2006 MacPro / Lion upgrade = Yes? No?

According to the Lion (10.8) upgrade specs, my MacPro 2006 can not be upgraded. I'm astounded by that. Anyone with a pre-2008 MacPro try the Lion upgrade yet? I can't imagine there are technical limitations to this, sounds more like a marketing ploy to force hardware upgrades.....

you mean Mountain Lion, 10.8. Lion is 10.7 and can be installed.
About daily some new thread appears asking. 32-bit system and graphics due to 7 yr old EFI32 and no legacy boot, only 64-bit mode for ML.

  • IMac 27" with Lion upgrade ... daily hangs! Need help and support

    Dear Apple,
Mid-July we got an iMac27" with Snow Leopard installed. First week of August I upgraded to Lion via web download (from Apple Store).
Since then the iMac has frequently hung. It goes in two stages: 1) the cursor gets round with rolling colors for some time (the "force quit" or "shutdown" menu selections cannot be accessed because the mouse gets inactive for clicks), then 2) the cursor gets in the middle of the screen and resembles the gray round that rotates when the iMac starts up (but without the gray apple above it this time) ... it stays in that mode indefintely. I then have to shut it down via the back lower left button and start again. Now it goes into that "routine" almost daily.
All softwares are up-to-date. I have also performed three of four times now the "Alt at start" manoeuvre, check disk and permissions with repair.
Is it because of the Lion upgrade (instead of a fresh install)? (If so, how do I perform a fresh install and keep all settings/preferences.) Is it hardware-related ... although it looks like working quite good? Is it software-related ... how to clean everything?
In case such issue has not yet come up I will need to call the Apple help center. Can a phone number be provided? Thanks.
    Regards.
    Pierre

Your situation sounds identical to mine. But, with a 27" 2010 iMac and a 2009 Mac pro. Constant freezes, hangs, programs not quiting, unable to restart , shutdown.
I did a full re-install of Lion on both the iMac and Mac pro, including a full initialization of he disk, and, instead of migrating all my apps and data from time capsule, I individually re-installed each app.
    Nada!..same problem..
On this past Monday, I reformatted my Macpro and re-installd Snow Leopard - it works perfect now!
Lion has got to be the worst product Apple has ever released. I have no idea why it works on so many Macs, when it seems to be so bad on many as well.

  • Can't login after Mountain Lion upgrade (Network accounts are unavailable)

I performed a Mountain Lion upgrade on a 2011 MBP running Lion this weekend. The Mac may have been set up to connect to an AD server with my user account, but I thought I had disabled that months ago... aparently not. I performed the upgrade at home not on the corporate network.
On first bootup after the Mountain Lion upgrade I'm stuck at the login screen unable to login with my local account or the admin account. I get the "red dot" next to the username field with the "Network accounts are unavailable" pop up. I'm plugged in to the ethernet network at work now... no luck.
I tried booting into the repair disk and repairing disk permissions. Still no luck.
Any ideas? I'd happily do a fresh install but I need to get a handful of files off the machine first.

No worries with the basic questions... it's important to cover all the bases. Thanks so much for the input.
    - I'm trying to log in with the same username I would use to ssh in... so yes.
    - I don't know if the account was a mobile account. The Mac was given to me configured about a year ago, configured to be on the domain. I since have used it on and off many networks without considering it was set up to be on a domain.
    - Never had a problem logging into the machine before the mountain lion install, although to be honest it was very very rarely ever rebooted.
    - I've plugged it into ethernet and let it sit for quite some time. It's still telling me Network accounts are unavailable and I'm unable to login with my personal or admin account.

  • I just purchased a new MacPro to replace my existing 2006 MacPro which cannot be undated with the new operating system.  My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro or 2)

I just purchased a new MacPro 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor to replace my existing 2006 MacPro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon because it cannot be undated with the new Lion operating system.
My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files to the new computer.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro, set it as the startup drive, and update its10.7  operating system or 2) or use the migration program.
I'm concerned that simply installing the existing 2TB HD, I may have issues with it not recognising some infromation written for the old 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon.

your new system runs 10.6.8 just fine as has been said and stated many times.
    I would clone it first.
I would even clone the original system it has.
And if you have or want to use Lion and then Mountain Lion, fine - I would still keep backups of every OS.
I am not a fan of putting the OS and Apps plus all the data all on one drive. I like to keep them separate.
Whatever OS, rerun the last combo update is all and any other updates.
And by "new Lion" I assume you don't mean 10.7 but "Moutain" 10.8.  Part of me says keep Lion and SL around, and test and try out ML with your apps and other hardware you may have. After too many years, waiting for 10.8.1 - and give everyone time to update their apps and retest.

  • Lion upgrade changed my User Directory (Name Name 1) Help!

Can any one offer a fix.
I tried to install Te Lion Upgrade and it stalled at the last step.
After waiting 4 hours I did a restart and Lion asked me if I want to restore from an archive.
I said yes, but my user group was renamed from Jimmy to Jimmy 1
Most things work and it seems everything is there, bit some apps are not working because they are looking for the Jimmy folder (path).
Is there anyway I can change this back to the way it was (Jimmy)?
Can I rename the folder in terminal or make a new folder - and what will happen with my username (which wasn't changed) and everything in the keychain? No to mention permissions.
Can anyone point me into the right direction or have step on how to solve this?
    Much appreciated.

I have a similar problem - I need to change my account (short) name so that I can backup both my old computer and new computer on timecapsue independently.  However, the link you provided is only for 10.6 and earlier, not for Lion.  Are the instructions for Lion similar?  For one, I have no directory utility on Lion.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Re-use Snow Leopard disk after Lion upgrade?

I upgraded from OSX 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard (single license) on one of my two iMacs, and then installed Lion. Is my Snow Leopard disk now liberated to make the pre-Lion upgrade on the second computer, since it is no longer operating on the first one? All of the hardware meets the upgrade requirements.

    Simple answer; yes.
As long it's not being used on more than computer at a time, you're within the terms of the licence.

  • Timestamp became incorrect after Lion upgrade

    What goes wrong:
It seems the timestamp became incorrect after Lion upgrade.
Timemachine backups are date 26th of Januari 2011, while it is November 3rd.
Same goes for folders, files etc.
    System specs:
    MacPro 4-core
    HDD's: 1TB WD Caviar blacks.
Upgrade of WD installed after LION release.
    Any suggestion?

    1) Make sure the system Date & Time is correct, and the location/Time Zone is correct
System Preferences > Date & Time
That will probably not be the problem, but you need to make sure there are no issues there.
    2) Next, open
System Preferences > Languages and Texts > Format pane ...
and reselect a standard Date and Time FORMAT.

  • [App Store bad] How to purchase Lion upgrade software for 1-10 small business users?

I think the App Store is great for non-commercial individual users.  However, I think it is preventing both OS X and iOS adoption in small business since it is much easier to purchase PC software as either physical media or software deownloads and keys that can be distributed to the employee who needs it.
Does anyone have any experience on purchasing multiple OS X Lion upgrades for a company similar to the following?
150 employees, less than 10 OS X users.
IT manager insists on pruchasing and controlling all software deployed on the corporate network.
Employees are *strongly* discouraged or just plain not allowed to expense purchases.
I understand a single Appled ID can not purchase multiple OS X Lion upgrades to deploy on multiple machines.  It seems like the App Store is forcing small business to reimburse each employee for software purchases made through their individual personal Apple ID.  What happens when they leave the company?  This is a strategy that I think will make IT managers and purchasing managers reject adoption of Max OS X.
The only option that seems to satisfy the above is the physical media option of the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive which at $69 per commerical user's machine will exceeds twice the cost of the $29.99 upgrade.
    Thoughts?
    -Ed

Volume licensing requires +20 users so that does not help a small company with a handful of OS X users.
"Volume license contracts and maintenance agreements are available for all Apple products with a minimum quantity of 20 licenses."
For commercial users, you cannot legally install a single $29.99 upgrade on all machines.  Yes, it may be possible but IT managers, even at small business companies, are concerned with what is legal.  I think the App Store is a contributor to additional reasons for keeping OS X out of the small business world.  It complicates the lives of purchasing and IT managers.

  • First gen quad-core MacPro i7 upgrade

Greetings. I have my first gen 2.66 Quad Core for almost two years now and interested to give it a makeover. With the i7 have huge possibility to incorporate onboard t the macPro in MacWorld debute, I am actually thinking about swapping out my two 2.66 due-core and replace them with two 2.66 i7 (currently list price on newegg for about $300 a pop).
And here is my question, from you guys experience with G4 and macPro CPU upgrade, will a general retail CPU compatible with apple EFI?
And after I swap out those old due core, can I build a PC out of it?
Meanwhile, I just have to wait and try really hard not to get a 8800GT for Christmas, since that will more than likely to be refresh to 4870 as well...
    Thanks guys!

You aren't going to outgrow just because something new is around the corner. Wait for it and OS X to mature and catch up to each other and better use what you have like Snow Leopard.
If you had a 4 yr old system, and outgrew it, yes. If you want a 2nd system, I'd still say wait a year.
There are literally new articles and discussions of Core i7 every day as enthusiasts play around, companies try to improve their BIOS code. It is still very very new.
As mentioned earlier in thread, you have to use the same pin-compatible chips. And even if you could, it uses DDR3, the cost, and you'd have to what, sell your top of the line.
It is better to just buy a new system and then sell or keep as backup. And I would not jump on new platform until it has been out for months and a couple OS X updates under the belt as well.
So far I haven't seen any dual cpu motherboards for Nehalem (name Core I7 use to go by) in production.

  • Did anyone else lose all their contacts from address book after the Lion upgrade? ...and how do I get them back?

I seem to have lost all my contacts from my address book after the Lion upgrade.  I am a mobileme user and since it sync's with my MacBook Pro it erased all of by contacts.  How do I retrieve my missing information?

  • Trying to upgrade from snow leopard to lion. Father already purchased Lion online a few months ago but did not use upgrade (did not know cmp was already running on lion). How can I use his upgrade on my computer without having to buy another Lion upgrade?

    Hi,
Basically my computer is running on Snow Leopard. My father bought the Lion upgrade to install on his computer, however, it ended up being that his newly purchased lap top already came running with Lion -- thus, he never ended up using the Lion upgrade he purchased. Now, I would like to use the Lion upgrade he purchased but did not use to upgrade my computer to Snow Leopard. The information he gave me for this was the Web Order Number, Part Number, and Content Code for the Lion upgrade. How do I redeem/use his upgrade to update my computer to Lion without having to purchase another copy of the Lion software from the App store? Is that possible?
    Thank you so much!!!

Unless he controls your machine (same household), you can't. At $30 USD, pop for your own copy.

  • I bought a Mountain Lion upgrade for $20 off the Apple site. I have four other Macs all under the same ID. How can I share the new OS with other computers. Or can I?

I bought a Mountain Lion upgrade for $20 off the Apple site. I have four other Macs all under the same ID. How can I share the new OS with other computers. Or can I?

You can share it with other Macs under your control (not your neighbor's).  You just need to be logged in under the buying AppleID for updates or to download again.

  • Cannot share itunes library between users after Lion upgrade

Before the Lion upgrade, I was able to share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer.  The library is located in HD > Users > Shared.  Both users have read and write access to the folder.  Home sharing is turned on in iTunes from the one user who can open iTunes.

This can be done with ACLs. I use it to share an iTunes library between my and my wife's user accounts.
First go to System Preferences -> Users & Groups, and make a new group. Call the group itunesshare. Add the users you want to the group.
Then, in Terminal, paste in all of this and press return:
    sudo chmod -R +a "itunesshare allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit" \
Then drag the iTunes Library folder into the Terminal window and press return again. Enter the admin password when prompted.
Your iTunes library will then have full read and write permissions for all users in the iTunesshare group. This includes permissions to any items added to the library at any future time.

  • Why is it taking so long to install lion upgrade

why is it taking so long to install lion upgrade? It is about 20 minutes now and still saying wait a few minutes

Because the file is over 5 GBs. If your internet service is slow then it can take a long time - several hours.

  • Scan via Preview no longer working after Lion Upgrade

After upgrading to Lion, I can no longer use Preview to scan a document from my Kodak ESP9.  I have a range of issues, but the most common is that after telling preview to look for networked scanners, and then selecting the Kodak, it open a box that should automatically start a preview scan.  Instead, the box shows the SCAN and OVERVIEW button but nothing else, the screen is jsut blank.
I have updated Kodak's sofware and firmware to Lion versions.
Anyone have an idea how to get this working again?  It was flawless before the Lion upgrade.
    Thanks.
