2008 MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running like a dying lion

November 23, 2013 - I am trying to hold my MacBook running 7.5.8  together. But it seems like I'm having big internet browser delay as well as dogged performance. I've now stopped upgrading for the last two OSX updates. Why is my maching really it seems like the last month that the performance has slowed to a crawl. Is it just that my machine has outlived its operational life? Any feedback would be helpful!.

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Is it possible to upgrade a macbook 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo to OSX 10.8.5?

I have an old mackbook, approx 2007 era. Is it possible to upgrade a macbook 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo to OSX 10.8.5?

You can only upgrade to 10.7 Lion. Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. Or go to http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion and purchase it there. The price is $19.99.
You will have to be at 10.6.8 first.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. After you’ve installed that then use the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.
You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/faq/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-3-g b-memory-limitation-details.html
OWC tests have found that there is a slight speed increase with having two 2gb sticks in rather than one 1gb and one 2gb. Your model is in the gray lines at the bottom of the graph. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_Benchmark/Apple_MacBook/

  • New Corsair ram issues - 2008 Macbook (white) 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Just after having a successful (though after some help from the forum) install of 8GB into my mid 2009 MBP I helped my brother install a 4GB (2x2GB) memory upgrade from OEM 2GB (2x1GB) into his 2008 macbook (white) 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system. Checked and made sure I got the right memory speed and capacity for the 2008 macbook. Here's the memory I recieved http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011UPBMA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
So since installing even though the system seems to read the memory correctly showing in system profiler that 4GB is recognized and the status reads "OK" the system is crashing
Below is the latest system crash report that I copied from when I had to restart the computer. Any help on what to do or if the memory is bad?
Note: After booting into safe boot. The system is still crashing! (The report below is before the crash in safe boot)

Hmmm I'm not quite sure if I'm ready to conclude that it's not compatible. I mean vendor of ram shouldn't be why it's not working as I just got done installing Corsair ram into my mid 2009 MBP and although had trouble initially was able to figure out (with the help of this forum and a very helpful member: Kappy) that I had an incompatible (for OSX) kext installed on my sytem. The Corsair ram on my MBP is running great now.
Wish I knew how to read the panic report. Anything pointing to something else that may be incompatible or anything pointing specifically to the memory.
I'm not trying to ignore your advice as I'm very appreciative of it, it's just that I was pretty certain that the ram purchased should be compatible as I checked all specifications and noticed the reviews pointing to compatibility.

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
If it's the Late 2007 model 3,1 then 10.7 is the most that it can run.

IOS software is only for the iPad and iPhone.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

what do I need to upgrade my 10.6.8 OS to in order to get icloud on my MacBook 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo?

Ok, please try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • MacBook 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Wireless Router Choices

I just ordered a MacBook 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and need to set up a wireless network with my wife’s 24 inch iMac. I see numerous posts about problems connecting with airport. Can anyone recommend a wireless router that is truly compatible with the new Intel Core 2 Duo Macs and which ones to stay away from.
I know the Airport Extreme base station is considerably more expensive than the non-Apple brands, but I am willing to pay more for reliability if the Airport Extreme base station is the only reliable choice.
Thank you for considering my questions.

    Hi,
I have both an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, and both now work flawlessly with my 2Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook. White it is considerably more expensive, they're so easy to setup and have awesome range and signal strength.
We have 3 Macs in this house, and can roam freely throughout the house and enjoy excellent wireless signal strength wherever we go.
Apple has released an update for the Airport wireless in the C2D MacBooks & MacBook Pros, it's here. It should also appear in your software update list.
The update apparently improves compatibility with 3rd party routers, and I imagine has other fixes.
Apple will continue to work on the Airport connection if there are still issues. Remember- with any new hardware release, there are bound to be software glitches initially. Apple moves quickly in my opinion to provide solutions.

  • Old MacBook 2,0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo from 2006

I have this old Macbook that i bought in 2006 , and it worked great until i droped it on the concrete and now the battery dosen't work
This also means that if the battery doesn't work the procesor will stay at 1,0 GHz(another problem)
It has bene Colecting dust for a couple of months (forgotten the macbook somewhere high in the attic-also needs some cleaning)
I want to upgrade the RAM from 1,2 GB to 4 GB
Also want a new OS (best one compatible for this model)
It also has a broken CD driver(refuses the CD's i want to insert)
And last, but not Least, it has 3 Missing buttons:"caps lock","7",and"f9"
I want to know more about where i can fix my Macbook(i want to pay only 200$!)and how much it will cost at an original Apple store.
    Thanks in advance!

I can't buy one from eBay
As I said,I live in Romania, and in Romania, if you order a Valuable item from another countrie you have to pay a border tax(from 100$-200$)
I don't want to buy a new labtop because labtops here are very expensive(for exemple,a Asus x55 costs around 400$.
But Adding all the taxes it reaches almost 600$)
    Another example:
Refurbished IPod nano 6th generation-99$(Apple store US)
    The same IPod-1000 LEI(1$=3 LEI-currency in România),about 300$
A new Macbook from late 2006 (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz,2GB RAM,white)costs about 400$(1300 LEI) in Romania
    If i pay around 300$ for a new charger,new battery,RAM upgrade,New USB optical CD driver and a 250GB hard drive,im
happy(instead of paying 400-600$ for a new macbook)

  • Replacing graphics card on Macbook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Does any know if it is possible to replace the graphics card in the 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo macbook?
I'd like to upgrade it to a card that fully supports OpenGL version 1.5
The card that is in it now only supports version 1.2

The graphics card can't be changed in a Mac other than a Mac Pro or Power Mac.

  • Can my macbook 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo take 4gb RAM?

    Hi All,
I'm sure this has been asked before, although I couldn't find a definitive answer in the forum....
Is it possible I could put 2x2gig ram into mt macbook? I currently have 1x2gig and 1x1gig installed.
I purchased my MBP Jan 07
    Cheers.

    Hey MagicDave,
    Long time, long time
I have been researching this topic as well and it can be hard to work it out. It seems to depend on which variant of the Core 2 Duo chip which you have and the model of MBP (see here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1586222&tstart=0 ). I wouldn't necessarily believe the crucial site which could be based upon the published apple specs....... ?

  • Can Macbook 4,1 (early 2008) 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo be upgraded to Mountain Lion?

I just upgraded to 4GB of memory after reading somewhere that the Macbook Model Identifier "4,1" can be upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I was surprised to read under 'how to upgrade to Mountain Lion' that Macbook's (Late 2008) are upgradable.  Aside from this upgrade being less expensive than buying a new Mac, my current Macbook runs perfectly after five years, or I wouldn't be considering an upgrade to the OS.  I've been told that Snow Leopard is the last truly solid OS from Apple, and I just got an iPhone 5 that would be more compatible with Mountain Lion.  Final note, the site that stated "4,1" is upgradable also stated that while Apple states maximum memory is 4GB, that in fact it can be maxed out at 6GB.  Optimistic until advised otherwise.
    Any input is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

OS X Mountain Lion requires a Late 2008 Aluminum or Early 2009 MacBook or later, so you can't install Mountain Lion in your Mac. Read > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
It doesn't mind that your computer is useless, because Snow Leopard is still supported and Apple updates Snow Leopard, so if you are happy with Snow Leopard, continue using that version. A lot of people say that Lion doesn't work properly with old computers, but Mountain Lion fixed most of its issues. Apart from that, the iPhone 5 is compatible with Snow Leopard in the same way as with Mountain Lion, so don't worry about that

  • Which hard drive in Macbook 2,4 GHz intel core 2 duo 2008?

I need to replace due to a break.
What is the best one and its capability?
    How much does it cost?
    Thanks in advance.

No, it is Mini Displayport and not Thunderbolt.
While Thunderbolt uses the same Mini Displayport shape, they are different. Mini Displayport will only take Mini Displayport whereas Thunderbolt will take either one.

  • I have a macbook 2,16 ghz intel core 2 duo can't install snow leopard?? Why

Apple states the following basic Snow Leopard system requirements are:

5 GB of free disk space
DVD drive (also accessible via Remote Disc) or external USB or FireWire DVD drive for installation
