2008 iMac freezes with black and white patterns

Hi,
I'm surfing the web for a hint up and down the last 2 days w/o success.
The day before my iMac from March 2008 suddenly freezed and showed black and white pattern. A reboot doesn't help, the wheel moves for a while and then freezes. Boot into save mode doesn't work it looks like it loads but then again freezes.

I fear it's the gpu, is this replaceable ? I read a lot yes but seems to depend on the production year.
If iMac is not useable is it useable as an monitor only ?
If it's display is it replaceable ?
Also can someone share how much I can expect for gpu or display repair ?
Thanks for any hints.

I brought the iMac today to a service center. 1 hour later they already called me stating that the gpu is dead and they recommend to change for 780 SGD plus 127 SgD for diagnosis which is ard 910 USD (100 USD for diagnosis) :( .
What a pain. The gpu is 8800 GS after some reading well known for failure, I told that the guy and he said some do and it's still working for a year...well.. 900 bucks is some cash. Since I have all orig apple products, 3 iphones, 2 ipads and the iMac, first time I'm considering to do something not original....
I've told the guy that I have to sleep over it.
Anyone who was in the same or similar one way road ? Repair or go for hackintosh or give Apple another chance with a new Mac ?

    iMac screen flash black and white when returning to top sites or before sleep...any ideas why?

    Howdy OatsaMae,
    It sounds like your screen is flashing unexpectedly on you for some reason. I would recommend this section from the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
    Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
    You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
    Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
    From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
    Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
    Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • How do I print a booklet with a colour cover but with black and white inside pages?

    Hi there,
    I need to print a large amount of booklets, which have a colour cover but are grayscale on the inside. However, I am having trouble setting up my document to successfully do this and I am unsure if it is something I can change in InDesign or if it is something I should figure out with my printer driver?
    We used Page Plus for these booklets in the past and were able to do this with the same printer, so that makes me think there might be setting I could change in InDesign to achieve the same result.
    It integral that the printer knows that the inside pages of the booklet are black and white, as we get charged per copy for colour printing and it is vastly increasing our printing costs.
    My coworker believed that exporting the file as a PDF with the options: Colour Conversions (convert to destination - Pressure Numbers), Destination (sRGB IEC61966-2.1), and Profile Inclusion Policy (Don't Include Profiles) is making a difference. However, I don't believe is is the case.
    If anyone had another suggestion that I could try, that'd be great!!

    @Eugene – do you have details for "Export as Grayscale"?
    I tried with the following details:
    Target-Profile: Dot Gain 15%
    Convert to Target Profile
    Include Target Profile
    If I do it this way I get:
    Target Profile not included
    Wrong numbers for my colors
    (I tested with a self-made color wedge on the page for the percentages of Black shown below)
    Seen in Acrobat Pro 10 with proof simulation "Dot Gain 15%":
    100 % Black => 100 %
    80 % Black => 82 %
    60 % Black => 63 %
    40 % Black => 43 %
    20 % Black => 22 %
    I could convert to "Dot Gain 15%" in Acrobat Pro's Preflight Panel, but this would show the same wrong percentages (just tested).
    What I can do, however, is printing to PostScript with color separations, only color channel Black.
    That would work, if I chose a Distiller setting, that will not change the color, to convert my separated PostScript file to PDF.
    Seen in Acrobat Pro 10* with proof simulation "Dot Gain 15%" or any of the other available gray scale profiles.
    (Acrobat Pro 11 might get this wrong due to a bug)
    100 % Black => 100 %
    80 % Black => 80 %
    60 % Black => 60 %
    40 % Black => 40 %
    20 % Black => 20 %
    This separated PDF (channel Black only) can now be converted with a self-made correction* in Acrobat Pro's Preflight Panel to a gray scale PDF/X-1a.
    If done right * the color values stay as defined in inDesign.
    Output in my case:
    PDF/X-1a
    OI: GrayScale profile Black ink of ISO Coated v2 300%
    Tested with:
    InDesign CC 2014.2
    Distiller X
    Acrobat Pro X
    Mac OSX 10.7.5
    Uwe
    * There are several, convoluted steps necessary to get this (hope, I can remember them all):
    Not optional:
    Have a grayscale profile representing the channel Black of your intended output CMYK or generate one!
    In my case the base CMYK profile was: ISO Coated v2 300%.
    And I got a "Black Ink of ISO Coated v2 300%" profile for Grayscale conversions by generating this with my PhotoShop app.
    Maybe optional, but helpful:
    Change the color settings of Acrobat Pro X to use the color settings file you generated in PhotoShop where:
    Grayscale is defined as the black channel of ISO Coated v2 300%: "Black Ink of ISO Coated v2 300%"
    Mandatory, but somehow tricky:
    Then on to the Preflight Panel of Acrobat Pro to generate a custom preflight profile.
    None of the ordinary ones will fit exactly (at least in my Acrobat Pro X).
    1. Make a duplicate of an already stored Preflight profile that converts color to Gray. Name it appropriately.
    2. Include a single correction for converting to Gray Scale (at this time, or if you do something like that the first time, it's not possible to change or duplicate that single correction)
    3. Save your new profile. Close the profile.
    4. Open the profile again.
    5. Now, suddenly it's possible to duplicate that single correction (converting to Gray Scale).
    Do some changes, appropriate correction options, eg. adding "Black Ink of ISO Coated v2 300%" as OI to the PDFs you will convert.
    4. Use that duplicate single correction in your new Preflight profile.
    5. Save your custom preflight profile.

  • Pin names and numbers do not print with black and white printer setup option

    Multisim V12
    Printer HP LaserJet 1320
    File -> Print Options -> Print Sheet Setup, check In black/white, OK
    Then
    File ->  Print Preview, shows all elements of the drawing in black white
    Then  select Print and the drawing prints without pin names and pin numbers.
    The same procedure with the black/white unchecked previews in color and then prints all circuit elements

    Hi HiZTrace,
    I used Multisim 12 with the same configuration and printed with a HP LaserJet 4250, but it seemed to be working well for me. There could be some incompatibility issue with your printer driver. A workaround you can try is to install a PDF Converter and print the file in color, then print the generated PDF file in black and white. There are many PDF Converters available, for example, CutePDF Writer (free)
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • How can I prevent my screen getting covered with black and white lines while working on the internet which only happens with firefox and only go when I 'go back' or go down a page?

    It happens as I surf - horizontal black and white lines particularly when I scroll down and only goes if I can go to a new page or go back a page. It is driving me crazy and only happens with firefox. I have disabled all plug ins but it still happens.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
    *Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

    Yes, Color. The trick is to use the same values for red, green and blue.

  • My Early 2008 iMac freeze with no apparent reason

    I have an Early 2008 iMac (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM).
    Since installing Lion, sometimes the computer freezes without apparent reason.
    The only thing I'm sure is that this is NOT the same as the Quicktime video problem – I wasn't watching a Quicktime video, nor a Flash website when it froze. Actually, today happened while I wasnt' doing anything: the computer was on, but I was at launch.
    Anyway, what happens is really strange: the screen freeze, I can't do things like change volume, but the mouse still works – albeit without producing results on screen such as dock magnification etc. Also, while the computer was frozen a Time Machine backup occured as scheduled, and I was able to stream my computer's music to my iPhone using the Home Sharing feature.
    The clock also remain frozen (at 12:51), so I looked at the logs and this is what I found:

    At this point I restarted the computer using the power button.
    For the record, a few months ago I replaced the hard drive thinking it could be the problem – good thing I needed more space anyway because it happened twice AFTER I replaced it.
    Any help?

    Welcome to Lion, I have 10.7.4 and this has been a problem every two weeks or so since 10.7.1. Fun.

  • Why when I put the Selection Colorization with Black and White, I need put Black in the RGB tab?

    I was watching the tutoarial about Photoshop, and when he talked about Selection Colorization, I didn't understand why he put Blach in the RGB tab! Can anyone tell me, please?

    I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I watched the video and am guessing that you are asking why he "paints" with black on the layer mask.
    White (visible) and black (invisible) define visibility of the layer, in this case a Black & White layer. So when he paints with black on the lighthouse, the Black & White layer becomes invisible in those areas, letting the color show through.

My friend is going to canada for a few weeks so if i order new operating disk now he can pick me one up and i can start over when he returns. also my time machine wont work it says disk needs repair...

    You will likely have to repair the drive from Leopard's install disk. Hold down c key while booting and repair drive from Utilities. Directions for Pram (Ram)
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    Post back with a happy computer.

  • Creating black and white charts with patterns in Pages?

    Hi.  Does anyone know how to create black and white patterned charts in Pages (or other iWork application)?  When making Charts in Pages (i have the most recent version), you can make all sorts of colored charts (bar charts, histograms, pie charts, etc.), but in preparing doumnets for publication i need all my charts in black & white.  I can make histograms and bar charts using different shades of grey no problem, but i'd like to create histograms using black and white "patterns" like dots, horizontal lines, stripes, etc.  Does anyone have any idea how to do this, or know where existing patterns can be downloaded for import into Pages?
    Many thanks.

    Don't export it as a .jpeg which is unsuitable for B&W images, blurring them as rgb files (not B&W).
    Better is .tiff (compressed B&W tiff are tiny) or 1 bit .gif.
    It is also possible that .pdf vector files might work but I haven't experimented with those.

    This is very retro lo-tech with unattractive results, which is why I guess Apple hasn't bothered with them.

    just having some trouble getting Imac to recognise black and white .icc.  Am trying to set up a print profile as a default black and white.  Am running 6 Imac computers through a Mac mini server and all but 2 mac's won't show up with black and white icc.
    I've downloaded the latest printer drivers (Fuji Zerox Document Centre C250) on each machine but still getting no Joy
    any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Black and white selective coloring with brushes disappeared

    The down and dirty:
    Upgraded to Aperture 3.1.1
    Aperture then updated my library
    I open a file that I have selectively colored with black and white (a track and field runner and her lane is color, the field is black and white) and to my horror the thumbnail and "quick preview" is correctly colored, but the full resolution image is not
    How do I get my hard work back?

    I'd like to add one last bit that seems strange to me (and gives me hope that I can recover my edits). When I switch "quick preview" from on to off and the image zooms to the native resolution my edits are in tact for half a second before going away (the image fully loads - I'm not looking at an expanded rendering of the quick preview).
    Also, when I move the image at full zoom my B&W edits flash briefly until I stop moving the image.
    I tried repair permissions and repair database. Both failed.

  • Trouble printing black and white

    Friends,
    I'm trying to print black and white on an imac i7, snow leopard, hp premium plus all in one (309g) printer. The prints have a slight purple cast. It is highly noticeable when the prints are placed next to older black and whites printed with an HP 8450. I print out of Aperture normally, but I'm having the same problem printing from preview. I use hp paper and inks, and the hp printer profiles.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    I used all current profiles for the printer. However, I just tried something different:
    I turned off colorsync and let the printer manage the colors. I got a MUCH BETTER
    black and white rendition. Who woulda thunk it -- all this effort to manage colors,
    and the printer does a better job than we do. Go figger.
    Thanks for your help.
    Steve
    You have the right idea, at least in some respects. The trouble with Apple's color managements system and pretty much all graphics programs these days is that those who coded them haven't got a foggy idea about black and white nor even grayscale. For instance the color filter for "black and white" is not true black and white, it is RGB gray; in other words it is using three colors to produce gray (or black) and that is just not the same. RGB gray images are still 24-bit images whereas true grayscale is 8-bit and true black and white is 1-bit. True black and white images can be very high resolution yet be very small files because of the phenomenal compression that's possible. Only those of use who actually work(ed) with black and white film and black & white ink on presses truly understand black and white color. Which is unfortunate because RGB gray is so poor and the files are just HUGE!
    I've encountered the same problem, and am trying to solve it also. Perhaps I can find a profile for true black and white. Or create one? For instance, as I mentioned above, Preview has a filter for black and white, (but only to save a pdf file) and if you then save the pdf file as a TIF via that black & white filter and then load the resulting image into a program that's actually capable of black and white, you will find that the file it created is actually RGB gray (24-bit) - it LOOKS gray but it's not. Whereas if you load a true black and white image into Preview (Preview unfortunately has no means of creating true black and white, nor even to convert back to color) then you will discover that now you have the option to save as 1-bit or 8-bit gray (1-bit being true black and white with no shades of gray and 8-bit being grayscale with 256 shades of gray i.e. 0 to 255).
    So while PAHU writes...
    Black and white printing of photos (aka grayscale printing) uses other colours,
    not just black, to make grays. If you can see a purple cast, this could be a result
    of the magenta not printing in the correct spot or being too prominent in the print.
    ...that is correct insofar as what printers/programs typically are doing with the given color profiles, but it is not correct. Grayscale should NOT use other colors; grayscale should use only black (which is also more economical). By turning off colorsync you likely enabled the printer's color management system to take over and print true grayscale (black ink only).
    So I don't yet have a solution, but I do agree that you've touched on a glaring deficiency in Mac OS color management and probably a great many graphic programs today, and likely the same goes for many printers.

  • GreyScale to Black and White

    Hey,
    I'm having a few problems converting a grey scale BufferedImage to black and white. I create the BufferedImage as greyscale:
    Image image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(source);
    // Create a grayscale color model.
    ColorSpace cs = ColorSpace.getInstance(ColorSpace.CS_GRAY);
    int bits[] = new int[]{4};
    ColorModel cm = new ComponentColorModel(cs, bits, false, false, Transparency.OPAQUE, DataBuffer.TYPE_BYTE);
    WritableRaster raster = cm.createCompatibleWritableRaster(image.getWidth(null), image.getHeight(null));
    // use the colour model to create the buffered image
    BufferedImage bimg = new BufferedImage(cm, raster, false, null);
    bimg.createGraphics().drawImage(image, 0, 0, null);I then do some processing on the image, but when i go to save it, i want it to be black and white to reduce the file size and allow for G3 TIFF compression. I was able to convert it to black and white, but the file size of the TIFF didn't really reduce to much. When I was saving the image as grey scale they averaged at about 600Kb, now with black and white they average at 500Kb, but they should be much lower. Here is how i convert them to BW:
    byte[] darkLight = {(byte) 0xff, (byte) 0};
    IndexColorModel blackAndWhite = new IndexColorModel(1, 2, darkLight, darkLight, darkLight);
    BufferedImage bwImage = new BufferedImage(image.getImage().getWidth(null), image.getImage().getHeight(null), BufferedImage.TYPE_BYTE_BINARY, blackAndWhite);
    bwImage.createGraphics().drawImage(image.getImage(), 0, 0, null);
    image.setImage(bwImage);I was wondering if there is a more efficient way of doing this, i.e meaning a way to convert the image without creating a new one in memory. and also any information on why the image is still taking up so much space even though it if BW.

    That code will work, but is there a way to do this conversion without creating a new bufferedImage, memory could be an issue, since i'm working with really large bufferedImages
