20" iMac and APC backups

Hi,
I am adding to my MAC collection soon - looking seriously at the 2.1 20" iMac. I have used APC backups batteries for my other macs and discovered that my local Apple store does not have them. I went on line looking for what model I need for mac OS X, and I can not find it.
It has been a while. I got my current iMac in 2000, and use backups
APC Pro 500 for OS 9. It was specific for MAC.
I assume some of you are using backup type batteries still. Can you make suggestions?
Thanks
iMac DV SE graphite   Mac OS 9.1.x

There is no difference what CPU the UPS is serving. It is a function of how much power your system needs and how long you want to provide battery back up. I am thinking that the APC boxes at your local store have not had been changed to reflect the G5. The UPS software runs under OSX.
All I want is a few minutes of backup power so I can save open files and shut down the computer. The G5 iMac iSight draws 180 watts, the APC model BE500U is what I am using.

  • IMac and Online Backups

I have a problem with my iMac and my online backup service. In the middle of the a backup, my computer/internet connection seems to "sleep" after a set period of time, causing the backup to idle and not progress. The power setting for the hard disc is set to "never" sleep or turn off. Is there another setting (either on my iMac or Airport) that I am missing? Thanks for the help.

Contact the developers of the online service, it is they're app they should know how to trouble shoot the issue.

  • IMac 5,1 Backup and extension of hard drive strategy

I have an iMac 5,1 500 GB, 20-in running Time Machine on a Seagate 1TB FreeAgent. Both have worked great since I got them. I recently decided I needed a more robust backup strategy and also needed to consider extending my hard drive space. After researching this site, CNET, Amazon and others, I narrowed it down to four including LaCie Rugged 1T, WD My Passport Studio 1T, G-Drive 1T and OWC Mercury Elite. I decided on buying two external drives. One is the 1.0TB (1000GB) OWC Mercury Elite Pro High Performance 7200RPM FireWire 400+USB2 Solution, and the other is 2.0TB (2000GB) OWC Mercury Elite Pro 'Quad Interface' 5900RPM 64MB Cache Solution with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2.
My question is, what is the best way to make use of these three external drives to have redundant backup and to extend my hard drive, which is now 40G from its limit? What I want to accomplish is
    a TM backup
    a clone
    a second clone
    more usable hard drive space
My thought was to do the following:
Keep TM the way it is with the Seagate 1TB
Partition the OWC 1T such that I can clone onto it and also have some usable space to extend my hard drive
Partition the OWC 2T such that I can clone the iMac and clone the 1T partition that is hard drive extension, if that makes sense.
Am I making this too complicated? Is there a better way? Is it OK to partition an external hard drive for both clone use and extra usable space? Can I clone from the 1T to the 2T as I suggested?
Thanks for your suggestions. This is my first post that I hope doesn't get me thrown off the boards.

I implemented the backup plan I outlined above but have experienced an issue I can't resolve. For some reason, the OWC Elite AL Pro 1T will not boot with the FW400 connection even though it appears in the Startup options. I does not appear as an option when I hold the Option key on startup. If I connect via USB, it works fine and boots as expected.
So, I called OWC Support and they did not have a solution. I decided to return the OWC 1T and bought another 2.0TB (2000GB) OWC Mercury Elite Pro 'Quad Interface' 5900RPM 64MB Cache Solution with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2. The other one I bought cloned and booted just fine.
So now I am experiencing the same issues with the new 2T drive that I experienced with the 1T. Connecting via USB works fine, but connecting via FW400 will not boot. The drive is recognized in Finder and otherwise works as expected when connected via FW.
Anyone have any ideas as to solution?
    Thanks.

I recently had to purchase a new iPhone 4S.  I backed up my old 4s to my iMac and when I went to restore, I got this message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored".  I just purchased the iPhone 4S today so I know it's not the phone.  How can I get my information back?

If it's corrupt, generally it would be lost.
However, there is third-party software out there that can retrieve some of the data, those of which however I could not recommend as I have never done so myself.
Also, if the old 4S was running a more recent software version than the current 4S, that may cause the issue however usually iTunes tells you exactly that.
Good luck in retrieving that information.

i have a macbook with iTunes library, a new iMac, and a new time capsule. how can i transfer my itunes library from TC backup to the iMac?
(sharing the iTunes library between the macbook & iMack requires both machines and seems silly ...)

    No.

  • I need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. Please help

i need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. this is an attempt to consolidate all my data, new and old so I can uninstall Maverick and put Mountain Lion back on my iMac.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the files have been overwritten and you don't have a backup, they're gone.
If they have not been overwritten, then there are third-party apps (for example Techtool Pro 7 ) with data recovery functions that might be able to retrieve some or all of your files.
    Backing up is good.

  • HT1175 Using G-Raid to backup iMac and Mac Pro laptop

Has anyone atttempted to backup both machines to a Hitachi G-Raid with one partition? If they have, was it by direct USB 2.0 wire  using AirPort Express for the Mac Pro and direct fire wire to the iMAC?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

To backup in the future requires hooking up each machine individually and using TM.
To do it that way, yes, but that's not your best bet.
First, having both sets of backups made directly, in the same partition, may present problems later on. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #4 for details.
Second, the inconvenience of switching back and forth means both Macs won't get regular backups.  If you do switch frequently, there's the risk of damaging a port or plug.
Your best bet is to partition the drive.  Continue backing-up the iMac to one partition directly.  Leave the drive connected to the iMac, and back the laptop up to the other partition via your network.   See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #33 for details, and #22 for setup instructions.  That way, both will be backed-up hourly, as long as they're awake and the laptop is in range of your network.
Will my original question of using AirPort Express work
No.  You cannot connect a drive to an Airport Express's USB port, only a printer.

I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup.  Now that initial backup is concluded, can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?

can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?
Yes, if the computer will be able to receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
I did not disable wireless.  So I assume the backups are occurring both with the ethernet and wirelessly.
It is inot possible to have both an "active" Ethernet and "active" wireless signal simultaneously. If an Ethernet connection is established, your computer will default to the Ethernet connection. If the Ethernet cable is unplugged, the computer will revert to the wireless connection.
I also show 2 wireless networks available through Airport.  Shouldn't there only be one now?
You have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule. That means that it will always be providing both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network.
I named my new network the same name as the old network.  This enabled all of our devices to continue with their connection without entering the new network and/or passwords; however, I am afraid this may pose problems in the future somehow.  Any input on this issue as well?
Things should be fine. Devices will connect to the best signal.....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....based on their capabilties and location in relation to the Time Capsule.

  • TM doesn't see its backup after migrating to new iMac and restoring system.

TM doesn't see its backup even though it still exists on the HD. I just migrated to a new iMac. After using OS X disc to 'Restore System From Backup' with TM backup it was showing the latest backup attempt had failed. The same disk was highlighted under TM Preferences too. But once I reset it TM began to make a new backup under a new folder/computer name (adding a number to the end). Is there a way to make TM see the existing BU and continue on?

I'll try to recall to the best of my memory what I did... It's been stressful, frustrating, trying to deal with it.
    Computers:
    1) iMac6,1 (Late 2006) Intel 2.16 GHz Nvidia OS X 10.5.6
    2) iMac8,1 (Early 2008) Intel 2.8 GHz ATI OS X 10.5.4
Perform final backup of iMac #1 with TM and SuperDuper!
    Shut down and disconnect.
Hook up iMac #2 and power up.
After OS X intro select 'Transfer from another Mac' with Set Up Assistant (note: this was from the SD! backup).
Everything was selected for transfer; Users, Apps, Network,..etc. (I assumed it would update OS X too).
    Transfer complete.
    Restart.
    * I have both Admin and User account. I noticed things weren't performance was off; log in was slow (Menu Bar items took longer to display, clock too), and generally overall apps,..etc seemed slow. Apps were asking for license and reg info too.
Second attempt (restore system from TM backup):
Startup from OS X 10.5.6 disc.
    Erase HD with DU.
    Select 'Restore System from Backup'.
    Select TM backup.
    After that completed, restart computer.
And that brings us to now. Well, sort of.
So what is the proper way to migrate as it were from between two different Intel iMac's? I have to assume I transfered over system files that caused a conflict with the new iMac's HW, correct? What can I do now? I've already performed new backups of both SD! and TM. I didn't think it mattered since either way the backups come from my old system. I'm guessing I should have updated OS X first on the new iMac and only selected User files, Apps, Network settings,.. etc., for transfer, or maybe installed apps fresh. I thought I was doing it correctly.
    The new iMac still seems off with performance to me. I've tried performing multiple 'Repair Disk Permissions' too. There are about 32 differing permissions but DU doesn't seem able to repair them as they come up again and again. Here are some examples;
    2009-05-15 09:23:47 -0700: Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .

My final attempt to straighten this out is to install from OS X disc fresh (erase/install). Transfer only User files, Network settings, anything pertinent to my Users (email, browser, keychain,..),... and nothing else. Reinstall 3rd-Party Apps. I had to do this before after updating from Tiger to Leopard because it didn't take well.
    Any help/insight appreciated.

  • May MacBook and iMac do not backup to the Time capsule after a while

After setting up my MacBook Pro and my iMac to back up with time machine to the Time capsule everything worked, it backed up both hard drives. After a few days I first got the message on my iMac that my imac.sparsbundle is allready in use, and no backup can take place, after onother day the same message appeared on the MacBook Pro. I checked all the settings and once I even reformated the Time Capsule and started from new, with the same result after few days the same message apeard again and no backup takes place.
What must I doo to sort this out?

Launch AirPort Utility and make sure your hard drive is showing up in the disk settings then you can erase the disk then try to use it as a TM backup disk.

My hard drive crashed on my imac and was replaced. I have no iphone backup. How do I sync without erasing my iphone?

    You don't.
The iPhone is not a backup device. You can use File>Transfer purchases in iTunes to extract media and apps purchased from the iTunes store. If you have music on your phone that came from other sources, you will need to retrieve the originals or purchase 3rd party software to extract it from the phone.

  • Hard drive died on iMac and getting replacement.  I have all photos backed up on my iPad 3, which was synced directly to the dead iMac's iTunes.  How can I move them back to my laptop and eventually to the repaired iMac?

I'd like to restore photos from my iPad3 to the iMac once I have a new drive. I had uploaded them directly from the iMac onto the IPad via iTunes.   That iTunes was wiped out in the drive failure.  In the meantime I wanted to move the photos to my MacBook Pro, but iTunes tells me they belong to another iTunes (mine also but was on the iMac) and syncing will erase the content on the iPad.  Moved all photos (4000+) to an album in iPhoto on the iPad, but iPhoto on the MacBook doesn't see the album-  It only see photos directly taken on the iPad. I seem to be caught in an owenership issue between my photos, my computers, and permissions due to the dirve failure.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Photos synced to an iDevice are different from ones taken by the device's camera.
Difference between camera roll, photo stream, and photo library - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3846502
You will need to use a third party utility to try to recover them as it is assumed that if you transferred them from your computer  you alredy have the original files on the computer and a backup of the computer itself (do not rely upon your iPad as a backup).  Furthermore, the photos transferred to your iPad have reduced quality so they are not as good as the originals.
Here's my old list of utilities (this list was really done for music rescue so make sure they do photos too):
Note: The information below hasn't been updated since early 2013.
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
