2006-007 security update breaks 8192-bit certificates: certtool X509Anchors

Installing the 2006-007 security update has caused Keychain Access and certtool to be unable to use my 8192-bit certificates. This issue hit me severely as it has impacted my entire OS/X Server SSL configuration, including Open Directory and Server Admin.
I have OS/X 10.4.8 clients connected to a 10.4.8 server. All of my server certificates -- including Mail, Open Directory, Apache, and iChat -- are verified by a self-signed X.509 CA certificate with an 8192-bit key.
Now, suddenly, Keychain Access and certtool barf all over the 8192-bit key. In my X509Anchors, the certificate data is now listed as invalid ("Unable to display this certificate"):
CSSMCLCertGetAllFields: CSPINVALID_ATTR_KEYLENGTH
OpenSSL 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 find it to be a valid certificate, and other applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc) have no problems.
Not only do Mail and Safari fail to function, I can no longer access the OS/X Server Admin. I now receive the error, "There is no server available at the address you entered. All services failed to access the address you provided for <server>. Check the address and try to log on again or contact your network administrator."
Some server certs have 4096- or 2048-bit keys. Certificates with 4096-bit keys or less are not a problem, but they all tie back to the 8192-bit CA cert.
Recreating and distributing new certs and chains to all client machines would be an administrative nightmare, and I'm not sure that I can change the Server certs and keys without access to Server Admin, anyway.
This is a huge problem, and I am stuck in the water. If anyone knows of a solution, or can get a response from Apple, please post it here!
Thanks,
dkallan
G5 Quad, G5 Dual, G4 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   OS/X Server 10.4.8 with 2006-007 security update

Update: since I never found a fix, I ultimately and reulctantly created new 4096-bit keys for everything, all the way back to a new CA cert. Has anyone had success with 8192-bit keys since the 2006-007 security update?

  • Feb security update breaks Java 1.5 (again)?

OK so after running the most recent 10.6 security update, it seems that the trusty workaround for Java 1.5 ( described here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11244910#11244910 ) doesn't work any longer.
Here is the error I'm getting:
java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Bad version number in .class file
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.findBootstrapClass(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.findBootstrapClass0(ClassLoader.java:946)

    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:251)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:374)
The application I'm trying to run used to work under the workaround linked above, which is to install the 10.5 Leopard Java 1.5 and use symlinks.
This doesn't make any sense to me - if I'm using the same Java 1.5 install that worked before why am I getting a class version error?

That is probably because Java 1.5 is not even utilized by 10.6.   You are lucky you had it running this long.  See this article on where Java standards are under 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7:

  • NEW SECURITY UPDATE BREAKS MAIL

Everything is set as it was before. None of my popmail accounts can connect, getting the error:
"The server returned the error: The attempt to read data from the server “pop.embarqmail.com” failed."
Tried changing the authentication to one account to ALL the various choices, no change.
Tried re-entering the password; no change.
Is this Apple's idea of forcing snow leopard folks to upgrade?
    I need reliable e-mail.

Fixed. From my backup, I reinstalled mail, mail preferences, and the entire mail folder in users/mail.
Whatever the "security" update did to my mail, it's now FIXED.
I had no desire to roll back the entire update.
If future updates screw up mail again, I'll always have working backups to restore.

  • IMac G3 goofy after 2006-004 security update

I originally posted this in the Safari forum and was re-directed here. After the latest security update, Safari acts very strange. Some pages open but most don't. I can only get to this discussion page by way of a link in an earlier email. www.foxnews.com works fine as does ebay.com. When I type in other addresses (including Google.com) I get a message that says "Safari can't open the page. The error was: "bad server response" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011). Report the bug to Apple"...which I did. Several other weird things are happening---When I restart, I get a black rectangle inside the blue background as the system loads. Also my clock re-set to 12/31/69. My trash icon on the dock has disappeared, and 2 different printers refuse to print. The printers actually start and make a noise and even thread the paper through, but no printing is on the paper.
I have repaired permissions, zapped the pram, unplugged and restarted, removed some preferences like com.apple.safari.plist. I don't know what else to try.

    Hello again Barb,
Glad to see you took my suggestion & posted here. Here are my thoughts.
Do you have any logs in the Console like this below ?
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunesHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/iT unesHelper malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 13 can't byte swap it)
•Do you have itunes in Account/Start up items if yes use the minus[-] to remove it from Start ups.
•Then go to Application folder/iTunes -> ( actions menu) Show package Contents/Resources/iTunes Helper move this to the desktop.
Next Go to HD->Library->Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
•So, just go to the Receipts folder, open it, go to list mode, find the iTune.pkg files, and put into your trash (but don't empty until you've made sure all this works for you) any iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT the ones mentioned above. You do need the iTunes.pkg files mentioned above, but you do not need the ones in your trash.
(NOTE. DO NOT remove any other files except the iTunes.pkg files mentioned.) None of this will affect your music library or music.
Then do a restart & run permissions repair.
The other issue you do not mention is Norton did you uninstall it ?
Which Norton do you use, you did not repy to that.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2730248&#2730248
Look at macjack's post for the Unistaller.
Backup your files if you have not done so already. If the worse happens at least it will not be a disaster. Any q's please ask.

  • May 1 security update: Breaks Yahoo games access - Can I uninstall?

    Hi there
I clicked on the link to install the latest security update. I have an Intel iMac duo core running 10.4.9.
When I try to log in to a Yahoo games room, I get a message:
    Unable to authenticate userid
I have tried clearing caches and used "Cocktail."
I have tried reboots and shutdowns.
I have tried using Safari, Firefox, and Opera.
I am not an expert! I'd like to back out the update if
    a. It's possible to do so
    b. Someone can explain it clearly
    Thanks

    Hello sioux:
There is no way to "back out" an update. For future reference, I suggest you have a good backup/retreat strategy. I make bootable clones of my iMacs on an external firewire drive using a little program called SuperDuper ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com).
I would, I think, clear the cookies that pertain to Yahoo and see if that clears up your situation.

  • Installed Security Update - Breaks Terminal

    G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)
I installed some OSX security updates last night. My terminal now doesn't respond to commands. e.g. ls
I think it's the path setting that got wiped out. How to I fix this in bash?

Yep, the path is screwed up.
Do you configure anything else in your .profile?
    If not try this:
    /bin/mv .profile profile.old
    /bin/echo "export PATH=\"$PATH:/Applications/DevelopmentApps/arduino-0008/tools/avr/bin\"" > .profile
Or your .profile will have to be configured with a text editor by deleting your path entry then add this line
    export PATH="$PATH:/Applications/DevelopmentApps/arduino-0008/tools/avr/bin"

  • Security update breaks kerberos

I use kerberos as a Fermilab user to connect by ssh. Since installing the security update today, it no longer works. Any ideas?

Turns out Fermilab uses and old version of ssh, so to
be compatible and allow kerberos you have to use the
pre update ssh (3.8) instead of 4.2, this is a kluge
but waiting for Fermilab to upgrade to 4.2 is not
    much of an option either
I had the same suspect, now I've found someone else with the same problem here at Fermi. But I wasn't sure and I spent about 4 hours trying to troubleshoot ssh, lurking mailing list and forums and finally reading your message
Thanks for the hint, I'm going to downgrade ssh.

  • 2008.007 Security Update Will Not Boot - 2 different MacBooks

I installed the 2008.007 update on a 15" first gen MacBook Pro and an 11 month old 17" Santa Rosa 2.4ghz MacBook Pro today.
Both rebooted successfully the first time and we could login but on a reboot or second user login we got a peculiar blank blue screen with the circular 'wait' icon (you know, the animated segmented circle) appearing every seven seconds or so along with a responsive cursor and then disappearing for 4-5 seconds before repeating the cycle.
Have booted each up in target mode & repaired disk, used the install DVD and repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM, etc. all with no effect.
Examining system.log in single user or target modes (which both work fine) shows this message which is very concerning:

What next? I do not want to do yet another install. I feel like I'm back in the late 90s, marvelling at Windows 95 and gradually doing re-installs more and more frequently. I'm up to 3-4 a year so far.
Please help. If you point me to one of the standard Apple 'what to do if you have problems', please don't bother, I've done all that. Both systems were fully patched and fully functioning before application, reboot was not interrupted, repairs were applied pre-update, etc. etc. etc.

  • Security Update Breaks Oracle

I have been using Oracle 10g XE for over 3 years with no problems. My IT department recently updated some security software on the computer and now Oracle doesn't work. Or at least it doesn't communicate. I can access the DB using the SQL*Plus command window, but anything that relies on a browser window is non-functional. The database homepage is browser-based, so it won't function (browser goes into permanent wait state trying to open the home page). My primary job is developing ColdFusion apps, but these won't connect either (CF traps the timeout and reports an error). I have other apps that use SQL Server, and those are not affected, so I know that IIS is actually communicating, just not with Oracle.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled 10g to no avail. I also tried installing 11g but got the same result. Most of the threads I've read on various message boards point to firewall issues. I've added firewall exceptions for ports 1521 and 8080 (and even 1066 because netsh indicates that Oracle is looking at that port). No luck. I've turned the firewall off, again with no effect.
At this point I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?

This is not an Oracle issue. I'd recommend you talk to whoever updated systems you don't even name and tell them to fix what they broke.

  • Please Help - 2006-007 - Can't Install Office -Archive & Install?

Did the new security update; then went to upgrade from Office X to Office 2004. Everything works but Entourage - it won't even launch.
Hours with Micro s**t on the phone and they have no idea.
Should I revert back to my pre 2006-007 version with my SuperDuper clone (all data is current) to 10.8.4 from an extenal hard disk to my Mac and try installing Office 2004,
    OR
Should I do an Archive & Install, upgrade to 10.4.8, not do the 2006-007 security update, and try getting Office 2004 to load Entourage that way?
(Never had to do a reverse clone to my Mac - scared - will it work?).
    Thanks!
iMac CDRW   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'd like to give an update and ask for any additional help.
I tried to install Office 2004, after the 2006-007 Security Update by using the Setup Assistant and by drag and drop; tried that in normal mode and in a safe boot (to make sure everything was essentially shut down). I have no login items active. Word, Excel, Powerpoint all loaded perfectly on each occasion (10 attemps so far). Only Entourage will not load - although Entourage is present in the Microsft Office 2004 folder and everything appears in Home>Documents>Microsft User Data.
Then I did a SuperDuper clone back from my external to the iMac G4, went to OS 10.4.8 before the update, and tried installation both through Setup Assistant and by drag and drop - still to no avail. I did not try Safe Boot after regressing back to the pre 2006-007 state (ran out of time).
In all instances, both before and after the SuperDuper retrograde, Word, Excel, Powerpoint all loaded perfectly. Only Entourage won't launch. The Entourage icon on the dock will bounce about ten times, but launch fails. One time I actually got the black arrow to appear under the icon on the dock, but then it went away (that was after Safe Boot with the 2006-007 Security Update installed).
I tried the install on another G4 with the Security Update installed, and Entourage fussed a bit but did load and is now working properly. So, I went back to the iMac, ran Disk Utility off the install disc - all came up fine; permissions were repaired repeatedly during this process and not one time did anything need repair. I used Onyx and cleaned the cashes, obsolete items and so forth, and ran all 3 scripts. Still no launch of Entourage. I used Onyx andPreferential Treatment and all prefernces checked out perfectly.
Is there something in the system that causes apps to launch that might need fixing, and if so, why only this one app? If so, what and how would I test its integrity? (Entourage in Office X works perfectly on the afflicted iMac G4).
Any suggestsions of something I might be overlooking?
I hate the thought of an Archive and Install just to find out if it will make one silly application load from an install disc.
I can't read Console logs, but there is stuff there about Entourage failing. Would a post of those help someone help me?
    Thanks and Cheers!

  • Startup fails after Security Update 2006-007

My eMac hangs at the initial gray startup screen. All I did was to allow Software Update to install Security Update 2006-007. I have waited as long as 60+ minutes, hoping some process would time out - but this is not the case.
My particulars: G4 eMac, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb drive with 15Gb free, 10.3.9 OS X Server (only supports a wireless classroom of 20 ibooks).
    Troubleshooting I have done:
    * Booted off of Mac OS X install disc. From Disk Utility, repaired permissions (minor fixes) and repaired hard drive (no errors at all).
    * Booted into command-V mode. Hangs after only 7 lines. The last line: "BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2"
Is there any way to undo a Security Update from the Terminal window? I really don't want to do an 'install & archive', with all my user accounts, etc. I have a firewire backup, but as of last week when I got a CCC error it is no longer bootable. I am a high school teacher who knows a bit, but never enough

I seems I'm not the only one experiencing start up problems after the 2006-2007 security update. G-4 Power PC, 466MHZ running OSX 10.3.9
My problems are exasperated by the fact that there was a power outage exactly the same time I did the security update. Now my start up screen goes no further than the whitescreem with the blue bar. IT comes to within 1/4" or 1/16" of the end and stops.
    What I've tried:
booted from OSx 10.3.9 Install disk, used disk utilities, Disk First Aid, no major problems found.
    Still sticks on start.
Started from Disk Warrior and ran repair no problems. Still sticks on start.
Tried to Safe Boot, with no success.
Zapped the PRAM 4 times. No success.
Tried to start from OSX install disk then bring up my backup disk drive from start up manager. Able to bring up back up, but same problem on start up as built in disk drive. Now I don't know how to unmount the backup disk drive without damage. THIS IS MY MAIN CONCERN AT THIS POINT. IF I LOSE THE BACKUP I'M FRIED!
Please help, I don't know when we will have another power outage and my UPS backup power seems to be compromised also.
    Thanks

  • Security Update 2006-001 Killed network preferences

After upgrading with the 2006-001 Security Update, none of my network preferences will set up correctly anymore. DHCP doesn't seem to be doing anything, and when I tell it to use a manual address via the system preferences, it appears that it's not actually doing anything. Mac OS System Preferences will not even detect that I have an ethernet cable plugged in, though if I use ifconfig and route I can get a LITTLE bit of traffic to go out, so I know it's connected and working.
Any one have any ideas on this? Absolutely frustrating because I can no longer work until this is fixed (sitting in an internet cafe trying to figure out what the problem is). I'm running 10.3.9 on a 1.2Ghz 12" Powerbook. I don't remember my Unix days well enough to try to manually set up routes and our DNS settings, nor do I know if the appropriate tools are in Mac OS, but the Apple network preferences are clearly busted.
Is there anyway to uninstall an update?

    12" 1.2 Ghz PB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I had the same Network & Airport issue after installing Security Update 2006-001 on my wife's iBook G3 running 10.3.9 Trying to access our Airport base station wirelessly would inevitably hang as I selected the Airport network.
I noticed that every time I shut down the computer there was a brief showing of the keychain window asking to allow keychain access...this right as the computer went down (no chance to hit the allow button).
Spent the better part of an entire afternoon trying to fix this problem. Then read all the posts here (amazing how many people have problems with this update). Tried to reset permissions - didn't work. In the end, I rebooted the Airport...went into the Airport Admin Utility with my PowerBook to fiddle around...removed our Airport network from the keychain in my wife's iBook...explored other aspects via the keychain access utility.
None of that seemed to work. I also figure I reset the permissions about half a dozen times (with subsequent reboot). None of that was working either...until after one permissions reset & reboot things came good. I got the keychain window, allowed access, and hey presto...online. So far it's been OK for over 12 hours (including after reboot).
    What exactly worked? I don't know. "It's a mystery".
One thing's for sure...this update is not going on any of my other machines!
Come on Apple...surely you can do better than send us automatic updates that break our computers and sap our time!

  • Sync fails after security update applied (2008-007)

I installed the latest security update (2008-007) and now when I try to sync my iPod Touch I get a message that the server disconnected unexpectedly. I have my library on an NFS mounted drive from another Mac. Both have the update installed and I can watch videos, listen to music... so the connection is there, it just won't sync properly.
    Thanks

  • Security Update 2007-009 breaks Rosetta?

I installed Security Update 2007-009 (10.5.1) two days ago.
Since then not a single PPC application works.
    I get:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000024.
This means that I can no longer use Office 2004 for Mac.
I am assuming that the security update breaks Rosetta since I noticed that only PPC applications are fubar.
    Anyone with similar experience?

sorry but you obviously have another problem - just read your post and tried several Rosetta Apps including :
    MsOffice Vx
and Corel photopaint 11 (which I deliberately chose because it has always been a touch wobbly)
Both run fine - and my machine is fully patched. So perhaps the post title could be slightly misleading - maybe it should have a question mark because in my experience it isn't a fact. It's a theory which actually turns out to have been incorrect.
One thing I do know is that rosetta is VERY memory intensive. Mine was always a bit wobbly until I put extra memory in the machine but since Leopard it has actually been a lot lot better than it was with Tiger - which is great.

  • System preferences shot after Security Update 2006-008 - no sound any more

All sorts of strange problems after running the 2006-008 security update, yet only affecting one my two MacMini:
System Preferences completely "shot", with the Date&Time item/icon looking very odd.
The little flag for language/keyboard setting and date/time did not show any more in the top menu bar -- basically everything left side of the blue Spotlight magnifying glass icon was gone.
Also Safari much more prone to quit.
Managed to delete some prefs and cached stuff and to replace the System Preferences application with the one from the other (working ok) Mac.
(I wish such components were available on the web!)
However: Currently I get no sound whatsoever. When I check the option to have the little speaker symbol displayed in the menu bar it shows. But as soon as I click it once, it vanishes from the menu bar.
In the Sound window, I have Volume set to full, yet everything is greyed out, "Sound off" is checked without my doing, while "Display sound volume in the menu bar" unchecks itself everytime(!)
And, very odd: While resetting PRAM and the fsck-routine working ok (no problems found) and disk utility claiming to have repaired all permissions, I can not run a reset of Open Firmware/nvram with the O-F-Apple-Alt key combination (I'm using an original Apple USB Keyboard for this, since I'm aware that my 3rd party keyboards from Logitech and Microsoft often refuse to perform such kind of "low level" tasks).

while it is widely known that the folks from redmond do release software before all the bugs are removed, i was not aware before that apple is following the same approach: using their customers as guinea pigs when it comes to updates. there is plenty of reports on MacFixIt about all sorts of troubles with previous apple os updates.
