & welcome to Discussions,
all Intel Macs, except the Mac Mini support dual displays in mirror or extended desktop mode, for the Aluminum CDs you need Mini DVI to DV adapter also you'll need a DVI to DVI cable coming of the adapter to connect to the CD. earlier White Lucite CDs used an ADC connector i don't think there is a mini DVI to ADC adapter-- you might be able to cobble 2 adapters together, but this isn't the best scenario. the newest displays use a new type of connection & i don't know if the adapters, which would be Mini DVI to Display Port are available. see this: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/macaccessories/displays?mco=MTE5NDE & this: http://support.apple.com/specs/#imac
i have my 17" iMac Core Duo connected to my 42" Sony HDTV w/ mini DVI to DVI adapter> DVI>HDMI cable.
good luck.

  • External monitor = cinema display problem

Hi All - new to the iMac, looooong time Mac user. So I had a 20" cinema display plugged in to my G4 before getting the iMac and now I am using it as a 2nd monitor (extended desktop). Love the added real estate!
My problem is this - if I plug my keyboard into the USB ports on the cinema, the iMac doesn't 'see' it. Yet if I plug my iPod cable into the FW400 ports it shows up fine and syncs with iTunes. Also, the keyboard WAS working plugged into the cinema display for a few days, but I had to unplug it and when I plugged it back in, no joy. I have restarted with it plugged and unplugged, repaired permissions (not like that'd help) and zapped the PRAM. Under System Profiler, the iPod will show up under the Firewire tab (as does the cinema display) but the keyboard does not show up under the USB tab.
So, can I 'force' the iMac to 'see' the keyboard? Any help will be appreciated and rewarded!

So the end that plugs into the Cinema Display splits a couple inches from the end into FW, USB, and DVI. What about the end that plugs into the iMac DVI out? Are there 3 ends to that as well? If so can you just unplug the USB portion of that cable from both the iMac and the Cinema Display and use a completely seperate cable to hook up the USB?

  • LCD as opposed to LED

Could someone help me to understand the difference between LCD and LED? I understand that my I-mac has a 24 inch wide active matrix LCD display. I read somewhere that the LED ones do not have mercury, etc. and are supposedly "safer" to use than LCD. This is somewhat alarming.....what are the dangers of using my LCD display?

They are both still LCD displays. The "LED" description applies only to how the LCD panel is backlit. Most LCD backlighting is done with +cold cathode fluorescent lamps+ (CCFL). They are somewhat like the fluorescent tubes that are used in office spaces. They supposedly have environmentally non-friendly stuff inside, if they are disposed of improperly.
Apple is starting to use LEDs for backlighting in some displays. LED backlighting (if done right) is supposed to provide more even lighting, and they do not fade in brightness over time like CCFL. Apple currently uses LED backlighting in the MacBook Pro models and the 24-inch Cinema Display. iMacs, the white MacBook, and even the 30-inch Cinema Display still use CCFL for backlighting.
In terms of being "alarming" or "dangerous" to the user, there is really no concern either way (as long as you are not planning to take apart your LCD panel).

  • Mac Pro arriving today!

There is SO much info here that it's hard to find all help that I may need. Am I even posting in the right forum?!
So, any help with what I may run into would be MOST appreciated!
I just read that Tiger has a small app in Utilities called Migration that may help move files and apps over to the new machine...does it take ALL the files (hidden ones, too)? Like including the payed versions of Roxio's Toast Titainium? (I can't find where my product key is!)
I am MOST concerned that my version of Photoshop (7) won't work on the Mac Pro_but have been told that it will run fine, (via Rosetta?) is this true?
So, as you can see, I will be grateful for ALL comments!

    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

All the advice I got prior to the arrival of my Mac Pro was to wipe the hard drive clean and start fresh with a new install. I was so antsy tho' I didn't want to wait and since I was transferring from one Intel system to another I figured if it didn't work, I'd wipe it clean and reinstall and then install the programs anew.
But it worked just fine. About a week later I was putting the Mac Pro box away, taking the items out of it for storage, when I realized Apple had not included any OSX disks at all. The machine was already preconfigured but still, I would need those disks should anything ever go wrong (of if I just wanted to boot from Disk 1 and use the utilities).
So I called and asked that the disks be mailed. The disks they sent were identified as "replacement" disks, not original OSX disks. It doesn't matter, of course, because they do the same thing but I wondered how a newbie might feel or do in such a situation.
So make sure your OSX disks are in the box, just in case. BTW, I've never had another reason to wipe out a hard disk and start anew. OSX just runs well for me. Every now and then I'll install a program that won't feel or sit right and when I verify the hard disk it will tell me to boot from Disk 1 and use the disk utility to correct the error.
As for the Office Demo ... when I bought the Mac Pro they offered me the option of throwing in a free (Canon, I think) color printer but I already had a fine HP Color Laserjet so I asked for (and got) Office for the Mac. So I never did see the Office demo product, the full version must have overwritten it.
But if you want to remove it without any residual files I suppose you could use something like AppZapper (which has a trial version that will allow you to zap three or five programs).

  • Can I use an Apple Cinema Display as a second monitor for my iMac?

I have a new 24" intel iMac and was wondering if I could use my old 20" Apple Cinema Display (aluminum) as a dual display. What cables do I need?

Just had a good look inside my box and nothing. Maybe it's a Apple UK thing
The back of my iMac does have a Mini DVI port so I'm gonna pop down the Apple store tomorrow morning to pick one up.
Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if I'm successful.

  • What do i need to connect my 30" cinema display as a second monitor to my new 27" imac?

I recently purchased a new iMac and want to run my 30" cinema display as a second monitor. My local mac experts told me to use a mini display to dvi adaptor, but that didn't work for any of my cinema displays - the 30" that i want to use and a 21" that I have. I called the guys back up and after a little research, he told me to get a mini display port to dual link dvi adapter. This costs $99, so I want to be sure it's going to work.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if there is a better idea, or ****, does the new iMac even except a 2nd monitor.
Thanks. Looking forward to your input.

Well I may have heard wrong, but I do not believe that you can hook that 6 year old monitor to the latest 27" iMacs with ThunderBolt. I would do more research before putting out the bucks, or make sure that you can return it if it does not work.
But do let us know if you try it and it works.

  • How to connect a apple cinema display to an imac

I have a brand new 27 inch iMac. I also own a 30 inch  Apple Cinema Display.  What peripheral adaptor do I need to connect the display to my new iMac?

    Hello,
Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort-> Dual Link DVi cable...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter
A notable peculiarity of Thunderbolt is that it uses exactly the same connector as Mini Display Port, and that's not all. The Thunderbolt connector also carries Mini Display Port video signals. That means you can plug a Mini Display Port video cable/adapter in to a Thunderbolt connector and your monitor will work.

  • Can I use a 30" Apple Cinema display with a new 27" iMac?

I have a brand new iMac(27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), i7 3.5 GHz, 32MB RAM, 4GB NVIDIA.  I will soon be upgrading it to Mavericks, if that makes a difference.  My understanding is that the resolution on it is 2560 x 1440.
I'm looking at buying a used 30" Apple Cinema display.  I'd like to use it with my new iMac.  The only advantage for me would be that the 30" screen is larger and things on it easier to see (or so I'm guessing).
I need to know if the 30" Cinema display would work with my new iMac, and if it would, as I'm guessing, give me a larger, easier-to-see screen.
I currently have my new iMac connected to my old mid-2010 iMac as a target display (that old iMac has a minidisplay port--no Thunderbolt), and that works great.  I just want a larger screen.
I called Apple support, and the tech rep wasn't sure it would work.  He seemed to think that the 30" Cinema displays were made with different connections.  Some had minidisplay ports (which he thought would work), and some a cord built into them that provided some other type of connection (that I guess would not work as far as he knew).
Can anyone tell me if this would work?  Would my new iMac and its video card support the 30" Cinema display?  Would the result be as sharp and good-looking as my iMac's built-in 27" display, but only bigger (which is what I'm hoping for)?  Any advice is appreciated.
I don't yet know many of the specifics of the 30" Cinema display I'm considering.  I know it is about 3 years old.  And here is a picture of the back of it:

Yes, you should be able use the 30" Cinema Display with your new iMac without problems. You'll need a mini-DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter
I haven't had the 30" myself to test so I don't know if there any caveats. Perhaps someone else here will have personal experience.
    Regards.

I'm trying to connect my 23" Cinema Display monitor to my iMac. The adaptor cable I ordered came with a female, I need a male adaptor. Any ideas where I might find one? I purchased the BlueRigger Mini Displayport Male to DVI Female Adapter Cable.

  • How to drive a 30" Cinema Display from a new 27" iMac?

How do I drive a 30" Cinema Display from a new 27" iMac that has no obvious video out port? There are lots of ports, but nothing resembling or identified as a video out port. Is the very small hole in the cabinet by the power in port the thing I'm looking for? If so, the power/video adapter for the Cinema will not work as is. Do I need a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter? I am completely uncertain about this, and could use solid advice. The AppleCare tech I spoke with today seemed not to have a clue. He said he would get back with me on this. He didn't.

    Overview
Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.
Use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to connect your Mac to a 30-inch display that includes a DVI connector, such as the 30-inch Apple Cinema Display HD, and enjoy the ultimate widescreen canvas with a resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels.
Compatible only with Mac computers with Mini DisplayPort and Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later.

    19. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 14), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.
