2007 15" Mac book pro. non starter

Hi all.
Hope someone can help me to determine whether my 2007 Macbook pro is worth trying to save or i should just ebay for spares or repair..
I never fully shut down the machine, more for convenience than anything else but yesterday found when waking it from sleep i had no display. This happened about two weeks ago but when i pressed the F2 brightness button on the keyboard the display suddenly came on so thought no more about it. Unfortunately this didn't work yesterday and i could get no response from any other key or keys so the only option left was to shut it down and reboot, which it did with no problems and worked flawlessly for about three hours. I then had a lazy lunch leaving the machine running, expecting as i have done before for the machine to do its power save setting thing. On my return it would not come back to life so thinking it was repeating it earlier problem shut the whole thing down to reboot. On pressing the power button it tries to start up but this lasts for about two and a half seconds then dies. I can hear the initial spooling of the hdd and optical drive but then stops dead. Battery, tho no longer at it best is fully charged. Magsafe is working green light on plug. Dose the same on battery power or using magsafe.
My initial thought was a hard drive failure but then the machine would still start just not boot into osx. Please correct me if im wrong.
So after googling the problem and trawling the forums reading similar problems and possible causes i.e hdd failure, logic board failure, etc, im still none the wiser.
Any help or advise will be much appreciated
MacBookpro 15"
2.4 intel core 2 duo
2gb Ram
200gb hdd

Thanks for the quick response sig. How would the display effect the power up of the machine tho?
Hmm.... another possible to add to the list.
I was hoping maybe the symptoms pointed to a probable cause. seems like it could be many tho. Bugger! dont want to spend money for someone to tell me its Knackered then tell me its going to cost a small fortune to fix.
I bought it second hand with a couple of months apple care left but that has long since expired.
I shall sleep on it.....

my mac book pro doesnt start up after a small flash in jack when plugged in

It's a mac book pro 17", OS X 10,5 . It worked perfectly but when I (or actually my friend) plugged the jack into the wall outlet it came a small flash (in the wall outlet) and then it didn't start up. No sound, no light on the screen. I didn't actually see what happened, but I asked if she plugged it in with the magsafe wire still attached to the computer, and she believed she might have. Is there anything to do? I have a couple of mac computers, two other mac book pro (writing on the newest one now - 13" - late 2011 - OS X Lion 10.7.5), if it could help.

  • My Mac book pro (2011) start-up goes straight to disk utlities and wont install mavricks.

    Hello,
         My mac boook pro 2011 wont start up to my internal harddrive. it will sit on the white screen for a bit before it takes me directly to the choose language then disk utlity and shows the;
    Time machine
    install osx
    get help online
    disk utlity
Ok so my harddrive is partitoned into two, but everytime i try to delete the partition drive, it wont let me. says (Macintosh HD2 cannot unmount please try again). And everytime i try to earse the free space, it wont do it as well. but its says it did.
Then i try to repair my disk but my verify/repair disc permissions is not choosable but the veriy/repair ARE choosable. i choose verify/repair option and it says everything is fine. but it still wont let me choose verify/repair disk permission. My Saftey Mode is not working ( circle with line through) so i cant fix that problem. I also done the reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC and still nothing.
Ok the problem goes further. my Mac book pro came installed with Snow Lepord not mavricks but it wants to install mavricks instead. I put my internet into some single thing and it switched it to Lion instead of mavricks. but that isnt the problem (just thought it was weird how it switched OSX system like that) the problem is that it doesnt want to download install any OSX system. First it didnt let me get pass the choose install drive wondow. , then i switched my date in the terminal and was able to sign in but it wont download any OSX system, it would say (Something came up, please try again). My install cd wont work, keeps spitting it out. And trying to do an OSX system download wont work through this browser on disk utltity (not enough space on the drive).
I was deleting log files from my mac through the partitioned drive and i accidently deleted a system folder that had logs. i was wondering if this was the problem and if its making my HD fail ir is my HD done? and can i put Yosemite on a usb and boot it that way or burning it to a CD and doing a cd install?
Please i need help becuase i use my mac for film and editing and my mac wont boot to the desktop, just to this window. ill try to post picutres of what happens.

That you are getting the BONG is a good sign, it's unlikely to be hardware if you are able to hear that.
Start by running SW update. It's not that there is a specific fix, but when updating it may rewrite some system files which may get this going again purely as a side affect. Worth a go, and should not harm the system.
Try reset the PRAM - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Hopefully one of these quick fixes works, otherwise we'll need to try isolate the issue next - so if still having a problem, I'd try create a new user and login as that user to see if the issue persists (which will tell us if it's system wide or user specific)

  • I am using Mac book pro non retina display with Yosemite and it is taking time to on the Mac . Please suggest me

    hi,
i am using Mac book pro with non retina display with latest software yosemitte. When I on the Mac it is taking much time to on the mac / to get main screen. Please suggest us if any option to make it fast

There are several things that could make the computer run slower than expected
or slower than previously experienced from time to time; if a new system was
installed into a computer with slowness and other issues, that may compound the
problem since an upgrade to an OS X is not necessarily a remedy for old trouble.
If the issue may be a performance concern, there are cause and effect reasons
behind computer functionality. And if the computer was super quick, then after
an upgrade to a newer OS X, super slow, there could be several things going on.
The software previously working in the computer may not be correct for a newest
operating system; or the computer hard disk drive may be getting too full of content
that has no relation to the function of the device. Not enough unused storage space
or capacity can contribute to an overall slowness. And this also would relate to the
computer's use of resources. More installed chip RAM can help a computer run
better, and if you have extensive saved content in the computer you made, get an
externally enclosed hard drive and see about how to go & move that accumulation
off the computer's limited space so it could run better.

    http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/
•Tech Guides - in addition to the above - from thesafemac:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
There may also be adware or other kinds of malware inadvertently installed in your
computer; so that is something else to consider, find & remove. Note info in guides.
You could use the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder (see Go in Finder menu) to
see if there are applications or processes running extensively that could point to
some waste of system resources. If there is something actually using anything at all
out of the ordinary. These kinds of things are hard to judge - if you aren't familiar.
So, anyway, hopefully you can get some ideas from the above site pages to help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac book pro wont start up in room temperature

Hello again, every one seems to be having issues with macs overheating, i'm having the contrary, mine will not boot up if it get to room temperature. It all started 3 months ago, when it will work perfectly then when I switched it off, left it for a while it will not boot up, so I though my motherboard was probably fried atleast, well fortunatley I live in italy and it was summer so one random 40degrees day after having left my mac laying around powered off a couplde of weeks (after having tried resetting everythning in it,SMC PRAM etc with no sucess) , i just tried the power button and it magically worked. So I dont know why i though of it but, to make sure i tried powering it off again leaving it a couple of mins to cool down, and tried it again and to my expectance it didnt work, so i got a blow dryer heated it up to operating temp (around 50°) and it works like a charm, this is obviously a problem, cause i cant be going around with a blow fryer to power up my mac (like in airports for eg ) so any clues what i could try before i decide to get a new mac? cause i aint paying half of what its worth to get a new motherboard.
    Thanks.

I've got exactly the same symptoms as Stickman. My MB Pro 17" 2.4Ghz from Mid-Late 2007 sounds like a textbook case for what Apple has written in its blurb in knowledge base Article: TS2377 re. distorted video or no video. I get no video even though MBP starts up, fan is running, battery charges, it even provides power to an external 2.5" Firewire hard drive.
I've made an appointment to take it into an authorized Apple store tomorrow, but I wanted to ask a quick question:
I had already removed the hard drive, thinking both to upgrade it to a bigger one and to see if it might have been the culprit. I had planned to put it in an external Firewire case too, after buying a bigger hard drive. BUT, when I set aside the HD and hardware that holds it in place (small bracket and screws, grommet screws for the hard drive) I seem to have misplace the little bits of hardware (duh!) So at the moment I don't have any way to put the original HD back into the computer; or at least, to hold it in place when it is installed.
Does anyone know if this will be a problem when I take the computer in to be checked? I know that the check the technicians do is to boot the Macbook Pro from an external drive with the nVidia test software on it, so the internal HD may not be needed for that. What do you think? And later, if the MBP gets sent in to Apple to get the logic board replaced, would the missing HD and bracket and screws be a big problem? Do you think Apple would say that I may have caused the problem when I opened the computer?
Any thoughts, especially if anyone has any similar experience, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • My Mac Book PRO doesent start, what can i do?

I cant start My Mac, what can i do To get it To start up again. When i push the powerbutton i can hear à click but nothing happends.

Since you can't even turn you machine on - and you don't say if you're running Lion or Mountain Lion which both have Recovery partitions - it's impossible to diagnose your problem over the Internet. If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, see if you can boot into the Recovery partition by holding down the Command and R keys while booting. When there (if you can get there) use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your hard drive.
If you're not having any luck with the Recovery partition, boot with the installation disc that came with your MacBook Pro and try running Disk Utility from it.
If you cannot do anything above, try running the Apple Hardware Test (if you can). If you're able to run the test, note any errors that might appear.
If all of this fails, you're just going to have to break down and get your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP. Machine may be fried.

  • Mac book pro automatically start to recovery

I pushed in and held down the power button and then restarted the computer and it automatically went to the recovery options it will not start up normally please help

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mid-2009 Mac Book Pro Screen Starting to come off

    Hi.
I bought my MacBook Pro in July of 2009, and yesterday I realized that the screen "cover" was beginning to come loose at the top near the iSight camera. Is there a way for me to re-secure the screen so that things don't get worse?
Right now, there is no problem with viewing the screen itself. I guess that you could say that the black border surrounding the screen itself is beginning to come loose.
Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how I could re-secure this part of the screen?
    Thanks.

Any suggestions on how I could re-secure this part of the screen?
    Yes: Don't!
Let Apple do it. This is why you have a warranty.
