2008 and 2012 DCs

Hi,
I have domain which has consists of four DCs, three of these are Windows 2008 R2 Ent x64 and one is Windows 2008 Ent x86. The 2008 x86 is needed for a particular application. Also only one DC is physical and this one holds all the FSMO roles and the others
are virtual.
I have a requirement to introduce a Windows 2012 R2 DC to the domain so that I can manage Windows 2012 servers and Windows 8/9.1 PCs from a group policy perspective and other app like IE 10/11. I wanted to know what the best way to do this was, for example
just add the domain controller role and I imagine that there will be scheme updates. Also I wanted learned if this particular setup is ok, i.e. leave the FSMO roles on the W8K R2 DC?

to manage GPOs there is NO NEED for a DC, this can be done from any Windows 8.1 client or Windows Server 2012 R2 MEMBER server also.
I suggest that you use a Central Store for easier management

Regional Settings differences between 2008 and 2012

Hi There,
Can anyone explain why some of the regional setting details have changed with Win 2012?
Example: Dutch (Belgium) - nl-BE
The 'Digital Grouping Symbol' has changed from a DOT to a WHITESPACE.
2008 - €1.000,00 whereas 2012 - €1 000,00
If the settings are changed on the servers will they persist after OS updates etc?

I see no reference in the KB article to modifications for the CET timezone nor any reference to the resolution of culture format info discrepancies.
A further issue is that the active regional settings on our PRD servers will be set to United States and it would appear that any modification to the Belgium locales (i.e. nl-BE, fr-BE) are not persisted once you switch to United States as the
active setting.
The knock on effect of this is that for our PRD web-applications (which are active across many regions), we have to write code to override the OS information. .NET uses the OS info to populate its Culture information.
Could you confirm if the differences between 2008 and 2012 are the result of a bug or are the changes planned? Based on communication with some of our customers in Belgium, they are of the opinion that the 2008 (and Win 2003) settings are per their expectations.
I really do not what to have to handle these situations across our application landscape and am sure that other people with globalized applications will also hit problems.

How do you repair ntoskrnl.exe error or system error in windows server 2008 and 2012

can you repair system file errors like ntoskrnl.exe in windows server 2008 and 2012 like like before in windows server 2003 ?
the steps were repairing ntoskrnl.exe error in windows server 2003
1- have a 2003 cd and from that cd start recovery console and copy from i386 directory ntldr and ntdetect.com to windows /system32 directory on the server and then repairing
2- MBR with fixmbr command and then rebuild BOT.INI file with bootcfg/rebuild .
now my question is how you repair or solve such problem with ntoskrnl.exe error in windows server 2008 and windows server 2012

What will take a lot of time? Repair or clean install? These days one can standup a new VM and have an operating system on it in around 20 minutes or so.
Correct server 2003 is file based deployment and completely different OS from repair perspective as well.

Can service broker work between SQL Server 2008 and 2012, ssbdiagnose returned an error !

We have a setup of three applications that sends and receive messages using Service Broker.
One part is on a server, we'll call 'S' have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) - 10.0.5512.0 (X64)
The other part, we'll call 'E' use to have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) - 10.0.5512.0 (X64).
But I am migrating these apps to a new server, we'll call 'C' that has: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3339.0 (X64)
I have used this command line tool to test it :
ssbdiagnose -E CONFIGURATION FROM SERVICE "//E/S/CService" -S "ServerC" -d EDatabase TO SERVICE "//S/S/ECService" -S ServerS -d SDatabase ON CONTRACT //E/S/ECContact
It returned:
An internal exception occurred: Cannot read property ServiceBrokerGuid.
This property is not available on SQL Server 7.0.
So, I am wondering, is it supposed to work between these two versions ?
As more info, in the previous setup, it was using certificates but I have changed the Endpoints to use only Windows Authentication.

In fact I was unclear, please let me provide you with more details.
Maybe the use of "always on" plays a role here... I will use different names so it might be clearer...
ServerSoftware2008 server has SoftwareDB database.
ServerEmployees2008 server has EmployeesDB database.
Service broker use to work fine between those two above, with certificates.
The new server comes in, two virtual servers with SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition with Always On.
I call it ServerEmployeesC but this is the listener. Behind, there is ServerEmployees2012_A and ServerEmployees2012_B and of course, both have a EmployeesDB database.
So, to use SSBDiagnose, I wonder if I need to use quotes around values and if I can use the listener name with FQDN. Concerning the use of instance name in the syntax, there is only one instance per server, is it best practice to use it on the command
line ?
Here is again, my command :

Configuring Service Broker between SQL Server 2008 and 2012 on Intranet

Hello, I would need help in configuring Service broker. As both servers are on the intranet, I wanted to remain the most simple so I used no certificates and allowed anonymous access but still, using SSBDiagnose, I can see errors.
I would like to paste here my configuration and my usage of SSBDiagnose, I already asked a question about SSBDiagnose usage but this new question is rather on the usage of certificates and the configuration of SSB, for me to know if I am doing this in the
best possible way.
Reading on the web, I have read in few places that certificates are not mandatory and that Windows Authentication only can be used. Then, I read that even if endpoints don't request certificates, the communication between two servers will still requires
certificates so I am wondering where is the truth...

Service broker does not have to use certificate. The Certificate is necessary when you want to use dialog security, by which you can encrypt all messages sent outside a SQL Server instance.

Remote Service Binding is used to privde dialog security. If you donnot need the dialog security, the Remote Service Binding is not mandatory.

System.Windows.Drawing not working on server Environment (Windows 2008 and 2012 server) ?

I am facing a problem from past few days on server environment. I have created the code for taking the screen shot of the windows as follow...This code is perfectly working in Run time environment. While running and debugging the application it is working
fine.
But once i configured this website on Windows server 2008 or Server 2012 it is not working it hangs out the application at the method graphics.CopyFromScreen().
I am unable to find out the solution for this from last few day's. please help me to fix it. The code is as follow.

2008 and 2012 Remote Desktop Service

I have a Windows 2012 R2 with License Manager and RD Session configured but the RD Licensing Diagnoser says that the Licensing mode is not configured and RD Session Host Server is within its grace period.

Problems with "seeing" VIEWS in one database (SQL 2008 and 2012)

I have database where I cannot see any views other than system views in SQL Management Studio.
I can list them, I can modify them and the application which uses the database can access them.
SELECT SCHEMA_NAME(schema_id) AS schema_name
,name AS view_name
FROM sys.views;
GO
I can create new views, but these are also "invisible" in Management Studio
Tested as dbo, sa etc.
I don't know how to list the permissions or to change them.

How to stop booting windows in recovery mode (for windows 2008 and 2012 editions)

we are configure hyper-v cluster contain about 100 VM , if a host is down (unplanned failover ) its VM restarted but in the recovery mode on another hosts.
pls tell me How to disable booting in recovery mode ?

Issue with VPN configuration in Windows 2008 r2 and 2012 Servers.

I hope you can help me to fix this issue, it's been 5 days since I a, trying to configure VPN in your 2008 and 2012 Servers. On both platform (2008 and 2012) I am getting same error while configuring VPN (after role installation).
"Unable to load C:\Windows\System32\iprtrmgr.dll". So, I have removed IPv 6 entry from the registry and now able to start server (not sure what configuration it took automatically). I tried to disable "Routing
and Remote Access" service and got the same error while enabling "Routing and Remote Access" is running but VPN is still not functioning properly).
I am getting following error,

Logical disk free space counters missing for server 2008 r2 and 2012 r2

I'm trying to get low disk space alerts for server 2008R2 and 2012 R2. While the monitors exist for 2008 and 2012 (Not-R2), they are missign for all R2 operating systems. Any idea how to either obtain these monitors, or create them so I can
get alerts for % disk free alerts?

What is your meaning of " monitors exist for 2008 and 2012 (Not-R2), they are missing for all R2 operating systems."? Does it means that the monitor is missing on all Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2 machine or it just a blank circle ?
By default, Windows XXX Logical disk Free Space monitor is enable for all windows XXX. You may check whether an override to disable it. Moreover, Windows Server XXXX Logical Disk Free Space (%) Low and Windows Server 2008 Logical Disk Free Space (MB) Low
is disable by default and you should manually enable it.

Anyone know if there is a way to migrate file shares from a Windows 2008 DC to a Windows 2012 DC? I am using robocopy and the NTFS permissions come with it but I am wondering if there is a way to get the permissions of the share over as well so I do not have to recreate those?

What are the major difference between ssis 2008 R2 and 2012

Hi,
We are planning to upgrade some of the packages from 2008 to 2012. If someone would provide a few insight then it would be great.

The major difference that has come up in SSIS 2012 is a new deployment model called project deployment model. As per this package is no longer a basic unit but its the project. When you use this deployment model you can deploy project from Visual Studio/SSDT
environment directly to the server. The project in this case will get stored in Integration Services Catalog which uses a new db called SSISDB in the relation database itself. So in that sense its more closely coupled to database engine. Also you cant deploy
a single package in this case, it has to be complete project. The project also preserves the versions for packages so any time you can revert to one of the previous version if needed. SSIS Catalog doesnot use configurations. Instead there's new concept of
parameters introduced. Parameters can be defined at project or package level and this will help you to sent values from outside. You can also define environments inside SSIS catalog and created variables in it. This should then be mapped to parameters within
project/package and based on value you set for variables package will execute with values at runtime.

Other changes include new tasks like exepression task, DQS Task etc and features like data taps which can be used for debugging data flow at runtime
