This morning my iMac has stopped playing DVDs altogether. It had been struggling to play them before, but now it won't even read them.
I'm running a 9.1, so the warranty is well past due. Not sure if there's anything I can do at this point to fix it, tried to manually eject the SuperDrive in Applications (as per a troubleshooting method) but that doesn't work either. Anyone know a way to fix this?I would start first with some basic resets, do a SMC AND PRAM reset first, do each 2-3 times and then test. If you don't know how please click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If those don't work then I suspect your SuperDrive is either dirty or worn out. You can go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit. If that fails then take the machine in for service.

IMac ejects CDs & Software Discs, only reads DVDs
Hello. I am not very good at working with computers, so sorry if I forget to add things. I was given a used one of these:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
It automatically ejects CDs, software discs, etc. The only type of disk it reads are DVDs, and at times, it still ejects them. How can I repair this? I do not have applecare since this is a second hand computer. Would it be very expensive to replace the optical drive? Do I need a new one? Can I run an external dvd/cd drive to just avoid this? Is the drive just dirty?
Please help. Thanks to a very helpful Apple Genius Bar expert, I have just saved over £100. After reading this forum I tried everything suggested to get my superdrive to accept my DVDs and to get my iDVD to produce a slideshow. After two weeks of frustration I took the whole iMac to the shopping mall. The genius reached into the counter draw and held a can of compressed air. After a minute of squirting the air into the dvd slot all my prayers had been answered. He told me that cleaning the drive like this work on about a third of all his clients. I have now bought a can of compressed air from Amazon for £4 and have it ready for the next problem the arises. (I have tried the same technique on the unruly kids, but it does not seem to work on them!)

2010 iMac Ejects Discs After About 10-15 Seconds. Help??
Hi guys, I just tried to put a DVD into my iMac and it ejects it after about 15 seconds. I tried another DVD and it does the same! Any suggestions? I bought the Mac December 2010 so I no longer have Apple Care. Please say it doesn't need a new drive!
Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC; then, try again.

IMac ejecting 10.5.6 install dvd.
I just bought the Mac box set to upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5. My iMac keeps ejecting the 10.5.6 install dvd, even when I restart holding down "C". The superdrive is a Sony DVD RW DW-U10A, Revision A13b. The CPU is a PowerPC G4 (3.3) with 1 GHZ speed.
I'm not sure if this would work but you could try turning off the computer, and truning it on while holding down alt (option). Then select the disk. I'm sorry if it doesn't work but you might as well try.

Combo Drive Plays DVDs, reads data CDs, ejects commerical CDs...
My Combo Drive currently will not:
-burn CDs
-play music (commercial) CDs
-load software (commercial) CDs
It will:
-play DVDs
-recognize and read previously burned (non-commerical) data CDs
Commercial CDs are not recognized--the drive struggles with them for a minute or so and then ejects them.
I've read of similar problems elsewhere, but my situation seems a bit different because the computer will recognize and read previously burned data CDs, so I don't think it's a problem with the lasers. What is different about commercial music and software CDs? Also, what would that have to do with problems burning data? Could this be a software issue?
ThanksI read elsewhere on the site about resetting the PRAM and that solved the problem. Drive functions normally now.

My iMac will not play CDs. (They are ejected.)
-It does play DVDs.
-I have reloaded OS X.
Suggestions?
OS X Yosemite 10.10 (14A389)
iMac (20-inch, Early 2008)
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MBHi john_,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac is reading DVDs but not CDs, and you've already reinstalled OS X, try these steps next:
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

My iMac freezes up after the screensaver runs for a few minutes
My 30inch iMac freezes up after the screensave has been running for a few minutes. This happens about every other day. I leave my system running all the time. nothing will unfreeze things so I have to do a hard button reset. I am running all the latest system updates etc.
Reinstall Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.
If it crashes again, third party plugins could still be at fault even though they do not show up in the report.

IMac ejects blank DVDs only (plays DVDs, CDs and accepts blank CDs)
I see a lot of threads with a similar theme to my question - but not one that matches it, so have started a new thread.
My iMac will play commercial DVDs, DVDs I have burnt myself and commercial CDs, and will write to blank CD, but ejects blank DVDs (after 5-10 seconds of thinking about it). I have tried a range of blanks (different types and manufacturers). Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm thinking it's a curious software issue as the superdrive is otherwise functioning perfectly.
Thanks in advanceThis issue is common and does not seem to be confined to any particular iMac model or Optical Drive brand that is used in them. Although it might help to know what iMac you have, what OS X it is running and what program(s) you are using to burn DVDs...?
1. Try toggling your Blank DVD: Preference, from the current selection to another and then back to "Ask what to do"
2. Try cleaning the Superdrive with a standard Lens Cleaning Kit.
Example: > Memtek 32020029479 CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit: Electronics
3. Try creating either a burn folder (in Finder) or have your finished project ready to burn (in other App's) and force them to ask for a blank Disc.
4. Then if you still can not use Blank DVDs, contact Apple Support and make arrangments for a service appointment.

My 24" iMac won't read audio cds--ejects them after about 15 seconds
My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.
I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
Trash the following folders:
com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
Restart
Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years, but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes. -
IMac won't play DVDs but will play CDs
For some reason my late '09 iMac won't play DVDs, at least not often. I was watching a DVD on it yesterday, left the disc in to go downstairs, and when I came back it wouldn't play again. It now doesn't even recognise that there is a DVD in it, but just spits it out again after a few seconds. I imported a couple of CDs to iTunes with it yesterday, it generally seems fine with CDs, but it has a big problem with DVDs. Any ideas on what I can do to solve this?
Hi Marcus
It sounds like the DVD drive heads have gone out of position and the drive needs to be replaced. Contact your dealer or Apple.

What external DVD player plays commercial movies with a 2008 iMac?
I have a Samsung external player/writer but it will not play movies.

What are the ones that did play commercial movies then?
Toshiba & LaCie.
I must have spent ten hours researching this.
What did the manufacturer tell you?
but even VLC wouldn't play it.
VLC plays anything you throw at it. At least 99.999999%. What type of file (suffix) is this movie file? Where did you get the movie from?
iMac 2008, OS 10.9.1
External Samsung DVD/CD writer player
You need to determine from the vendor if the player is compatible w/Maverick. Have you done this yet? If not, why not?
