2007 iMac runs slow with beachball

just updated from snow leopard to yosemite. IMac now is very slow and beachball spins constantly. iPhoto was very slow before but will now not run. Has 2 x 1 gb of ram but these are both nearly full. If I upgrade them for 2 gb each will that solve problem or is it something more sinister?

Have you run any "cleaning" or "optimizing" apps on your Mac recently? Or installed any antivirus software? They can mess up things big time.
Download the free MacTracker application to see how much memory your model can use. Some models can use 6 GB when Apple only will certify 4 GB because they haven't tested it with that amount. Some suppliers have. Crucial.com is a very reputable supplier of Mac RAM.

Brand new iMac running slow with only 3% of HD used!

I just purchased a new iMAC 21.5" with 2.9 i5 and 8GB memory and literally have yet to add any programs except AI, ID and PS and its running very poorly. This is my first MAC and i'm very disappointed. I purchased this computer for school where I am getting my BS in media arts. I use an older 27" iMAC at school using all the same programs and more and my new computer doesn't hold a candle to its usability. For example, opening up the programs takes what I consider to be a long time being that there is nothing on the HD. While in PS, and trying to edit, without even having multiple windows open, or multiple layers, it will not instantly edit in the preview window. If and when it decides to edit the computer, then it prompts the color wheel buffer. I specifically told the guy at the store exactly what I would be using it for - to only run the Adobe programs and CC. Since owning the iMAC, I have updated the suggested programs from the apple store and had the most recent OS updates.
The model number of the computer: A1418 any help would be greatly appreciated! If I don't have the correct model I need - I will gladly make the unsaid large retail giant take it back, one way or another.

Why does my imac run slow with mac os x v10.6.7

Since I installed Snow Leopard, our iMac has been freezing up and running slow. Does anyone have any idea about how to fix this?

G5 iMac Runs Slower with OS 10.5 than it did with 10.4

My older iMac is a first generation 20" G5 with 1.8GHZ G5 processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD of which 75.6 GB is free space.
Ever since upgrading from OS 10.4 to OS 10.5 it runs noticeably slower. The HD was replaced within the last 12 months so I don't think it's a symptom of disk fragmentation (if that even matters much anymore). Also, in the Energy Saver control panel, the processor performance is set to highest.
What, if anything, can I do to restore the iMac to its former peppyness?
Currently it's being used mostly for email and web surfing.
Should I consider "downgrading" back to OS 10.4?

Try vacuuming the air vents, emptying trash, using [whatsize|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/44018] to see what applications you can delete. Also, empty the browser cache frequently and look in Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor to see what application is using a large amount of either memory and/or CPU.

250 GB SATA Disk shows 154.58 GB free of 249.2 GB
I have been having the following issues with my iMac since upgrading to Mavericks, and they've persisted through to Yosemite...
Issues:
intermittent "data crunching" sound that will last for up to 10 minutes, causing active applications to stall
if I drag the cursor over the dock early during startup, the computer will freeze
if I launch an application early during startup, the computer will freeze
Mail occasionally "re-counts" and reloads the messages in my inboxes, causing Mail to stall or freeze
Any ideas? (If it's recommended that I provide more information gathered from Terminal, I'll need clear instructions.)

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Your model has upgradable memory. Install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

IMHO, you have way too many things launching at startup. Figure out what you can manaully launch latter when needed and turn them off in System Preferences > USeres & Groups >Login items tab.
The "page-outs" for RAM is starting to creap up indicating more RAM could help. If you don't want to buy RAM, removing some apps from the log-in items can help performance.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

Does it do better if allowed to cool off for a couple of hours?
What do you see if you hold Option or alt key at bootup?
Does it boot from the install disc holding c key at bootup?

my mac is also running very slowly with that spinning beach ball constantly making its unwanted presence felt. i've tried the following so far:
- safe boot
- cleared items from Users / Groups | Login
- checked Activity Monitor to remove any processes in red
- run disk verify
- reinstalled the OS X

IMac running slow (Etrecheck in post)

Problem description:
iMac running slow, Finder becomes unresponsive. Over the last 5 years I think I've installed and removed so many programs that I've left OSX a mess. I know enough about computers to confidently make mistakes. The memory and cpu are not maxed out in Activity Monitor, yet I'm getting beach balled.

Imac runs slow

My imac runs slow and constantly has the pinwheel up "thinking". It is only 7 months old and I dont use it for much. (pics Internet word email) Any ideas?

Try this this helped with me resolving the pinwheel problem:
Run First Aid in Mountain Lion's Disk Utility.
Went to Applications
Went to disc utility
Clicked on Hard Drive on left side of window
Clicked on Repair Disc Button
Ran for approximately 14 minutes,
While it was running noticed on one of the windows, "repairing, resolved"
And now tried copied and pasting from a website I had copied from in the past to see if that was a problem.
No pinwheel this time.

Mid-2007 iMac Running Mavericks Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Install

How do I go about installing a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (OEM) partition on a mid-2007 iMac running Mavericks?
Apple says that 64-bit Windows 7 isn't supported by my model iMac, but I know for a fact that other people have gotten it to work. I'm just a little unclear on how exactly to do it. In any case, I made the mistake of buying two copies of Windows 7 64-bit under the assumption that they would install just fine on my iMac and MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro is from 2007 as well), so I need to get this working.
What version of Boot Camp should I use? What version support drivers should I download? Apple says that Boot Camp 5.1, which is what I have, is incompatible with my iMac, and it says the same thing for every driver download that supports 64-bit versions of Windows 7, but would it be correct to say that this "incompatibility" is only the case if I don't first modify my Windows 7 installation disc according to the instructions in the attached link?
There is a Windows XP partition on my MacBook Pro, so I figure I can get on it to modify the installation disc before attempting a 64-bit Windows 7 install on the iMac.
