20" iMac Size

Hi folks,
This should be an easy question for someone with a new 20" iMac and a tape measure. I'm looking to replace my old G5 that currently sits on my kitchen desk underneath the wall cabinets. The cabinets are 18.25 inches off of the desktop. Will a new 20" iMac fit? I know the specs on the web state the height of this model is 18.5" - is this an exact dimension? I live over a 100 miles from the nearest Apple store or I would go measue it myself. Thanks for the help!

I have a 20" iMac. 19" from bottom of base to top of the computer. I measured this with the monitor exactly 90 degrees to my desk, not at an angle.

  • Two monitors, one iMac, mirroring problem

Here is the background: I want to stay healthy. All this sitting is killing me (and us).
So I attached a 23 inch Apple Cinema HD Display to my 16 GB memory (max) 27 inch iMac Intel Core i5 using a little adaptor. I have one screen up on a tall desk (so I can stand) and one on a lower desk (so I can sit) - this makes no difference to the problem here but, I want to give you a reason why I am asking a question. I use a wired Apple keyboard with the iMac and wireless with the Cinema HD. It all works great. Except for one problem.
I need to mirror the two (not mirroring would not make sense or work as it is essentially just two monitors in different user spots plus 2-3 feet apart on different levels + the menus and windows only stay on one screen for non mirroring - a pain). I only need one screen at a time.
When I mirror, the Cinema HD looks fine but the iMac shrinks down in size. When I choose the 2560 x 1440 iMac size, the iMac just goes back to the smaller 1920 x 1200 and says “Usable resolution 1920 x 1200”.
What is going on and, is there a fix I can employ to regain the lost screen real estate on the iMac screen? The 1920 x 1200 does not look as good on the iMac and the dock icons shrink to be unusable too.

You have a few options which are detailed here:

  • IMac Stand, does it come out?

Hi there and a very Merry Xmas to you all!
My question is related to the fact that i am uncertain if i will buy an iMac or a Macbook Pro,for my wife, i really like the iMac but the thing is i want something "semi-portable", with the fact that the iMac size is relatively small i was pondering carrying it from my house in Uk to my parents house in Portugal... But as always i don't want to break anything so i wanted to know, for portability sake, does the stand/support of the iMac comes out, or is there any Backpack specific for this model that will enable me to carry it to wherever i want to?
Thank you very much for your help,
    Renato

On the 24" models you can remove the stand and use a VESA mount. I don't think it's an easy job though.
As for moving the iMac take a look at the iLugger (link).
    Merry Christmas

  • Time Machine backup error message

I am making a second backup with a new HD. It made the first Time Machine backup, but ever since, I get the error message "unable to complete backup".
The Time Machine buddy gives me this message:

  • Time Machine Errors

    Hi Guys,
I don't have a great deal of experience with Time Machine or in fact Apple products in general. However one of my clients who's Window machines i support has an issue with their Mac at home, so trying to help them out.
The issue is Time Machine just won't back up. Below is a copy of the error log which shows a couple of backups. The errors seam to vary each time the backup is run, and none of the common troubleshooting steps I've found appear to fix things.
When the backup kicks off it seams to run for varing amounts of time - anywhere from a couple of minutes through to about 20 minutes before it fails with the ever so helpful "an error occured" message.
From the research i've done it appears that this "error -50" indicates an issue with a set file/directory. However even when i exclude these directories, it still keeps finding more. I'm concerned there's a bigger issue than just a few corrupt files - it almost looks like i'll have to exclude half the bloody disk before it will work.
There's also other error messages, such as this "error-36", "error-8062" and a few others as you can see. As mentioned before i've tried a few of the common solutions i've found from searching online, including excluding the error files, removing the time machine config file and there was something about removing and repairing the time machine program itself from memory.
Any suggestions as to what else i can try would be muchly appreciated.

In the research you have done, have you come across the Time Machine Guru, Pondini, link below.   A lot of reading but a thorough resume of the system.
    Edit.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html

  • HT3275 Time Machine error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume. Tried restarting, remounting external WD drive. Still cannot backup.

Time Machine quit backing up files. Bought a new WD external drive. Worked for awhile, then quit backing up. Tried restarting computer, remounting drive. Message: Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred when copying files. Suggestions?

Thanks so very much for your help!! I'm boggled by it and now just about ready to dump the whole idea of Time Machine and backup using a cloning program. Maybe TM is only guaranteed to work well with Time Capsule these days?
Today there again was no backup. I did as you suggested, looked into Console. It showed many lines of "(Error) DiskStore: No block in wakeup" and also repeatedly "(Warning) DiskStore: Ignored bogus fetch...".
So I created a marker and attempted to initiate a backup, keeping Console open and refreshed. Here's what I got:

I'm thinking it's the standalone Buffalo backup drive not waking up, and so everything comes to a screeching halt. Do you also think I should abandon TM and just do manual backups every day using a clone program?

  • In Time Machine "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while completing the backup folder

Time machine fails to complete backup

I've been getting the Unable to Complete Backup error message for several days.  Last good back up was 11-22-13 at 11:13PM.  I am running an iMac with OS-X 10.7.5.
I did the above steps in Console and got a huge string of lines; I tried to edit all repeitious ones that were the same, but still ended up with a lot of lines that seemed to develop more different processes over a few days.  Sorry to put all this stuff in here, but I don't honestly know what to make of all of this code language.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Monitor Spanning with macparts.de, anyone tried this?

    Gang,
I am looking for a new desktop and I was thinking of a iMac G5 2.0GHz. But I really need 2 monitors and so I saw that this guy has this firmware update that allows multiple monitors on iBooks, iMacs and others.
I can see what he is doing but there is very little information on what can be done, resolution etc... I have a 19" Priceton LCD on my PowerBook I would like to use with the iMac.
    Anyone used this? upsides? downsides?
    THanks
    Gordon

Hi Gordon. I'm encouraged by your post. You clearly know more about this stuff than I do, but I'll try to lay out a couple facts as I know them.
The 'video out' port on the iMac is physically the same as on the 12" Powerbook. Ie. both Mini-DVI to VGA and Mini-DVI to DVI dongles that come with the PB (and neither of which come with the iMac - $20 each) will physically fit into the back of the iMac.
Apple offers the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter as an option for the iMac - same part number and everything.
The video card with Rev. B iMacs is the same card as low-end PowerMacs. Obviously it has software crippling to better-distinguish the two lines. Spanning Doctor should realize it's full potential - which as you say SHOULD be able to push out a DVI image as well as VGA.
My LCD is the same res. as yours (which is a stupid Microsoft-invented resolution that's not even close to 4:3). Some months back (when I was first researching my switch to Mac and before I bought my PB) I saw a page showing a Rev. A iMac spanning to a 17" LCD but they used a VGA-DVI converter because - according to that guy - the iMac could only output to VGA while his LCD was DVI only, so he had to convert. His claim that it's only VGA-out seems to stem from the Apple specs - but then those specs also say it can't span.
What are the conflicts that you've read about? Any specific posts I should read? I keep hoping some experienced Mac geek will come on and tell us that the software's great and it spans beautifully to DVI.
I'm confident that the video card on the Rev. B iMacs will easily push both monitors. My PB with half the VRAM (and a mid-grade 64mb card at that - the nVidia as opposed to the beefier Radeon that the 15" PB comes with that's also 64mb) is sufficient: expose and dashboard and other VRAM intensive tasks are fluid and lovely.
As for PowerMacs, I'd love one, but it is a lot more money. I spend most of my times overseas, so I need a Mac that can be carted around in a suitcase, so the iMacs size/feature ratio is a big bonus for me.
Hate to sound like a parroting prognosticator, but if you're even somewhat in the market for a PowerMac don't buy till after Sept. 20th (Paris Expo) when many believe they'll launch dual-dual PowerMacs.
Any thoughts about the matched-pair debate? I don't think I'd be satisifed with 1gb, 1.5gb is unmattched, and I wonder if 2gb is over-kill. I'm entirely unsure about the whole thing.
Anyway, I'm sad that since I'm selling my PB (with both dongles) I'll have to re-buy both VGA and DVI dongles for the iMac since I plan to also drag the iMac around as the ultimate Keynote Companion (I'm already dreaming of scanning my 'notes' pane on the much-bigger screen than 12" PB). Might look for a cheaper DVI-VGA adapter and just buy the one over-priced Apple adapter.
Keep me posted on what you're thinking!
    Thanks,
    Alex

Usually that error indicates a drive malfunction; specifically, the drive is spinning down and not responding to bus signals. Some "Eco" or "green" drives are known for this behavior. The following steps may help:
Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive is connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port on the computer.
If a firmware update is available for the drive, apply it.
Contact the drive manufacturer to see whether there's a firmware setting you can change.
If you installed vendor software for the drive, uninstall it.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, try another drive.

  • How do I get TimeMachine to avoid failing?

I have tried now with two different external hard drives to get Time Machine to work. I usually can get it to create one back-up and then possibly a handful of follow up back ups and then I start getting messages that Time Machine failed to perform a back up. What should I do to trouble shoot this problem?

Thank you for responding. Here is the most recent log:

  • Time Machine Backups gone since Yosemite install?

And on a second, possibly related, issue (as discussed in this thread: TimeMachine backups are not accessible after the clean install of Yosemite):
Just had a weird glitch with Dropbox recently whereby files and folders disappeared but I thought "It's ok. Everything is Time Machined. I'm fine!" only to discover that my backups on the Time Machine only extend to the last week... which is shocking, to say the least.
I know for a fact that a few days ago I saw that my 750GB external TM drive was down to about 8GB free and now there is suddenly 82GB free, plus a never before seen folder called "lost+found" next to the Backups.backupdb folder. What is it and where did it come from?
Just noticed now that my 750 GB drive holds 13.68 TB of data (that is seriously impressive), and that the lost+found folder is 22.66 GB big.
Fortunately, Dropbox has the "Restore Files and Folders" feature so hopefully nothing is lost but this Time Machine glitch is a horrible eye opener - all of a sudden I cannot rely on my backups extending back at least a few months, like I have entrusted it to do for years.
Since upgrading to Yosemite I have had a whole bunch of... seemingly trivial... glitches and bugs (dropbox syncing errors, re-establishing Apache and a local test-server issues plus a few other minor irritants plus the unexpected random reboot of the computer twice in the last 2 weeks) that have now all added up to leave me anxious about what new problem is going to manifest.
For example, in trying to view any Time Machine logs that might give a clue as to when or why the backups have disappeared I opened Console only to find that the console window doesn't appear. Anywhere. Even new ones.
I'm not a geek and have no idea how Console might help me but i was simply following the instructions in this link http://www.macworld.com/article/1131534/tmeye.html but Yosemite is not doing what I think it should.
This is what that app LogViewer Time Machine displays (seriously, my Console doesn't show a window - how do I fix that?) about the earliest backup, which is from Tuesday, Nov 18, 2014.
8:28:28 am - Starting automatic backup

This one from this morning throws up a weird error - seems like my iMac has developed a number 2 after it's name (I will avoid the obvious joke that if these glitches keep occuring under Yosemite then it's very apt):

Any help or assistance or guidance would be deeply appreciated. Haven't had any major issues with this machine since I got it, till the Yosemite update.

Just back from an Xmas break in the wilderness and took a look at my Mac. Firstthing I see is that Time Machine has not backed up since 24th Dec. LogViewer for TimeMachine reports the following:
12:15:13 am - Starting automatic backup
12:15:14 am - Error determining directory contents for /Volumes/BackUp Brain: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The file “BackUp Brain” couldn’t be opened." UserInfo=0x7fa539607ad0 {NSFilePath=/Volumes/BackUp Brain, NSUserStringVariant=(
        Folder
    ), NSUnderlyingError=0x7fa539607e30 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -36.)"}
    12:15:14 am - Backing up to /dev/disk3s2: /Volumes/BackUp Brain/Backups.backupdb
    12:15:15 am - Error -36 applying backup protections to /Volumes/BackUp Brain/Backups.backupdb/Diarmaid‚Äôs  27" iMac
    12:15:15 am - Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/BackUp Brain/Backups.backupdb/Diarmaid‚Äôs  27" iMac size:37
    12:15:15 am - Backup failed with error 2: 2
With variations of the same till today. My 750GB WD Elements external is still there visible on the desktop, displaying 66GB free with the "lost+found" folder and the Backups.backup folder, only this time neither is displaying any contents.
Seriously, does anyone have any idea what is going on with Time Machine? If I cannot rely on it for automatic backups I don't know what I am going to do. It has ALWAYS been there, working perfectly in the background and saving my *** numerous times.

  • Calculating Changes... Besides the great Pondini guide...

    Greetings,
I have a recent iMac with Snow Leopard. I have two external Firewire 400 G-Tech external Harddrives connected to the iMac. One is daisy chained into the other. Every now and then I get the message "calculating changes" which never goes away until I reboot the mac. It then usually works as normal for a week or so.
I have read this Pondini guide from start to finish and done most of the upkeep but this message keeps returning. I went so far as to reformat the drive a while back to start fresh but the error message makes its way back.
I don't think anything is wrong with any of these hard drives so I am looking for other areas of error. If I was to guess I think it has something to do with mount points or even the drive goes into sleep even when it is not supposed to. Can you update firmware on these G-Tech harddrives? Should I change to the USB 2.0 and see if that changes anything?
I'm going to post a couple of TM Buddy messages so let me know what you see...
    Today at noon:

    Cheers

The TM drive (Nothing else on there) is around 24 months. It has a FW400 and USB2.0 interface on the back. Try connecting it via USB for a while. If that stops the problem, you'll at least have narrowed it down.
    Will Try tomorrow...
I don't think I have a situation with OSX, but my mac does freeze once a month or so requiring a forced reboot. This is usually however due to some sort of issue with TM, Handbrake, iTunes or similar.
That may be related. I don't see that you've posted about that earlier, so some details might help. If you're talking about TM being stuck in Calculating Changes, what messages do you see on the TM Preferences panel when that happens. You should see "Calculating Changes" only briefly, then "Scanning xxxx items" for a while, then "Preparing xxx items." Where does it hang?
It never changes from Calculating changes... I usually notice it because an icon has popped up on the screen "calculating changes". I usually never see the update. This is why I reboot otherwise it would never backup again.
Have you Verified your internal HD, and repaired your TM drive and other external, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in User Tips at the top of this forum)?
Repaired, Verified, permissions, all according to your guide. Everything checks out OK...
Should I try to reinstall OSX or just do the latest Combo update? Any input would help...We don't know enough about your other problems, but this one seems more like hardware. But if you want to go that route, I'd start with the Combo. If that doesn't help, reinstall OSX "in place" (without erasing your HD), then the Combo again.
Erasing and reinstalling everything is a last resort.

  • Time machine is not able to finish the backup

I guys i have this problem with time machine: before maverick everything was ok; after mavericks installation I find this problem: i have an external 1TB disk, my backp is 650 GB ( as Tm said)  , TM starts with back then when it is near to the whole backup dimension, the value of backup becomes to increase, and then Tm , after hours, says that there is no more space in the disk
Did someone find the same problem?
    What can i do?
    Do you have some suggestiones?
    Thanks in advance
    I have an imac latestversion.

    OK.
Not a Problem with any smart errors...its on the MAC.
    Something like this:
    Starting manual backup
    Backing up to /dev/disk4s2: /Volumes/TIME MACHINE/Backups.backupdb
    Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/TIME MACHINE/Backups.backupdb/CTN iMac size:37
Backup failed with error 2: 2
    Try the following:
    1. Switch off Time Machine
    2. Empty the HDD. Format Journaled with a different Name.
    3. Choose this new formatted HDD as your new TM Backup Part.
    4. Look what happens...
    Hope that helps.
    Nick
