20' iMac 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo SuperDrive Malfunction

The computer is 4 days out of the box. The OS x v10.4.8 (and others) update was installed before starting with Boot Camp Beta v1.1.1 and Windows XP Pro. The SuperDrive malfunction occures after starting the computer from a CD/DVD and then restarting the computer back to the internal hard drive. Shutdown occures and the startup process stops with a blank screen and the SuperDrive making noises like it is trying to startup from the CD/DVD. At this time the computer is stuck and the only way that I have found to clear the issue is to power down. Then I power up and hold down the "F12" key. The SuperDrive ejects the disk and the start up completes normally.

Are you able to boot from a CD or DVD by restarting and holding the "C" key? Does "locked up" situation occur with any disk in the drive during a restart or a particular disk? Was it getting "confused" with a Windows disk inserted? Does the drive otherwise read disks without any issues? Can you listen to CDs? Can you watch DVDs? Can you install software from Install disks? If it will function properly in all these situations, it appears the drive is OK.
BTW, force quitting can damage the directory on your hard drive. You may want to boot from the Install DVD that came with your Mac and go to Disk Utility in the Utilities menu of the Installer. Select your HD and run Repair. Re-run Repair until it reports no repairs.

  • Imac 2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo - Sudden Wireless problems (after 1 year + of use)

    This is weird.
I have three macs on my wireless network. All work find and blazing fast until yesterday.
Now, my Imac 2.4 Core Dual internet speed is so slow or does not work at all.
The other two Macs (Macbooks) work fine.
    Any suggestions of cause?
    Additional info:
Nothing was changed on the Imac. Nothing was downloaded. One minute everything was fine and then next...nothing.
    I have tried restarting.
I have tried reseting the airport.
I have even let my Imac shut off for 24 hours.
After restarting, load time gets better for one or two pages and then poof! Back to slow/non existent loading...
    Any ideas helpful.

Try this - Open network preferences, make sure WiFi is selected, click the Advanced button, click TCP/IP, click Renew Lease.
While you are in the same screen, check your DNS settings and compare them to your machines that are running fine.

  • Freezing on iMac 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo

I am having increasing problems with freezes requiring forced shutdown and reboot on this computer. Have been using 10.6.4 since it came out. What I have done so far:
    1. Run Disk Warrior: only minor problems
    2. Repaired permissions; reinstalled 10.6.4 combo; repaired perm. again and rebooted
    3. Checked Console log for one of the last freezes: here is what I found:

What video card do you have in this machine? I have had similar problems with my iMac, and suspect it may be OpenGL-video card compatibility issue, but I am not an expert.
I rarely get a crash report after my machine freezes/crashes which leads me to believe that this problem may be underreported to Apple.
    Good luck

  • Why i can't run fcpx on iMac 3.06 Ghz core 2 duo with 16Gb ram?

I Can't run FCPX on my iMac.
It's working in theory, but it's stopping playback even without any effect, (video frames were dropped during playback - message), i can't preview any effect, as loading preview taking for ever.
I recently upgrade RAM from 4Gb to 16Gb 1067 Mhz DDr3, and I thought that's make a difference but not.
I have latest Lion 10.8.1 update. FCPX ver 10.0.5.
I try to work on 1080 video files located on main HDD , not external. they are from digital camera, 1920 x 1080, 1080p and codecs H264 linear PCM, 29.97 fps stereo.
    Any suggestion?

You have loads of power so something is not  OK.
Is your internal HD more than 80% full?
For a start trash your preferences using http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Incidentally if you are using 50p/60p footage, that could be the problem especially on an internal HD.
You should always transcode 50p/60p AVCHD to ProRes 422.
Do that and I am sure you will see an improvement.

  • Replacing e a broken OPTIARC  DVD RW AD-5630A drive in my iMac 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo? Is it worth it or should I just get an external one?

Any suggestions are most definitely welcome! Do you think it would be worth it or would I be better off going with an external? Thanks!

If your optical drive doesn't work, take your computer to an Apple Store and they'll change it for another optical drive. That's the safest way because you can't modify the iMac (except the keyboard, mouse and RAM)

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23477 1
Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

  • My Mac experience so far...17" iMac 1.83 GHz Core Duo

I bought this iMac the first of December as CompUSA was closing out the last of their older iMacs. It was a great deal at $900 with Apple Care included for 3 years. I upgraded the RAM and am running a second monitor. I also added a 250 GB Iomega USB drive.
All in all its been great so far with a few exceptions.
    1. My mouse gets stuck in right click mode. I have to unplug it and then its back to normal again.
    2. The keyboard space bar sticks about 1 out of every 10 strokes. This is annoying especially with a brand new keyboard.
    3. My CD's and DVD's won't eject. The drive tried to kick them out but due to some sort of resistance it never kicks the disk out. If I press the two layers of the display together...front and back it takes the pressure off and the disks pop out just fine. This seems more like a case that isn't sealed up tight.
    4. I have or had a dead pixel. It was green but when I rebooted it seems gone. Fingers crossed on this one.
I've been holding off on taking it in for repair. I hate the idea that I have to loose it for a week when its mstly brand new.
If anyone has any similar problems or can suggest any fixes for any of the above I'd appreciate it.
17" iMac 1.83 GHz Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   see above

Brett - A sticky mouse and keyboard as well as an optical drive that doesn't eject all adds up to more than an open box unit to me. I strongly suspect that you got a demo unit. Doesn't really matter, you did get a pretty good price, especially with a 3 year warranty.
You need to take the computer to a service center or call AppleCare. The keyboard and mouse can be handled via mail easily but I'd strongly suggest taking the computer itself to a service center to be looked at.

  • Is the Core i7 processor comparable, much slower, or faster than the 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo from 2009?

I am looking to get a new MacBook Air, but when looking at the prices I am seeing the MacBook Pro 13" for the same price and a lot more guts (RAM and Processor).  I am ok with spending the amount of money on the air if it means I get a computer that is like my iPad, which i love (flash based, snappy), but don't want it to be super slow.
I am coming off of a 17" 2.8Ghz MacBook Pro from 2009.  I was happy with the speed and power of that machine.  The most taxing thing I did was make a complilation of family movies in iMovie and burned them with iDVD once in the 2 years of ownership.
I mostly browse the internet and compose written documents, and keynote presentations.
I know my questions may seem stupid, but I don't know how significant the changes between i7 and Core 2 Duo are, so I ask the question:
I am wondering if the processing power in the core i7 will be somewhat comparable, much slower, or faster than the 2.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo I had in my 2009 computer?
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi brosephb,
Like you I went through a similar comparison process. I bought the MacBook air 13" and up specced the processor and memory. I don't do anything taxing enough or frequently enough to NEED the extra power of the MacBook pro.
I am overjoyed at my air. It's gorgeous, the way it wakes instantly, it's speed and it's portableness is so endearing that I just don't use my iPad anymore. I read numerous reviews on it and the overwhelming opinion was it's addictive ease of use because of it's slim, light and rapid waking. At work I can hold the air with one hand, open it rapidly at will. It's just great but it's made my iPad redundant (for me anyway).
I see the new airs are even faster and I'm tempted to consider selling my 6 month old air and getting the new one, but, it runs a dream so I am happy to just be envious of the new one.
In short, unless you need the power (for your work) go for the air. I'm looking at a new iMac to use as a home work station. For the price of a new air I can get an iMac that will swallow any task for a good few years to come. And my air will suffice as my mobile companion. However, that's just me spoiling myself as, at the moment, I have no teal need for another mac. I may get the cinema display for any long winded tasks, as the screen size will help with multiple tasking.

I have a 17" MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, with a 160 GB hard drive. I am looking to upgrade the hard drive. Will a WD Scorpio Black, 320 GB SATA, notebook hard drive fit into my MacBook Pro?

Hi MJMP1: You aren't really missing any Hard Drive space, check out this Apple article for more info.

    MacBook Pro, 15" Late 2008, 10.6.7 Model 2,2 2.16 ghz Core 2 Duo
This condition just sprang up.  Machine not dropped, no new parts added, OS stable, no single or significant change to anything on the box. No new external hardware.
Did a restart and the following thing happens:
When power is initially put to the box, the screen lights up, and it displays a full screen, small checkerboard pattern.  You can see the Apple icon underneath the checkerboard.  The boot circle spins, and then the screen displays grey, and never makes it to blue.
So I tried to boot up in safe mode.  The same thing happens at the start of the boot sequence, however, after entering the safe mode, the startup proceeds normally, boots to the harddrive, and when the box changes from grey screen to blue screen, the checkerboard on the screen goes away and I have a perfectly good display, with everything working normally (but in the safe mode).
    I have tried the following:
Boot from Apple CD . . . Still get the checkerboard pattern through grey screen, then as the OS loads, the pattern gets worse, (goes from a full screen pattern, to something like a "two page pattern" and it never gets to blue screen, you can never see the OS desktop.
    Won't boot from USB drive.
Won't boot from external Dvd drive (Reads the disk, but won't boot, just like the internal drive).
Already changed RAM, RAM slots, etc.  Nothing plugged into any port.  Everything disconnected.
Changed internal harddrives, same thing happens.  Zapped the PRAM, Firmware is good, etc.
Since this event happens no matter the harddrive, and the box won't startup from the Apple CD, I'm guessing it's a piece of hardware that has gone bad.
The only thing I can think to do, is to unplug all the different ancillary items, (ethernet, USB, airport, CD, etc), one at a time, off of the motherboard, and keep trying to start up normally in an effort to isolate the hardware that is bad.  In other words, if I unplug the airport card from the motherboard, and the machine starts normally, then I think I would have isolated the problem.  IF it does not start normally, unplug the next sub system, and try it again.
YEs, I did run Techtool Pro, and etc., and all systems passed.
    Any thoughts ?
    Thanks So much,
    erebus
Doesn't the safe mode disable all the hardware sub-systems?  IS this why my machine starts in Safe, but won't boot normally ???

Yes, I boot up from the OS 10.6.3 installation disc and use Disc Utility to repair Disk and Permissions. I must tell you though, I've done the disc repair and permission repair quite a few times and it has never helped. Right now I've forgotten the OS disc in Luxemburg so I can only get it when I'm back in 3 weeks.
I ran Disc Utility today though and repaired permissions. The only one that wasn't fixed was an SUID-file.
I also checked the disc and it has some problems but I can't fix them until I get my OS disc or if I ask them to do it at the Genius Bar.
Yes, I have a Time Machine backup on an external usb HDD, last time I backed up was yesterday.

  • HT201364 I'm currently running OS-10.6.8 on my IMAC with an Intel Core 2 duo and would like to update to at lease 10.7

I'm currently running OS-10.6.8 on my IMAC with an Intel Core 2 duo and would like to update to at lease 10.7. Can this be done and if so how?

Only if you cannot upgrade to Mavericks.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • IMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24-inch) - 2 or 4 slots ?

    Hi,
Crucial's memory selector tells me that I can install a maximum of 4GB of memory on my iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24-inch). Why does the system info show me that I have 4 slots with 2 being empty (see picture below) ?
    Regards.

    Hi,
I found the reason why System Info is displaying 4 slots ... it's because I have 4 slots.
I have a 21,5" monitor not a 24". It is identified as an iMac10,1 model and the good news is that I can upgrade to 16Gb of memory.
That being said, I would like to upgrade, because I often find that my computer is slow. If I go to the Activity Monitor utility, iI think that my memory requires an upgrade but how much more should I put in ? See the memory display below.
Also can someone tell me if I could experience a faster computer if my processor is not used intensively, like shown below.
    Regards.

  • How much Memory Should my IMac have?  iMac, 24-inch, Intel Core 2 Duo

Hi, I have a problem. I have a iMac, 24-inch, Intel Core 2 Duo which had to have a hard drive replaced. Brought it home today and it is not the same? It makes weird noises when processing info and it seems to run slower. I noticed that the memory is only 1GB and this model should have 2 or something along those lines? It seems as though they didn't replace this with what I had on my original one? Can anyone help me, let me know how to verify that I am lacking what I had on this machine when I bought it and what should this model have on it? I am so ****** off right now, it isn't funny!
Also, I can't go into my Iphoto and make any of my pictures a desktop image. That leads me to believe it is a low memory issue. Right?

What imac do you have how old is it. The 2.4ghz 20inch model still comes with 1gb as standard in the uk anyway. most intel imac including mine are totally silent, is it overheating download a great widget called istat pro at http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html this will show you your fan and temp etc. If it in warranty then take it back to apple or phone them with the machine serial number and they will inform you to what spec the imac was shipped to you. The desktop image problem - go-to system preferences then to desktop and screen saver you will find all your iphoto folder and events in the right hand side just click on your image this should work.

  • Greetings: I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - except Bluetooth. The Bluetooth icon isn't there. Any ideas?

    Greetings:
I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked for the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - everything except Bluetooth.
The Bluetooth icon does not exist in the System Preferenc screen.
I tried to download Bluetooth from Apple site but the message I got told me that I didn't need it.
Under Finder, Utilities, I found Bluetooth File Exchange but the message I got was that I had to connect a Bluetooth device to my computer.
I have to admit that I have no idea what's going on here.  I am hoping to avert the need to try another complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Puzzled is a polite word for it.
Thanks Barry - I found the file and trie to send it to trash.  The response: (This item cannot be trashed as it it owned by the system).
After dancing around with PRAM and SMC and turning on while holding the power-cntrl-option-shift and heavens knows what else, I now have the Bluetooth symbol on the top of the menu bar but it is ghoseted and has a squiggly line through it.   This, I didn't have before so I read this as some progress.  It notes that "Bluetooth is not available">
However, the Bluetooth icon is still missing from the System Preferences window - you know, between "network" and "sharing".
You note that you reckon the issue is not software based and you may be correct.  The reason that I wonder about that though, is that before I installed Snow Leopard, the keyboard and mouse both paired with the box under the Tiger 10.4.  That leads me to conclude that hardware is functional and that there is some screwy little bit of software that is not cooperating.
If I could delete Bluetooth from the system and re-install a fresh version, that might help.  Or, is there a way I can use the Snow Leopard install disc and only load in Bluetooth?
    I'm stumped.
    Thanks for your time
    /Bill C.
