20" studio display & AGP G4

i bought a 20" flat panel LCD acrylic studio display and can't get it to work with my power mac G4 AGP "sawtooth". i have the display hooked via DVI to ADC adapter like i did with my 17" flat panel LCD acrylic studio display, which worked fine. the 20" starts, i see the gray screen and the little gear is spinning as the system starts up but then it goes black and turns off. this is the second 20" display to do this so i do not think both displays are defective. any ideas whats wrong?

What resolution setting do you have on the G4? It might not be compatible with the monitor.

  • Dual Studio displays and midi timepiece setup

I have a G5 dual 2.7 GHz - with a 22" studio display and am trying to setup a 17"studio display as a second monitor. I bought a DVI to ADC Adapter for the 17". But when i went to plug the USB cable in, found out that I don't have enough usb ports. There are 2 on the back and one is being used by my 22" display and the other by a midi timepiece. This is a pretty elementary question but could i just buy a USB Hub that would give me additional USB outlets? Any other suggestions?

    Hi
The original AGP Graphics/Sawtooth G4 doesn't support graphics cards with an ADC connector, as the logic board lacks the extra power 'slot' just above the standard AGP slot, which provides power to the ADC connector and display. I expect that's why the stock graphics card you currently have doesn't have an ADC connector to begin with.
Similarly you can't really convert a VGA port, which is analogue, into digital DVI or ADC, which is needed for the Apple Studio displays. Adapters do exist, but they can cost $400 as they have to convert an analogue video signal to digital. You'd also lose some quality due to the analogue to digital conversion.
    The options are:
Buy a replacement AGP graphics card with two DVI connectors, along with two DVI to ADC adapters. I don't think a Mac compatible card with two DVI ports (that would work in your G4 with x2 AGP) exists though.
Buy a second Mac compatible (PCI) graphics card with a DVI connector, along with two DVI to ADC adapters. The Radeon 7000 (now discontinued) or Radeon 9200 (still available) would be possible options. More info can be found here:
    http://ati.de/products/radeon7000/radeon7000me/index.html
    http://ati.de/products/radeon9200/radeon9200me/specs.html
Unfortunately neither option is cheap though, as in both cases you need two DVI to ADC adapters.

  • Connecting Studio Display 17' To iMac

hey, my mom had a old mac with the silver tower. And she had a studio Display 17" and she just recently got a cinema dispaly and gave the screen to me. I am wondering what adapters i need to connect the Studio Display 17" TO my iMac G5. Thanks.

    Hi
You need to use a DVI to ADC adapter. They're available from Apple or Dr. Bott. The ADC connector was introduced with the Gigabit Ethernet G4s and requires an extra power connector on the logic board just above the standard AGP slot. The Sawtooth models lack this, hence the power has to be supplied externally via an adapter. Unfortunately they're fairly expensive as the adapter includes the power supply.

I haven't used any of those retailers, but I did research Royal Discount in the past and there stuff was legit. As a rule of the thumb when a company has thousands of reviews and the negative reviews don't sound too terrible I would feel comfortable with a couple of hundred dollars.

  • Apple Mac Studio Display 23" cinema with plastic surround

Does anyone have any idea what this monitor might be worth nowadays.

I'm not sure exactly which ATI Rage 128 video card you have. If your video card has only a VGA output, and your display is the clear acrylic ADC version, you'll probably have to replace the video card with one with DVI digital output. As far as I know, there aren't any VGA-to-DVI or VGA-to-ADC adapters. Alternately, there are lots of LCD monitors for PCs that have VGA 15-pin inputs, and that would be the easy way to go.
If there are 2 outputs on the card, a VGA 15-pin and a DVI-D connector (that's what's on my AGP graphics G4, and it looks sort of like a SCSI port with a flat pin at one end), and you have one of the clear 15" ADC Studio Displays, you need to get one of Apple's DVI-to-ADC adapters, $99.95 at the Apple store. It will plug into the DVI output and supply power for the display.
There are early model Apple 15" Studio Displays, a Blue & White version which has a VGA input which will work with your card, and a Graphite version which I think has a DVI connector.

  • Studio Display: power but no video??

I have a Studio Display monitor connected to Quicksilver G4 via the ADC cable. The monitor is getting power but there's no video. I don't have access to another ADC-equipped computer for testing. Any ideas as to where the problem might lie?

Check to make sure your video card is firmly in place in the AGP or PCI slot. If l not firmly in place it can cause a black screen on boot. Also, is the backlight on the monitor lighting up when you start the monitor? Try holding a flashlight or other bright light up to the monitor to see if you can see anything, if you can see something then its working, but A) the backlight is turned down, or B) the backlight is dead.

  • Studio displays and G4

Will an Apple 21" studio display with the built in 4-port USB hub work with a sawtooth G4? I believe these have a 15 pin VGA, right?

I saw that your equipment configuration was the same as mine, and hoped you might have some advice on a problem that I posted this evening. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
My 17-inch studio display CRT monitor (which was working fine) recently died, and I purchased a used, but 'swear-to-goodness-still-functioning' 21-inch studio display CRT monitor from Ebay to use with my G4/ACP Graphic/desktop Power Mac.
When I installed the new monitor, (connecting the three cables: AC power, VGA and USB), and restarted the computer I saw a clear (but horizontally compressed) band of picture about 4 inches wide running from the top to the bottom of the monitor for the first 30 secs of startup. Then the click of a relay and the picture disappears to leave a black screen. After that, all that happens is a constant 'fluttering' sound from the back of the monitor.
I tried restarting and zapping the PRAM, but no change.
Would welcome any suggestions on what to try next....

  • Apple Studio Display USB Hub Evaporated Again

I had this before and thought it was due to updates and my G4MDD DP1GHZ, however after installing the smelly new PSU, the USB Hub in the Apple Studio Display worked for 3 days, that was with the Apple USB Keyboard and Mouse connected to it. Today I got home, and fired up the computer and wanted to install a CD with updates. The mouse was working. Though when I tried to open the superdrive with the open superdrive key on the keyboard above the star sign on the number entry area of the keyboard, the superdrive would not respond, I opened it with the mouse from the Finder Bar, I put in the CD and then the mouse and keyboard went dead, no connection through the Bus on the Apple Studio Display. I forced shut down, holding my finger over the on/off illuminated switch on the Apple Studio Display. I waited and booted up and there was nothing to the keyboard or mouse so I unplugged it from one USB socket on the display and fully plugged it into the other on the display. Again nothing. So I got my USB extension cord out and fully plugged that in to the USB Hub on the rear of the G4. Mouse and Keyboard working again I searched for the HUB in the Apple Studio Display in Apple System Profiler and it had again evaporated like it had for six months before, after I replaced the original PSU with the exchanged smelly one, it sprang back to life for the last three or so days, working happily but alas, a repeat evaporation. Who knows why?
I'll just repeat that the keyboard and the mouse are fine, again fully plugged into the onboard USB Bus, does the Apple Studio Display have any diagnostic software available able to detect the functionality of the USB Hub in the Apple Studio Display? That would be a help in sussing out what is really happening between the Radeon 9000 Pro and the Apple Studio Display.
May I add that the Display part of the Apple Studio Display works fine.
    Please advise.

After taking another look inside the Case and checking the screws which secured the Radeon 9000 Pro AGP/PCI Card, I removed the screw for the Radeon, the card sprang away to it's preferred location in the AGP Slot and I put the screw back in, now the USB in the Apple Studio is working every boot.
I suspect that the heat in the case has warped the Radeon Card which then sprang it into an undesirable angle in the AGP slot causing a poor contact to the pins which connect the USB part to the Apple Studio Display.
Just to add. I do unplug the telephone line from the wall and the Power Cord from the wall socket after shutting down. This is because I do not trust the Power or the Telephone Company after losing the internal modem and the original power supply in 2007.
Touch wood and hope for the best. I can't say I have the same confidence in the products made in China and assembled in Singapore I had when I originally purchased this computer in Australia in 2003. Buyer beware.

  • Setting up a Studio display on a G4

i would like to set up a 17" Apple Studio monitor with my G4 AGP (1 gig RAM) and an ATI Rage 128 pro ADC card. i have heard great things about these monitors. is there anything i need to know/have prepared/downloaded to make this combo work, or is everything i need already in my OS 10.4.11? any opinions/thoughts on this set?

odd thing, i plugged in the card, hooked everything up, using my VGA monitor instead of the ADC Studio display. when i started up the machine, the screen of my monitor was all Blues and greens.......no reds at all. is the card at fault, or did i not install right? its not the monitor, as it works just fine on other machines and this one with my old video card put back in. i would like to use my studio monitor, and put my VGA back on the machine i had it on before. do i need to get another card?

  • Dual ADC Apple Studio Displays (clear acrylic) with Mac Mini

I currently have the old school Apple Studio Display ADC monitor hooked up to my Mac Mini using the ADC to DVI adapter. I have a second Studio ADC Display and another ADC to DVI adapter to run Dual Displays. I just bought a SEE 2 XTREME DVI to USB which is used for adding multiple monitors. I have it all hooked up. Its just basic plug and play after installing the Mac driver. My second monitor power light just flashes and wont turn on...Any suggestions? I already made sure both monitors and both ADC to DVI adapters worked, and they do. Please Help!! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

yea, I checked that out about the light flashes. I have tried both monitors seperately and they both work fine...just not with this DVI to USB dual monitor adapter. Also, when I had them hooked up individually, I made sure the resolution was set the same in the system preferences > displays.

  • Mac Mini and 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC)

Is there someone who can tell me if there is a DVI to ADC Adapter to get a Mac Mini to work with the beautiful 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC). Which is an anolog monitor, the adapters i can find work only on LCD (digital) screens.
    Please let me know...

Do NOT buy the Apple DVI to ADC adapter, it does not work with CRT displays.
The 'geniuses' at the Apple store recommended that I buy this adapter. It didn't work. I have since found out (after extensively surfing the web) that I am not the only one who has been recommended to buy this adapter by an Apple 'genius'. However, It is simply not designed to work with the CRT's, it is LCD only.
There is no way to make the ADC 17" CRT studio display work with new non ADC Apple hardware. Apple have simply dismissed it, much to the annoyance of all the customers who had purchased this perfectly respectable display.
If you want to use your Mac Mini you will need to use either a non-Apple display or one of their new displays. Your perfectly functioning CRT is now a doorstop.
