2008 24" iMac screen freeze issue?  Is there a recall?

Hello, I have a late 2008 24" imac 2.8ghz ati 2600 running mavericks, sometimes i get solid colors or rainbow paterns or other digital artifacts that freeze and require a hard boot. Is this a recall issue?  there seems to be many with this problem, no kext work, Clean installed downgrading OS, pram flashing or any other solution seems to work, it doesnt seem related to heat and happens seemingly at random whether iunder load or not.  It's done this since I got it but I was stationed overseas and nothing could be done at the time, of course now I'm a full time student on a fixed GI stipend and can't replace my computer.  If so many people have this issue, and it appears to be hardware/manufacture related, why can I find nothing about a recall?

  • Mac Pro Screen Freezing Issue with NVIDIA 8800 GT too

There were lots of entry in threads, where the screen freezing issue was described (disorted screen with strange lines, only reboot helps). Nearly all cases seem to be related to the ATI 2600 card.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1358062&tstart=30
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1365277&tstart=0
I opened this new thread to show, that this problems occurs not only for the ATI card but for the NVIDIA 8800 card, too.
My MacPro was delivered 8 days ago and was running without any problems. But all of a sudden, I got that screen freeze. And it wasn't the first time, I was heavely working 2-3 hours with that computer.
In total, 2 screen freezes showed on my computer. The first one during working with the computer. The second one during booting into MacOS X. The screen freeze occured during the boot phase with the grey screen and the spinning wheel.
    My configuration:
    MacPro 2.8, Dual Quad Core
    6 GB RAM
3 harddisks, 1 standard from Apple, 2 Samsung with 750GB
    MacOS 10.5.2
    Formac 20" Monitor
Perhaps others have this problem, too? Than we should emphasize, that this is not an ATI related problem.

I've actually been having the freezing issue for a while now but I didn't have the know-how to troubleshoot it (PC tech trying to support the only Mac lab in the building).
MacPro will freeze randomly (no trend in time, system strain, or open programs). The mouse will operate but will not interact with anything.
    Specs:
    MacPro - Model 1,1
    Dual Core Xeon 2.66
    2gb RAM
    nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
    Mac OS 10.4.11
The machine always has 2 displays connected to it so the workaround that was discussed for the ATI 2600 doesn't apply. I had 1 display connected here in my shop and it froze for that as well.

  • My iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down my screen

Hi, my iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down the screen and has a large black square in the centre saying "You must restart your computer by pressing the power button and then pressing it again to restart" or words to that effect in English and about 4 or 5 other languages.  I find this happens more frequently when I try to stream movies or tv shows.  It also happened when I was trying to download a couple of tv shows from iTunes.
It also sometimes makes a wierd sound a kind of loud noise like a record stuck in a groove.  This has happend many times since upgrading to Lion.  I hear a lot of people on here talking about their screens going completely black and not responding.  I believe that mine has only gone black a couple of times and I couldn't wake it up from "sleep mode" with the mouse or keyboard.  I don't know if this is also happening to other people, but my bluetooth keyboard keeps disconnecting all the time since the upgrade as well, it's driving me nuts!!  Plus my wifi will show that it is fully operational, however, I can't use the internet when I wake my computer from sleep mode.  I have to click on wifi and turn wifi off then on again before i can use it.
Is Apple going to come out with a fix or are we going to eternally suffer indefinitley.

    Hi Eric,
I don't know why it didn't work before, but here is the most recent errol log.  It crashed again about an hour later.  If there is a solution, i would greatly appreciate knowing what it is because I can't enjoy using my computer anymore because of these constant crasahes.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Early 2008 24" imac ram upgrade issues

Hi everyone.  Hope you guys can help diagnose a problem I have with my imac.
It's an early 2008 24" imac with 3.06 Ghz processor and an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GS 512 graphics card.
After buying Empire: Total War I thought it best to upgrade the 2GB RAM to 4GB, and purchased 2x2GB sticks 800 Mhz 6400 DDR2 SDRAM.
When they arrived I put them in and the system booted up normally.  I could surf the net ok, but when it came to watching a video on youtube full screen, or playing a game, it would cope for 30secs-1min and then the spinning coloured wheel would show.  I'd then hear noises that sound like a cd trying to eject then the system would hang.  One of three things would then happen:
    - it would automatically reboot showing the multi-lingual startup message that the system was not shut down properly
    - a grey blank screen would appear and not change
    - the grey start up screen would appear with the Apple logo and spinning circle, which would then stop spinning and not change.
If I manually rebooted I just get a black screen and can only hear the fans softly spinning.
I've tried swapping the ram sticks but get the same as above.  It will boot and work normally with either one of the 2GB ram sticks installed on it's own.  It will also work normally with the original 2x1GB sticks installed again.
I don't get the 3 beep warning at startup.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening?  Would the graphics card be the reason for this issue?
I'm not sure if these are related but a few weeks ago I noticed that the brightness would randomly change from normal to half-brightness then back to normal.  These would change every few minutes or so and isn't dependent on what programmes I have running.
I've also recently noticed that the top and back of the imac is getting quite warm to the touch and no don't leave the system running when not in use.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
EDIT: you won't find iStat Pro at BDAqua's link any longer. (No longer supported by the developer, and not completely compatible with Mountain Lion, but most of its features should still be working.) It's here
    https://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Do you have a link to the exact RAM you bought?
That grapics card is known to be a problem, but the brightness issue seems more like the Backlight or Inverter.

  • IMac screen freezes

Hi my iMac late 2009 27 inch has started to have a fault.
Randomly the screen freezes with little pixelated blocks. The mouse cursor still moves around but I can not click onto anything. I have to pull the power lead out to turn off.
Its running osx 10.8.4 and is a intel 2.66ghx i5 model with Radeon HD4850

The GPU is one of the cheapest parts of your computer, so that repair may cost between $100 and $200
But isn't the GPU a part of the logic board? So it'll be a logic board replacement then..? or is 2009 different?

  • 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

I don't know if this is just coincidence or not, but since updating my iMac to 10.6.3 it keeps on crashing. On 3 separate occasions today, whilst using my Mac the screen has gone completely black with thin white lines down it.....see pic below:

The fans and hard disk are still running but it will not respond to any keyboard or mouse presses - I simply have to turn it off by holding the power button in.
It will then restart as usual.
Anyone got any ideas? Do you think that if I was to re-install Mac OS X from my original install disk it could solve the issue?
    Thanks
    Darren

Experiencing the exact same issue - usually when using iTunes or Safari.
Screen becomes garbled with junk video artifacts, network connection drops and then the only thing I can do is move the mouse around. I cannot interact with the screen at all. The only "fix" is to do a hard power-down via the power button on back.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the freeze - it is not reproducible in any timeframe or activity.
I attempted the following to rectify:
    • Reformat
    • Reinstall 10.6.0 from SL DVD
    • Created entirely new user
    • Repaired permissions via Disk Utility on first login
    • Restarted
    • Updated OS to 10.6.3 from Combo update
    • Repaired permissions via Disk Utility again
    • Restarted three times to build up caches
    • System froze as before after roughly 25 minutes of web browsing and browsing iTunes Store
This points to a major graphics update bug - there is not other explanation. I have never had this kind of freeze in the two + years that I have owned this machine.
It has happened 6 times since 10.6.3 was installed.

  • IMAC screen freezes and goes blue....

this just started yesterday - I did not add any programs or update any software recently. I have since added Norton and scanned for viruses.
PROBLEM: my system freezes and the screen goes blue. It does not "wake" back up right away and after it goes blue a few times, it stays blue and I have to hard boot. If I leave the system off for about an hour, I'll get a few hours out of it before this happens.
DIAG: As stated above, I checked for viruses. I also ran all available diagnostics, and am fresh out of new ideas. Since I can't open my iMac without voiding the warrantee, I can't check for any possible burst or bulging capacitors. I disconnected all perperials and still have the same issue.
HYPOTHESIS: I am heavily leaning toward a hardware problem, but before I take the trip to the Apple store, I wanted to reach out to the forum to see if anyone else has had this problem?
This is an early 2006 Intel based 20" iMac that I have been running (24x7) since late August 2006. I never had an issue with my first iMac (pre-Intel).
    HELP!!!

    silentpartner,
Unless your issues match a known problem, (wouldn't appear too likely if no result from the Apple Hardware Test) before Apple will accept your iMac for hardware repairs, you'll have to prove it's not a software issue by reinstalling the OS. FWIW, if it's a hardware issue and in particular if the hard drive needs replacing, you'll want to back up your important data anyway, prior to turning it in for any repair.

  • IMac Screen Freezing

Over the last 2 days our Mac has decided to freeze like the rest of Britain!
There is no menu bar at top of screen, though the dashboard is displayed.
Am having to do a hard shutdown and re-boot.
I have upgraded my software online as promted in the last 2 weeks.
I am not a competent Mac user and need help!!

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Hard shutdowns can also cause this. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.7.2 update - pls help!

I have read that many of you had this problem with an earlier update. However this has been since Lion was
first installd on muy computer. I thought it would go away after the 10.7.2 uppdate bit that is not the case.
I have to restart my computer after it has been in sleep mode 2,3 and sometimes 4 times. It just goes black
and will not respond to anything. I have to reset the computer by pressing the on/off switch.
This is starting to anoing me big time. I have a MacBook Pro (2010) where Lion runs fine.
Is it so that Mac thinks that my iMac 2008 is out of date?
Processor  3,06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memmory  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Grafic  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
    Program  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

Thanks for all the help on this matter! Really good to know that help is out there!
I just got my Mac back from repair. They found that one of the RAM was defect.

  • 2006 24" iMAC screen smear issue

I have a 24" iMAC from mid 2006 that has been working great. The HD went out a couple months ago and I had it replaced at the apple store. After I got the machine back I noticed some faint streaks running from the right middle to the middle lower of the screen. The tech at the apple store said it was burn in, but it wasn't there before the HD swap. It seems to be on the inside of the screen, is there a clear cover panel over the actual LCD screen, or is what you can touch the LCD. For all the world it looks like a smear left by a cleaning rag. Screen shot will not show it but I did take a photo of it. Anyone know what this might be. A photo of the lines can be seen here http://idisk.mac.com/silverxrider/Public/screen.JPG

  • Screen freeze issue

    Hello,
I am using XPERIA  Z1 ,which i got this April 2014.
    1. The issue i face is the phone gets extremely warm on use of more than 1-2 applications.which is also the case on playing a game.I cannot hold at times due to the heat at the back of phone.
    2. Moreover I face the freezing of screen completely when i use applications like skype and FB messenger together. Its this bad that i have to perform a long press on the power button to reboot, having no other screen touch icon working!
This freeze and getting warm seem  a great disadvantage and pain to my invested money and time.
    Please help with this problem!!?
P.S   I contacted customer care (Anna nagar ,chennai ),and they guided me to perform an software update to resolve the issue, but that did help me with the 2 issues.

Boot the phone in safe mode, see if the same freezing occurs:

I had the freezing thing on .681,but now on .757 it works fine.

if you have any ideas on how this could be fixed please comment.

Did you try installing the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 3.0? You can download it here:

It reportedly addresses "a graphics issue that may cause an iMac to hang under certain conditions."

  • MSI R9 290 Gaming 4GB Black Screen/Freeze Issue

    Hello All,
I just received my new MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming. 4GB. It freezes/locks up upon booting into windows. If I do not install the drivers. It does not lock up. As soon as I install any driver, it goes to a black screen, and locks up. I have read the forums, and see a few other people have reported this issue. I have tried the following AMD Catalyst drivers 14.7(beta), 14.1, 13.2. All still have the same issue. I have tried installing the driver manually(via device manager) with out the CCC. I have also tried the native drivers from MSI's website. still same issue. Not sure what else to do here. I am using a CoolerMaster RS-850Watt power supply. Windows 8.1 Pro. Here are the rest of the details of my setup. Anyone know of a fix for this issue?

Hey guys, thanks for trying to help. I ended up going back to the retailer. memory express. They determined that the card was DOA. They exchanged it and provided me a new card. New card has no issues. thank you for the help.

So i've had my phone since this past monday (9/17/07) and every once in awhile the screen will go slightly black (still backlit but blank) when i wake the phone from it's auto lock or when I got to lock it. Also sometimes when I switch apps it do this or hesitate. Is this an issue? if so is anyone esle having it? if not what can I do to prevent this from happening? I love the phone and would trade it vs taking it back so I'm very curious either way

Here are a links to an article on the apple support website that might help out.
