I have an old (first generation) iMac that I still use sometimes for the applications that are on it. I was using it yesterday and unfortunately had a power cut. I went to turn it on today, and nothing at all happens. It's as though no power is getting to it. I've checked the obvious things, changed the fuse, tried different cables, poked paperclips in reset holes, but nothing doing. I wonder if there is anyone who knows what might be wrong. I was hoping to get some of its content transferred soon, but I'm guessing that can't be done if it can't be started up. Many thanks, if you can help

    Hello,
    >It's as though no power is getting to it.
Would it be correct to assume that no sounds at all can be heard? Also, no lights, not even green or amber at the power button?
    >unfortunately had a power cut.
Was it possibly a power cut in connection with a thunderstorm? Any other evidence of higher than normal voltages (light bulbs, et cetera)? Has the line voltage been checked (measured with an appropriate voltmeter/multimeter)?
If necessary, it would be possible to remove the hard drive, and then connect it to an external IDE/ATA to USB adapter (example below). That way you could gain access to files on the hard disk from another computer.

  • IMac G4 RAM upgrade?

How much can a G4 be upgraded to, is it 1GB only?

    Hi Hamper,
Just to further add to Steve's reply, there were seven different releases of the G4 iMac:
    1. iMac (Flat Panel) aka Tessera, P80 - Introduced Jan 2002, Discontinued Feb 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    2. iMac (17-inch Flat Panel) aka P79 - Introduced July 2002, Discontinued Feb 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    3. iMac (15-inch Early 2003) - Introduced Feb 2003, Discontinued Sep 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    4. iMac (17-inch Flat Panel, 1GHz) - Introduced Feb 2003, Discontinued Sep 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    5. iMac (15-inch USB 2.0) aka Horizon, Q268 - Introduced Sep 2003, Discontinued July 2004 - Max RAM = 2GB
    6. iMac (17-inch USB 2.0) aka Horizon, Q26C - Introduced Sep 2003, Discontinued July 2004 - Max RAM = 2GB
    7. iMac (20-inch USB 2.0) - Introduced Nov 2003, Discontinued July 2004 - Max RAM = 2GB
All models had one factory installed module (earlier models had 512MB factory installed, later models had a 1GB module factory installed) and one user accessible module.
What you must understand is that Apple, and indeed any computer manufacturer, can only specify maximum RAM specifications with the memory modules that were publicly available at the time of release (or when the specs were written). Since they were released, larger memory modules have become more widely available (not to mention cheaper). You most certainly can install a 1GB or 2GB module in your iMac and it will be recognised.
If you have further questions there is a Flat Panel iMac Category with frequent contributors who will be able to help you. You can access it here:

  • IMac 5k ram upgrade.

    Dear all,
Hopefully this isn't a huge repeat topic.
I am looking to get the new iMac 5K. I have held off for around a year now as I thought they'd bring a high res iMac.
For me though, 8GB of RAM isnt enough. I am not willing to give apple £160 for an extra 8GB. So I would upgrade myself but here is my question/s.
Can I simply install 1 x 8GB card, is it that simple? Does the stock 8GB of RAM come as 2 x 4GB? Does this mean I need to buy 2 x 4GB RAM Cards?
Also, is the access to the Ram cards still in the back or is it now more complicated? I don't want to risk damaging anything, especially the display by opening the iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated.

According to the published specs here:
    https://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/specs/
    Apple wrote:
    8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory; four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible
    Configurable to 16GB or 32GB.
That means yes, the stock 8GB comes 2 x 4GB modules, and you can add a 8GB ram module to one of the remaining slots.   Make sure it matches the speed of the currently installed modules for best performance.
You can buy a single 8GB module or 2x4GB modules. Its up to you.
The access panel is on the back.

  • Imac 32GB ram upgrade

My imac is a 27" mid 2011 model, 3.1Ghz intel core i5 with 4GB stock ram. I use programs like Adobe Premier Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, illustrator, Lightroom4 (pretty much everything on the Adobe Master Suite Collection CS6), Ableton Live, Protools etc. I understand that it IS possible to MAX out at 32GB of RAM.
My question is... Has anyone on here upgraded to 32GB of RAM on the imac? Any problems or glitches? i really want to upgrade but not sure if i should do 16GB or 32GB? Can you see any difference between 16GB and 32GB?
    Thanks in advance,
    Moe

Hi Moe, it can indeed hold 32GB...
    Standard RAM:
    4 GB
    Maximum RAM:
    32 GB*
    Details:
By default, 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB SO-DIMM modules. Two slots free. *Officially, this model supports four 4 GB modules -- one in each slot for a maximum of 16 GB of memory. However, third-parties have discovered that it actually will support 32 GB of memory using four 8 GB modules. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor Other World Computing sells memory -- as well as other upgrades -- for this iMac. In Canada, site sponsor The Mac Market sells memory and other upgrades for this iMac. In Australia, site sponsor RamCity sells memory and other upgrades for this iMac.  Also see: Actual Max RAM of All G3 & Later Macs.

  • Why is aperture crashing on my iMAC after Ram upgrade?

I have recently upgraded the Ram on my Apple iMac and everything seems to be working fine except Aperture, which keeps crashing. Should I reinstall it? If so how? It is showing as installed on my purchases and the box is greyed out.

Should I reinstall it? If so how?
Before reinstalling, check, if it is a system wide issue and try to narrow down the problem.
Is Aperture still crashing, if you are creating a new Aperture library and import a few test images?
Is Aperture still crashing, if you are launching it with the Shift key held down?
Is Aperture still crashing, when working from a different user account?
If  Aperture is working fine in any of these situations, the problem is with your Aperture library or settings /installations in your user account, and reinstalling Aperure should not be necessary.
Then post back please with your test results, and also your Aperture version number and how you bought Aperture, from the Mac App Store or a boxed Retail version?

  • IMac '07 Ram Upgrade

Anyone know if this ram will work for the iMac Mid/Late 2007?
    Kingston 2GB 667MHz Laptop Memory (KTH-ZD8000B/2G)

Just done the upgrade last night using Kingston P2 5300 per apple support site. As my Imac 7.1 20" Aug 2007 similar to yours. Yesterday price for 2x2G @ S$55 each @ SimLim Sq.
Did the Hitachi 1T HDD upgrade at the same time too (learn from Internet). Bought a Torx8 S$3 + HDD at S$72. I am very happy as it work. was down to 2G HDD space & now have 600+G to use.

  • New iMac: 4GB RAM upgrade does not boot

I have a new 24" 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme iMac. Bought the Crucial 4GB kit. Installed both sticks, but the iMac would not boot. I heard the hard drive spinning, but it would not boot. I removed a stick from the first slot ("first" from left to right looking at the screen), and inserted the 1GB oem stick. It booted fine. I thought I had a DOA 2GB stick, so I returned it to Crucial. Got my new replacement memory and tried again. Still would not boot. Switched slots. Same problem. Replaced the OEM 1GB in the first slot again, it it booted fine. I tried every configuration, and the only thing that works is the 1GB OEM in the first slot and one 2GB Crucial stick in the second slot. I cannot get 4GB of RAM to work. Any suggestions?

With the orginal 1GB and a 2GB module installed are you seeing all 3GB in "Apple / About This Mac" and Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor?
Resetting the PRAM can solve certain startup problems.
Try installing the 2x2GB kit and restart the Mac immediately press Command-option-P-R and hold the keys down until the Mac chimes a second time. This resets the information in the Mac’s parameter RAM (PRAM) to its default values. The PRAM is a special area of RAM where data is retained even after you shut down the Mac.

  • IMac 266 RAM upgrade

What type of RAM do I need and where can I find it?

    Welcome to the discussions!
You need a 144-pin 100MHz SODIMM and can have two, 256MB chips for a total of 512MB RAM. I know Apple says a max of 256MB, but that was based on the chips available at the time. You can safely put 512MB in if you want to.
Since you are in Chicago, give OWC in Woodstock a call. They have the chips you need for $43.99 and they will get them to you next day without paying extra for the shipping because you are so close. I live in Rockford and always get my stuff next day while paying for standard shipping.

  • IMac 233 RAM upgrade-wisdom & advice needed

    Hi-
I have an iMac 233 now running on OS9.2.2., it is a bondi, tray-load-CD-drive, Video memory is 6MB according to system profile. (I think it may be a Rev A but I'm still a little shaky on determining that one). I've been it's only owner since it was new (circa 1997-1998 who really remembers that far back??).
I have 32MB in the bottom memory slot, and 128MB in the top spot (I added it just after I got the computer). So it has 160 MB memory now.
I'm running into memory issues and I want to max out the memory that it can hold.
Some websites say it will take 512 MB. How so? Two 256MB chips? Other sources say I'm limited to 160 MB.
Some memory websites say you'll only know if the larger memory chip works if you try it, because of where your board was made.
Should I try putting a 256MB memory chip in the bottom slot? I understand it is under the top one, and I've been inside the guts before so I'm not intimidated by doing this myself.
Has anyone out there had any success doing something like this?
And are the top and bottom chips different sizes so that one may not fit into the other?
Also, is there anything I will need to reset or worry about when I change the internal 1/2 AA battery? My clock is losing a few minutes every week. I've got the new battery but want to know what to expect popping the old one out.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks!

I ran 512MB in my Bondi Blue for years. The lower slot is low profile (1.5" I believe), so you have to get a low profile DIMM for that slot. You can get a 512MB kit for it from www.datamem.com, which is 2X256MB DIMMs. Either one will be low profile, or both will be (since the top slot can fit either low profile or regular size). I've spoken to people who claim to have put 2X512 MB in their Bondis.
Replacing the battery is just a matter of taking the old one out and putting the new one in.

  • What is the maximum ram upgrade possible on a Mid 2011 iMac 21.5-inch

I have an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 running OS X 10.9.5 which currently has 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram. The Hard Drive has 149.87 GB free out of 499.25 GB. It has been running slow for a while now. I would like to know what is the "TRUE" maximum Ram Upgrade possible. The reason I say "TRUE" is because the specs say one things when I find others saying another. I would like to install the maximum Ram that will increase the speed to its optimum. I have read some information that this particular computer will not take advantage of anything past a certain amount of ram.
So with all that said, I am asking for specific numbers, types of ram, suggestions etc etc...
    Thanks

Here's what you can do and need:
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Sources for memory I recommend are:
    OWC
    DataMem

        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
