2008 Macbook automatically ejects disk

I have a 2008 MacBook, Build 10K549, and am trying to install Office 2004. Everytime I put the disk into the slot drive, it trys to read (at least it sounds like it) and then ejects the disk. In fact, it has done that for all disks i have inserted (music cd's etc.). Its a CD-RW drive, model MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221. I have restarted the computer numerous times, and have even tried the disks on my Powerbook G4 (which the CD's have worked just fine). The Macbook is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Has anyone run into this problem? Possible defect from Apple?
Thank you

It could be a failing optical drive.

How do I fix an iMac that automatically ejects disks without reading them?
Have tried resetting the SMC, didn't work.
If I have to get a new drive, how much do they cost on an iMac and where do I get it fixed?
Very disappointed if we have to spend money to fix computer as we have not had this computer for a very long time and we bought a Mac because it was supposed to be better.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
Also might try one of those cleaning CDs.
Replacing it isn't very easy, but...
So we know more about it...

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.8 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mountain Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Cant get 2008 MacBook to boot from disk!

I have a refurbished 2008 MacBook Pro that runs on Snow Leopard. It fell off my sofa which started a chain reaction of the video card not working (anything colored black or darkly shadowed shows as lime green pixels) to it refusing to even start up. I have a Snow Leopard install disk which did eventually get it to reboot by pressing Command, Option and V at the same time.
It failed to instal and told me to clean the disk. So I ejected the disk, cleaned it, put it back in and tried to reinstall. It went back to the white screen and even if I press Command, Option, and V, it doesnt make it past the white screen.
I should also mention that once it rebooted, it no longer recognized the built in keyboard for some reason and I couldn't get it to work. I had to plug in my husband's G15 gaming keyboard and got it to recognize that. I don't know if that's part of my problem or not though. The install disk will also not eject now that I can't get it to reboot.
Is there anyway I can get to to reboot again or am I SOL and have to bring it to the store? I think my last OS was 10.6 something. I honestly can't remember.

Unfortunately I think you are SOL.    And yes, it may cost more than it is worth to fix.   You may just want to ensure the data is safely backed up to another drive, and find another refurbished Mac of the same age to replace it with.  Next time be more careful.

A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

    Thank you.

How did you get a Lion OSX install disc? They don't exist. Do you mean the gray disks that came with your 2007 MacBook?
If you mean the gray disks, try starting up with the "c" key held down.
What version of OSX is on your MacBook now? Have you tried booting from the Recovery partition?

  • Unable to clone hard drive from early 2008 macbook using disk utility, error 254

Attempting to upgrade my early 2008 Macbook hardrive, currently 160gb to a 250gb drive.  Using Mac Disk Utility to restore from drive in computer to the 250 gb drive currently attached via usb.  Receiving error, Could not validate source, error 254.  I know this process works as I recently upgraded our MacbookPro to 1 TB.  The 250gb drive I am attempting to clone to is from that computer.  I have formated the 250gb drive, mac osx extended journaled, guid.  Not sure how to proceed.  Suggestions?

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • 2008 Macbook OS 10.7.5 disk permission errors, freezes

    Hi, I have a 13" early 2008 MacBook 4,1, described as:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  Intel GMA X3100 144 MB
    Serial Number  W88280ZR0P6
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)-
A few days ago it froze on startup. It loaded to my home window, I could move the cursor, but couldn't click on anything.
I got around that by unplugging from the wall and the battery, then it would run all right for a short while, then freeze again.
Ran Disk Utilities, verified and repaired the disk, and then found over 1,000 disk permission errors. Permissions errors were mainly from Safari or Itunes, a typical message line reads:
Permissions differ on "Applications/ITunes.app/Contents/Resources/tr.Iproj/InforDialogue ArtworkVieww.nib",should be drwxr-xr-x, they are -rxwr-xr-x.
I have the utility repair the disk permissions, which it says it does, then clear the window, and restart. When I go back to disk utiities, all the errors are back again.
I don't know what to do next. Re-install the Operating System? Get rid of Safari? (I hardly ever use ITunes, the other main source of error messages.) Take the machine to the local Mac shop? Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How to restore Factory Settings on 2008 Macbook Original disk or Snow Leopard?

Hi, I've been browsing the forums to try and work out how to restore my 2008 Macbook to factory settings. What I can't seem to figure out is whether to use the Snow Leopard disks or the original disks that came with the computer?
    Thanks!

If you want to restore to factory settings use the discs that shipped with the computer when it was new.

How long do you leave it?
Mine can sometimes sit for quite a while (maybe 10 minutes??) before it finally finishes.
You could look at the relevant logs via Console (Utilities folder) to see if Software Update is complaining about anything.
