2008 24inch iMac freezing - any suggestions?

Hello,
My mac keeps shutting down and I'm hoping someone out there can help! It's a 24inch iMac that I bought in late 2008 and the problems have been ongoing intermittently for maybe 6 months now. Basically what will happen is that I’ll be using it when it will suddenly freeze and the screen goes blank. I have to then hold down the power button on the back to turn it off and then on again. Since I don’t know what’s causing this, the following may or may not be relevant:
I use it most often for internet (I use firefox) but the issue has happened when doing other things too, so I don’t think it’s related to any particular problem.
I was running leopard and wondered if the problem was because I needed to upgrade, but since installing snow leopard the problem is exactly the same.
The computer seems to get hot, especially on the top left corner.
It’s showing that I have 36GB free on the hard drive.
I've been searching online for suggestions but haven't found anything directly relevant. Could anyone give me some ideas of what to try? Is it just getting old or is there something I can do? Any suggestions gratefully accepted and please let me know if there's other information that you would need to know in order to provide any suggestions.

Hmmm, this isn't working out so well. I tried to install after downloading from Macupdate, and it didn't work properly. I first saved the zip file, and then unzipped it but couldn't open the file. Now when I try to delete it, I get a message saying that I can't delete the application because it is open. When I try to open it, I get a message saying I can't open because it's damaged or incomplete. Any thoughts?

Have you noticed that your iMac's screen is less glossy than normal?
Do you prefer this over having an additional panel of glass making your display overly and unnecessarily glossy?
It may not look as pretty, but I'll bet your screen looks better and sharper and you may be getting a benefit of added heat dissipation. Also, not to mention, less eye strain and/or headaches
You will just have to be a little more careful with the iMac's real TFT screen if you choose this option.
A little more careful cleaning it and making sure no liquids get inside.
It's up to you what you want to do.
You can order the panel, anyway, but choose not to replace it until you sell it or have to bring in for repairs.

Have you tried the following:
- Reset the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore the iPod via iTunes on your computer. First from backup and if the problem persists restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

There is a good chance the printer is just getting auto IP internally..
Plug it into your TC. And then set to dhcp via the controls on the printer.
If you know the name of the printer it should be immediately available to the network.. but anyway, you can find its IP by printing out the test page. That will also give you the network name.
Most later HP printers have web access to the print servers.. just type the ip into your browser and see if it comes up.
From the Mac, you should then be able to set it up via the printer preferences. Most HP will just appear.. but if not you should perhaps delete the local version and then check again for network printers.

Are the photos in iPhoto?
If they are, you can simply copy your iPhoto Library (located in your Pictures folder) to a thumb drive or external drive and then copy it over to your other Mac. This will only work if the iMac has the same version (or later version) of iPhoto as does the Macbook Air. Then on the iMac, if you want to combine this new library with the existing one over there, use iPhoto Library Manager (a free download program).
If you want to copy over only a portion of that iPhoto library, iPhoto Library Manager can create a smaller library containing just the photos you want to include. Then copy that smaller library.

You can share multiple libraries with the Apple TV, they don't even need to use the same iTunes account. Just make sure that you use the same ID for homesharing on all devices.

Hi, my Iphones calibration is off, the time is frozen, and it freezes.Any suggestions? I already tried to reset it various times and updated it .

I have an iphone 5C, and the calibration started messing up since I tried clicking various things and it would click something else. Then the time started freezing, I changed it various times to update so that it updates to the current time but it just freezes. Now, it also freezes on me and it wont let me restart it with ease. Mine is doing that too. I tried the Menu/Center button. It's definitely fully charged. I've clicked from Hold/not several times. I've turned off/on. I've 'Reset' - nothing is working. It's been doing this for a week.
I called the 800# - I thought the dude was really nice. I was disappointed to find that I'd hafta pay $30 to have it shipped/$39 for 'agreement'. I've only had it for a couple months...

If you have tried the procedures in this knowledge base article, and nothing works, you may need to take the iMac to an Apple genius bar and have the techs remvove the disk, per this article.

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I'm not sure what you mean by "freezes". You could have a defective iPad. If you can demonstrate it to the Apple Store Genius, you may get a new iPad on the spot.
One thing you can try is to reset the iPad. Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow. The iPad will restart in a couple of minutes. Resetting will not hurt anything and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

Microsoft silverlight plugin does not work in my iMac. Any suggestion on how to make it work?

I occasionally attend webinars and in order to view and listen the site I use requires silverlight plugin. I used it in the past without any issues. Now even after I updated it yo the latest version it does not work. Is there a known issue of incompatibility with OSX mavericks? Does anyone have an idea on what the problem could be? I have an intel iMac and I use Safari. Thank you.

Simple, the best option is to redownload and install the latest version. This will overwrite the old files and fix the possible corrupt ones. If you are experiencing any problems on certain sites follow this next step:
Goto: Safari > Preferences > Extensions and make sure that extensions are enabled and that particular extension (silverlight) is enabled.

I have had and enjoyed my iphone 4 for a few months and untill the last few weeks it has been working great. A couple weeks ago it started randomly freezing in my camera app. it wouldn't allow me to take a pic or acces my alblum. To make matters more fustrating as of this morning it is freezing completely. I went to my alblum and when it froze I went to return to my home screen and it wouldn't go, so I restarted my phone and it took almost a half hour of freezing before it restarted. and once it did I couldnt text, call or acces my app's. So I reset my phone to factory network settings (the option to reset without losing app's) and now it is kind of working, but i'm worried at any time its going to freeze again. This is my only source of contacting my kids school and daycare when i'm out working, so any help would be appreciated...thanks

The folder where your backup data is stored changes depending on the computer's operating system. Since iTunes only keeps one backup per device, you should ensure the backup folder is included in your periodic data backup routine.

Firefox (and this is for you too, Pat) added their own PDF viewer with version 20, and it COMPLETELY DISABLES the ability to use the Reader or Acrobat plugin... at all. If you're using Firefox now, you have no choice or otpions to use ANY Adobe plugin to read PDFs in the browser window. As a long time beta tester for Mozilla, I've been round and round with their DEV people over this. It was a terrible design choice to kill the Adobe plugins, but they did it anyway. As a web designer with clients who have "fillable PDFs" in their websites, it's more than an inconvenience, it has cost business because visitors (spelled c-u-s-t-o-m-e-r-s) can't fill out contracts or order forms online anymore if they use Firefox.
I still use Firefox as my primary browser, but this issue really left me with a bad taste for it.
Safari, Opera, and Chrome will all open PDFs using the Adobe Plugin still. With Firefox, if PDFs don't open at all or open with the Firefox warning that "The PDF didn't display properly". Click Tools>Options, or on Mac I believe CMD + , to open Preferences, and under the Applications tab, scroll down tio Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list. Change "Preview in Firefox" to "Adobe Reader (Default)". Click OK and then Firefox will download PDFs instead of trying to open them for viewing.
That's a Windows pic, but it's the same menu on a Mac.
I have Reader 11 and Acrobat Pro 10 installed and Firefox still shows the plugins (10 and 11) installed but they are permanently greyed out now and there is no way (outside of tinkering with the code for Firefox) to reactivate them.
