2008.007 Security Update Will Not Boot - 2 different MacBooks

I installed the 2008.007 update on a 15" first gen MacBook Pro and an 11 month old 17" Santa Rosa 2.4ghz MacBook Pro today.
Both rebooted successfully the first time and we could login but on a reboot or second user login we got a peculiar blank blue screen with the circular 'wait' icon (you know, the animated segmented circle) appearing every seven seconds or so along with a responsive cursor and then disappearing for 4-5 seconds before repeating the cycle.
Have booted each up in target mode & repaired disk, used the install DVD and repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM, etc. all with no effect.
Examining system.log in single user or target modes (which both work fine) shows this message which is very concerning:

What next? I do not want to do yet another install. I feel like I'm back in the late 90s, marvelling at Windows 95 and gradually doing re-installs more and more frequently. I'm up to 3-4 a year so far.
Please help. If you point me to one of the standard Apple 'what to do if you have problems', please don't bother, I've done all that. Both systems were fully patched and fully functioning before application, reboot was not interrupted, repairs were applied pre-update, etc. etc. etc.
M.

So I create the folder and this is what's created:

  • 2014-005 Security Update will not install

2014-005 Security Update will not install "encountered unexpected error" message at end of install routine

    Thanks for the quick response.
I had already done that when it didn't load install completely from the app store notice.  It goes all the way to the final part of the installation including moving things in place etc, but a the very last moment it says "Installation failure - An unexpected error has occurred. Contact your software vendor."
I've never had any kind of situation like this with any installs, updates, or anything.  Everything else is completely up to date.  Steve.

  • MacBook crashed during update - will not boot

My wife was using iTunes and was prompted to do seven updates on our MacBook. She was told to hold in the power button during the update, and the machine reset.
Now the machine will not boot and just accesses the CD/DVD drive over and over.
Does anyone here have any ideas?

Alright, I was able to fix it.
I had to download the Firmware Restoration image for Intel based MacBooks onto my Windows XP machine. I then used a demo of the program 'UltraISO' to burn the .dmg image.
The macbook was turned on, the disc inserted. Then the macbook was powered off, and powered back on. This time I held in the power button until the long tone and gray screen appeared.
The folks at the Apple Store had no other suggestion other than paying $183 for AppleCare. They need to spend less time telling customers how reliable Macs are and a little more time burning copies of this restoration disc!

  • Leopard update will not boot HD, 2nd HD or show anything on the desktop?

G5 Dual 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM - 250 GB main HD, 2nd HD 500 GB internal used for storage only. Running 10.4.10 before Leopard
Note: I checked my permissions and verified my HD before installing Leopard. I did not do a clean install, I did an update. I'm going to buy a new desktop soon, so I opted for the quick and dirty. Chose to keep old settings during upgrade.
The install seemed to go OK. I got through the registration part OK (it was all filled in automatically) and connected to Apple. Then on the restart, it would only load as far as the Menu on the screen. It will not mount the 2 internal Hard drives I have in the machine and it will not show anything that was on the desktop before. Only spinning color wheel for 5 hours. I can get the Dock up, even turned off the Hiding. Went to the gray Apple (old blue one) and called up the system preferences. Now the System Preferences name is stuck in the Menu.  Had to force quit the machine by holding in the power button.
On several restarts, I tried to dump the P-Ram, also a start up in safety mode (which didn't work - holding down the Shift Key on startup). Nothing seems to work.
The wierd thing is, I can see the Hard drive and my 2nd HD (internal storage drive) on my other computers. So I'm backing up everything to them and an external 1 TB HD I had connected to the G5.
I also booted from the Leopard DVD after I had this proplem and went to Disk Utilities and verified the Disk was OK and the Disk permissions were OK. Also periodiacally I get a window that says: Apple Event timed out. The name of the window says: .rvncs, whatever that means.
Something tells me this is not good.
Any ideas by anyone on how I can get my desktop back and have my HD's mount?
I really don't want to erase my HD, just too much stuff to loose.
Yes I know, you have never really been able to just update a Mac OS successfully, only clean installs have ever seemed to work.
Thanks and any help will be appreciated,
    Jim

  • Office 7 security updates will not install and can not uninstall Office 7

I am running Office 7 in Windows 7 Home Premium.  I have three security updates that will not install.  I tried to uninstall Office, but the uninstall program stops and says it can not continue.  I have tried putting the Office 7 DVD in
the computer and reinstall Office 7, but install will not run.  I have been working on this for two months.

    Hi,
When referring office 7 do you mean office 2007?
For update issue, windowsupdate.log will give us some clue.
But I think the file is corrupt since you cannot uninstall or reinstall it. Kb 928218 may help us here:

  • After software update, will not boot up past blue screen

I just did a software update and after restarting, the computer will not go past the blue screen with the spinning wheel at the bottom. Please help! I've tried everything under troubleshooting in the manual. Any other ideas?

Thanks, I was able to fix my problem. It was a software issue. Luckily I did a pretty good backup...I just forgot to back up 2 of my most used applications: iPhoto and Appleworks. They were on my laptop before I did the erase and install, and now they are gone. I thought they would be on the iBook install discs or the OSx software install disc...but no. They had to come from somewhere and I just cannot find them! I know I didn't pay for them. Any thoughts on where they may be? I am so mentally exhausted from these computer woes...I can't think anymore!!! Please help me!

  • Security Update Will Not Install on Mac Pro (Leopard 10.5.4)

    Hi:
I am having some trouble trying to install the last security update on my MacPro. The process gets stuck on the “configuring installation“ part. Tried safe boot and the same thing happened. The progress bar continues glowing but there is no progress at all. Then I have to force shut down.

You tried this via Software Update or standalone?

  • Security update will not load on my lombard's mce HD

Have lombard with 512meg/80gig(10.3.9/9.2.2/vpc 6.1. 10.3.9 b/c I need working scsi. All works aok. Also have mce expansion bay hd 40 gig for 10.4.5, which has worked flawlessly until last 2 newest security updates, which refuse to load always saying "error installing update". This is the first problem I've had with this setup since 10.4 with all previous updates working...
    What's up?
FYI: same two security updates worked fine on 10.3.9.

The Lombard does not support 10.4.5. You may be able to install it with XPostfacto, but it would be akin to putting a jet engine on a chariot. 10.3.9 is the maximum operating system supported by Apple on that machine. Built-in Firewire, means built-in by Apple. Many SCSI peripherals now have USB and Firewire comparable versions. If you really need 10.4, it is time to get a newer machine. Here's my FAQ on migrating to Mac OS X, which explains what Macs support which operating systems among other things:

  • G5, broken from last update, will not boot Leopard Disc

    Hello, I'd appreciate any help.
This is in regards to a Dual 2.0 Ghz G5 Powermac purchased in May of 2005.
After updating to 10.5.5, the Powermac stopped loading Leopard. The standard gray screen with the apple would turn to a blue screen, then, unlike anything its ever done before, would then change into a lighter blue blank screen, and remain blank.
I assume a reinstall of Leopard would solve the situation, but when I hold down 'c' and try to boot on the disc, it still goes into that light blue screen (still boots from the HDD).
Instead of the standard apple USB keyboard, I use a third party RF wireless keyboard. Would this prevent me from booting into the Leopard repair disc?
I don't have a USB keyboard on me, I'd have to borrow/buy one.
Anyone else have an issue like this before? The machine has been in heavy use for over three years now and it has never given me any problems.

    Hi JohnnyO;
I hope you have a backup because it sounds very much like you might have lost your disk.
It is possible that your system has managed to get itself into a state where it is not capable of reading the wireless keyboard any longer. Beg, borrow or stealing one would be good idea to see if you can get any further.
If you are able to boot it from the install media that came with it, I would suggest you start with AHT to check out your hardware first.
Let us know what you find.

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

  • Installed todays security update, computer will not boot, down

I installed todays security update. now my G3 600mhz 14" iBook, running 10.3.9, will not boot.
I have had several symptoms throughout the day. A couple of times it sat there for about an hour with a blank screen. It came up several times with the message to type "mac-boot" ( I may be remembering the syntax wrong) I tried that, I also tried typing "shut-down" at that point.
Later it came up to my background screen bout would do nothing and go no further. Now it is siting there with a OS 9 folder icon in the middle of the screen and sometimes the icon alternates between a face and a question mark in the middle of the icon.

    Robert,
I sympathize with your plight. I had a similar problem with my G4 AGP (Sawtooth). Like a dummy, I installed Security Update 2006-004. Upon reading posts about Apple updates on this board, it seem that the knlowledgeable ones wait until the unsuspecting ones walk on the landmines that Apple builds into the upgrades before trying it themselves.
I had exactly the same problems that you describe. Since I believe that my G4 has an extended warrantee, I called Apple Phone Support. The gentleman after listining to my plight, told me that he could not help me because my Mac was a "VINTAGE" model, no longer supported by Apple. How is that for an answer. I guess that now that Apple switched to Intel, all Motorola chips become "persona non-grata".
Anyway, I remember that something like this happened to me some years back with another "upgrade". I believe that basically, the problem is due to the fact that Apple does not make provisions for third party products installed in a Mac. Last time, it was the video card (ATI) that had to be removed in order for the upgrade to work. This time, I had to remove my 2 GHz. Giga Design CPU and put back the measly 400 MHz. Apple CPU. Then I was able to boot normally. I then re-installed the Giga drivers and everything went back to normal. Since I am getting old, and it is recommended for persons of my age to engage in mental exercises, I believe Apple is trying to help me by having my brain work overtime (not to mention the 5 terror-filled hours I spent to resolve the problem.
I suspect the update writes to or resets your PRAM or other non-volatile memory. Does your G3 iBook have any non-Apple components? If so, I suggest you remove it or them. Beyond that, I cannot help you, except to suggest that you reset the PRAM.
I now have transferred most of my data to a fast, trouble-free (relatively) PC. Since in the future, all Macs with have Intel chips, there will be no reason for me, after about 30+ "vintage" years to buy Apple. Of course, just as Apple touts that its OS can run on a PC, PC owners will (are already) running Mac OS on their PC.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update

My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
    Any suggestions?

Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
