2006 Macbook occasionally freezes upon wake up. OSX Lion

Macbook 2006 occasionally freezes upon waking up from sleep (lid-down). - screen displays desktop but keypad/trackpad don't work. I have to forcefully power down and then upon re-boot, it will work.
This problem has surfaced since I installed LION.... any ideas people?

Geds,
Please start a new topic thread.  I can only help one person per thread.
Lion will install on any Core2Duo Mac with 2 GB of RAM.  But issues with freezing if they are present before installation of an operating system will be present after.   Operating system updates do not fix freezing issues.  They are either hardware issues, driver issues, or disk too full issues.  For that reason you need to start your own thread so the possible issues may be isolated.

  • MacBook Air freezing upon wake from sleep

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

    Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk

My MacBook Air occasionally freezes since I upgrade to Lion

I'm not sure it is the correct terminology. You turn off your MBA and turn it back on, as soon as you hear the sound you press shift for a few seconds and your MBA will "restart".

  • Macbook pro running annoyingly slow on OSX Lion

    hi,
i'm having a bit of trouble running osx Lion, ever since i've installed my macbook pro (2.8 Ghz Core i7 with 8 Gb of ram) has started stuttering. running absolutly nothing but one single application (being lightroom, quicktime, itunes or any other app) every few seconds my mac tends to stop for up to a minute to do ...something... it shows the beachball icon and the resumes normal duty just to continue on it's annoying course several seconds later.
i have tried resseting my SMC, i have reinstalled lion with a complete clean install (with and without installing snow leopard bfore installing) and manually replacing all backups from time machine instead of restoring. a reboot doesnt seem to do anything except for take several minutes more than i'm used to.
i have tried booting in safe mode using the shift key.
so. looking at my activity monitor, the cpu usage doesn't seem to jump up at all when a "stutter" occurs. i have however noticed a VM size of near 200 GB after reboot (windows are not reopened on boot) wich seems ...excessive
so i'm at a loss.. lion has some pretty nice features, but at this rate i will be reinstalling my previous version of OSX.
is there anyone that might be able to help me out here?
    thanks in advance,
    sincerly
    Paul Thijssen

    Hi,
I also have this problem. My MacBook pro was brand new in august, but i bought it just a few days before the release of lion so i installed lion after i bought it. Only used it 1 day with whatever was on it before and seemed to work fine.
Ive been too busy to do anything about it but im very annoyed by how slow it is so i have to do something now, what can I do? can someone help with some specific steps? someone posted something about changing the network settings but I wasnt sure if that applied in europe (spain)... any guideance in non-technical terms please?
    THANK YOUUU

  • Why does my MacBook Pro retina running 10.8.2 freeze upon wake?

This has happened at least twice: upon being awakened, the backlight of my MBP retina is on (the Apple logo is visible, but nothing is displayed on the LCD), the cursor is spinning but won't move, and touching the keyboard keys results in a system beep. The only solution is to hold down the keyboard power button.
Other freezes are occurring as well. There's no apparent disk directory damage as of yet (according to Disk Utility). I've ran Apple Hardware Test in loop mode just now (60 times), but it found nothing. Also has my local Apple Store run diagnostics overnight a few weeks ago, and nothing was found.
The only other variable I can think of is that once a day, I disconnect the MBP-r from a 27" Apple Cinema Display (display port model, not Thunderbolt) before going to work and reconnect it when returning home. Today the freeze happened when I reconnected the MBP, but the first freeze happened while at work.
Since I know that some are using Mountain Lion trouble-free (even MBP-r models), could these freezes the result of an interaction between hardware and software (i.e. a bug), or is are they the result of a problem with my user account?

    Hello:
If your computer is in warranty, I would take it into an Apple store for diagnosis.  What you describe should not happen.

  • Macbook occasionally fails to wake from sleep

i have a new macbook (purchsed in july) which occasionally (every 1-2 weeks) fails to wake from sleep. it either hangs on the blue screen which first comes up when you switch it on, or on the black screen which normally follows shortly afterwards.
i regularly use it "closed", i.e., with an external screen and keyboard, but the problem seems also to happen occasionally when i switch it on without these peripherals.
    any ideas?
i've also had dvd player crash once. it was in full screen mode, and i couldn't switch to any other applications or force quit dvd player, so again i had to cut power.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Having similar issues...not that it happens everyday ...it's very infrequent..but yeah im in the same boat..
As far as the computer being hot...
    Go to :
    System Preference--->Energy Savings
From there you should have the boxed check both on Battery power and AC Cord to put the Hard drive to sleep when possible..
Once i did this it never happened again(the closing of the lid and still running)
as far as the other issue??Help.!!Anyone?

  • Macbook Pro Freezes after wake up from sleep

My Macbook Pro 5,5 with mountian Lion freezes after waking up from sleep. i have 8 GB RAM and did a hardware test wich was passed. I also have a SSD of 240 GB in the optical drive. this is my startup drive. Another HD is my workdrive. The first thing I see is that the Airport does not come back and it seems that is does not wake up. After that the whole finder freezes.
    What can be the problem?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • April 2006 MacBook Pro freezing up

    Hi everyone!
The MacBook Pro I bought in April 2006 (has CoreDuo 1.83 ghz) has started freezing up, particularly during on-line game play (I'm a geek, okay, and I play WOW.) :0) I increased my memory from 512 mb to 1.5 gigs back in January, but did not use Apple memory. Also, despite numerous fan control apps, my MacBook Pro is still really hot to the touch after extended use. Are these two issues related, and if so, what can be done?
Thanks for any ideas anyone has!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The 'freezing up' could be heat related, memory related or storage capacity related (at a guess)
Heat: Run the Hardware Tests from Install DVD1 (hold d at start) and see if it reports any MTR (fan motor) or SNS (heat sensor) errors ?
Memory: This is also tested when you run the above but a better check is <a href=http://www.memtestosx.org/">memtest (small charge for the download)
Storage: How much free space left on the drive? When did you last run the 'chron' jobs to clear caches etc?

  • Anyone else seeing a peculiar type of freeze upon wake?

I'm wondering whether other people are experiencing the following problem:
    1. Occurs almost always after working from home with an Apple 20" Cinema Display as sole display (connected via wired ethernet) and then waking from sleep with no peripherals connected, using the built-in display and connected to a different network (wirelessly or wired).
    2. EITHER UI/Screen (including menu clock) do not update and are "frozen" at last screen displayed before sleep OR backlight does not come on at all
    3. Remote login via ssh is possible .
    4. Nothing unusual in Console or System logs
    5. Sole workaround is "sudo reboot" from remote login session (or a forced reboot via power key).
I've tried trashing network prefs, an archive and install, run Disk Warrior 4, checked permissions, etc. Had my hardware tested via Apple Hardware Test overnight at an Apple Store several months ago. I've done it all (I think).
I've been experiencing this problem since Tiger! (grrr...)

I'm getting this problem with my MacBook. But no external display. It seems to be somewhat random. Most of the time, it wakes just fine. But every once in a while it hangs with the exact same symptoms that you describe.
I'm on 10.5.5, so that didn't fix anything.
I did see this in my console, don't know if it helps:
    10/23/08 5:34:54 PM fseventsd[47] callback_client: ERROR: d2fcallbackrpc() => (ipc/send) timed out (268435460) for pid 253
    10/23/08 5:34:55 PM fseventsd[47] client: 0x805e00 : USER DROPPED EVENTS!
Repeated over and over and over and over until I killed the power.

  • MacBook Pro Freezes during Wake

My MBP 13" (Late 2009) freezes when I wake it form sleep.
However, the freezing does not occur when I'm using the computer and another odd factor is the fact that I get these weird blue/red horizontal and vertical lines around my windows.
I took a picture when I wake my computer and it prompts for the password. I have arrows pointing to these weird lines. I'm not sure whats wrong, I checked my RAM (I tested it) and the test passed; so my assumption that RAM was the problem was wrong.

Here is a kernal log: http://pastebin.com/DfXMpnLC
I believe this is from the time I opened the lid and at the end where I had to do a hard reboot.
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me out here.
    Thanks,
    Alec

Thanks for such a speedy response.
My warranty is unfortunately done, so I'd rather not pay something around like $800 to fix it, I'd rather get a new 15" even though this is a 2009 model. But I don't want to just throw this laptop away, so I just want to put some effort. I've been speaking to a Tier 3 Tech Support guy, the I called couple days about the issue and after I recieved a call back it was done, not only dad but I also dropped it that same week, so I have a dent on my CD Drive. And when I didn't have a dent on the CD Drive, I took it to the genius bar and they said I had dropped something on my computer because on the corner of the screen had a wedge, no dent. It looked like a manufacturer fault however you know how the GB people are.
The weird thing is, this problem when I first bought the computer never happened. So I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue, of course I can't be so sure. I don't think I have access to the hardware tests too.

  • MacBook Pro freezes upon opening iTunes.

The probably has a very specific pattern on my computer, and I am hoping others have had this problem and know how to fix it. When I open iTunes the icon bounces and then stops. My whole computer freezes and I can't use the cursor. I use the command/alt/esc buttons to force quit. Once I quit the computer works perfectly...the weird thing is that immediately after going through that 5 minute process, I can open iTunes easily with no problems. The other thing is if I leave iTunes open and close my laptop, when I open it back up it is frozen again.
PLEASE HELP. It is such an inconvenience.

It turns out after all this WAS my problem. I was unsatisfied with my first visit to the Apple store, and since my stuff wasn't all backed up there was nothing I could do at that point. After I did back up my stuff, I restored to factory settings, which didn't solve anything. Still crashing. Went back to Apple store with printout of Macbook Pro 2010 model GPU failure extended warranty and when they checked my computer it turned out that WAS the issue. This is my first night back with it, but they said it passed the video check a couple times, so we'll see.
In the end, the $300 service (which did seem inexpensive with all things considered) ended up being free of charge. I am happy.

  • Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro Freezing since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Hey all,
I've been researching this issue extensively and it seems as if it would be most efficient if I started my own post instead of cluttering someone else's.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion within a week of its release. In the past two weeks, my computer has crashed 3 to 4 times. I can still move my mouse, and if I have an app like Spotify open it will continue to play music through the speakers. However, the computer is frozen and I cannot type/click/control the computer. The only way to get it back is by pressing and holding down the power key and rebooting.
Called AppleCare and went to the "Genius" Bar multiple times; neither helped.
I ran EtreCheck on my computer and below are my results:

  • InDesign CS5.5 freezing upon opening new document Lion 10.7.3?

    Hi there,
When launching CS5.5 InDesign, I select 'New document'. After it is setup (1-2 seconds), it freezes and InDesign is non functional and you have to force quit.
    My console log states:
CFURLCreateWithBytes was passed these invalid URLBytes: ‘/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5.5/Adobe InDesign CS5.5.app/Contents/Frameworks’ (a file system path instead of an URL string). The URL created will not work with most file URL functions. CFURLCreateFromFileSystemRepresentation should be used instead.
The freeze occurs in the admin account and logged in domain user.
I have tried updating InDesign- nothing.
Uninstalling through Adobe uninstaller and reinstalling- nothing.
Not using plugins. We are using Extensis Universal Type Client but I wuit it and turned off the Core to see if that helps- nothing.
    Ive repair permissions- nothing
    Rebooted- nothing
I ended up upgrading to CS6 and had no problems. I would like to resolve this CS5.5 issue though. Any help?

I copied Mac OS: [Startup Disk]/Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/Mark II/Datastore to the desktop and deleted it from that directory. Did the same for the Mark II folder (Solution 2)
-Failing that the first time, I uninstall/reinstall and didnt bother to update, which is why you see the original InDesign. I'll try and update InDesign and move to 10.7.4 to see if that does anything. My
Mac OS: [Startup Disk]/Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/Mark II/Datastore does not currently have these folders because I took them out. Maybe I'll run the crash report again and post it. I have to wait for the designer to finish for the day. I'll update possibly tomorrow.
    Thank you!

  • Mac Pro Freezing upon wakeup

I installed SL on both my Macbook Pro and my Mac Pro desktop. No problems with the laptop but the desktop is freezing upon wake up. If you click on items on the dock they bounce forever and my wheel pointer spins continuously. Computer doesn't come back and needs a hard shutdown.
Any ideas how to fix this only upon startup from sleep? The Mac Pro is about a month old.

The problem continues to plague me. I'm almost positive it's connected to the external drives both USB. One just regular WD mybook USB drive. The other is my time machine backup. After I unplugged the WD drive computer performed a little better but as soon as it accessed the time machine drive started freezing again. I reformatted the time machine drive and am hoping that solves the problem but have not have a chance to check it. Overall not very impressed with this install. The Macbook pro that's 3 yrs old is fairing okay. But Mac pro that was only a month old now seems to be plagued with problems. I've never had this much trouble with a MAC OS upgrade. Would be one thing if this was my only problem but spaces is acting up and WoW is crashing now because of the upgrade too.
