2008 Mac Pro burner failure - report "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03"

Problem just arose - burners working days ago - NO major changes in Mac Pro --- Attempting to burn some DVDs (data only), using the latest version of Toast v12.0 & Dragon Burn, as soon as I tell either my internal or external unit to burn, it runs a few minutes then pops up dialog box - "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03". Blanks are new Memorex. I've restarted Mac Pro multiple times, still no burning possible. In dire need to restore capability. Most gracious thanks for ANY immediate assistance.

There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.
EDIT: There is an interesting helpful feature buried in System Profiler ... (read the last two lines of the report):

  • Sence Key = MEDIUM ERROR, Sence Code = 0X0C, 0X08

thank God, im not the only one
For the 1st 2 years, everything was ok, burning, playing audio cd, burning dvd-r, cdrw, cd, everything i mean.
Then everyhing started when i cant play audio cd (the original audio cd that i bought from the shop). But wut is funny is that, i can play audio cd that i created from this imac. Then i could not play vcd too. But any other data cd is ok, still accesseble.
Then the dvd, at 1st, i can play dvd movie n read dvd data. But now, it seems that some certain brand or speed of dvd cant be read and cant be burn.
I tried to burn a sony dvd-r 1-4x, but failed, but when i burn sony dvd-r 1-8x, it is ok.
and recently when i burn, afterr halfway, this message came out
    Sence Key = MEDIUM ERROR,
    Sence Code = 0X0C, 0X08
    wut doeas it means?
    and wut should i do?

    Hi Misyon Isywaz.
When the CD or DVD burner display this error, that's mean that exist a problem with the media or optical system.
Sense Key, is referred to a fault on the optical system.
Medium Error, is referred to a fault with the disk.
I recommend you to try burn using 2x or 1x speed, if it's works, the problem could be that you doesn't check an option called "Buffer Underrun Prevention" which is located in recorder settings menu in the Roxio Toast Software, or clean your unit using a "Cleaner Disk".
If decreassing the burn speed, the "Sense Key" message persist, your optical unit could be damaged.
Bye, 'n I hope that this can help you to solve your problem.
    Good Look.
    Jose Blanco.

  • Early 2008 mac pro 8 core quicktime videos opening in java script code

When I try to view a quicktime video it opens in Java Script Code instead of playing the video on my early 2008 Dual Quad Core 2.8 Ghz. Mac Pro running OSX 10.5.8

That's not much to go on, but I doubt it has anything to do with it being a Mac Pro. Select the clip and Get Info (Cmd I) to see what application is named in the "Open with" drop down menu. If it is anything other than QuickTime player, change it and try again.  Also, repair your permissions...

  • What does this mean? drive reported error: sense key = medium error, etc,

What does this error message mean and what can I do about it?
While trying to burn a CD, about 15 seconds after the burn started, I got this error message:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
What does this mean and what can I do about it? Any help greatly appreciated. TIA, Bill

I have no idea what the error means. However, need a little more info from you.
What type of CD are you using, audio or data? -R, -RW?
    Any problems previously?

  • 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 RAM burning up - running hot

Problem: 2008 Mac Pro Tower running hot.
Possible causes: Power Supply? Fan not working? Machine has 667 mhz RAM not 800 mhz.
PSU was chirping like a cricket a few weeks ago. I pulled it out, air cleaned it (and the entire Mac, vacuumed all the dust) and left PSU out for 12 hours to static discharge, etc. When I put the PSU back in, it was working and the chirping was gone.
Successfully used the MAC for a few days, no probs other than 2 DIMMS went bad. I went away for 2 weeks, tried to start-up the Mac yesterday and it wouldn't power on at all, no light. I unplugged it, tried different outlets, power cords, etc. Then I removed any changes that I had made previously (i.e. installed diff HD and 2 new RAM DIMMs to replace the ones that burned up) before going away. I removed PSU and let it sit while I cleaned the 2 DIMMs that had seemed to overheat before I went away. Put it all back together (PSU, old DIMMs which were cleaned and left HD #3 out) and it powered up. I then noticed that I was down from 32 GB RAM to 16 GB very quickly. The machine had also "shut down because of a problem" during that time then restarted and ran for a bit. I repaired the 16 GB RAM by cleaning it, brought it back up to 32 GB again and within minutes it was back to 24 GB. I pulled the RAM cards out and they were hot. The last 8 GB to go were likely the only DIMMs I haven't cleaned yet. I don't know how long that fix will last. Seems like we have a pattern of over heating.
Any ideas? Is it the 667 mhz RAM? The PSU? The fan? (How do you test a fan?)
    Thank you for your time.
    2008 Mac Pro 3,1
2x Quad Core 2.80 Ghz Intel Xeon
    32 GB RAM (667 mhz)

    10.9 OS Mavericks
    Logic Pro X

First the RAM must be made for your computer as determined by Apple:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
Thus you have an early 2008 Mac Pro if it is a Mac Pro tower and not a MacBook Pro notebook.
The RAM must be either preinstalled by Apple, or from a place that sells lifetime warranty early 2008 Mac Pro RAM.
Just because you got PC6400 DDR2 ECC 800 Mhz FB-DIMM with 256 bit wide memory architecture, as the specs call for,
does not mean the RAM is compatible.  Only RAM stated to be for "early 2008 Mac Pro" is compatible with those towers.
http://www.macsales.com/ (OWC) http://www.datamem.com/ and http://www.crucial.com/ all sell RAM by stating the time of year and model name.
Do not buy ValueRAM.   If after doing that it doesn't work, some directions for other interior repairs exist on http://www.ifixit.com/ and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
Check to make sure the circuit your machine is on is giving off the full amp called for by specs and that current is not split to other devices, and you have either a UPC or surge protector power cord that can handle that ampere. If there is any chance the machine was plugged in during a lightning storm, your power supply may be fried even with a surge protector or UPC being there.  No surge protector is 100% lightning foolproof.

  • 2008 Mac Pro keeps losing connection to my Plex Blu-ray burner

my 2008 Mac Pro keeps losing connection to my Plex Blu-ray burner.  It is installed in the second optical drive bay.  If I power down, pull the connections to the drive and re-attach, the drive is again recognized on boot.  A day later, no drive found.  The first optical (top bay) drive never loses connection.  Any thoughts?

Disable drive sleep in the Energy Saver system preference.

  • When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome", chime, fan goes on, a light goes on on my Apple monitor and then nothing - black screen.  Whats going on?

When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome chime", fan comes on, a light comes on on my Apple moniter and then nothing - black screen. What,s going on?

what you describe as the "welcome chime" is the indicator that your Mac has passed the Power-On Self test, and if a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
If the screen stays dark, the most likely explanation is a graphics card failure. But it could also be caused by a backlight failure in the LCD, so be sure you try shining a bright light at the screen to be check whether the picture is there, but just not illuminated.
Graphics card failure will end the boot-up process in some cases, and not have an impact in others. Two external indications you can use when your display is not working are: The Caps Lock key, which is under the control of Mac OS X, and the Control-Eject dialog box shown below. Note that the default is Shutdown, so a Mac that shuts down in response to Control-Eject followed by Return is working fine.

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, which has re-booting problems. Also what does the spinning beach-ball indicate?

Hi, I have an early 2008 Mac Pro which has re-booting problems.
    Processor speed is: 2.8
    Memory: 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    2 x 28GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.
If there is anyone who has some answers to help me solve my problem, I would be most grateful.
    Robert

When you have the beachball activity, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Can I install Windows 8.1 on my early 2008 Mac Pro using Bootcamp?

check this discussion if you want to DL it online and install it now, you'll still need a retail key to activate it
the DL url is there, and the OP there also found what looks like a good link for burning to cd instructions

  • Mac Crashes.... for the last two days I upon power up I have experienced the "White screen of death" on my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8.

for the last several days I have experienced the dreaded wite screen of death upon power up of my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8,
Screen will hang white - no apple logo - when I hit the power button resart - the mac power light does not go out, but "clicks" and  the mac will restart.
I get the white apple logo screen and then some terminal script (about 20-25 lines) that lasts for a dew seconds - then an apple message appears telling me that my computer needs to be restarted due to an error - press a key or wat.... this will cycle continuously.
If I power down and boot in safe mode - the computer seems to start up - with a crash log.
Once I restart from safe mode - the mac seems to start fine and I am using it without issue - (of course until I power down and come back in the studio the following day...)
I am not familiar with crash logs - but here are the two most recent...

Remove the third party uaudio and motu drivers then restart your Mac.
Once I restart from safe mode - the mac seems to start fine and I am using it without issue
Safe Mode only loads required kernel extensions which is why Safe Mode works, "without issue" ...

  • Early-2008 Mac Pro startup - sometimes it does, sometimes it don't.

I have an early-2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks. Having issues with start up - powering up is intermittent - sometimes it does, sometimes it don't. I have had some success by unplugging it overnight, and it boots up once plugged back in the AM. I have been able to restart and zap the PRAM; I have also changed the battery. Thoughts?

You could have a problem with file corruption or your hard drive is going south. I would try moving your system to another hard drive then set that drive as the startup. See if the problem is resolved.
You can also try reinstalling Mavericks:
    Reinstall Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro-What type of HD?  Smart failing?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro and have two hard drives in it.  The main system drive is a 2TB Western Digital drive I installed about a year ago.  The 2nd drive is a 1TB Seagate drive which is the original drive that came with the Mac Pro.
When looking at Disk Utility a few days ago I realized the drive is showing up in Red and it's saying that SMART is failing.  I've never had this happen before and like having a warning.
    First Question:
When SMART shows up as failing can it be a false alarm or is it likely a definite sign of impending hard drive failure?  When this happens, does the drive frequently fail quickly or does it take awhile?  The fortunate thing is I back this drive up frequently to Time Machine.
    Second Question:
What SATA speed does the Mac Pro handle?  I see many hard drives that are 3.0GB/s and some that are 6.0GB/s. Does the Mac Pro handle the faster 6.0GB/s?  If not, would they still work but just not at the additional speed?
I may consider upgrading to a 1.5TB or 2TB but figured I'll go with a Western Digital or Seagate drive.  I see cache ranging from 16MB to 64MB and speeds at 5400RPM and 7200RPM.  Between these two which is more important, large cache size or RPM's?
    Thank you for your help.

Run WD Lifeguard (*Windows program or their ISO you burn to CD) is best and almost only reliable way.
If a drive has started to use spare blocks it is gone.
IT DOES NOT MATTER. Any 3.5" SATA drive is a drive is all SATA and mostly about features and specs. So just buy the newest size you need. 64MB cache and 7.2K (Green can have trouble on Macs and are more for backup and storing movies etc).
I recommend WD 10K VR newest 250GB 200MB/sec for system $152, and WD Black or Hitachi.
    http://www.macperformanceguide.com likes 2-3-4TB.
Questions like this get asked unfortunately.

For every drive, you want to have multiple backup sets (clone and Tm) because drives and backups do fail and you want an alternate boot drive and to restore when needed.
