2008 Macbook Pro won't turn on

Quick question before I go to the Apple store-
Recently updated my 2008 Macbook Pro to Yosemite. Ran into a ton of issues involving WiFi and Java 6 but resolved them relatively easily and it was smooth sailing for a bit. Today, I booted it up as normal, got to my desktop and then it immediately goes into sleep mode. I hit the spacebar and it shut itself down. Now when I hit the power button I get nothing. No fans, no boot sound, nothing. The indicator on the charger is steady green and the side LEDs all light up just fine. Am I totally screwed???

You might try replacing or checking the individual RAM modules you have installed on your computer. As pointed out previously, this might be a problem.
I have a MBP 17" (Mt. Lion).  I had plugged in a usb cord to sync my iphone and the MBP just died.  Wouldn't power on, resettting SMC didn't work.  The magsafe would be green briefly and then just start flashing really fast, and also very dimly.  This was with a couple of different power adapters so it wasn't the adapter.  Finally took it to the Apple Store.  Genius bar guy took it in back and said that there was something wrong, he unplugged the battery and it still wouldn't start, so it wasn't the battery and I also think he said that he did a motherboard reset.  That also didn't work.  So I spent $300 to get the motherboard looked at.  It was returned several days later and the only thing the paperwork said was the RAM was bad and they replaced it.  I had replaced the original RAM with 2 X 8Gb of third party stuff.  This was working until I plugged in the usb, so it didn't seem like that should be the problem, but  Apple replaced with 2 X 4Gb of RAM (and gave me back my 2X 8Gb sticks) and the computer works, no motherboard replacement, just the RAM.  I didn't think that both of the 8Gb ram sticks could be bad, so I checked each of the 8Gb sticks in the computer, and what do you know?  Both 8Gb of memory work, and I've since replaced the Apple memory with the both of the third party 8gb sticks and the computer works again.  What the problem was I don't know and now it seems to be working just like it used to.  So you might check the RAM you have and you might determine you have a bad dimm or it just resets something so that things work again.

    You did the SMC Reset, however there are other "no start" links from Apple, including MagSafe issues
    If none of those work and your machine charged overnight with still nothing, then it's a call to hardware repair.

    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
    If this doesn't work then you will need to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch:
    Erase and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When completed quit DU and complete the Snow Leopard installation.

    Depends upon what you mean by it not turning on, there are various causes.
    Is the power button pressed and nothing happens? Disconnect all other devices, then a SMC and NVRAM reset.
    Is there a white screen and nearly nothing? A hosed EFI firmware.
    Is there a grey screen and a loading bar that gets stuck? Either a failed firmware update or corrupted drive/OS X.
    Is there a grey screen with a spinning wheel? Bad third party or Apple at boot kext file.
    Are you loading but not able to log in? Possible corrupt third party software designed to startup upon login.

    You need to hit the "reply" button on post to whom your responding too, it's hard to tell if your responding to me or someone else.
    small button on the side of the computer and didn't lightting up( no reponse at all). is their any problems do think with the battery?
    Usually if your battery is dead because it wasn't charged you can do the SMC Reset and then check the Magsafe if it's connected and showing the orange light, then let the battery charge up.
    Once the battery charges up, the computer will boot normally and then you have to reset the PRAM, time, date etc.

The power cord has the green "charged" light, but when I plugged it in, it wasn't charged and never did charge (the light never was orange). The computer worked perfectly this morning.

    My 2.4 GHz 4GB RAM Early 2008 MacBook Pro wont boot after downloaded the Lion 10.7.1 upate. Upon restarting the screen went dead and now the system does not boot, as if the bootloader has been wiped out. Screen appears dead but was known to be working before hand. The hard drive spins up but doesn't sound like it is searching for data.

    Okay, I tried everything I can think of last night. I removed every startup process and every tool or programm that goes deeper into the system (GlimmerBlocker, LittleSnitch, Parallels). Cleaned Up every Cache I could find and refreshed every necessary Cache or Database possible. Took me a couple of hours. But still no luck - the machine doesn't boot, just in safe mode. Right now I copy all my personal stuff to a new external harddrive because TimeMachine doesn't work, after this I will do a clean install of Lion.
    It's not hardware related, it's the 10.7.1 update that doesn't work properly. By the way, the only errors remaining are:
    WindowServer - kCGErrorFailure
    ManagedClient - kCGErrorFailure: CGSPackageGetWorkspaceType: couldn't get workspace type
    SecurityAgent - kCGErrorFailure: CGSPackageGetWorkspaceType: couldn't get workspace type
    and a lot of:
    com.Apple.SecurityAgent.00000000-0000-0000-0000-0000000186A7: CoreAnimation: rendering error 506
    that's also the last one I get before the system hangs…
