2005 iMac G5 (PPC) System Failure

Lately I've been having system failures, seemingly-randomly, happening once every couple days. I have to do a hard reset to fix the problem.
I only have 2-3 windows open (iTunes, Safari usually) and am not running a huge amount of processes.
What's the issue here? How do I fix it?
Any suggestions would be most welcome!
Anxiously,
Alex from Kalispell

You do have very minimal RAM. RAM is pretty cheap nowadays, it might be easy to upgrade. If you do that, I'd put in as much as your Mac can handle (2GB, 4 GB or 8 GB even if it can take that much, it makes a huge difference in performance). However I don't think not enough RAM would cause kernel panics. Not enough RAM might lead to very slow performance (due to the fact that when your Mac runs out of RAM it has to move information back and forth on the hard drive, which is relatively slow).
If you have your original Mac OS disks (CDs or DVDs) that came with the Mac, you can boot from those and run the hardware diagnostic test. It tests all the hardware inside your Mac. It might find something that is not working to spec and could be causing the kernel panics. The tests include RAM, by the way, and one cause of kernel panics is bad RAM. There are other utilties you can download off the internet to test your RAM, by the way.
I would also try using your Mac without the printer connected for a few days to see if the problems goes away or repeats. Even a bad USB cable can cause them. While you are at it, check all cables to make sure they are fully seated in their connectors.
Certain software issues can cause kernel panic, but that is not as common as hardware problems. The troubleshooting steps in the link I provided, and some of the additional suggestions here, might help you track this down.

  • Problems with ram on new imac... system failure???

just bought a new 24 imac... since the less expensive way to get more ram is known, i bought it separatley (1 gb), after i used it, it worked for a month with no problems at all... but about 3 days ago it started shutting down and would not work. I took the computer down to the apple centre but all they did was scream at me for putting in the ram... they cant seem to solve the problem, they are sure it is the ram... im not...
    any ideas??? pls im desperate

Well, if it's a RAM problem, there are three possibilities:
    1) The new RAM is bad. In that case, they would remove it, tell you that's the problem, and give your computer back.
    2) The RAM that came with the computer is bad. In that case, they would remove it, replace it, and give you your computer back.
    3) Both RAM sticks were bad (this is unlikely). In that case, they'd remove the new, replace the original, and give your computer back.
If it's in service, they would/should run a hardware check on it, which would show whether the memory stick are bad. That would/should be their first step.
Since they say that the computer is not working again, chances are that the problem is not because of the RAM. You are also within your rights to ask what they initially did to diagnose the problem. If "run a hardware test" isn't part of what they tell you, they didn't do a very thorough job.
This could be caused any number of things -- from the actual RAM slots being bad to a faulty power supply and a lot of things in between.

  • I have a 2005 imac, why can't I run mountain lion

What is it about my imac that can't run mountain lion

You mean other than the fact that 2005 iMacs are PowerPC systems, and no version of Mac OS X since 10.6 was introduced will run on them?

Can anyone point me to a bulletin?  I can only find instructions for as far back as 2006.
Where Can I Find How to Change RAM in a 2005 iMac, 1.8 GHz PPC G5?

  • Q's-Wiping/Reinstalling iMac G5 PPC (10.4.11) for donation

My parents recently purchased a new 2012, 21.5” Intel Core i, iMac with OS 10.8 installed.
They wish to donate their old iMac G5 ALS PowerPC (20”) computer to a local charity. It came with OS 10.4 installed and they never upgraded, but did install all Tiger updates to 10.4.11.
Before donation, I want to wipe the hard drive, and then do a clean install of OS 10.4, iWork ’06 and MacFonts2, from their original discs.
    Additional information:
                  > The original RAM (512k) was replaced by 2 - 1 GB cards in Dec ’11.
                    > The OS X discs are as follows:
                          Disc 1 = Mac OS X Install Disc 1              Disc 2 = Mac OS X Install Disc 2
Mac OS ver. 10.4                                     Disc ver. 1.0
                                       AHT ver. 2.5.1                                          2Z691-5493-A
Disc ver. 1.0                                             Includes Mac OS 9.2
               2Z691-5317-A
Because Apple no longer supports the PowerPCs AND Tiger OS 10.4, the only way I could transfer my parents’ files and maintain their original dates, etc. is by plugging a Fire-Wire 9-6 Pin Cable cord into the iMac G5 PPC, and to a Thunderbolt to Fire-Wire adapter, which in turn, was plugged into my 2012 Mac Mini (OS 10.8).  Then by putting the PPC iMac in Target disc mode, I could copy over (almost) all files.
Unfortunately, figuring this all out took a long time, because my background has been in PC’s since 1984.  I briefly owned an iMac Pro in 2006 before it was stolen from my car. Unfortunately I could not afford to replace it due to a high deductible on my Homeowner’s Policy.
When my parents purchased their new iMac, I decided to get a Mac Mini, to help them adjust to the jump from Tiger to Mountain Lion, etc.
    Here are my concerns:
    1.  I was able to copy most of the old folders on the PPC iMac to a “holding” folder on the desktop of my Mac Mini.
Then I compared the “Get Info” of the Source file/folder to the Target disc’s file/folder “Get Info”.  Most folders copied over with no differences noted.
Should I be concerned about those files that would not duplicate?
How / where can I find out which files are okay, if they aren’t completely duplicated?
(since I will need some application/system files from the copied files).
                                  Examples of these are:
    System / Library / Frameworks / JavaVM.framework
    System / Library / PrivateFrameworks / Install.Framework / Versions
    System / Library                          Size                            Files
                 Source folder                1,893,633,028                     36,066
                 Target folder                  1,514,639,237            26,653
              Difference                     378,993,791              9,413
          Missing                                                 378,671,851                        9,358  Frameworks / JavaVM.framework
          Missing                                    321,940                   55  PrivateFrameworks/Install.Framework/Versions
                                                                           0                            0
    2.  How can I install all the Tiger updates from 10.2 thru 10.11, if I cannot do a clean download straight from Apple.com?
    > If I am to copy the updates from the Target disc files that I copied to my Mac Mini, will they be recognized as legal copies?
    > If so, how do I identify the correct update files to target? (i.e., are they hidden?).
    > How do I find them in the system folders?
    3.  I don’t want to wipe the hard drive until I know I’ve got the stuff I need to properly reinstall the OS to 10.4.11, afterwards.
Somewhere I read that I might need to use a stand-alone installer so I can target specific files in specific areas.
Can anyone make sense out of all this information?
It is probably very telling that I have a PC background with the kind of questions posed above.
I have Googled many issues and have called AppleCare on my parents behalf to get to this point.  I think I am close to being able to wipe the iMac G5, but need some answers and MORE importantly, some MORAL SUPPORT!
Note: my parents will be 80 years old this year, and the new Mac is their 3rd Mac since 1999.
They recently learned how to use a first generation iPad that was given to them.  A couple about to celebrate 60 years together and never afraid to learn something new!
Sorry about the length of this query. I will be on and off the ‘net during the next couple of days, but I will get back to any queries for clarification ASAP.
When I’m not working on one of my computers, I volunteer at a local library. THANKS!

I was so happy returning home to find the reformat phase complete. Now... not so much.
I am stuck at two different points and don't know at which I SHOULD be, and if once there, what to do in order to get the iMac to copy
OS X 10.4 Disc 1 onto the harddrive.
Note: Research indicates that OS X must be present on the harddrive first/before the accompanying software can be installed from Disc 2.
    Method #1:
    > Inserted Install Disc 1 into the optical drive (built-in side of monitor in a G5 PPC).
    > Pushed power button (Held down no keys).
    > Language choice screen appears first.  Default is English, so I click 'enter.'
    > Window titled "Install Mac OS X" appears.  It also contains the wording "Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer."
I click "Continue" tab at bottom right of this window.
    > At "Software License Agreement" window, click "Continue" tab at bottom right.
    > Pop-down screen prompts me to AGREE to terms in order to continue installation.
    > "Select a Destination" window shows the harddrive icon to the iMac with a red circle/white exclamation point on it.
    > I click on "harddrive" icon (no explanation for red circle was given at this window).
    > Message shows up on the Select Destination window indicating Mac OS X cannot be installed on this volume AND
Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume.
         >> I can either Go Back, quit Installer by clicking on the Startup Disk button, or click Restart.
    OR
         >> Use options on the Apple Menu bar at top of monitor screen to do the same.  Under Installer, I can select "Quit Installer,"
or chose "Startup Disk" from the Utilities dropdown.
         * Restart is self-explanatory.
         * Startup Disk brings a new window titled "Choose Startup Disk."  There are two icon options to select from.
              1. Disk titled "OS X 10.4 Disc 1." - it's title is highlighted in blue, indicating this has been selected automatically.
              2. Network Startup (but icon has question mark on it).
Only a "Restart" button is available here. After clicking this button, a popdown asks if I am sure I want to restart the computer
using the OS X Disk to boot. i.e., Cancel or Restart.
Method #2:  (Note: research indicated these are the correct icons/options I should see for PowerPC computers.
    > Inserted Install Disc 1 into the optical drive.
    > Hold the "option"/("alt") key down while pushing the power button on.  Hold key until 4 items show up on screen.
    > The four items are:
              1.  Refresh Icon button
              2.  Square with Disk Icon and "X" on it - titled "Mac OS X Install Disc 1"
              3.  Square with Disk Icon and tiny monitor on it - titled "Apple Hardware Test"
              4.  Right Arrow Icon button
    > Research indicated that the two options here are:
         >> Click the Disk Icon w/ Monitor, followed by the Right Arrow Icon button. (This is to check for possible hardware or software problems).
    OR
         >> Click the Disk Icon w/"X", followed by the Refresh Icon button.
When I do the second step (X & R), it results in the same results as Method #1.
Q: What special chant must I say to make the installation disk install onto the iMac's harddrive?
Note: I did both a Utility Disk Verify on the harddrive AND the Apple Hardware Test (long version), with no problems noted at all!
    Q. I found an archived Q&A on the Tiger 10.4.11 forum that made reference to downloadable instructions for reformatting and reinstalling Tiger.
But, like several other archived Q&A's, when I clicked on the link, it took me back to Apple's main Support page.
I'm guessing because Apple no longer supports Tiger, that all links relating to Tiger are severed.  Are these Archived pages only available to forum      participants whom have achieved high Levels?  The Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update for PPCs link appears to have the very information I looked for      ad nauseum during Jan/Feb/Mar of this year, and never found!

Thank you once again BDAqua for your timely answer and suggestions.  When I read your reply, the 3-pass was almost 1/3 complete, so I decided to hang in there and wait.  I did do another repair on the harddrive afterwards, and it appears to be fine.   our explanation of the use of solved and helpful feedback was appreciated too.  I dont' want to use them up too soon, and it appears the options stay open until someone selects one.
Also rccharles I appreciate your suggested software packages that could help with the duplication of the entire harddrive. I did use the Target Disk Made, through Firewire to Thunderbolt with my Mac Mini and most of the folders copied over 100% problem free the first time, but there always seem to be stragglers out there!
Will tackle this all again in the a.m.

  • IMac G5 PPC Using OS X 10.4.10 & OS X Classic Mode--Can They Work Together?

I do not have a system folder for OS 9 on my hard drive and an Apple technician said I cannot run OS 9 Classic mode on my computer. However, David Pogue's book "Mac OS X Tiger Edition, The Missing Manual" and many of these Apple discussion posts seem to indicate that running Mac OS 9 on my iMac G5 PPC with OS X 10.4.10 should be possible. Would someone be able to help me? Can I run the Classic mode and, if so, how would I get the necessary stuff into my computer? I still have my original Mac OS X Tiger (includes Xcode 2) Install DVD version 10.4. Thanks!

Hi, Mark. You may have misunderstood the Apple technician. I hope so, because if he said what you thought he said, he was dead wrong. You can indeed run old OS 9-based applications in Classic mode on your G5, if you use the Classic-support installer you'll find on one of the discs that came with the computer to install a suitable OS 9 System Folder on your hard drive. What you can't do on the G5 is run OS 9 *as an operating system*, without OS X running at all. Classic mode uses a slightly modified version of OS 9 as a sort of super-application or "shell" within which older, non-OSX-native applications can run under OS X.
Check the "Read before you install" file(s) on your original iMac OS Installer Disc 1 for instructions on installing Classic support from that disc or set of discs.

  • All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software

All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software. Any ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it?

10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like  a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

Just saw the Imac 20" PPC Isight at Costco for $1495...The last time I saw an Imac at costco it was the G3 when they dumped...The store was selling them very quickly too!
    Imac G5 Rev B 1gig ram   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

The Costco in San Diego at Carmel Mountain had about
12-16 of them last night. I tipped off a friend who
was looking for a Mac. A good deal, especially since
it includes the 3 year AppleCare.
I couldn't justify buying one myself, but I did pick
up a 300 GB Maxtor external drive so I could do
    mirror back-ups of my system
The demo had iLife 05. Since these are being sold after iLife 06 was released and Apple ad says they should have iLife 06 will Apple upgrade it for free? Well maybe free after their $10 media charge.
If not I'd put my non-family pack iLife 06 on it license agreement or not. It should have come with it in the first place.

  • Migrating Data from old iMac G5 (PPC) to new iMac QC i7

I have had an iMac G5 PPC for about 6 years. The logic board just died about 2 weeks ago.
I am about to purchase a new 27" iMac Quad-core i7 machine, and I am wondering what is the best way to migrate data from the old machine to the new one.
I have a few different questions...
I use SuperDuper! to backup, so I do have a full copy of my hard drive on an external drive. But the data is about 2 weeks older than the hard drive on my G5 (meaning, I backed up about 2 weeks before the machine died, so there is data on there that I'd love to retrieve). I understand that I can pull the hard drive out of the iMac G5 and buy a cable to attach it to the new machine. I also understand that I can attach my external drive (with the SuperDuper! copy of my hard drive) to the new iMac, too, and run Migration Assistant (or Set Up Assistant) to transfer data.
However, I have heard that it is not good to do a straight migration from a Power PC to an Intel machine.
    Is that true?
I would ideally like to transfer all my email (tens of thousands of them), my iPhoto library, my iTunes library, iCal, many many documents, and some other random stuff.
    What do you recommend?
Should I do an automatic migration using Set Up Assistant and my external hard drive with the SuperDuper copy?
Should I (and can I?) do an automatic migration with the hard drive that I pull from the old machine?
Or should I (can I?) do a manual migration whereby I only copy the folders/files/libraries that I really want, and avoid clogging up the new machine with PowerPC apps, etc., that the new (Intel) iMac might not like?
This last one seems like the ideal choice, but I am not sure...and I don't know exactly how to go about that process.
Apologies for the long post, and many thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
    Best,
    Matt

automatic migration works well for most people but problems are possible both because of architecture and system differences.

you can try automatic migration first. if you are worried about possible problems you can choose to migrate user data only but no applications. this should reduce the likelihood of conflicts. but if you run into problems you can always erase and install and do manual migration. since you have a superduper backup this option is not going away and is always available.
see this link on how to go about that

This last one seems like the ideal choice, but I am not sure...and I don't know exactly how to go about that process.
Apologies for the long post, and many thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
    Best,
    Matt

  • System Failure

When I started up my G5 imac yesterday, it instructed me to do a restart - nothing else on the screen.  My only option was to use the power button to shut it down.  When I attempted to start up again, I received a dozen lines of "info" which I understood nothing of except for the words "system failure".  Can anyone tell me what this probably means?  I am hoping this implies a circuitry issue, and not a hard drive failure.  I haven't been as regular as I should at backing up files, etc.  Any ideas/help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

There are companies who can repair the logic board, so you don't have to pay the full tilt replacement cost; but that would mean the board would have to be removed and certain parts that come off easily, taken off, in order to send the board into a testing and repair facility.
I'd check to see if anyone has posted a how-to youtube video on how to use a fine de-soldering tool to remove a failed memory chip on a logic board, and a fine soldering tool to install a suitable spec like-build replacement RAM chip on the logic board. There are some about how people fixed portable Mac computer boards, and this has been going on since some users chose to fix out-of-warranty iBook G4s in the later model years that had the cory allen and other effect issue. A solder service where re-balling helped some of those more permanently, since some did not require chip replacement.
To have a company test the board beyond just a failed on-board RAM, would help resolve the possibility that the graphic processor chip could also be among those with a partial failure history. Some users of the G5 iMac were able to resolve issues by resoldering or replacement of on-board other components. A few newer intel-based iMacs have also seen user-innovation where unprescribed actions were used to re-solder logic boards in a household oven at melty temperatures over a certain time. Not too melty, and all at once.
To contact some company that has a major workstation for resolding even the processor and graphics cards, to logic boards or other parts, would be one to ask. Some of them do their own work and offer spares that are either new-old-stock or ones they have in-house tested and thoroughly; and repaired, then retested. I'd call a company such as wegenermedia with the product serial number, and model identifier, and ask. Another source may be powermax, powerbookmedic, owc, and maybe to get another possible shocker, ask places that may not even deal in older hardware at all. Just to see what they say. If the cost is to high, you can check into these companies repaired older models, should you have software for a specific vintage you need to use.
Not sure how accurate the iFixit take apart guides or repair guides are, but a matter of detailed assembly or disassembly that involves  down time, tends to let people who only do one of these in their life, forget important details and the on-the-fly learning of fine motor skills you were careful to use during takeapart... Before the orginal fixed part or suitable replacement finally arrives. An advantage to getting the original repaired, is that the serial number would likely be the same, if not flashed.
Usually capacitors or power supply items are a demise of these G5s, and some G4s.
So your choice is to ask some questions by email and free 800 number service people to see what they say; then if the news and level of difficulty is not worth the explorative surgery, then a replacement device may be an answer. There are several Intel-based Macs, restored & repaired, that could run older OS X if that's where your software needs are. Newer hardware usually necessitates other upgrades, as you know.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Catastrophic system failure on internal drive, can I do this safely?

I've had a catastrophic system failure on the internal drive of my iMac, but I have a perfectly working bootable clone of everything as of yesterday. Can I just boot up on the clone, demount the internal drive, and continue to work safely? I would just use CCC to clone back the good drive, but I don't have 4 hours to wait. I am trying to complete an FCP project on a tight deadline. What say u? thx!!!

When I work from my clone (Firewire 800) I notice no performance hit. Even on my FW 400 disk, I notice no performance hit. Do a Permissions Repair from Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility on the disk when you first boot up.
All your applications should run fine. AFA rendering, that is more dependent on your clock speed than and RAM than on the connection of the drive.

  • Post gong black strips with white type. System Failure: cpu=0;  etc. HELP

I happened to plug in a palm pilot dock unit to my keyboard while my machine was booting up and although it may have noting to do with it, I now have the grey screen with the system failure message. The first line ends with "Corrupt Stack" and it goes on with "unaligned frame address" etc.
I tried to boot from the Tiger install disk, but no luck and the same result. Booted and held the x key. Booted and held the c key. Nada.
    Is it dead?
    Steve

Weird...after closing down and rebooting with a Tiger install disk (which my drive wouldn't read), and holding down my mouse buttoms, it's back like nothing ever happened. I just cleaned up my permissions and will now look for some utilities to figure out what's up. I'm getting a new iMac in a couple of weeks, so hopefully Ole Bess will hold up until then.
