2006 macpro possibly using imac g5 as monitor

As mentioned I have a 2006 macpro, it has a 5770 graphic card, I also have an old (in great condition) imac g5. I would like to use the g5 as a monitor via a vga connection. Now, the 5770 has a mini display port and the g5 has a display port, okay, I do have a vga for both as well as a vga cable.
I have heard that this is not possible due to incompatibility. I would appreciate any feedback and/or direction
Thanks Gary

Hmmm, my underrstanding of target mode is where one can access/open, computor a's files from computor b. This I understand, is done by connecting either a firewire or, usb cable between the two machines and hitting the T key.
What I am looking to do is, connect machines a/b via a VGA cable thereby possibly allowing one to open video in the other machine.
Are you saying this will not happen?
That being the case, why do we have a display port conection in the back of the imac g5? this is kinda confusing

  • Use imac as second monitor

I understand this can be done in some previous generations, and am just not sure whether it works in my situation.
I have a MacBook Pro (2009) and a brand new iMac 27" (2011). It seems that MBP has a mini displayport and iMac has 2 thunderbolt ports. I am curious whether I can use iMac as second monitor for my MBP. If possible, which cable should I use, a mini displayport-to-mini displayport cable from Belkin or thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt cable from Apple.

You can't except through a product such as ScreenRecycler. The iMac's Thunderbolt port won't accept video from a non-Thunderbolt source.

  • Can I use iMac as a monitor?

Can I use iMac as a monitor to plug my media player to it? That is only turn on the iMac Mon, not the OS X.
    If yes, how?

No. All methods of using the iMac as a display require interaction with the OS installed on it.

  • Possible to use iMac 27" as monitor for PPC Mac Mini (DVI)?

This question appeared on the support community, about 4 years ago, but the adapter mentioned as a solution is now discontinued.

I have an old PPC-based Mac Mini that I would like to connect to my new iMac 27", but my Mac Mini has DVI output and the iMac 27" has Mini DisplayPort input. Is this the only way to connect a PPC Mac Mini (or any DVI device) to the iMac 27"?

I am in the same exact situation, and would appreciate any suggestions!
    Thanks!

Sorry, no the MM is simply too old. Please read Apple's FAQ on Target Display Mode and you will see:

  • Use iMac as secondary monitor for my PC(Windows)

    Hi,
    I have a PC running windows 7 and an iMac 27" i5 running OSX10.6.6.
I'd like to use my iMac as a secondary monitor for my PC (I still need some applications from my windows computer and I dont want to install windows on this beautiful mac).
Is that possible with the _Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter_ on the apple store?
Sorry if it has been asked before, couldn't find it!
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, that adapter will not help you accomplish your goal. It only works in one direction; mini-DisplayPort to DVI to allow you to attach a DVI video device to your iMac, such as a projector or display by the m-DP. You will need either a video card in the PC that provides DisplayPort output, then you can use a DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable, or you will need a converter to switch your PC's DVI output to DisplayPort signal. Those converters run US$150 from 3rd party developers such as Atlona or Kanex and are then restricted to a a maximum 720p resolution.

  • Macbook Pro running Windows with Boot Camp, wanting to use iMac as second monitor.

I am using a Macbook Pro that is running Windows with Boot Camp. I want to connect it to my iMac so that I can use the iMac as a second monitor.
If it is not possible, I also have a TV that I could use using an HDMI, however when I tried this my Macbook Pro running Windows 8.1 did not detect it in the Display Settings.
What are my options? I just want to use my iMac or TV as a second monitor!!
    Any help is appreciated, tMachanks!

  • Audio Issues Using iMac 27 as Monitor, after Yosemite

    Folks,
I use the Mac as an external monitor for my PC. I've been playing music from the Mac on external speakers, in both Mac & PC mode for 4 years. Since Yosemite, when I switch to the PC, the speakers change to the internal built-ins. When I select the external speakers the 'Settings for Selected Device'  says 'The Selected Device has no Output Controls'. It's connected via USB to an Audioengine D1 DAC and 5+ speakers.
Any thoughts? I never had any issues before Yosemite, and there seems to be no way to lock the setting to external.
    Thanks...

Unfortunately the rep in the store was not correct. This feature is called Target Display Mode, Apple discusses it in the Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs & Target Display Mode Mid 2011 iMacs articles. As you will read in the first article you could do this with Mid 2009 & 2010 iMacs but not with 2011 models because they use Thunderbolt. However if you got a new MacBook Pro or MacBook Air which also have Thunderbolt in 2011 then you could use the 2011 iMac as an external monitor to either of those models. In short you need Thunderbolt on all the connected computers.
The good news is there are still 2010 iMac's available in the Apple Refurbished store. If you have never experienced the refurbished store then you not be afraid, these machines have the same 1 year warranty as a new machine and are also eligible for AppleCare. Almost everyone that gets one cannot tell the difference between a new machine and a refurbished machine, they're that good. You can only buy them from Apple's online store, to check what is available check frequently because inventory can and does change from hour to hour.

  • Is it possible use an iMac 21,5" as secondary monitor for windows 7 laptop

    Hello everybody,
Recently (less than one year ago) i bought an iMac 21,5".
Now i would like to use it as secondary monitor for my laptop. (My laptop runs Windows 7).
Is it possible? (I found conflicting opinions on the web, even on the Apple forum).
What type of cable do I need?
(I will appreciate also a link to the product on some online store: preferably apple store, but also amozon, ebay, etc.)
    Thank you in advance.

    SOrry to say, but no.
The 2011 iMacs can only be used as a second display via a Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.
The other way around (from Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort) would work.

  • Using 2006 iMac as a monitor for Mac Book Pro 2012

I want to connect my 2006 17" inch iMac with Mac Boon Pro and use it as extra monitor. Can you please suggest me how to do this and the kind of cables I should buy?

Other than the software listed above, which may or may not meet your expectations, you cannot do it. Your iMac is not capable of video in.

  • How do I connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?

    Hi !
I was wondering if it were possible to  connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?
My older imac is from 2006. The new one is a 2012 imac.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JC

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

  • Using new iMac as a monitor for PC Laptop

    Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.
    M.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

  • Can a PC with a Displayport output use a 27" iMac as a monitor?

    Hi,
I've asked a couple questions in the past week because I'm trying to find a solution for my office. (each one of my ideas unfortunately turns out not to work)
I need a PC for some business things I do, I have an old PC but it works fine for what I need it for.
If I buy a video card that had a displayport output, could I plug it into a new 27" iMac to use it as a monitor?
(My current video card only has a DVI & VGA output, unless an adapter would work with it?)
I really want an iMac, and would rather not use parallels or Vmware or bootcamp (if possible) because I have a lot of data on my PC.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
    Scott

    Ok... Foiled again...
    Thank for the Quick Reply.
Looks like I'm going to have to squeeze two monitors on my desk, (or maybe I'll buy the 21" imac and save some space)
Or maybe I'll buy a nice Dell monitor (with a lot of inputs) and just buy a Macmini (especially if they upgrade to haswell because the graphics are supposed to be much better. (and the mini's don't have dedicated GPU's)
    Thanks again.

  • Use iMac as monitor for PC?

Is it possible to use my iMac as a monitor for a PC?
Also, if I had a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 MAC Elite Mechanical Gaming Keyboard...and I was able to use my iMac as a PC monitor...would the keyboard work when I am operating my the PC?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately its not possible to use your iMac in that way and if it was then you would not be able to plug your keyboard in your Mac and use it with your PC. Sorry

  • Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac

    Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
      http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?

that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection.

  • Using my iMac as a monitor for Mac mini.

I'd like to use my mid 2010 27" iMac as a monitor for my Mac mini. Is this possible with thunderbolt?

You'll use the thunderbolt port on your mini and connect to the mini display port on the iMac. use a mini display to mini display cable.
