2007 iMac Blurred Screen of Death

Hi, I'm running an intel based iMac with 4GB of ram, and am running OS X 10.10.1. I have recently encountered a rather large problem. I have been attempting to boot, however nothing will respond. I have reset the NVRAM and the PRAM, and it will no longer recognize that there is a keyboard connected. I have attempted to boot into the Recovery HD, however it will not budge. I have also tried to open the diagnostics tool, and that will not work. Please help. I have also reinstalled the RAM.
Thanks.

  • 2007 iMac Gray Screen After Boot - Can't do anything

    Hello,
I have a 2007 iMac. When I turn it on, I hear the boot chime and see the light gray screen, and then it goes to a darker gray screen. It won't get past the dark gray screen, and the screen doesn't show any icons or anything. It's just a solid dark gray. I've tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, starting in safe mode, etc., and nothing seems to be making a difference.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, and how I can fix it?
    Thanks in advanced!

I've tried all of those things. I don't believe the peripherals are causing the problem. I forgot to mention that I have it connected to a TV via VGA adapter. The iMac's monitor doesn't work.

  • IMac white screen of death

When I start up my iMac, I hear the start-up sound and see the white screen, followed by two beeps, then three beeps repeatedly. It will not respond to anything.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Inherited iMac, White screen of death, etc...

Hello, Fairly new to the world of mac.
    I have been given a iMac 20" G5 a M9250LL/A...
Looks in good condition, powers up ok. But I get a white screen with a flashing mac folder icon.
Tried resetting the Navram, epram and everything else under the sun...
I installed a new hard drive, a 500GB western digital one. Power up and it still doesn't see it.
I then held down the option key, hopefully it would see it?. no chance...
Boots in Open firmware ok and see's hard drive, etc...
So I tried connecting via a firewire cable from a friends macbook and success, reformatted the drive, installed Snow Leopard and nothing.
nada, zip... starts up on the macbook just fine.
Someone told me that I need to install Tiger first?.. that true?
I've spent a few days trying all kinds of things I've found on youtube and google and drawing a blank here...
Would anyone be able to offer some advice? - I'm a bit confused as I've tried everything!!
Would love to get this machine working, I rather not have to take it to the dump and have to get a 2nd hand windows machine off ebay!!
    HELP!!

    Hello, Just an update..
Thanks to rccharles and michelpm for your reply's they were very helful. Thank you!
I'm a great believer in recycling and upcycling and it would be an awful shame to see something heading for the dump that would probably only need a few new capacitors for couple of quid...
It was an inherited machine (probably for good reason) and 5 1000uF caps were bad (bulging) TBH, I had nothing to loose and I have a old PC laptop to use should I do a hideous job. Figured I just go for it, besides, it kept me busy between a few shifts at work.
The only electronics I did at school was in the Physics lab and even then, I wasn't really paying much attention. But I'm a believer that anyone can do anything, if they set their mind to it... just take your time and prepare
    1) So I got myself onto youtube watched some videos on soldering.
Some good, some hopelessly boring others, mildly disturbing..
    2) I bought a soldering kit off ebay for £8 which came with a very helful guide, entitled:
"The basics of Electronics Soldering and Desoldering Guide" by Alan Winstanley.
    3) Ordered the capacitor kit off ebay for £8
    4) Borrowed a DVD of Leopard.
made a cup of tea, deep breath and then went about desoldering and soldering in the new caps.
20 min job and then reverse of removal, press the power button and a few nervous seconds and it was up and running and installing off the hard drive.
So, basically, what I'm saying is don't junk your machine for the sake of a couple of capacitors.
If I can do it, you definately can!
    Total spend:
    iMac                       £0.00
    Capacitor kit            £8.00
    500Gb Hard Drive   £18.00
    Bluetooth Card         £5.00
    Soldering Iron kit      £8.00
    Total:                      £39
Pretty sure you could'nt buy a working iMac for under £40, so I think I did pretty well, all things considered.
    This fixed:
    Hard Drive not being recognised
    Fan sounding like a Hoover
    White screen of D E A T H
    Found a useful website here:

If you are in the situation I was in and had nothing to loose, give it a shot, not only will you learn something, but you'll get the satisfaction of repairing it and breathing new life into an old device.
    Cheers!

  • 2007 imac black screen...Graphics or Mobo issue ?

First of all i would like to thank those whose postcount is solely made up out of recommandations to have better bought applecare or contact the good people from apple support for browsing away fromthis post without copypasting such advise.
The problem is about a old 24" imac.
Initially it stopped booting to the OS but still chimed, now i am facing a black screen, no gong at boot and the external white light illuminated permanently.
After swapping around RAM and testing with known-good Ram of a same generation 20" imac - no change - i went and tried switching on without RAM ( now blinking light) which reacted like a known-good imac would without RAM.
The one green led visible after taking away the screen frame and removing the screen ( but leaving both cables connected so the screen "should" still work) on the MoBo close to the RAM slot is not lit if i unplug the Mobo from the power supply, unplugging screen, screen inverter and data cable separately, disconnecting power and data to HDD and DVD drive all reasulted in the same solid white external light, one green mobo LED and no display picture or boot jingle.
I then went to try connecting the power cable while the power button is pressed, resulting in all 3 fans at full spped and the hdd making seeking noises other than the incomplete startup noises earlier - but still white light and no display picture.
This all rules RAM as error out, makes the MoBo and PSU less likely but still potential candidates and points to the graphics as commonly faulty area.
Pitty is that the apple troubleshooting guide states it will be the motherboard as likely reason.
I took a deep smell around the mbo and its dust when removing it, no clog-up ( yet lots of it) and more important no smell of a burned resistor or cooked hardware - a smell i know alltoo well from electric bike controllers and former shot PC hardware due overclocking.
    Now, question is/ are:
    - What white light or mobo LED blink code should i see on a faulty graphics identified in post ?
Can a graphics card that is faulty halt POSt test with a white light as sole indicator ?
-Does any of my tests done and LED lights shown rule out the Movo as faulty, leaving only graphics and faulty graphics power supply rail as possible reasons ?
I could access another same imac to test the graphics card, but its a awfull lot of work.... if i could be more certain it is the graphics card and not the MoBo or PSU and if the CPU is likely give it the backing oven treatment, cross my fingers while tapping on wood for a few minutes and hope this refluxed the possible cracked G-DDR-Rams or the GPU`s soldering cracks tha appear to kill most older cards that do not go through overheating.

if the fan is running very loud, the sensors are telling it to. this means there is excessive heat hitting them.  try hitting the on/off button on the back of your iMac gently, and turn down the brightness on your keyboard to 2 or 3 lines. use the F1 key on your keyboard to turn the brightness down, while pressing the on/off button lightly, without turning the computer completely off. if the screen image appears again, it could be the LED screen sensor is overheating, causing the fans to kick into high gear, to try to cool the screen. if your screen does re-appear with lower brightness, you can use an external fan control (SMC Fan Control) app to manually adjust the fans on your iMac. This won't solve the heating issue, but will allow you to use your iMac temporarily. As it is long out of warranty, you will have to find other means to find the remedy.
So, in short, yes it may NOT be the GPU or logic board, but a heat sensor. let me know if lowering the brightness on your screen works to restore an image for you.

  • My late '09 iMac white screen of death- help

Hello to the community.....not happy today with my mac.  My name is denyason, from the uk.
    It's a 27 " quad core 2.66 ghz intel i5
                    8gb 1066mhz ddr3
                    2tb hard drive
It came with no cd and my SuperDrive doesn't work.
I have the latest updates with Os lion as of 9th February 2012.
Turned on mac- stuck on white apple logo screen with spinning gear. So I entered safe mode- pressed shift and load bar springs up on apple logo screen.......does about a quarter then it disappears and nothing happens- stuck with the spinning gear again.  This is very disappointing considering I paid nearly 2 grand for this feb 2010.  Only 2 years old.  What do I do.  I only have an 1 tb external hd for backup.  If one can't even get to safe mode what do they do?  Searches say install cd but I didn't get one with mine?
Help would be great but luckily I recently got an iPad so at least I can use the web.

Is there anyone that can help me?  I have tried Resseting the nvram/pram and nothing.  Tried shift-command-v and it just stops after a string of text?

  • Intel iMac with 10.5.8 - Grey Screen of Death but worse please help!

Okay, this has happened three times now in six months, and I'm about to go out of my mind. Everytime it's a little different but basically:
My iMac becomes unresponsive, whether by a system lock up, or I wake up in the morning (like this morning) to a black screen with the white light still on, as if it were asleep. Nothing I do wakes the computer or otherwise makes it respond, so I hold the power button down for a few seconds and it shuts off.
Now, when I boot up, I get a grey screen with the Apple logo with the spinning black/grey pinwheel.
Inserting a CD does nothing. In fact, now my only install CD of Leopard is stuck in the slot-loading drive. I've tried everything I can to eject it: hold down eject on boot, left mouse button on boot, option on boot, commandoption+pr, command+v, etc. etc. etc.
I'm a software developer for OS X and have extensive hardware knowledge, so I kind of know a bit about what I'm doing.
The iMac will not boot off of a CD. It doesn't even recognize the CD. I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive with a current Time Machine backup, but I don't think those are bootable.
Anyway, in the past, to resolve this issue, I've had to take the iMac apart, put the internal hard drive into an external enclosure, and mount the drive onto my MacBook Pro. Interestingly enough, when I do this the drive mounts perfectly fine and shows all files exactly as they should be. So it's something to do with Leopard destroying it's boot record, or some other system configuration.
Even worse, I cannot simply reinstall Mac OS X from the laptop, because the installer says the hard drive needs to be formatted before an install can occur. So either way I'm losing all my data (even though as I said I have a current backup).
Well this time I haven't taken it apart yet. But the install CD is stuck in the drive. Even if I got the hard drive out, and mounted on my MacBook, my other install CD is too damaged to use, so I MUST get this CD out of the iMac.
    My questions are:
What do you do when the grey screen of death occurs, and the computer won't even boot off of the CD?
What do you do to get a CD stuck in an iMac out? Especially when the iMac is in the grey screen of death mode?
What in the world is causing this to happen EVERY 3-6 MONTHS??!
Someone please help... I'm going insane.

Hi I am having the identical problem with my 24" intel iMac 2007..... Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm on round 3 now and with a completely blank grey screen and it won't start up from the disk 1.. I also have diskwarrior and techtool pro as well as the osx leopard and snow leopard disk... The HD is new.. Replaced by apple 3 months ago.. Don't know the cause the first time this happened about 9 months ago.. 2nd time, 6 months ago it never rebooted from the office for mac 2008 critical update... Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . I swear to never ever use another Microsoft product as long as I live if I can just fix this once more... Help me please

  • White screen of death - iMac OSX Lion

I upgraded my 2007 iMac to Lion and after a few days of perfect running the think locked up.  When I forced the power off and back on it seemed to be booting fine (chimes, apple logo, disk spinning up and I could hear the drive head seeking) but then it froze up in the "White Screen of death" (WSOD).  It was complete lockd up again, and nothing would bring it back.  I had to reboot again.  And again.  Everytime it seems to be ok, but then locks up after it the screen goes white. . I did command option , p r keys with three chimes. I have unplugged it and let it sit.  I disconnected all periferals.  I reset the SMC.  I booted into Single User mode and used unix commands to check the HD.  No errors found.  I disconnected my wireless Time Capsule.
Note that it appears to be booting fine at first with the useaul Apple Logo.  And when I boot into the Single User mode all the text indicates no faults.  The display and HD appear fine.
I inserted my original OSX Leopard disk and and tried to boot from it, using the "C" boot process and the Option boot method to manuualy select the DVD.  No good.  It just went into the WSOD again.
I have no idea what to try next!

    RATS!
After ersing (and zeroing) out the HD nothing changed.  I still could not completely boot up the install disk.  I tried the original Leopard disk, and the Apple Lion USB thumbdrive.  Both started the boot process, and gave me the grey Apple logo.  But then after a minute or two jumped into the White Screen of Death.
I then replace both RAM chips.  No change.
Now I have a brick.  A very large and heavy brick.
But the computer will woerk as Target Disk Mode, and it actually goes through a normal boot cycle.  That is, I can go into the Single Ud=ser mode and all UNIX command work fine.
Does anyone have any additional ideas of what can cause this?
    Peter

  • Blue screen of death with HDD Hardware Test error on iMac HELP!!

My iMac is not starting up.  It just get the blue screen of death during startup.  It is a 2.66 mghz duo with 2gb 800 ram.  I was able to get the Hardware test to run and got an error of 4M0T/2/40000004: HDD-1560.  I am assuming it is an error with the internal hard drive since I have nothing else hooked up to the mac other than the keyboard and mouse right now.  Does this code mean my hard drive is completely shot?  Any help would be appreciated.

Having an intermittent issue where my iMac blanks out on me. On restarting I get several bands running down the screen with pixels jumping around within the bands, then the white screen of death and nothing... This happens intermittently and usually restarts OK. Happened again three days ago and wouldn't restart for two days (again the bands/pixels etc) but now operating fine? • IMac 27" white screen of death

    Hello.
I've recently changed HDD in my iMac to OCZ Vertex 2 SSD in a local Apple service. Everything was OK until today. I woke up my iMac from Sleep, it showed the beachball and became frozen and unresponsive. I pressed Power button to switch it off. After that I've pressed Power button again to switch it back on. But... all I could see was a White Screen.
iMac doesn't react on pressing "C", "Shift", "D", "ALT" and other combinations that could help me. I even can't boot using Install Disk. All I can see is a White Screen of Death.
What are the suggestions to my issue?
I'd like to hear any help.

Well, I'm sure that the Apple service who performed the work would have a warranty? I would be contacting them immediately and tell them to fix the problem without cost to you.

  • My iMac computer screen is blurred by black and white lines.

My iMac G5 screen is blurred by black and white horizontal lines and tiny rectangles. This occured after I woke it up from sleeping. Everything else seems to be working fine, but is impossible to see what I'm doing. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Fixed it! Rebooting the computer while holding down the command, option, P and R keys while letting the chime ring 4 or 5 times did the trick.

  • Help needed-white screen of death while attempting to migrated files from imac to macbook

Using the migration program on my macbook (about a month old), I rebooted my imac (about a year old) while pressing down the 't' key.  Instead of rebooting and bringing up the firewire symbol, I got the white screen of death.  Thankfully, I have gotten the imac working again (except I can't get it to recognize my wireless mouse)…but am afraid to try the migration app again for fear of having the same problem and doing irreperable damage......any suggestions for what went wrong the first time and what I should do differently?  Also, any ideas on how to get it to recongize my mouse? It has recongized my keyboard with no issue.

    Download at www.memtestosx.org
Power on your MBP while holding down the Command and S keys to force Mac OS X to boot into Single User Mode. Once you see a black screen with white text, you can release the key combination. After all the system logging is done scrolling past, type 'memtest all 2' (without the quotes) to test all memory two times. Two passes should be enough to detect any blatant problems, but I wouldn’t hesitate to let it run for hours on end if I suspected an intermittent memory problem (memtest all). When complete, you should be greeted with “All tests passed” if your RAM is in good condition. If your system locks up or freezes indefinitely during the test, you may have a bad memory module on your hands.
