2007 iMac Crash.

My 2007 iMac running SL froze up opening a website and slowly started shutting down windows until all that was left was a gray screen with the spinning startup dial showing.  I tried a hard reset but now all I have is a white screen with the Apple, the startup spinner and for a short term a progress bar.  Any ideas on how to fix?

Boot with the SL install disc, launch Disk Utility, and repair the HD. Once you've ascertained there aren't any HD errors, reinstall the OS, launch Software Update, and get up to the latex 10.6.8. Your .4 version is woefully outdated. Finally, launch Disk Utility, repair the permissions, and restart.

My imac 2007 keeps crashing and then it beeps continuously when starting up and just has a black screen.

Don't know what caused it other than RAM does occasionally fail.
Don't suppose you bought it from either Crucial or Macsales, as they guarantee their chips for life and will swap them over for replacements.
Sometimes, pulling the RAM chips out and re-seating them will get things working again.
Did you replace the original sticks or add to empty slots? It's often a case of trial and error to see which one/ones have failed. If the original chips were taken out and you still have them try pulling the chips that are currently installed and replacing them with the originals. Or, if the originals are still installed, just pull the additional chips and test. As I say, trial and error. Good luck!

  • Replace Hard Drive - 2007 iMac

    Hi,
I recently upgraded/replaced the orginal 320GB HD in my mid-2007 Intel iMac with a 1TB hard drive using the Recovery Assistant Tool I downloaded and installed to an external USB thumb drive prior to replacing the hard drive. I was able to reboot my iMac, select the Recovery Disk Assistant on my external USB drive, install Mountain Lion over the internet and perform a restore from a Time Machine backup.  Worked great.
I will need to perform this same hard drive replacement procedure on a similar mid-2007 iMac for my son.  The hard drive on my son's mid-2007 iMac has crashed hard, and Disk Warrior cannot even repair it.  My question revolves around the Recovery Disk Assistant Tool that I used to replace the hard drive on my iMac.  Since I downloaded this Recovery Disk Assistant Tool on my iMac and then installed it to an external USB thumb drive, can I use the Recovery Disk Assistant program on my USB external thumb drive to perform the same hard drive replacement procedure on a different Mac computer, in this case my son's iMac?
    Thank you,
    Jon

  • My 2007 iMac seems to reset the home screen when not in use.  I am running mavericks and have had no other issues... just curious if this is a sign of something worse or to come?

I updated to Mavericks and love it.  Its made both my 2007 iMac and 2007 MacBookPro faster.  But I have noticed in the last couple of days that my iMac screen with periodically go blank except for the background photo I set... then just as fast the icons on the desktop flash back up.  Is this a sign of something wrong or impending?

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you remove it according to the developer'sinstructions. You may need to boot in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to show a status icon. According to reports, that may be enough to stop the Finder from crashing.

  • Mid 2007 iMac SSD in optical bay - cannot write to last block of device

    Hi All,
I've just replaced my optical drive in my 20" mid 2007 iMac (Dual core, 2.4 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM running Mavericks) with a solid state drive (Crucial MX100). The plan is to transfer my boot disk to this drive while keeping my 1 Tb HDD for media and such.
I followed the ifixit guide and it all went smoothly, however when I try to partition or erase the new SSD using Disk Utility, it tells me "Operation failed - cannot write to last block of the device". After googling, I found some answers here that suggested the optical bay cable may be faulty, so I bought a replacement and swapped it in, but no such luck, same problem. I also saw some threads suggesting that the boot disk should be in the original hard drive spot, but since this isn't the boot disk (yet) this shouldn't be the issue.
My computer recognizes the new SSD but won't allow me to partition it. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
    Thanks!

    3. The new disk is just bad.
OK. If that's the case, I'll just get another disk.
Lots of problems with that hybrid drives on Mac's on these forums, get another one that's 7,200 RPM and from Western Digital, not Seagate.
With a 7,200 RPM you get more performance across the entire drive, not just what's cached in the small flash portion of the hybrid.

    1. Hybrid drives: I'm on number 8 in 6 different machines, no problems at all, what happens when you try?
    2. The OP is not using a Hybrid.
    3. Lot's of problems with WD drives not booting on these forums though.

  • What adapter do I need to connect my 2009 Macbook Pro to my 2007 iMac?

What adapter do I need to connect my 2009 Macbook Pro to my 2007 iMac? I get really confused with all of the different cables out there an I want to make sure I get the correct one.
    Macbook Pro Model is: Late 2009, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
iMac Model: Late 2007, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
    Thanks!

The 2007 iMac does not support cabled input. see > Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Like Niel suggest's, your only option is to use a network based connection like > ScreenRecycler

  • Connecting mid-2007 iMac to LG TV via mini dvi to HDMI

I am trying to connect my mid-2007 iMac to my 42" LG HDTV to no avail. I am running iOS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I bought the mini dvi to HDMI adapter and plugged the iMac into the TV. I went to the display tab in the system settings and see that the iMac recognizes the tv. I went to the arrangements section and it recognizes the tv. When I click on gather windows it even calls it the LG TV. However, there is nothing showing on my TV. It says no input detected. When I move my mouse to the right side of the screen it disappears like it is going to a second monitor.
    Any thoughts?

Hey Corinthone, did you ever figure it out? I have a mid2007 iMac running snow leopard & a 120hz LGTV 42". I was having the same issues as you(yes Frankie, I made sure I was selecting the correct hdmi input). Now with the same setup, my LG recognizes the HDMI input from my iMac. It says connecting but then 'no signal' on the screen. The hdmi2 is still showing a connection in 'inputs' just no picture on TV. I started changed the setting via my mac but still nada. The lg is 120hz. Does that have anything to do with it?  Thanks

  • How do I get my projector to recognize a mini DVI to s-video connection? (2007 iMac)

I purchased an adapter to display my (mid-2007) iMac screen through a projector. With the adapter attached to the mini DVI port, and an S-video cable attached to the projector, I get nothing (the projector says "no source found"). I tried "system preferences--->displays--->detect displays" and nothing happened (the only other option in that window is "gather windows" which also does nothing). I guess it's possible I could have gotten a defective adapter. I know the s-video cable is good since it works from my DVD player to projector. I'm trying to play a movie file on the iMac and project in onto a screen through a projector. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    klimberdude wrote:
hey, thanks for those links! But, do you really it's a defective adapter?
You are welcome..! It most likely is incompatible.
I'd be bummed out if the OEM one didn't work either.
That is the problem with needing or having to buy outdated hardware that no one makes or supports.
What if it's the DVI port that's the problem?
The only way to find out is to test it with one of the following Mini DVI Adapters.
The Mini DVI to DVI adapter, a DVI cable and a DVI monitor.
The Mini DVI to VGA adapter, a VGA cable and a VGA monitor or VGA projector.
The Mini DVI to Video adapter, an S-Video or composite cable and an old TV or projector.
Several posts suggest selecting "mirroring" in the displays section, but that option doesn't show up)
The Extended Desktop and Mirroring options only work if a second monitor or projector is detected by the display preferences.

  • My mini dvi output port is no longer working (2007 iMac) please help!

My mini dvi output port is no longer working, can this be replaced or do I need a new motherboard? (it's a 2007 iMac, no longer under warrantee. Long story short when I was out of town someone cut my power cord on my tv I went to turn the tv on and looked at the back of the tv to see if there was any loose connections and found the cord sliced 3/4 of the way through. I must have bumped the cord and it sparked and made a loud pop noise. Well it fried the tv (which has since been fixed) but everything that was connected to it (my ps3, receiver, and my iMac) ports are all not working now... (and yes i did try new hdmi cables to see if it was just that) If this is a hardware issue what exactly is needed to fix this? A new main board? Any feedback would be great on this. I took it to apple and they said $650 to replace the motherboard... Was just wondering if this port can just be replaced or if it is a part of the main board and that does need replacing. Everything else works fine on all three things (ps3, receiver, imac) just the outputs are fried on them. Is there any other way I can do video out of my iMac other than mini dvi? I'm not paying for the repair so I don't mind having apple replace the board, but for $650... I may as well get a new iMac for $500 more...

If Apple said the motherboard is gone, that's your answer. Even if you were to find out the port isn't part of the main board, it's all connected when you're talking about a power surge/short as you described it. And yes, I'd never invest $650 in a 5 year old computer.

  • IMac Crashing; No Fixes Working/Getting a Chance to Work

Hi, this is my first time on these forums asking a question, so forgive me if I've categorised this wrong or something.
I use my iMac nearly everyday for browsing the Internet, word prossessing, digital drawing and playing Minecraft. So, personally, I don't think it is ever being put to degree of stress because I've been doing those same tasks on it for well over a year and it has run smoothly and given me no trouble. However, two days ago, I logged in and got a finder error message, which although I found odd, I simply okayed, not really taking a note of it as I in no way expected  crashing issues to arise from it. The error code started with something like -108, which I now believe was the code -10810.
So I continued using the computer after I okayed the message, only to find that Skype (which automatically opens at login) quit unexpectedly. After clicking the "reopen" button on the report,  the Skype icon bounced once, the blue light underneath appearing for a second. After this I noticed the finder report and clicked it's "reopen" button and thought it didn't work as the report was still there, but it was in fact a second report as every time I tired to open finder, I would receive a new report in mere mili-seconds. I tried other programs such as Safari and Minecraft and they all wouldn't open. Then I went to restart the computer when I noticed the Apple icon and toolbar missing. So I shut down the computer using the power button.
On reboot, things started going crazy. Booting took a while, when it loaded the desktop, it would fade to blue for a few seconds then fade back to the desktop. After a few minutes, the dark, transparent curtain moved down the screen and the message "You have to restart your computer" appeared.
I've tried numerous times to find out the problem/fix it but nothing seems to be working. Worse, the computer either crashes/freezes at login, crashes within seconds of reaching the desktop or works fine (with noticable odd things occurring [such as the screen going blue, desktop items disappearing and then reappearing] but if I try to run things that may help fix my problems (such as software update, reinstalling OS X) the computer crashes/freezes.
    What I've tired so far:
The reset (I can't remember the name) where you detach the power cable and hold down the power button for five seconds, then reattach the cable and turn on the computer. No apparent effect.
    Safe Mode:
Worked first time, however it crashed while on the desktop on second and third use, after which I haven't used it.
    Single-User Mode for fsck:
fsck ran fine, reporting that it did alter something and I had hoped that this had fixed it, but as soon as I reached the desktop, the iMac crashed.
    Software Update:
My Internet is bad enough as it is (less than 1MB/Sec, problem with living in a rural area and being on a contract until October) so I haven't been keeping up with some updates as it takes forever to download them. However,  anytime I try to update now, the computer either crashes, won't open Software Update or freezes while it goes to install the updates.
    Disk Utility:
    Found nothing wrong.
Reinstalling Mac OSX: (Via holding down C at bootup and from the disk if I reach the desktop.)
Either the computer freezes on the Apple logo and spinning gear (which usually doesn't even appear whenever I booted up the iMac) when I hold down C, or it will freeze/crash as the computer tries to restart opening the utilities panel if I run the reinstall from the desktop.
Everytime I've tried to boot the computer today (day three) has resulted in the computer staying on the Apple logo and spinning gear. So without going any further, I decided to ask this to the community because nothing seems to be working, worse being the fact that I'm just on my holidays from University and I'm pretty much lost without the computer
As for the iMac's details I'm really not sure since I generally use the "About this Mac..." feature which I can't get to now. Although I think the only important bits is that it is running on OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with no external hard drives.
I'd really appretiate any help, thanks
    Aletonum

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • My iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when Iog off an account. I looked at the Console for a log but I am not sure what I am looking for. What is the best way to try to find what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have an issue where my iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when I log my wife's account off. I'd like to get it resolved as it is very annoying. We switch between accounts all the time and everytime it crashes I lose a bunch of info from my account. Can anyone help me understand how to fix this issue?
