2005 PowerBookG4- Replace Power PC w/ Intel Processor- Possible?

I have a 2005 Powerbook G4, PowerPC, version 10.5.8. I want to know if I can get an Intel (or other) processor to replace the old Power PC, and with that, install the current OS, which I think is now Mountain Lion. In othe words, I want to avail myself of the latest software innovations, and am willing to cobble together the hardware to make that happen, within reason. I like the physical design and architecture of the old G4 and am reluctant to part ways with it. Is this at all possible/practical,, or just too much $$ and hassle? I'm an old school guy who is happy luggin' around an older 'heavy' PC andf can do without tablets asnd such.

Its amazing how many people come in here and always ask this question or same sets of questions over and over again. Can PowerPC G4/G5/G3 be upgradable to Intel? Can I place an Intel processor in my Powerbook??, I don't mean to be rude or come off sounding bad towards those who ask these questions, but its getting rather long in the tooth.
PowerPC Macs, depending on which you have can go as high as 10.5.8 Leopard and thats all. Some can only go as far as 10.4.11, but those would be your low end PowerPC machines.
The best PowerPC Macs for Leopard would be the following:
G4 MDD dual 1.25/1.42
Any upgraded G4 based machine with a strong graphics card for core image(speeds up video acceleration under OS X) and processor. e.g.: Sawtooth G4 500 upgraded to 2.0Ghz PowerLogix.
All G5's in my opinion should have no problems running Leopard up to and including 10.5.8.
G3's are best suited for Tiger 10.4.11 and Panther 10.3.9(Low low end G3s).
A rule of the thumb: if its PowerPC it can't be upgraded to INTEL, period!
Hope I wasn't too rude.. didn't mean to ruffle any feathers here. Just tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
enough ranting! Now, who's up for installing Leopard on their PowerPC Mac?

  • G5 tower, dual 1.8 power pc (can I replace with "INTEL" processors)

Is it possible or worth it to replace my G5 towers "POWER PC" processor with new "INTEL" processor ???

Hi Tellastrat, and a warm welcome to the forums!
AS Niel says no, you'd need all the other parts including Logic Board, RAM, Power Supply, Graphics Card, & een a new case, or a lot of machining on the G5's case to fit everything... they only look similar outside... sorry.

  • Installing an intel processor on a power mac G5 (2004) with mac os Xpanther

    Hi everyone,
I really need some help, I need to update my Power Mac G5 because I discover that almost every single new upgrade for Final Cut Pro is for Intel Macs, so i would like to know if it is possible to install this processor to my oldie computer or can I upgrade my panther system to a leopard and being able to run the new programs??'. Thanks a lot
    Eugenia

You can't install an Intel processor in your G5. For Intel you need to buy a new/newer Mac.
Here's the *Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements*
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24950 To upgrade, you can skip Tiger 10.4.
Recommend you increase RAM more than the minimum.

  • This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure for Intel (R) Audio Display

Hi I just bought HP Envy M7 Sleekbook last week and upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 for Windows 8.
Now I have no sound and this is the error message I get:
This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure  (for  Intel (R) Audio Display)
under Sound, Vieo and Game Controllers in the Device Manager.
Anyone else having this issue after upgrading?
Getting a new lappy is stressful enough but to alreay have issues is ridiculous
If the upgrade is not the issue could something have happened in transit? (I have an issue with the way Best Buy packed it for shipment and wonder if it could have been compromised)
Any help is appreciated. Or should Ibe taing this back to best buy and have them address it?
    Thanks
    Pam

Ahmed, if your HP Envy has an Intel processor chances are it will be necessary to download new drivers for both sound and chipset due to compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. After 4-1/2 hours on the phone with various technical agents and a lot of frustration I finally got one who had the knowledge and training to resolve my issue. I believe he downloaded the new drivers from the HP support site. Good luck!!

  • Backward Compatibility of New Intel Processor Mac Mini

Will the data files and applications like Quicken 2006 on my old Power Processor Mac Mini transfer to the new Intel Processor Mac Mini?
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Data files will certainly transfer, though applications are not always a matter of such certainty. Most will, but a few non-Intel native ones may not - or may run but not run perfectly if they were not written to conform to the programming guidelines and thus not be fully compatible with Rosetta.
It would do no hard to try, though if you plan to be reliant on PPC applications from your G4 system, be aware that running under Rosetta, they are not likely to give you notable performance gains, even if you max out the RAM in the Intel model. If you plan to update software to Intel-native versions or have those already, a move to the Intel platform will give you significant performance advantages.

  • Can an iMac G4 be upgraded to an Intel processor?

I was wondering can an iMac G4 be upgraded to an Intel processor? This stems from the whole PPC no longer being supported by Adobe Flash etc.

    No.

No if you do replace it you have to get an AMD...the AMDs all have the same type of socket and the Intels are completely different.

  • Using Modem MA034Z with MacBook Pro with Intel Processor

I have just bought the MacBook Pro to replace my old PowerBook G4 but find I no longer have an internal modem (Thanks Apple!! - we dont all send all our time in major metropolises)
I have read a couple of reviews stating the MA034Z apple modem does not work with the Intel processor in the MacBook Pro. Any substantiation?
Can anyone guide me to an external modem that works. I just need simple dial up - no faxing

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have the Apple USB Model MA034 external modem which I got when I bought my MBP in September 2007. I have used it for dial up internet ever since, and have had absolutely no issues with it. I use it for dial up both at home and when I travel. It works perfectly.
I find it hard to imagine that Apple would provide a modem that would not work with the MBP. It may be worth reviewing the reviews, and possibly posting a link so that their assertions about the modem can be evaluated.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot upgrade my Power Mac G5 Dual Processor (CPU type: PowerPC G5  (3.0))  to Mac OS 10.4 - anybody knows how to do this

Trying desperately to upgrade my Power Mac G5 Dual Processor to Mac OS X.4 - what kind of upgrade is needed? How may I proceed?

    Hello Jens,
Might be easier to get Leo/10.5.x
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.

  • Please update dv5 BIOS (with Intel Processors)

    Dear HP engineers
I have notice that there is high-frequency noise in my dv5 laptop. The noise is came from the CPU.  Disable Processor C4 state (or disable CPU Power Management in BIOS) can solve this problem. I googled this problem, and found that many people can hear this kind of high-frequency noise (very different from HD or Fan noise) with different brand of laptops. They solve it by disabling CPU Power Management in BIOS. And this problem CANNOT be solve by changing Power Options in Windows.
However, there is no such Processor C4 state (or Processor Power Management) options in BIOS setting page. There is only Processor C6 states option. I disabled the C6 State but nothing happens, CPU power management still enabling by the BIOS.
If I let CPU work in high usage (such as run video convert), the noise will completely disappear. When the CPU in idle, noise appears again.
I'm already on the latest BIOS F.21 (dv5 / Intel Processors). The noise is really annoying me. I would prefer to hear noise from Hard Drive or Fan, but I don't want to hear the high-frequency noise from CPU.
I hope HP engineers could add Processor Power Management option in dv5 BIOS, as many of other brands have this function.
    Regards
    Chris

If its a Dual Core keep in mind , Dual Core processors are rated at a much higher speed then what is listed on the box. Thats because the CPU acts as 2 and has twice the processing power. Its like 1.6ghz+1.6ghz= 3.2 ghz

  • P300 SFF power supply and Intel Wirelss - N7260 card!

I have a ThinkCentre 280 watt PS and was wonder if they are the same demensions as the P300 SFF (AK30).  If not; how about the P300 tower?  Love to get a 450 watt inside!
If that cannot be done; is there any outside silent power supply manufacturers other then FSP that make replacement power supplies for Lenovo Think line of desktops?   Just need a little more power to move my graphic card from my Thinkcentre 58P!  which takes 70 watts instead of the limit of 40 watts.  There are very few graphic cards that have such a low limit now a days.  Most have at least 60 watts and the average is 90 watts according to graphics card review website!
Also, where do you install the  Intel® Wireless – N 7260 802.11 b/g/n, 2 x 2, 2.4 GHz WiFi + Bluetooth® 4.0? I like to get this card.  Is there a instruction data sheet on this?  See fact sheet link below for Intel Wireless N7260 shown below: http://www.lenovo.com/shop/emea/content/pdf/ThinkStation/en/thinkstation-p300-datasheet.pdf

I'm not sure I'm understanding all your questions here, but I'll take a shot....
"I have a ThinkCentre 280 watt PS and was wonder if they are the same demensions as the P300 SFF (AK30).  If not; how about the P300 tower?  Love to get a 450 watt inside!"
I don't know the answer to this.  What platform did the ThinkCenter 280W PSU come from originally?  I don't really have access to desktops, so it might be tough to answer this.  The P300 has a 450W power supply as an option, so maybe I'm unclear on what you're trying to do here.
"If that cannot be done; is there any outside silent power supply manufacturers other then FSP that make replacement power supplies for Lenovo Think line of desktops?   Just need a little more power to move my graphic card from my Thinkcentre 58P!  which takes 70 watts instead of the limit of 40 watts.  There are very few graphic cards that have such a low limit now a days.  Most have at least 60 watts and the average is 90 watts according to graphics card review website!"
I can't really speak for what aftermarket power supplies would work in the desktop lines if that's what you're attempting to do.  For P300, full x16 slots should be able to support the 75W spec (note that one of the slots on P300 is a x16 mechanical but x4 electrical slot).
"Also, where do you install the  Intel® Wireless – N 7260 802.11 b/g/n, 2 x 2, 2.4 GHz WiFi + Bluetooth® 4.0? I believe this will be a PCIe x1 card that can install into any available PCIe slot.  I think there is a cable connection to an internal USB port if you want to utilize the bluetooth functionality of the card.

Will it work if I connect via usb instead of firewire?
No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

  • Remote Desktop and Intel processors

Does Remote Desktop work well on Intel processors working as a VNC server? I do not see a Universal icon on the Remote Desktop website so this would run through Rosetta if I am correct.
    Dual 2.7 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not exactly clear on what you're asking here so...
The client software installed on the Intel based CPU's will allow you to log in and control/observe the Intel based client just fine. Simply turn it on and configure as you would a PPC based machine.
If you want to use the Intel based CPU as an admin (to control/observe FROM), you will need to use the Rosetta hack described in other threads.

My iphone 4s will not snyc on my mac at home; I'm running 10.4.11 and do not have the intel processor; on my work computer  my iphone is recognized as a device in itunes, but my music library can only be located on my older mac at home.

The iPhone REQUIRES OS X 10.5.8 or higher. This is clearly stated in the documentation and on the web site. There is no magic that will make it work with 10.4.x.
