2008 Macbook pro 3,1 and new Iphone 5c

Any support would be apreciated -  I need to sync my new iphone 5c with my Itunes on my macbook pro 3,1. bought in aug 2008. Before I do that I want to sync my current I phone 4s which is running iOS 7.0.4 before it's recycled.
When i plug my phone in I get this:
The iPhone “LC iPhone4S” cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 11.1 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.
When I try to download and install iTunes 11.1 i get this message:
This update requires OS X version 10.6.8 or later.
Here is the spec of my macbook pro:

So here is the queston - can my macbook pro be upgraded to run on Snow Leopard or even Mountain Lion etc

I am guessing that you want to do this ASAP. Take your computer and iPhone to the Apple Store Genius explain your situation, they are very nice and customer focused. They will probably install SL or ML (your choice) as a courtesy for a fee. Make sure you back up your data first. Otherwise, you will have to purchase SL through the mail from Apple customer service.

I use two MacBook pro, two iPads and two iPhones. Upon connection and attempt to synchronize photos I receive a message that my authorization limit is exceeded. I read that iOS devices do not count against the authorization limit. One iPhone and one iPad show in the authorization list. iTunes wants to delete my purchased programs and books from the iPad to continue synchronization. What can I do?

Ok, now I do wish I could edit....
I forgot to APPLY the network settings for the USB cable to work. Connected thru USB I can tether.
So, I kept playing, and playing some more...
I had previously unpaired everything, and gone as far as removing network devices HOWEVER...
I didn't remove the Ethernet, Firewire or Airport Network devices.
Now, I have done so. I REMOVED EVERYTHING
    No pairing, no network devices.
Bluetooth was already turned off, and I rebooted.
I turned off tethering and rebooted the iphone.
I turned on bluetooth (on the MBP), I turned on tethering. I browsed for the iphone. It said I was already paired???? Ok, repair AGAIN, and THE IPHONE SHOWED MY BLUETOOTH TETHERING BLUE BAR at the top of the screen!
I opened a web page, no go... d4mn, I was close...
Opened network preferences and the created a new bluetooth PAN and voila! Internet back on the MBP. I am about to reinstall the ethernet and airport (I can live without firewire for now) and see what happens.
Basically, the link I posted two posts ago, I had already done that, but I NEEDED to remove ethernet, firewire and airport as well...
So MAYBE it's fixed, we'll see for how long. I'm not going to mark this as answered for now, because basically, it has failed for no reason, and I want to know why...
Hopefully someone can come up with something, but having to delete and reinstall all pairings and network devices (to me) is not really a solution, it's a workaround (at best).

  • Renewing a Late 2008 MacBook Pro: hard drive and battery substitution

    Hi all,
I am an happy user of a late 2008 MacBook pro.
However, with the passing of time, it became slow and the battery also deteriorate (it still quite OK, but it is not like at the beginning).
But let's start from the beginning: the hard drive
By googling for a while, I noticed that several people experienced very slow performance of their late 2008 MacBook Pro. That is also my case. Apparently, this is due to the hard disk which is dying, and then I considering to change it. However, I haven't found answers to these questions:
    - Is it possible to mirror all the containt of the current disk to the new one?
    - I only have the original installation disks of the first Leopard. I made all the updates through the network. Moreover, since it passed lot of time, I am afraid that some sector of the installation disks may be damaged. This means that I may fail in the installation of Mac Os X on the new hard drive. If I have to reinstall everything from scratch with the new hard drive and without installation disks, how should I do?
    - If I go a Mac Reseller shop, will do they perform this operation? And how much does it costs to make it? Or I may also go to some generic computer reparation guy?
    - Is it convenient to save all the data (movies, documents, pictures, emails, etc) somewhere (e.g. external HD) and then perform a completely new installation?
    Next, let's consider the battery.
Here is a screenshot taken with iStat Pro:
Do you think it is worth changing it? From System Profile I have those other info:
      Full charge capacity (mAh):          3386
           Current (mA):          846
           Voltage (mV):          12029
      Condition:          Replace soon
What do you suggest to do then? How much does it cost a new battery? Actually, I think that also the processor performance deteriorate (it often becomes very hot, especially when watching Flash or Silverlight stuff), but, unfortunately I cannot change it.

    Hi!
Thanks for all the answer. Please let me to resume this old and interesting discussion.
After having evaluated several solutions (including NAS, different ways of backup, etc) I bought an external firewire HDD, since I believe it nicely fits my necessities. Next, after these holidays, I will finally replace my old HDD with a SSD one. I think 120 GB are ok. I just need the apps and small-sized documents (rather LaTeX, Matlab, word, pages or excel documents, etc. - no movies or mp3 (I have Spotify, for that) ). Large files (e.g. movies, pictures, etc) may end up in external firewire HDD.
Now, let's consider the OS. I currently have 10.6.8 and I am very satisfied of that. I find it very stable, and all the apps I need are still well supported. On the other hand, given that there are like 5 years that I have the same installation, I may have a lot of obsolete files and setting that I can safely remove. This means that once I will have performed a backup of my documents, my email, my pictures etc. I can safely throw away all the rest. Hence, I may perform a brand-new installation of the OS. Although I am happy with 10.6.8, I was wondering if it is worth to upgrade it (I have a 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo - 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3 RAM) to Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavricks. In that case, which would be the real benefits? And what about the cons?
Finally consider that I only have the Leopard installation disks from 2008 (not even Snow Leopard) and I will bring my laptop to a techician to change the HDD (I know, it is simple but I don't have all the screws etc. and I will not buy them only for this purpose). Once he will have replaced the HDD, will he re-install the OS also? Or I have to reinstall the OS through my original DVD (5 years old, I don't even know if they still work) and upgrade to Snow Leopard again by myself? I would exclude the carbon copy solution since I may want to throw away a lot of garbage and perform a brand new instalation of the OS. How to proceed? Thanks again!

  • 2008 macbook pro beeps after installing new hard drive

I install a new hard drive in a 2008 macbook pro and it just beeps. three quick beeps repeatedly. I cloned the new drive from my 2011 macbook pro
Is anybody experience this same problem? please help
    thank you

You can't reliably use the clone from one Mac on another Mac of a different vintage.  Boot off an external hard drive after installing the operating system from Apple or the original discs on the external hard drive, and use the migration assistent to import data from the internal hard drive.  You'll want to make sure the copy on the external hard drive does not excede the internal hard drive capacity by more than 85% before cloning and overwriting its contents.

  • ICloud mail does not reconnect in Mail application on MacBook Pro after disconnecting and reconnecting iPhone or after sleep

iCloud mail does not reconnect in Mail on my MacBook Pro after sleep or after disconnecting and reconnecting my iPhone. This only happens when I use my iPhone as a 3G-modem and not when I am on Wi-Fi. The only solution seems to be to quit the Mail-application and restart it again. Then Mail reconnects to iCloud.

    Hi horstp,
Given your description of the issue (works on other Macs), it may be worth trying to set up that account by itself in a new test user on the iMac to see if it can be isolated to a user-specific file. You may find the following article helpful:

  • HT1420 I have 5 computers already authorized with my Apple ID.  How can  I add one more.  My home has 1 IMAC, 2 Macbook Pros, 1 Ipad and 2 Iphones.  Why are you now limiting me to five computers on my Apple ID when I am clearly an Apple product supporter.

I have six products in my home.  I can only authorize five using my Apple ID.  All my products are Apple - 1 IMAC, 2 MacBook Pros, 2 Iphones and 1 IPAD.  This doesn't seem right - We are so Mac'd out in our home and yet we are now being limited to the number of products we can have using the same Apple ID.  Any advice as to how to find a workable soliution to this?
    Thanks

Authorise Only Applies to Computers... Not Devices...
You state you have 1 IMAC, 2 MacBook Pros, ... this = 3 Computers... you can Authorise up to 5 computers.

Just posted a problem I'm having connecting my Jaybird Freedom and iPhone5 (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4716045). The Jaybirds connected fine with an iPhone4s and another (forgotten) device so I don't think the problem lies with the Jaybird. I'd be interested if you hear differently.

  • My 2008 Macbook pro keeps freezing and crashing as well as reseting itself, how do I fix it?, My 2008 Macbook pro keeps freezing and crashing as well as reseting itself, how do I fix it?

Most days I get a total freeze and have to hard reset. I also occasionally get the grey screen and the prompt to restart. The weirdest issue is when the Macbook just resets randomly. I've done the hardware test all ok. The logic board was replaced a while back as per the known issues with '08 MBP, graphics all ok. I'm running 10.5.8

    Anyone?

  • Late 2008 MacBook Pro Forgetting date and wifi settings

I have a 15" refurb MBP 5,1. It just started forgetting the time, date and my 802.11 settings including the WPA encryption key.
Previously I made a post in the Power Forum saying that when I plugged in the power adapter I got a message in the upper right saying "not charging" yet it really was. Now this.
I ran a repair permissions and that didn't seem to have an effect.

Happened to me the other day. First time date and wi-fi were lost. Second time only wi-fi. It has worked OK since then.
It could be the back-up battery or an intermittent problem with the Non-volatile RAM. Might be a case of back to Apple for a replacement!

  • 2.8ghz late 2008 macbook pro with 8gb  and a happy ending but...

This machine was bought on June 2009. A week after the mid 2009 were released. It was a refurbished unit which might explain it.
Ok let's get started. I am using 1x4gb crucial module & 1x4gb owc module. Why mixing brands? Well by the time I decided to go from 4gb to 6gb, I found on Amazon the 4gb Crucial module for $190 while at Owc it was at $249. 6gb was a good combination for me and my needs. However, it didn't stop me from trying 8gb even knowing that my computer wasn't capable of using them. What was next? Yeah to buy another 4gb module This time I went for something cheaper (Owc's $179) since I wasn't sure if that was going to work.
Ok enough of that and back to topic. 8gb works fine in the 32 and 64 bit kernels. I tested the 32 bit kernel for almost 12 hours with absolutely no problems. I was able to use 7.99gb flawlessly with the cpus fully stressed.
The 64 bit kernel provided the same satisfactory results. The machine felt fast and reliable at all. The only thing I notice different was the temperature. While on the 32 bit kernel the cpu reached up to 85C, on the 64 bit it reached up to 92C
I will keep testing the computer in the next days, but overall, I am pretty sure I will not have problems.

  • 2008 macbook pro spinning ball and now won't completely start up.

i woke my computer up this morning and it wouldn't respond. it started with the spinning rainbow pinwheel, but now it won't log in. the farthest it's gotten is the desktop but it's blank - no icons, dock, or top bar. is there a way to troubleshoot this or does it sound like a hardware issue? does it sound like the hard drive is crashing?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How do I connect my 2008 macBook Pro to my new iMac?

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro ( model 1261 ), and I want to use my iMac as an external monitor. The laptop has a DVI output, but no thunderbolt port, and I have tried connecting the two computers via the DVI on the laptop, and the thunderbolt port on the iMac with the appropriate cable. Unfortunately, this didn't work, ( unless I did something wrong ). I went into system preferences, but it wasn't telling me that there another screen to prioritise. Am I using the wrong cable/ports, or doing something wrong in the set-up?
Any help will be much appreciated
    Many thanks....Nick

Thanks for the reply, the iMac model is iMac12,1. late 2011. I should add that I'm not a "techy", so try and keep it simple please .
    Thanks again

  • Replacing Display housing for  Early 2008 Macbook pro. older housing ok?

Hi guys! i have the newest Penryn Early 2008 Macbook pro 2.6 and have had an accident with the aluminum of the display housing. I am currently trying to find a compatible case to replace it with. I cant seem to find spare display housing that are made particularly for the new macbook pros for some reason =(
I've heard that there are different moulds of the Display housing since there are 3 different manufacturer for the LCD screen? (LG, SAMSUNG,CHIMEI)
Would the display casings of the older Intel Macbook pro work as long as I match the manufacturer? (e.g. if i have the display casing from a samsung early 2008 macbook pro, would this be compatible with the 2006 or 2007 samsung display housing?)
i have found a case for an older samsung http://www.welovemacs.com/9227221.html and chimei here

There is a service that I have yet to try but it looks pretty reliable and they service macs in virtually every way possible. Go to macservice.com and just follow the steps and choose what you want to repair. For MacBook pro you an get the display housing replaced for about $200, I know that is a bit steep but it's the easiest way to get it repaired. If you do use it let me know how you liked it.
