2008 MacBook Pro Stuck in Restart Loop

Hi,
I will have had my MacBook Pro for just about three years this August with absolutely no problems, but just a few weeks ago it started acting very strange. It would freeze for just a few seconds at first, then seemed to progressively get worse. As time went on, it would freeze for longer amounts of time and I would inevitably have to reboot. Again, things got worse, it would freeze completely and tell me to reboot a couple of times upon restart-up, and finally when I tried to start it up one day, it told me to restart and has not booted up since.
When I press the button now, (I tried again just a few minutes ago) the Apple screen pops up for about 10-15 seconds, then the screen turns to a dark grey and the screen displays this message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." It does this over and over and over again...
I've tried to restart it in Safe-Mode, and am currently trying to find my Software that came with my computer, but my house caught on fire in January with my MacBook Pro box in my closet, so I think that they got caught in the blaze. Hopefully something can be done, has anyone else ever had this problem? Any help is appreciated!

Hey, thank you for your reply! I didn't have everything backed up, but I have a lot of my important stuff saved, though, so that's somewhat of a relief..
As far as my hard drive is concerned, would I have to send it in somewhere to get it fixed or would I just have to get a brand new one? If so, how much? Sorry if I seem a bit amateur, but this computer is my first personal computer, and I'm really lost without it!

  • Macbook Pro stuck in restart loop with fresh install

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) that I have been running Snow Leopard on up until now. I had been meaning to upgrade to Mavericks for a while, but had just never gotten around to it. Over the last month or so, my Macbook has been running really slow, hanging on the spinning beachball every few minutes for a few seconds (sometimes up to a minute or so). So I figured a clean start might be the best way to go, and while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade to Mavericks.
I backed up all my data, and then I created a Mountain Lion bootable usb (I had trouble making a Mavericks bootable usb from Snow Leopard, and since I had bought Mountain Lion for my desktop, I just decided to do a fresh install of that, and then upgrade to Mavericks). I had no problem booting to the usb, erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. However, after the install on the usb, my mac restarted and got stuck in a restart loop. It will chime, show the apple logo and spinning gears for a few seconds, then the gears stop spinning, and then the mac immediately restarts (this time displaying a message saying the mac has recovered from a shutdown in a number of languages), and the same thing happens again.
I was able to boot into the recovery partition, checked the permissions, found some that needed to be fixed, ran the repair permissions, verified the disk and was told the disk appears okay. Tried to then restart and same thing.
I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and none of these change anything. I booted in single user mode and ran fsck -fy, and recieved a message saying modifications were made, rebooted, same thing.
I have booted in verbose mode and the system restarts at the same point every time, right after displaying a message that says
SMC::smcReadKeyAction Error: (and then something with "BEMB", it goes by really fast so its hard to read exactly)
I have managed to boot into safe mode, but this has not made a difference. On one of my boots into safe mode, I went ahead and made a Mavericks bootable usb, and restarted the process: wiped the drive, installed mavericks, but I am in the exact same situation. I can still boot into safe mode.
I have seen some other issues that people have posted, but most involve the system freezing after the apple screen (not restarting) or do not involve freshly formatted HDs.
I'm just tying to find out if this is a hard drive issue, or if my mac itself needs to be retired. It has had a pretty long life (being 5 years old), and one of the RAM bays doesn't work (it is only running 4GB of ram, not sure if that can cause a problem with the boot cycle).
Sorry if thats a lot of information, I've been trouble shooting this for a few days. But thanks for any help you can offer!
    A strange note:
-when booting from the mavericks usb, I got stuck in the restart loop a couple of times. I managed to get past this by clicking the mousepad a few times right after the gears finished spinning. The mouse became visible, the apple screen shifted color a bit (went from a bluish gray tint to an orangish gray tint), the mouse became visible, and I got to the reinstall menu as normal. As far as I can tell the clicking may have been coincidental, but it was the only time I was able to boot the usb, and I wasn't going to risk restarting to test that, and then not be able to boot again.

  • Brand new macbook pro stuck on restart screen

Brand new Macbook Pro is stuck looping on the Restart screen. I bought in Australia, but live in PNG who has no Apple support. Anyway I can fix it easily?

Contacted support and was talked through a safe boot.
    Now everything is fine.

  • MacBook Pro Stuck in Recovery Loop; Disk Utility Error

I am getting the error: Disk Utility Stopped Repairing "disk0s2" - says disk utility can't repair the disk and I will need to reformat the disk and restore my files. This appears to be the startup disk (could be wrong) - as I am currently in recovery mode and any time I reboot, I am taken back to recovery mode and there are no start-up disks available to be selected.
When I run Disk Utility on my Internal HD (or what appears to be - this is 250 GB Hitachi) - I get the all clear that everything appears to be working correctly.
I do have TMbackups saved to a NAS. My MacBook Pro has been running very slowly as of recent (slight boost after upgrading to Yosemite, but then returned to slow performance).
I am running OS X Server on it - and have considered migrating that to a Mac Mini (yet to be purchased) - but want to get a better idea of options before I pull that trigger. I also want to make sure my MacBook Pro is recoverable and can still be used.
    1. What is the risk of reformatting just the startup disk "disk0s2"? Is that even possible?
    2. Is MacBook Pro in need of service at the apple store? Or can this be completed by me? (I have above average ability, but no wizard)
    3. My logic on best practice to recover MBP and then add Mac Mini, migrating OS X Server to it: (all recommendations/suggestions welcome)
    a. reformat MBP startup disk
    b. restore TMbackup
    c. use migration wizard to migrate OS X Server to Mac Mini
    d. reformat MBP again, starting from scratch and install fresh copy of Yosemite
I had also considered just a fresh build of OS X Server on a new Mac Mini and starting fresh with the MBP. I don't use a ton of services on OS X Server so think my rebuild would be less time intensive than most.
    Appreciate all the feedback.

Well, your hard drive (flash storage) is good, at least. Here's what I would try next (before making a trip to the Apple Store or an AASP):
Boot into your Recovery partition and reinstall OS X. This won't damage or erase any of your user files, etc., just give you a fresh installation of Mountain Lion. Since your hardware seems to be OK, it could be that the system has just become corrupt and reinstalling it may 'fix' the problem.
Call back if that doesn't work...

  • 2008 Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 Randomly restarts

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 and it randomly tells me I need to restart while I'm in the middle of doing something. It's not consistant with any specific program I don't think (possibly firefox). The gray screen comes up telling me there was a problem and I need to restart my computer. Sometimes it happens multiple times in a sitting. Any solutions?
It does seem to overheat a lot, but I don't know if that's directly related or separate.

How to perform a "clean install" of Flash Player in Mac OS X
Follow those steps TO THE LETTER. They'll have you running again soon.

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

  • 2008 MacBook Pro 17" eats airport cards

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro which was under AppleCare support and had it's AirPort card replaced several times. A few weeks after the support expired, again the last card Apple put in started to fail and soon became unusable. The local apple store refused to help despite the long history them having to replace the card over and over. I bought one on eBay and it was fine for four months and then it too failed.
This is very strange but it seems this unit is somehow burning it's AirPort card. I installed a temperature monitor software and the temps looked fine to me. Could it be overvoltage supplied to the card? I've search online and not found any reports of similar issues with this model.
    Symptoms:
1: Networking over AirPort stops working. Turning AirPort off and then back on results in it staying off...will not come back on. Hard restart helps but it fails same way a short time later.
2: The system totally freezes. Cursor stops moving, last sound in progress loops. Game graphics (World of Warcraft) sort of keeps going with animations but the UI is non responsive.
Depsite the temps looking ok to me, my feelign is I have not monitored it to much and do not know what is a valid max temp so, maybe it's cooking them. It did seem like letting it cool off helps though, maybe it is just letting it sit for awhile because sometimes just quick restart helped for a while (minutes).
Makes sense? Should I push Apple to get this fixed? They knew it kept destroying AirPort cards and they never fixed that issue.
Note Apple also replaced the motherboard at one point due to NVIDIA GPU issue. Also they replaced the battery as it was swelling so bad it stopped the trackpad button from working.

I suspect a loose cable in the display connection, try cleaning the ports and reconnect the cables.
you can take this to a shop,
    or

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro doesn't boot after installing Mavericks

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro, dual core 2.53 GHZ, 4 GB Ram (2x2).
I've been tearing my hair out trying to get this computer to boot up.  Many things have been tried here.  So here's the history.
Before starting this, I was running 10.6.8 on this computer.
First time I tried to install Mavericks, the installation failed, and when the computer went to restart, it just went in a loop, never really booting up, just getting the to gray screen with the apple symbol, spinning the wheel, and then going black again, restarting, and repeat.  So, I took it into the Apple Genius Bar, and they diagnosed a bad battery.  I replaced the battery, and had them do a clean restore back to 10.6.8.
I got it home, and tried to do an install again.  This time, I downloaded the installer, and put in on an external firewire drive, and attempted to do a clean install of Mavericks.  I ended up with the same boot failure problem.
I went back to the apple genius bar, and even though the diagnotics said my harddrive was fine, they said in the troubleshooting list, that the harddrive with the first thing they suspected.  So, I replaced the harddrive.  I did the Mavericks install again from an external HD, and for a moment, everything was great.  It booted up into Mavericks.  But, after my first restart, the problem was boot failure was back.
After reading a few articles, I tried booting in Safe mode.  That worked.  I also ran disk repair on the HD and it looked great.  Still, it won't boot up out of Safe mode.
After being very frustrated, I tried just installing snow leopard from the dvd, but the install keeps failing.
Not sure what to do next.

    Micajah10,
rather than a hard drive problem, you might have a faulty internal SATA cable. Do you have an external disk enclosure, or a SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FireWire adapter? If you can boot from your hard drive without problems when it’s external, but it remains problematic internally, then that could point to the internal SATA cable as the culprit.

  • Blurred/hazy screen visibility 2008 macbook pro

    Hi,
My screen of my 2008 macbook pro (OS X 10.6.8) keeps becoming blurred/hazy. It is as if you are looking out of a condensationed window. A few weeks ago, while reading a newspaper, the screen went all of a sudden blurred/hazy for a few seconds. The way it blurred was as if a new blurry screen was put over my screen. Later on these moments lasted longer and longer and now it is blurred/hazy since yesterday evening.
All software is up to date.
    I tried:
    - shutting down and (re)starting incl. disconneting cables and battery,
    - starting up and holding 'ctrl' key and scrolling up & down and then restart,
    - removing the battery for 30 sec + holding 'alt'+'cmd'+'p'+'r' keys,
    - the short hardware test I tried to do with the DVD I got when I purchased it in 2008 (holding 'D' key), seems to stuck after a while (I waited more than an hour twice before removing it),
    - changed and rechanged the settings of my screen,
    - checked for malware and downloaded the security update 2011- 005 (snow leopard),
    - Called the Apple helpdesk but they where not familiar with the problem
Does anybody knows what to do?
    Thanks

I uswed to have that problem in my Macbook OPro early 2008, and I ordered an LCD panel, it's a Samsung 15.4 inches LED panel, then I disassembled MBP, involved more than 40 screws and very delicate parts removal and reassemble. It cost me US$ 120 and 2.5 ghours to do.
But if you take it to Mac Service Center, they will change the whole lid and thjat will copst you more than US$ 600

  • Unpredictable reboots on my early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mavericks

    Hello,
    My situation:
    1) First problem I encountered was kernel panic on startup. I fixed it fixed by replacing new AppleSMC.kext by older one from 10.8.* version I suppose  (i used KextWizard).
    2) Time after time MacBook restarts and then shows white screen with a message "your computer restarted because of a problem" (or something very similar). I'm able to start system after Cmd+Option+P+R and safe mode.
    3) If I don't use the way described in point 2, I receive kernel panics with reboot (screenshots made in verbose boot mode attached).
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Having "performed all of the iSight Troubleshooting", you have already reinstalled OS X, Firefox, and Chrome, updated all of them to the latest versions, uninstalled all third-party mirroring software, and tested in more than one OS X login user account.
If you now restart your Mac and launch only Photo Booth, does not the PB window now display the image your camera is viewing?
If the answer is no, even for the simple Photo Booth app, we are left wondering how scratch.mit.edu (a Flash-based web site) can find a working camera when using the Chrome browser.
If the answer is still no, my first suggestion would be to click the "Check Now" button in your  > System Preferences... > Flash > Advanced menu command.  If there is a later update, apply it, and test your camera again using Apple's iSight troubleshooting suggestions.
If you were already using the current Flash version, or if updating it does not change any troubleshooting results, I would try reinstalling OS X one more time in case you had a bad download or install on your previous try.  Then test again with Apple's troubleshooting suggestions.

  • Will a Macbook pro early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15

My collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15 inch keeps getting stuck on the apple load up screen everytime he hits the power button. He doesnt know what version it is and I forgot to write down the model number of it(Ill update May 16 at 10am PST). I tried safe mode, it worked but after the loading bar gets close to 1/2 it freezes up. He can not find his installation disc that came with the computer. I have mine but its for Model # A1278 I think its snow leopard. Will the installation disc and application disc run successfully on my collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro?
I apologize if there's a similar thread out there, I couldnt find one. -

    No it will not.
Machine specific gray/back disks are for one model of Mac only as they only contain hardware drivers for that model, not previous ones.
The 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disk will work and it's available from Apple online for a small charge.

This is indicative of a problem with the boot drive and the file structure retaining data on the drive.
The progress bar progressing and stopping means the fsck drive repair is failing, likley the drive incurred head shock damage at that point.
The boot drive itself is likely fine and the problem can be resolved but the disks are going to be required if it's running Snow Leopard.
First get the disks, then attempt Disk Utility > Repair Disk and check the SMART status if the drive is still good.
If there is no backup of data, get that off the machine using a external boot drive.
To fix that problem of a bad sectors, unfortutly the entire drive will need to be Zero Erased (security option > zero all data) using Disk Uility while c or option/alt key booted from the 10.6 disks (using a wired or built in keyboard), it's the only way.
This means all programs, files (remaining) and OS X will be removed in the process. You could replace the drive also.

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.

  • Early 2008 Macbook Pro Should I upgrade to 6gb ram and SSD?

In the last few months, I've entered the world of 64-bit computing. I learned that this now means that my Early 2008 Macbook Pro, that has been fantastic and flawless for 6 years, needs an upgrade or replacement. I'm hard-hard stuck on whether I should upgrade it or replace it.
    My current configuration is:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Storage 200 GB SATA Disk
I need to run OSX Mavericks and Windows 7 in VMWare or Bootcamp (I don't really like bootcamp).
    I am eyeing two upgrades
    1) Crucial 4GB Single DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) CL5 SODIMM 200-Pin Notebook Memory Module CT51264AC667
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RB21JY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1& smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    2) Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD1
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-adapter-Internal-CT240M500SSD1/dp/B00BQ8R M1A/ref=sr_1_10?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392961391&sr=1-10&keywords=ssd
My question is: Is it worth it for me max out my computer by upgrading again for $250? Will this hold me over for another 2-3 years, or should I look to replace?

Well, I have researched and researched and researched and come to a conclusion. I've compared many brand new replacement computers, and also reviewed my options for upgrading my computer. Upgrading to a new computer altogether, I have come across a few very attractive offers, but they're all in the $800+ price range.
I've decided that OSX Mavericks is my main issue. My early 2008 Macbook Pro was 100% perfectly sufficient for everything I needed it for when using OSX Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, VMWare Fusion runs like a sloth and everything else runs like a slug (maybe a slug that had a 5 hour energy...). Seriously. Just now, I am running Safari and MS Word while copying files to my backup drive. The beachball is all over the place, whereas the CPU is only at 15% use and RAM is at 3.97/4.00. I'm barely using the computer, and it's ridiculously hot and the fans are screaming.
First thing I'm going to do is 'upgrade' back to Snow Leopard to recover my RAM and regain the ability to effectively run my VMWare virtual machine. Then, I'm going to opt for the $100 upgrade to total 6GB of RAM and $150 upgrade to a SSD.

  • Early 2008 macbook pro will not boot

Good morning!  Last night I was working on compiling some video footage from a DVD on my early 2008 MacBook Pro.  I put the computer to sleep with a DVD in the drive.  This morning it will not wake up and it won't boot--I never make it to the apple logo.  I do hear either a fan or the DVD drive for a moment.
Any ideas?  I'm kind of stuck here.  Thanks,Robby

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Also hold the trackpad button down when you reboot so the DVD ejects.
If it doesn't eject, see this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1015
And note, any attached USB device may not support Energy Saver.  Keep those removed until you reboot, after putting the machine to sleep.

Trying to help out my girlfriend to figure out why her macbook is running so slow when its peviously been fine. Have gone through most of the easy options, having cleared a bunch of space from the HD previously which hasn't helped. Running OSX 10.6.6 Hoping that someone will see something in etrecheck that'll help me out. Any other advice would be great.
    Cheers.
