2007 iMac, replaced hard drive, can't recover old files from old hard drive!

So I have a 2007 intell imac, the hard drive went out, I replaced it and bought a thermalake blacx hard drive doc to get my files off the old hard drive.  I run Disk Utility, it can see the old hard drive but it can't repair it or verify it.  Do I need to get a third party to get the info off hte old hard drive??? HELP!!!HELP!!!!!

You could use a data recovery service but that's going to be really expensive. You could also try a data recovery software like DataRescue III http://store.apple.com/us/product/TX415LL/A/prosoft-data-rescue-3
Or DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
Either might help, I prefer DiskWarrior, but it's also possible that neither will. A hard lesson learned regarding backups I suppose.

  • Using Data Rescue II to recover lost files from corrupt hard drive!!!

OK I am terribly confused. I found out my MacBook Pro hard drive is corrupt and I can't even start up my computer. I was told to get Data Rescue II, another Mac, and an external hard drive.
I have all of the above but have no idea how to make it work!! How do I access the corrupt HD on the current iMac I am using with Data Rescue and then transfer the found files to the external HD??? Please I need help asap!!

First, if you have an external drive, then install OS X on the external drive. Boot from the external drive, install Data Rescue, then run Data Rescue and see if you are able to recover any files from the bad drive.
You boot from the external drive by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the external drive then click on the down arrow button.
If you do not have an external drive then you can try connecting the two computers with a FireWire cable and booting the computer with the bad drive into Target Disk Mode. Boot the good computer normally. Install Data Rescue and run it to see if you can recover anything from the bad drive. My guess is this method will not likely work, but one never knows without trying.
BTW, have you tried the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Can't open office files from my usb drive

    Dear forum
Sins a few weeks ago i am not able to open office file from my USB-drive.
However i can copy the file to the desktop and than i can open them.
I have this problme only (for as far i know) with office files.
    greetings Ypkoba

If the drive is NTFS format, the Mac can read, but not write thiose drives natively.
So the issue may be that the temp file and the output file cannot be created on the same drive.

  • Recovered illustrator file from a hard drive will not open

    Hi,
I just recovered  some illustrator CS2/CS3 files that were accidently deleted from a hard  drive using Recuva version 1.39.509.  The files were detected as being  in excellent shape and they are recognized as illustrator files in  windows.  But I can not open them!
Please help!  These are months of work that could be lost!
Dear Jacob - I dont know why the previous discussion disappeared.  I have tried all your suggestions, including following the instructions for recovering illustrator files... None of them worked!  I am at a loss!  Again, every single one of the recoverd illustrator files can not be read, are supposedly 100% healthy from the softwared used to recover them, but they do not open!  Other files such as word adn images were recovered successfully - I dont understand what is missing here!

    TG,
As you can see on the pages mentioned in post #3, you can open the AI files as text files, and then you can see and compare the lines of code building each file.
The first part of each file is the wrapping defining the structure, folllowed by the part defining the artwork. Some of the artwork part may be corrupted, but more likely the structure part at the beginning is (it may be as little part snipped off at the very start).
So you can copy (at least some of) the part of code defining the artwork from the corrupted file and insert into the sound file after the initial part.
You may compare the two files and try to work out which part to move and where, using the file parts shown on those Adobe pages as guides.
I hope this was not too woolly.

  • Recovering aperture files from crashed hard drive?

    Hi,
I'm trying to recover Aperture photos which weren't backed up externally (I know) from the hard drive of my MBP in an external mount, I can navigate to the library but cannot find files to backup the master images.  Do I need to just copy the library or do I need to look somewhere else.  I cannot search using aperture as that isn't installed on the computer I'm using.  Would be grateful for any thoughts!
    Cheers

    Hello,
if you want to recover data from a drive after it crashed, don't do  anything to that drive that writes data to it. You might try recovery software like Disk Drill to access files, see e.g. this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16641843#16641843
But I do not understand from you post, how your Aperture library is organized, please explain a little bit more:
Do you have a managed or a referenced library?
Did the system drive of your MBP crash or an external drive, and which parts of your Aperture Library and master files were on the drive that crashed?
If you library is managed, then all your master image files should be contained inside the Aperture library package. This package can be copied using the Finder by dragging it to a new location. If you want to reassure yourself, that it contains all your master image files, ctrl-click the package and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. You should see a folder "Masters" inside, and their you should find all the master image files, grouped by year and month.

  • How can I import AVCHD files from my hard drive?

    - How can I work with .mts files from my Sony camera that I dragged from the camera to a folder on my computer. If I understand it well, if I import the files with a Log and Transfer, they will be converted to another format.
    - do they lose quality with the Log and Transfer conversion?
I want to erase my sony camera hard disk but do not want to lose the original files, that is why I ask.

    Hi -
In order to use the files from your camera easily (without 3rd party software) you need to not only drag the mts files, but the ENTIRE DIRECTORY STRUCTURE of the camera storage to your hard disk drive. Many people find it most convenient to use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the camera storage media, and keep the disk image on their hard disk, available for re-use at any time.
The additional folders that are present on the camera storage give necessary and valuable information to Final Cut as to how to "unpack" the extremely compressed video files. Without these files as guides and instructions, it becomes a much more difficult process.

  • HT201250 can I back up files from one hard drive to the other hd using time machine?

I would like to back up my files automatically from one hard drive to another skipping the computer backup. If anyone knows anything on how to set it up, I would like your help
    Thanks!
    Ruta

If you want to copy one external disk to another external disk, and you want an exact copy, then you might consider Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.  Either of which will make an exact duplicate of the disk.
If you wish to have Time Machine include an external disk as part of your normal Time Machine backups, that means just including the external disk as part of your Time Machine backups.
If you mean run a One-Off backup of the external drive to another external drive using Time Machine, I would go with CCC or SuperDuper.
If you could give some more details about what you are trying to do, how often you want to do this, what kind of information is on the drive being backed up, how often the data is being changed and thus how often you want to do this disk to disk backup, whether you want to have the incremental backups offered by Time Machine, or if you just want a copy, and anything else you can think to tell us about your situation and the problem you are trying to solve.

  • Can I recover lost data from my hard disk?

I went to Software Update and downloaded all necessary files. When I finished the message said that it couldn't load the Java update. I restarted the computer, the apple showed in the middle of the screen and then it went to a circle with a bar through it, a bit like a no smoking sign. I restarted again but still nothing. I sent it off to the computer tech and he reloaded the original disks but all my photos and documents are gone. Can something be done to recover the files? Nothing shows up in Finder..

    Hi,
*"I sent it off to the computer tech and he reloaded the original disks but all my photos and documents are gone."*
If the tech erased and reinstalled the Mac OS X, then those files are gone. But if an Archive and Install was done, then there should be a "Previous System folder" and your files might be there but no guarantees. *You need to contact the repair tech and find out exactly what was done*.
From now on, back your files up so you can avoid this happening in the future.

  • Is it possible to recover .fcp files from a reformatted drive?

Somehow — I still don't know exactly how this happened, but it appears to be my fault, and I feel like a complete moron for letting it get to this — in the process of reformatting a buggy drive with several FCP 7 projects and media on them, I managed to reformat BOTH the original drive and the back-up drive, thus losing all of the content. I'm now trying to figure out if it is possible to recover as much as possible from the drive so that whatever was on the drive is not a total loss.
I have done a scan with Wondershare Data recovery, which gave me a list of files that it could recover, but aparently it cannot recognize .fcp files, meaning that the media can be recovered (albeit with changed names and a lost file structure), but the project itself can't.
I am now attempting a scan with Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery, but it will be quite a while before I can find out if it sees the .fcp files.
If this doesn't work, I was hoping that someone might know of software that would recognize a .fcp file, which would be a big step closer to as much of a recovery as possible.
Hard drive is a 2TB G-Drive, connected through FireWire 800.
    Thanks a lot.

I had a drive do a graceful swan dive and used an app called FileSalvage to recover the contents before it went totally bad. They were williing to work with me to craft the software to find file types that weren't in their standard database. It worked moderately well.
I thought long and hard about spending the money to send that drive to a data recovery firm (with no guarantee that they'd get more off it that was useable) and decided to spend the same amount on some good single malt. Didn't do much for data recovery but I was much happier.
    Good luck,
    x

  • How can I open encrypted files from a flash drive?

I moved transferred files from my work PC to a flash drive and had to encrypt them using Credant.  I know the password but can't find a way to decrypt the files on my mac...

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

  • Recovering single file from old Time Machine Backup

I see many questions/answers that almost address my issue, but not quite, so I'm starting a new post. If this has been answered somewhere and I missed it feel free to just refer me to the correct post!
I recently had to do a full System Restore from a Time Machine backup. The good news is that it worked beautifully and I'm using my iMac like nothing ever happened. When Time Machine tried to run (post restore), it said I didn't have enough space on my external drive. Okay, based on other posts here I see that it won't just continue from the old TM backups and it's starting "anew"...got it.
The old TM backups must still be on that drive because it shows 144GB USED and 100GB AVAIL of my 250GB external drive. Okay, again based on other posts I know that I could just wipe the drive clean and start fresh...BUT...
I restored to my TM backup of 8/24....now I realize that there are one or two files that I at some point stopped having TM backup and now I want to get them back (the whole point of TM, right?)...I figured since it's "holding" that space on my external drive, the old backups are intact and I just need a way to get to them to pull them back to my restored system, then start TM from scratch.
I can't get at the old TM backups. I've tried:
    1) Using the "Browse other Time Machine Backups..." feature. It doesn't see the old TM backup...sees the drive, but nothing on it.
    2) Browsing the drive in "Finder"...nothing shows up...just the attempted NEW backup.
    3) Connecting the external drive to an entirely different Mac and trying to browse the disk in Finder OR use the Browse other Time Machine Backups...still nothing.
So I have a 250GB drive that shows 144GB used, but no way to even view what that is....am I out of luck? Or would something in DiskUtility or a 3rd party software (DiskWarrior) help in this situation?
Is there any way to go pull one or two files from my old TM backup?

Exactly Glenn....I did nothing to the hard drive after the "restore from Time Machine Backup"...
I've never used the Migration Assistant...have to look into that.
I didn't want to be argumentative since I was the relative newbie asking for help, but I HAVE to believe that if I didn't write over the files (i.e. reformat the drive), AND the Finder is recognizing that there are 144 GB USED, the files must be there, untouched....
The urgency isn't there for me anymore, I've already re-created the one doc I wanted to recover and the other file was my Windows XP virtual machine file...(I didn't want to have to re-install Windows from scratch - but I did)....so maybe this is a good time to "play" with that drive while I can afford to lose everything on it!
