2006 model Random Shutdown
Here's some of the details:
My computer was purchased in May 2006. Since then it has crashed twice because of overheating. The power cord has been replaced, CPU fans and the HD x2. I have never had any problems with random shut down except 3 years ago it would shut down immediately after the power cord was disconnected.
A few days ago I noticed that whenever I returned from classes the computer would be shut off. The problem: I never shut it down.
I'm unsure if this is somehow connected or not, but a few years ago the cd burner suddenly quit working and then today I tried uncessfully to eject a dvd. It made the sound to eject, even began to eject the dvd but didn't make it out even 1cm before the computer decided jk, and stole it back.
Now the unit is shutting down while I only have firefox running. I restarted the computer and now the light on the power supply is absent, along with the battery % which is normally present.
I know it's 4 years old but nothing quite like this has happened before.
Also, when the unit shuts down, it is not even remotely hot. I've read several places that the heat sink expands (or maybe it was something else) which then causes a short circuit.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Do you have all of your firmware updates installed? A firmware update is a little different than a regular update. You would get the firmware update via Software Update, but you would have to manually install it after it downloads... going through a process involving holding down the power button when you start it up... and getting some loud beeps. Have you ever done that?
There was a known problem with random shutdowns in those machines related to a faulty heat sensor... the update was basically to ignore the faulty sensor.

White Macbook 2006 random shutdown solved removed cpu heatsink and more
I picked up a cheap macbook from a secondhand retailer for $300 and it regularly shutdown, froze, restarted as well as the grey kernel panic screen completely random no real pattern. I set about trying to solve the problem swapping ram and hard drive with my identical 2006 macbook (which I had similar problems with last year, fixed that one with a new battery connector cable). The ram and hard drive made no difference so I downloaded istat menus to see if any combination of cpu voltage, current and temperature were causing the random shutdowns. It seemed when the temperature reached certain values the computer would shutdown or freeze(around 30 to 50 degrees). I'd read on other forums about faulty cpu temperature diodes so I reapplied heatsink compound to the cpu heatsink and checked all the wiring for shorts but nothing seemed to solve the problem. I was ready to retire the computer and use it for spares for my other macbook when needed but I pulled the keyboard off one more time and tried something completely radical. This fix requires some forward planning and software installation but it has completely solved my Random shutdowns completely.
for instructions see my next post *Fix for random shutdowns white macbook*Ok this is not for the non technical person but it is quite a simple process with the right instructions.
This first step is very important install the software coolbook($10) and fan control (Free)( not smc fan control). Set up coolbook to operate the cpu at the lowest speed and voltage for both power adapter and battery(1002MHz and .95Volts). Remove the keyboard to access the computer logic board (instructions can be found at iFixit). Remove the four screws and two connectors holding the heatsink to the logicboard and gently lift the heatsink out (very important that you leave the fan screwed in and connected). Close the computer back up if you wish to test just gently connect the keyboard and loosly sit the keyboard back in. Restart and reset the pram immediately. Let the computer boot up and then open system preferences and configure Fan Control to your liking. So far no random shutdowns for over a week (was getting many a day previously. -
Random Shutdown in 2010 for a 2006 Macbook
Hello-
I have a 2006 Macbook 1.83 GHz processor and I never had the whole random shutdown problem previously... it burned through batteries like nothing and I was about to install my third hard drive, but no random shutdown problems. Well, now I have it...
Anyway, it is out of warranty, obviously.
1) Will Apple still replace the heatsink, since it was defective even though I am out of warranty?
2) If not, does anyone know if by replacing the heatsink that should fix the problem?
ThanksSure Apple will replace the heat sync. At a price. I may be something else though. It might be full if dust after all these years. You could try putting a vacuum cleaner over the in vent and give it a good sucking. Worked for a friend of mine...

To Everyone with Random Shutdowns! (Solved! REALLY!)
Hey all,
I had posted about a week back about my Macbook (Core duo white, late 2006), it was having the same symptoms as some of the others with the known random shutdown syndrome (RSS). Like many others I had thought it was the end of my macbook and the logicboard needed replacing because that is what the 'genius' people do, but I was still wondering what would cause it. It would randomly shut off! (or so I thought) I'd be typing in Safari, watching a youtube video, and even playing games, it would just shut off and I could hear the hard drive spin down. I'd restart and it would do it again sometimes right away, sometimes hours later.
This got me to thinking (like others have said) that it must be an issue with over heating. To test my theory I backed up my HD, and tried to reinstall Snow Leopard after zeroing the HD (as a fresh install). During the install process the Macbook's fan started to get loud and then it happened, it died again! So, this proved to me that it is NOT a software/OS issue at all, which means the said efforts in other posts of changing screen saver and energy saver settings had nothing to do with the cause! Aha moment!
I thought to myself... something is making it shutdown, obviously, and has to do with too much heat as the fan was going crazy even while reinstalling the OS. After reading many posts on different support forums I came accross the possibility that it could be the heatsink and/or sensor that is attached to it. I also found out that this "RSS" only applies to the non-unibody, core duo, and core 2 duo macbooks... you know what that means?
These models are the only ones with the shared memory and GPU on the same heatsink! GAH! A possible solution presents itself? To make a long post even longer... I removed the keyboard, carefully unscrewed the heatsink and fan and what did I see? Cracked and dried out thermal paste on the CPU AND GPU, they are both under the same heatsink after all, this was bad, really bad.
Luckily I had some Arctic Silver thermal paste in a tube from years ago when I upgraded my PowerMac CPU. Using some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth I removed the crud on the heatsink, processor, and GPU (I might add that there was way too much paste on there in the first place). I waited an extra few minutes to make sure the alcohol evaporated, and then I applied a small (dime sized) amount of thermal past directly onto the two chips, I aligned the heatsink carefully and gave it a very small gentle push down onto the chips, reattached the sensor wire to the mainboard, and screwed the heatsink back in.
After putting the keyboard back on and making sure all screws were in... I immediately turned on the laptop and reinstalled the OS. The OS install took approximately 10 mintues! (crazy!) The last time I did that it took over 30 mins to install! I was stunned!
After the OS installed I let the computer idle and shut down, I let it sit for about an hour to allow the paste to contract as it cooled. After starting up again I immediately downloaded Temperature Monitor and installed it (I did have it running when my mac had RSS by the way), here are the results to prove my theory:
My Macbook with RSS:
CPU1 and CPU2 Idle temp - 114 degrees (F)
Heatsink temp - 128 degrees (F)
Approximate over heating temp - 184 degrees (F) (causing the heatsink sensor to shutdown the laptop)
My Macbook with new high quality thermal paste:
Idle temp of CPU1, CPU2, and GPU - 77 degrees (F)
Heatsink temp - 84 degrees (F)
Running temp with adobe CS4, youtube, and typing this message - 103 degrees (F)
Pretty amazing if you ask me!
Before I applied the thermal paste my Macbook took at least a minute to start up with a fresh OS install, now it only takes about 15 seconds! I have not heard the fan spin up and go crazy since! And I can't even explain to you how much fast it is now!
This does prove that Random shutdown syndrome (RSS) is caused ONLY by your GPU over heating due to old thermal paste between the chips and heatsink! A design flaw by Apple? probably not because thermal paste will crack and dry over time.
This also proves that energy conversion to data in the chips can decrease because of over heating, causing the computer performance to dramatically drop!
So before you take your out-of-warranty macbook to Apple or a repair shop, see what your internal temp readings are and try to replicate the problem with over heating your CPU/GPU! This was a 10 minute fix! I am still amazed at how much faster everything is, and haven't had a random shutdown since! I hope this helps alot of people that think they are out of luck and have to pay to get it fixed!
- Cory -I too have this problem as well and it has been getting worse lately, I don't know what to do anymore. Here is a little info about my macbookPro. I have the late 2008 unibody model, i bought it in late 2009 Refurbished from Apple. Recently my mac has been turning off out of nowhere. I may be doing something and all of a sudden it just shuts off, it usually happens faster when i start to open up more programs like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. My mac is out of warranty now and i dont know how much apple is going to charge me to fix it. i mean they want 50 bucks just to talk to them on the phone (ridiculous if you ask me)!.

Random Shutdown plagues Macbook Pro C2D as well?
Hello everyone,
I know the Macbooks suffer from random shutdowns, but I thought this issue was fixed in the recent models. Apparently, it's still a problem since my brand new macbook pro core 2 duo exhibits random shutdowns when it gets too hot. Yes, I have all my stuff up to date. No, the new firmware does not apply to the Core 2 Duo MBPs.
My question is, is this still a known problem? I haven't really hard of Macbook Pros suffering from this, is this also common with Macbook Pros?
My Macbook does not get extremely hot to the touch, contrary to some of the "Hot" threads on this board. But, I guess it's enough to short the circuit that causes immediate shutdowns. It's easy enough to avoid, but I'd like to push my Macbook to it's fullest without worry of shutdown.Well, this is what I've found out ...don't know if that will mean anything to you, but does not seem very good to me. Note that this was prior to the date I received my MBP.

First Crash --> computer suddenly OFF !
i've had 5 or six crashes since I received my MBP on Nov. 15th. Apple told me it must be a hardware problem. I have other stuff to read from the console if you're interested caus' quite frankly this does not make a lot of sense to me. -
K9N Platinum: CPU upgrade = Random shutdowns..
I just installed a new AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EE in my MSI K9N Platinum motherboard (MS-7250 v1.0, the 070 model according to the box). I had updated the BIOS to version 1.7 before installing the CPU. Anyhow, I got the CPU installed and it seemed to be running fine. Until I started playing my games. Upon playing fifteen (!!!) minutes of Day of Defeat, the system completely turned off. COMPLETELY. No error messages. I check core temp's log to make sure the CPU wasnt overheating; it wasnt. The max temp was 38C on one of the cores. Just to make sure the CPU wasnt the problem, I ran two instances of prime95 for 5 hours and there were no calculation errors whatsoever. I also ran 3-4 loops of SuperPi, using the 32M test. No errors.
I have come to the conclusion that it must be the motherboard, and possibly it does not like the CPU. Or else it is having the same random shutdown problems as many other K9N Platinum/Ultra boards are experiencing. From what i have read, this issue only relates to boards that are 040, 050, or 060 models. I have a 070 model, and I AM GETTING THIS PROBLEM!!
Help!!!

Any ideas?well, i know that ACPI has to do with power saving features.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACPI
and HPET also has something to do with CPUs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPET
and MCP55 is the nortbridge.
so i suppose i can conclude that it protects from overvoltage or promotes more power-saving? i dunno i really dont care as long as my PC works now, -
I have a Macbook Core Duo (white, 2006) model, obviously the care plan is expired. I have had a few issues since I bought it, first the hard drive went within a week after it's apple care expired, go figure, so I replaced the hard drive with a newer and larger drive. The Super drive was upgraded and also stopped reading/writing discs within a month of the apple care ending. Last month the inverter also went and causes the screen to randomly shut off. I was told if I took it in they would charge me to have it fixed so I just changed the parts out myself because it was easy enough to do.
On to the new issue: As of last week my Macbook is randomly shutting down. I have tried every reset possible, repaired and checked the HD and permissions, reinstalled Snow Leopard, and ran a diagnostic on the memory as well as reseating them. My powercord and battery are working fine and I know for sure that this is not what is causing the issue. I highly doubt it is a overheating issue as the laptop is not running hot and fans are working properly. I did, however, notice that it isn't really that random when it does turn off, I am almost always trying to watch a video or play a game, when I securly empty the trash it also shuts down about 10 seconds into the process. A part of me thinks it could be a GPU problem, but I have heard other people having this problem and apple had replaced their entire CPU.
Since this is my fourth incident that I have had I am wondering what I should do, I don't have the money to buy a new laptop and I dont want to take a visit to the store if they are going to charge me to replace it. Anyone have any suggestions? I am not looking for the "buy a new one" or the "you're out of luck, take it to the apple store" responses. I don't give up easily.Good day

Problems with random shutdown after replacing a swollen battery
Hello all,
Perhaps one of you can help with this issue.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 17" mid-2007 model. A few months ago, the power disconnected from the machine when the battery had already run down and the machine did a hard shutdown. When I booted it back up there were serious problems with the display. Eventually it stopped working altogether. I took it for service and it was determined to by the NVIDIA graphics processor problem, so Apple replaced my motherboard.
When I got the machine back from servicing, there was a rattle in the right fan that gradually got worse. After a while the touchpad button stopped depressing in the center. I also experienced several random shutdowns while operating on battery power. I learned about the swelling battery issue with macbooks and ordered a replacement. By the time the replacement battery arrived my original battery was quite swollen. I'm concerned that the swelling battery may have warped the case a bit, leading to the fan noise.
I have now replaced the battery, but I'm still experiencing random shutdowns after 20+ minutes of use on battery power. I have done the RSS tests that were recommended in other forums and there doesn't seem to be any random shutdown problems when I'm plugged in -- only under battery power. My understanding is that a swelling battery can sometimes cause the battery to disengage from the electrical contacts on the MB, causing a sudden shutdown. I'm wondering why the problem is persisting now with a new battery? After one random shutdown, I tried to power up again using the battery, while pushing the battery into place at various angles, but I couldn't find any angle that would give power to the machine. The fan noise is also still present.
Can anyone offer an explanation or advise on any methods to overcome these random shutdowns? I have checked the console and the machine isn't registering any error when it shuts down, although when it restarts it says "DirectoryService[35] Improper shutdown detected"Yep, it is video (or: or audio for video) so unless you're sure you need it (because you work or will work with the DVC Pro HD video/audio codec), you can remove the plug from its' folder and put it in your documents folder (don't trash it, I have no idea if it is necessary for non-DVC Pro HD users to have it installed too).
The WWW is littered with posts from people encountering bugs and crashreports with DVCPROHDAudio.plugin as the main suspect. Most of those posts seem to be from video people rather than audio folks.
http://www.google.nl/search?q=DVCPROHDAudio.plugin&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=or g.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
But, if you get crashes and you see this one mentioned in the report, disable it, restart, and see if the problem's gone. -
Not so random shutdowns...
Hi,
My Macbook is just over a year old now still under applecare, I had random shutdowns before and did the firmware update which fixed it. Yesterday, I had the +please hold down the power button...+ message and so did thinking little of it, after all it is not uncommon to have to do it once in a while. Since then though it has been intermittently restarting all on its own and occasionally throwing up the +please hold power...+ message. Interesting to note is the optical drive noise when it restarts itself. I know how it should sound, the kind of mechanical movement sound that happens when you restart normally (or launch parallels and windows grabs hold of your drive). However, occasionally on these restarts it pauses during this sound several times making the same noise but stuttering through it... Strange!
It seems that I can often make it restart or throw up the power button message by just lifting up the front of the computer, as you would if you were turning it around or something. This leads me to believe it's a hardware fault... Looking under the battery compartment the two outside screws that are on the battery connection side were loose and nearly falling out so I tightened those back up, still the problem persists.
After the last restart message I copied this error report, I have no idea what to look for, just wondering if anyone can see anything helpful?

I have tried a PMU reset, PRAM reset and whatever it is that happens when you hold the power button when you turn it on to make it beeeeeeep... The issue happens with or without the power cable attached.
Unless anyone can suggest anything here I'll be taking it to the repair centre...
Thanks for reading!Ok, this is not an answer but it may help you a little: have you checked your logs? It may be an indication of what has happened there. If you don't know the drill: go to console under applications/utilities, select logs, and go there to /library/logs/panic.log. Some information may appear there, for instance if there is some consistent cause like one of your processors, some specific fault.
Not much, I know, but at least you may glean something out of it. -

After a year, another chain of random shutdowns
can anybody tell what's going on with my computer from a remote desktop? by now that should be easy.
i had random shutdowns problems last year, one month after buying my macbook pro, but they seemed over after the download of the oct.2006 firmware. now they're back. as random as they were. could it be possible that the new battery update clashed with something? the appearance seem to have occurred just after that update. maybe a coincidence. but i had started to have battery failures - computer shutdowns at 95% of battery charge, with 28 cycles count - and was about to go replace it (the sick battery).
just i cant stand abandoning my computer in a dark room with many others, so i didn't turn it in and kept it on ACDC.
anybody may guess what i should do to avoid a premature death? There's nothing anyone here can do about this. We're all just users like you. Was the phone still covered by warranty? Was there an explanation from Apple?

Random shutdown on a 15" macbook pro
Hello, my macbook pro has started to randomly shutdown. The battery does not seem to charge much beyond 0% either. Here is the battery information from System Profiler -- is it likely just a battery issue?
Model Information:
Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-356a-75f4
Manufacturer: Sony
Device name: ASMB012
Pack Lot Code: 0003
PCB Lot Code: 0000
Firmware Version: 102a
Hardware Revision: 0400
Cell Revision: 0303
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 0
Fully charged: No
Charging: Yes
Full charge capacity (mAh): 1674
Health Information:
Cycle count: 309
Condition: Good
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 1945
Voltage (mV): 11875It's picking a particularly bad way of telling you - your MBP should never just shut down - bug given your charge capacity seems significantly down from what you should be able to achieve I'd say yes, it looks to be a battery issue.
How old is your Mac?
Your battery should retain about 80% of its charge capacity after 300 cycles, and since you only have 309 cycles, your battery seems to be much below that.
If you've an Apple Store nearby and you're under warranty or AppleCare you may want to ask about it - they might replace your battery at no charge, depending upon a wide variety of factors. -
This just DUGG'd
http://maba.wordpress.com/2006/09/01/macbook-shutdown-solved-at-last-hopefully/
"The heat sink expands during operation and gets into contact with the sensor cable and melts the cable’s isolation. This in turn causes a short circuit and, thus, the immediate shutdown of the Macbook. As the heat sink is cooling down, the heat sink contracts to the point that it looses its contact with the cable and breaks up the short circuit."I am experiencing random shutdown with my black MacBook, but suspect that it is a firmware issue rather than hardware issue for the following reasons:
1. When the MacBook shutdown to the point that it will not boot up, I immediately remove the battery and adapter, press the power button for a few seconds, replace the battery, and it will start up and operate normally.
2. The MacBook will operate normally by pressing the power button until the long beep, even when it has shutdown and refuse to boot up with a single press of the power button.
3. It could soon shutdown suddenly after a long period of power off or sleep (which means the CPU temperature is still low).
4. The shutdown could also happen after quitting an application with high CPU load with the fan running, which seems to be a case of sudden drop in CPU temperature.
I hope that Apple can update the SMC firmware quickly to address this issue. -
My X220 is running Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 32 bit. I have updated to the 1.21 version of the BIOS.
I have a 128 GB SSD,
I am still experiencing random shutdowns under these circumstances:
1. Only when connected to AC power. I am using 65W standard AC/DC adapter.
2, Has been connected to the LAN always when it happens
I have re-configured my computer: Will come back with results.
1. I did upggrade BIOS to 1.21
2. I have now reduced the System Performance settiung in Power Manaher from a value of "Maximum Turbo" to "Turbo".
Kommer tillbaka med findings.Grrrr.. while writing this entry - the computer made the random shutdown AGAIN (now using another machine). Lenovo - can you PLEASE make at least ONE Thinkpad with IBM quality....
Anyway .. here goes...
Bought an X220 i7 a few months back.
Data:
Model: 4291-36G
OS: Windows7 64bit (shipped with unit) + dual booting Ubuntu Linux 10.10 (64bit)
On BOTH Windows AND Linux these random shutdowns started to happen during the last week - with no change in my usage pattern (software development, browsing, email, etc. - under both linux and windows).
The most strange part is that the behavior feels like someone is pushing/holding the power key at random times (anything from 5 to 20 minutes after boot) - because windows goes to "fast sleep" and linux pops up the shutdown/sleep selector when it happens.
I just updated to the 1.21 bios (using a stand-alone CD from ISO).. luckily it didn't reboot while flashing...
This DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM (I am not sure what bios was there before).
This really smells like a HW issue.
NOTE: Temperature monitors say that the CPU is well under critical - so that doesn't seem to be the issue.
My guess is:
1. faulty motherboard (sending the power off event.. or other)
2. could it be related to the fingerprint reader? - I know it's a long shot - but every time it has been initiated, I think my palms have rested, touching the reader as well as putting a light pressure everywhere else on the palm rest (just trying to help you to troubleshoot the design flaw - it's still a HW issue ;-))
Lenovo - I have 3 years on-site support on it... how do I get a new unit ASAP (I live in Denmark)? Can I just move the HDD to the new machine (I remember that Win7 may have some annoying copy protection linking machine, HDD and OS)?
br
Lars
PS Lenovo - as I wrote in the beginning of this post... I have NEVER EVER EVER EVER (well, you get the picture) had ANY problems with this back when ThinkPads were done by IBM. Can you please start making some machines that are as stable as those? So far, I have been the Proud owner of an X31, T41p, T21 and many more... and *not so proud owner of* T61p and now X220 - both seem pretty flawed - and I seem to remember an IBM internal stating they had to send 1/2 a shipment of T61's back because of serious problems with design, construction, etc...
PPS I know I was a bit evil above... but still think that premium price should deliver premium product. -

Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchDaemons
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
