20" IMac G4, dead logicboard.  Can I convert it to a monitor only?

Hi. My 20" imac G4 logic board crapped out at 2 1/2 years (problem in graphics area). No Applecare. No, I'm not gonna dump $900 into it.
Can I have someone remove the logicboard and somehow hook up an adapter to the monitor so I can use the now gutless iMac as a 20" monitor for the mini I just bought?
I figure that if the logic board can be removed/replaced that there must be a connection for the monitor. Hook up a displayport to it and will it work?

It may be possible, but it will not be easy. At startup, the iMac does a hardware self-test before the display is powered up. If the logic board is bad or removed, the iMac will never get to the point where it is fully powered up, including the display.
Also, the internal video connection will not be any standard type of display connector.
So the two challenges will be to bypass the logic board to power the LCD and CCFL backlighting directly, and to figure out how to adapt the internal video connection (probably some type of ribbon cable) to some type of external connection (VGA would be the best bet).
The 20" iMac G4 is a nice machine; +collectors item+ category, if in good shape. Have you done enough testing to know for sure that the problem is the logic board?

  • IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive?

IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive - which is still working? I took it to the Apple store and they quoted $500+to replace the monitor. No help as usual. Can I buy a MAC compatible monitor ($189) and use it as a primary monitor? Can I set it up if the screen on the IMAC is dead? Any other solutions?

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • The cable between the logic board and the 3G board  was removed can I convert it to a Wifi only?

I have a Ipad 2 3g. someone detached the cable between the logic board and the 3G board can I convert it to a Wifi only?

The ipads that have 3g have an extra section attached to the logic board by a glued on wire. I bought this at a tag sale. Someone was apparently trying to repair their iPad and they did not know that when you removed that glued strip attaching the 3g antenna to the logic board you would never be able to re-atach it again later. So basicaly my 3g logic board is now in two pieces. the main logic board with wifi and the cdma 3g antenna. Now their is no differnce between the logic boards in either wifi only or wifi and 3g devices. I attempted to restore the device with the ios for wifi only, because there are 3 different ios versions depending on if you have wifi only wifi 3g with SIM card, or wifi 3g cdma.

  • Intel iMac with failed LogicBoard - can I use it as display for my MacMini?

I have a Intel iMac with failed logic board (the display comes up while booting sometimes and sometimes, it doesn't). I bought a Mac Mini afterwards. I connected it to a Dell monitor with HDMI and the results aren't great. I experience interminttent video losses (Grains on screen every 1 minute or so).
So, I am now thinking about using my failed intel Imac as a display. Will it work?

No, the failed imac is dead until you replace the logic board.

  • Can't Convert WP8 to Universal (VS Only Changes to Silverlight 8.1)

    Hi!
This is my first post here, and appreciate your help.
I have a Windows Phone 8 solution with 1 project.
Now with Update 2 I'm trying to make a conversion to universal app solution. I know there will be manual changes to do, but:
I've read about a right click and selec "add windows 8.1" but I don't have this option here.
The only option is "retarget to windows phone 8.1" but if I do this, it changes to "windows phone silverlight 8.1" and then, no more option to add anything.
Why it changes to "silverlight 8.1" and not "windows phone 8.1" (which could be the base to add a "windows 8.1" project)? Am I missing something?

Universal apps are WinRT based.  Your original Phone application is not so it cannot be converted.  Windows Store 8.0 apps are WinRT based, so they can be converted and you can add a Windows Phone RT project to the universal app.

  • Imac and canopus advc110 can you out put to a monitor

I am new to this apple stuff and have after some pro advice settled for a canopus advc110 to go with my imac, i am now struggling with the settings to output to a monitor please help!!!!!

    Hi
This works greatly with my Canopus ADVC 300.
I connect box to Mac via FireWire
My Box has one in and one out analog side. Connect Out with RCA-connectors to
    Monitor RGB (RCA-In) or via a SCART-plug.
In FinalCut when starting up it should identify the "Camera/A/D-box" (External A/V) and not ask for it
When FCE/P is up and running. Select View Menu from top Row.
Down this select "External Video" -> All frames
If this doesn't work Select next line "Refresh A/V Devices" then "External Video" -> All frames
    This works for me.
Read Manual of Your Canopus ADVC-110 if ther is any Dip-Switch settings needed
    (Not same on ADVC-300 Sorry)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Can I use AppleTV with a monitor only?

I no longer have cable TV access (not enough value for its cost).
Can I use AppleTV with just a wide screen monitor?

Personally I'd go for a TV rather than a monitor as the monitor resolutions will not necessarily tie in with the expected AppleTv output resolutions 480p/576p/720p/1080i or 1080p. An HD ready TV with a lower than fullHD panel is still likely to work better than a monitor not suite designed for 16:9 signals, though the boundaries are becoming blurred.
Take a look at the AppleTV specs as content playback is more limited for video than you might realise without files in the appropriate format, and a MacMini might be worth considering with Front Row.

  • Dear Community, how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ? Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ? Cheers, Marek

    Dear Community,
how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ?
Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ?
    Cheers, Marek

    Thanks Jan.
Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....
    Best regards,
    Marek

  • How can I convert MiniDV tapes to DVD? I've use a Canon GL 2 and an iMac about 1 year old. I'm trying to use iMovie and I've installed the latest drivers.

How can I convert MiniDV tapes to DVD? I've use a Canon GL 2 and an iMac about 1 year old. I'm trying to use iMovie and I've installed the latest drivers.

MiniDV was a great format, one I still use often. I also still use iMovie HD6 to process it and, for all the iterations of iMovie that followed it, I still believe it was one of Apple's greatest movie software programmes, next to Final Cut Pro, using a timeline method of editing. That was also in the day which Apple put Superdrives into their computers, so that you could not only make your movie in iMovie, but you could render it to iDVD and then burn the DVD. Now you need to buy an external burner.
Since iMovie HD6 and iDVD 6 were "universal" software, it has continued to work through the many OS releases since it came out with Tiger, I believe it was. So, it may still work with Mavericks too and, if you could locate a copy of iLife 06, probably used, you might enjoy the difference that HD6 has over all iMovie releases since then.
Not saying you can't process your MiniDV with current iMovie versions, but I'm not the one to speak about that.

  • I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

It's almost impossible.  The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that.  Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15.  In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum.  I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere.

    Hi!
How can I convert an .m1v file for my MacBook to be able to play it?
I tried numerous apps from the app store, but they failed
    Thanks!

    Hello:
Rather than try to buy a box, I suggest you take the computer to a FedEx or UPS store.  They will wrap and safely package the device for a reasonable cost (I have shipped two iMacs this way).

  • Can i convert AIFF audio file into an MP3 file please?

Can i convert AIFF audio file into an MP3 file please? I will be doing this on an imac 2008 model. thank you for help!

Since this is the Logic forum and you may be working in Logic, you dont even need iTunes. To convert Aiff to MP3:
    1 - Go to the Bin>Audio Files
2 - Select the Audio File you want to convert ( and not a region or edit of it)
3 - Go to Audio File next to the Link icon ( Audio - Edit - View ) and down the menu to Copy/Convert.. gives lots of options
