2007 Macbook pro kernel panic, hard drive problem?

Hello!
I've been trying to sort this for a few weeks now, and I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the situation.
Problem:
I have a 2007 15" MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15/2.2/2GB/120GB) which a few weeks ago suddenly died on me. It has what I believe is called a kernel panic. On startup a grey screen falls down with a box saying that I need to restart the computer.
I took it to my local apple store where they booted an OSX (not sure which) from an external drive (I think it was using a firewire cable). The MacBook appeared to work fine from this external hard drive, but when disk utility was run on the internal hard drive, the disk utility eventually froze.
Based on this info, the guy there deduced (fairly reasonably I suppose) that the problem must be my hard drive, and replacing my hard drive should solve this. So  bought a
Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB,Internal,7200 RPM,6.35 cm (2.5").
The equipment I now have to try and get my MacBook to work:
- An iMac 2.7 Ghz i5 (8gb Ram) running Mac OSX 10.7.5
- A replacement hard drive for the MacBook (Seagate Momentus)
- A SATA HArd drive USB docking station
- A 500gb iOmega Hard drive with Firewire 800 cables
- The 2 original install disks for Tiger that came with the MacBook Pro
- A working .dmg of retail snow leopard
What I have tried so far:
I have formatted the replacement hard drive correctly (GUID) for Mac OSX. If I turn the macbook pro on with the new hard drive in, a folder icon with a question mark in it flashes in the middle of the screen... If I put in the original install disk, it starts to read it (apple logo and spinning wheel) and then eventually kernel panics. When I hold option on start up, the 'Mac OSX Install Disk 1" is the only option available (the cd/dvd drive must be working if it recognises the disk here i assume?) but when I select it, it spins for a bit, then kernel panics.
My next approach was to try and create an installable and bootable version of an OSX on an external hard drive. (I have tried this with both the original Tiger install disk, and with the leopard.dmg)... I followed the readily available instructions online on how to do this, and was able to restore the first partion on the external hard drive with the OSX install disk image.... The problem I have then face is installing the osx onto the second partition.
This seems to be because my newish iMac/OSX wont let me boot any OSX installer CD/firewire or otherwise, other than the original operating system for the iMac.
I thought this wouldn't matter, as I would be able to run the installer when I plugged the iOmega into my MacBook pro. The problem I now have is that the Macbook wont recogninise the iOmega when it is connected by firewire. It will only recognise it when connected by USB, but when I try and run the installer, it spins for a while then kernel panics. I believe this is because MacBook pros of this age will only run OSX Install/bootable through firewire.
So... hardware wise, could this be anything other than a problem with the hard drive? As we know the MacBook pro will boot from an external drive...
If anyone has actually managed to read this far into this incredibly boring, waffling description of my problem, I am already grateful, and if anyone can give any help or advice at all regarding this, I will be eternally in your debt....

That's the firmware telling you it can't find the/a bootable OS.

Your machines firmware was updated, it will only now boot from 10.6 either on a bootable USB thumb drive or via the white 10.6.3 retail disks you can get by calling Apple by phone.

True. If the iMac could boot from the 10.6.3 disk, then you could install 10.6.3 via Firewire Target Disk Mode onto the other Mac if for instance the Superdrive didn't work.
MacBook pros of this age will only run OSX Install/bootable through firewire.

Just order the 10.6.3 white retail disk from Apple via phone, forget 10.4 and 10.5 as they are not getting updates anyway.
However you can extract iLife from the 10.4/10.5 machine specific disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft.

    I've got a 2.4Ghz 15" MacBook Pro (model MB470LL/A). I've been having so many problems with upgrading the hard drive that I'm at my wits end. First, I swapped out the stock 250gb hd for a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500gb. Only later did I find out a lot of people are having problems with it. My problem was slightly different...it would work fine for random periods of time, sometimes hours. Then the system would seemingly freeze (even iTunes stopped playing and the menu bar clock stopped running), then after maybe 15 seconds or so, it'd start up again. This started driving me nuts when it became more frequent. I tried all the different fixes from various message boards, to no avail. I even tried reinstalling OS X. No change.
    So I threw that in an external enclosure (where it's been working fine since) and bought a Samsung Spinpoint M7E HM501II instead. The system seemed to crash more often, so I ran a disk scan (Drive Genius 3) on it. The scan kept either choking at a certain point and/or kicked up bad block errors like crazy. HOWEVER, when I put the Samsung in an external enclosure and ran the disk scan again, it finished without an error. I can replicate this at will.
    I took it in to the local Genius Bar, where they ran more tests and determined it was a bad drive. I RMA'd it and got a new one. Same problem with the scans. And again, it runs and scans perfectly fine in the external enclosure.
    So now I'm at a loss. I don't want to keep wasting money buying different branded hard drives. Is there some strange problem with my MacBook Pro? I'm thinking there some sort of weird problem with the drive controller or something, and I tried to get the Genius Bar to test that. They claimed they did and found no problem. Do I live with my 250gb drive (I'm only looking to get a bigger drive, not something faster. I need the battery life) or is there anything else I can do?

    Lately there have been quite a few debates on the hard replacement issues with MBP's and from what I have seen they mostly are around the power consumption of the drives being not compatible..

    It's 7200 rpm and a whopping 500GB for 70-80 dollars is quite interesting .

    I believe they are up to 2TB in the 2.5" laptop drives.
    Do a quick google on the brand & model first to see what the reviews are and failure rates.
    I use Hitachi in mine.
    SSD's are also an option for you. These are much faster than the traditional mechanical drives, but also much more expensive & are much smaller in capacity.

  • Macbook Pro running slow - hard drive problem?

    My Macbook Pro has been running really slowly for quite a while. Every once and a while I run Disk Utility and although it is able to repair permissions, sometimes it is unable to repair the disk - I get an error message. Whenever this happens, I reinstall Leopard and the MBP works quickly for a week or two and I am able to repair the disk with Disk Utility, but inevitably it starts slowing down, and finally Disc Utility is unable to repair the disc...so I reinstall again. This cycle has gone on for several months.
    When I run Techtool on it, is says I have four bad blocks.
    Is my hard drive failing? Any other ideas about what the problem might be or how to fix it?

    No, that is the earlier, non-unibody, model, I'm afraid, jaime. The early, non-unibody" MBPs had removable batteries, then came the "unibody" models with removable batteries, and the current ones are unibody with non-removable batteries.
    (A1175 is actually the model of the battery , rather than the computer, by the way, but yours sounds like one of the "first generation" models with a CoreDuo proccesor.)
    If you go to http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Browse/MacBook_Pro you will find links to help you identify your particular model, and to find the instructions for replacing the HD in it.     If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

    Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
    If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

    More then likely that external drive is formatted the Windows NTFS format which Mac OS X can Read but it can not Write to that format. So you would need to copy all the data off that drive, to either a Windows PC or to your Mac, thenn use the Mac to format it for the Mac OS. Which would be Mac Extended (Journaled) with a Partition Table of GUID.
    If you want to use that drive on both Mac and PC then you would need to format it either FAT32 or exFAT.

    Firewire 800 is the fastest and most reliable. Also it's bootable if you hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard.  Not bootable via Airport obviously or if Filevault is used.
    It's only your first clone that's usually takes the longest, it's shorter when it updates as you only do the changes which you can control to keep a pure clone if you wish.

    Depending on the year of the MBP, the hard drive may not be considered a user replaceable item...but you can check the available 1 TB drives at good sources such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com they are great to deal with and have on-line videos showing how to do most installation tasks.

    Hi,
    My powerbook G4 shut down today with a kernel panic and now won't boot up (giving a kernel panic error after reaching the gray screen). The computer has been working fine, though the battery has run down, with the exception of not shutting down properly (I would have to power off manually). I tried various things to fix this (repair permissions, check hard drive, checking logs, etc.), but all those checked out and I could never get it figured out. I have been leaving the computer running because of this and it has been working fine. It is a stock G4 with no peripherals, except for a 1 GB RAM upgrade. The RAM was installed two years ago and tested strenuously with memtest with no issues.
    I did have my hard drive near full, as I didn't realize that this could case severe issues. It's probably too full to do a clean Archive and Install. My fault.
    I have reset my PMU/PRAM, but the computer won't boot up in safe mode or single-user mode. I get the following message at the end of single-user mode:

    Unfortunately, I do not have my backup disks with me right now, as I recently moved (I will have them in a couple weeks).
    There's some data on the computer it would be nice to pull off, but not absolutely essential. So my question is: Does this sound like a hard drive problem or a journal system/file system problem or something else? I hear no strange noises from the drive (the fan is a little noisy, though). What can I do at this point while I wait for my discs to arrive from across country?
    If this is a file problem, I have heard these are difficult to fix or even deal with in terms of data recovery, since the disk won't mount even in firewire target mode. Should I invest in a firewire external drive in order to create a bootable second drive? Purchase DiskWarrior? Create a bootable Linux CD? Any help would be appreciated!

    If you have the original HDD with which the computer was bought you likely have a failed HDD and should have it replaced with a newer, faster and large capacity HDD. The average life of an internal HDD is 3 to 5 years, and although it may not suddenly stop functioning after that performance gradually decreases until the drive fails completely.
    A too full drive can cause serious directory corruption which can in turn lead to data corruption and possible loss, and eventually a crash. You should maintain a minimum of 15% to total disk capacity (5 GB minimum on HDDs of 40 GB or less) as contiguous free space to allow for swap files and directory expansion.
    You should always maintain a current backup of everything you do not wish to lose as even a new HDD can fail suddenly. Using an external firewire drive and making a bootable clone using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner is an excellent way to accomplish this. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has excellent tips on backup strategies.

    I can't copy files from the MacBook into an external hard drive.
    In the 'Get Info' section, it says read-only. However, the hard drive have just been recently bought.
    I had the same problem with our previous hard drive. Although the previous hard drive was 'read-only' I was able to copy and paste files in our old HP laptop.
    What can I do in order to copy and paste files from the MacBook into the hard drive?
    Hard drive = Toshiba
    Capacity = 1TB

    In my last paragraph, I said
    "Note that Windows PCs cannot write natively to an HFS drive, so if you need to exchange files between Mac and PC, we need to talk about different options."
    Windows cannot read Mac Extended (HFS) formatted drives; the Mac cannot write to Windows (NTFS) formatted drives.
    The only formats fully compatible between Mac and PC are FAT32 (largely deprecated) and exFAT. If you need full read-write compatibility between Windows and Mac, and you can erase the drive (ie, it's a new drive or you have confirmed backups), reformat to exFAT using Disk Utility.
    If you have a drive with files on it and you cannot erase them at the moment:
    - if the drive is formatted for the Mac, you can purchase MacDrive for the PC
    - if the drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS), you can purchase Paragon NTFS for the Mac.

    Also can any one recomend a good cheap SSD for my mac, i am looking at the crucial version, it appears to be ok.

  • My Late 2013 Macbook Pro Kernel Panics!

    Hello everyone!
    So I recently bought this macbook pro and i have been having this error with my macbook. So pretty much whenever i try to watch a video in VLC media player or open a program which requires use of the dedicated Gpu my mac panics and restarts. I get the grey screen and then i tap a key to reboot instantly. I've ran the hardware test and have gotten nothing from it. Here is the Log.     Remove "ScreenFlow" and see whether there's an improvement.
    Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
    Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
    I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
    Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
    Back up all data before making any changes.
    You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
    If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
