2008 Macbook Pro won't wake up - can't force reboot
I have searched the interwebs high and low on this one for a long time and haven't found a solution, I post now in desperation as I need my mac urgently.
Every once in a while my mac will not wake from sleep, the problem has persisted now for over a year and even a trip to the genius bar didn't help.
I've read many a post on macs not waking up, but in all of them a force restart is possible. Not here, in my case the mac will simply not wake up no matter what, until hours or sometimes days later it simply wakes up again like nothing happened. Last time it occurred I took it to the genius bar (a fair hike for me) and sure enough, it woke up first time. They ran all kinds of tests and nothing was wrong.
I've tried all the zapping of prams and resetting of power systems, I've tried every key combination I can think of, whilst some seem to do something - make the light flash or turn off, get the fans chugging, make little 'computer' noises etc, it just never wakes up. It never shows up on the network, it never makes the startup chime or any other system noises, it really is in a state of hibernation.
If I close the lid, the light on the front glows bright, if I open the lid it gets dull. If I force shut down it goes off completely. But hitting the power button brings it back on (to dull). Holding the power button down to force reboot causes the light to flash rapidly but then nothing happens.
Removing the battery, letting the battery drain, or unplugging the magsafe makes no difference.
All I can ever do is wait, and wait, and so far each time it has just eventually come back to life when it was good and ready, usually around two days later.
When it does, the screen I left is usually still there, just how I left it, only its black and white and a little progress bar chugs along for a few seconds and then its all back to normal, even apps I left open are still there running, like it was really just asleep the whole time.
If anyone has any ideas at all I'd be most appreciative.
Well, if You or Genius did all things like PRAM, SMC reset, etcetera, why not read threads about the sleep/wake issue? There you'll see that this is not a uncommon problem.
I solved it by setting the hibernatemode to 0 (zero) via a Terminal command:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
Then you can get rid of the sleepimage (pagefile) like this:
sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
(sleepimage is as great as your built-in memory (in my case 8GB)).

Macbook Pro Won't Wake From Deep Sleep
I'm having issues from my Macbook Pro waking from a deep sleep after my battery dies. If the battery dies and it goes into sleep, my Macbook Pro won't wake even if it's connected to power. I can remove the battery, hold down the power button, press keys and nothing happens.
I know the obvious thing is to not let the battery die, but I don't always work near outlets.
I've tried resetting the nvram and smc and nothing has worked. I'm probably going to bring it into Apple soon, but I really can't be without my computer for class.Yes, I've tried that. It doesn't work. I've left the battery in, I've taken it out and left it out for a bit and nothing seems to work. It just turns back on whenever it feels like it.
I just had a sort of similar issue with a restart (no dead battery this time though). After my computer shutdown from a restart, it didn't want to boot back up. After holding down the power button and doing a few other things, I gave up. Then I closed the lid and set it down. It then decided to turn itself on.
I think I'm going to bring it in. I do massive amounts of design and web work on this thing and I can't have it messing up. -
OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep.
Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.
I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple. -
Early 2008 MacBook Pro won't boot after Lion 10.7.1 update
My 2.4 GHz 4GB RAM Early 2008 MacBook Pro wont boot after downloaded the Lion 10.7.1 upate. Upon restarting the screen went dead and now the system does not boot, as if the bootloader has been wiped out. Screen appears dead but was known to be working before hand. The hard drive spins up but doesn't sound like it is searching for data.
Can anyone help me?Okay, I tried everything I can think of last night. I removed every startup process and every tool or programm that goes deeper into the system (GlimmerBlocker, LittleSnitch, Parallels). Cleaned Up every Cache I could find and refreshed every necessary Cache or Database possible. Took me a couple of hours. But still no luck - the machine doesn't boot, just in safe mode. Right now I copy all my personal stuff to a new external harddrive because TimeMachine doesn't work, after this I will do a clean install of Lion.
It's not hardware related, it's the 10.7.1 update that doesn't work properly. By the way, the only errors remaining are:

My 2008 MacBook Pro Won't Turn
Hi everybody,
I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, and it just won't turn on. When I hit the power button, the white LED light in the front flickers for a second, and then shuts off.
If I hold down the power button, the computer sounds like it will turn on and the disc drive starts spinning, but within 5 seconds the lights begins to flicker and the whole thing shuts off again.
I have tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm getting desperate!

Quick question before I go to the Apple store-
Recently updated my 2008 Macbook Pro to Yosemite. Ran into a ton of issues involving WiFi and Java 6 but resolved them relatively easily and it was smooth sailing for a bit. Today, I booted it up as normal, got to my desktop and then it immediately goes into sleep mode. I hit the spacebar and it shut itself down. Now when I hit the power button I get nothing. No fans, no boot sound, nothing. The indicator on the charger is steady green and the side LEDs all light up just fine. Am I totally screwed???You might try replacing or checking the individual RAM modules you have installed on your computer. As pointed out previously, this might be a problem.
I have a MBP 17" (Mt. Lion). I had plugged in a usb cord to sync my iphone and the MBP just died. Wouldn't power on, resettting SMC didn't work. The magsafe would be green briefly and then just start flashing really fast, and also very dimly. This was with a couple of different power adapters so it wasn't the adapter. Finally took it to the Apple Store. Genius bar guy took it in back and said that there was something wrong, he unplugged the battery and it still wouldn't start, so it wasn't the battery and I also think he said that he did a motherboard reset. That also didn't work. So I spent $300 to get the motherboard looked at. It was returned several days later and the only thing the paperwork said was the RAM was bad and they replaced it. I had replaced the original RAM with 2 X 8Gb of third party stuff. This was working until I plugged in the usb, so it didn't seem like that should be the problem, but Apple replaced with 2 X 4Gb of RAM (and gave me back my 2X 8Gb sticks) and the computer works, no motherboard replacement, just the RAM. I didn't think that both of the 8Gb ram sticks could be bad, so I checked each of the 8Gb sticks in the computer, and what do you know? Both 8Gb of memory work, and I've since replaced the Apple memory with the both of the third party 8gb sticks and the computer works again. What the problem was I don't know and now it seems to be working just like it used to. So you might check the RAM you have and you might determine you have a bad dimm or it just resets something so that things work again. -

All that cursor means is that it is busy trying to do something. You can see if force quitting solves the problem with a simple force quit using command-option-escape. If you are having issues with iCal quitting, sometimes it doesn't always know whether or not it is properly communicating with a particular calendar. This can be a Mobileme issue, or even a phone synchronization issue, or a network issue reaching a shared calendar. Shutting down a machine directly from a cursor is the last step one should try, only after all others have failed. If you have done this in the past, lurking corruption can get worse each time with the directory, and upgrading the system will only enhance any corruption already present. When you restart your Mac, does everything appear to be normal? -
MacBook Pro Won't wake after going to sleep.
I have been having this issue for quite sometime now. My 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) will go to sleep and then not respond when trying to wake. This only happens when my computer goes to sleep with the display open (usually when watching DVD's or writing papers). The indicator light stays bright and the only way to get it responding again is to shut the whole thing down by holding the power button I have searched the forms and can't find anything that has worked... I have cleared the PRAM and reset the SMC as it said to do on other posts on these forms, but nothing has worked. I have run all OS X updates and firmware updates. I'm running on 10.6.2.
I have heard it could be the Bluetooth or an external drive attached... neither of them are on my mac.
Should I take it into the apple store? Or has someone figured this out?

I was able to get to an apple store this past weekend, and let me tell you... I'm about finished with there great "support".
Right before I went to the store, I tried to eject a disk. Well the cloth in the SuperDrive (I assume to protect the drive from dust and such) Pulled up with my disk. So I get the Apple store, describe my problem and what happened with the cloth piece. The "Genius" writes up a form and tells me they have to run diagnostic and it will take a couple days... and I will get a call when its done (1-3 days).
Well on day number 3 I called up the store and they told me it was ready to be picked up? I asked if anything had been fixed and they told me they could not reproduce my "sleep issue", so they couldn't fix that.. but told me the cloth piece in the SuperDrive had been fixed.
I drive an hour (one way) to the Apple store to find that all they did was PULLED OUT the cloth... they did not replace it! So basically I have a hole for a Super Drive.
I asked why I was not called to say that my computer was ready to be picked up... didn't get an answer on that one.
I asked why my SuperDrive was said to be fixed, when nothing was done... they told me that it would have to be sent out to the factory store for that to be fixed (FIRST TIME THEY MENTIONED THAT!) Oh, and that would take 5-7 business days. Well that's not going to happen right now considering I'm a college student that NEEDS a working computer!
So I go home, angry... start just putting all my important documents back on the computer. And the screen starts blinking!!!! I guess now I have the same thing described in another post on these forms...
Lets just say that I'm not very happy with Apple right now! If anybody else has success on either the sleep issue or the screen blinking issue, please let me know!

MacBook pro won't wake from sleep must remove battery
We have an early 2008 15" C2D MacBook pro. Frequently when we put it to sleep, it won't wake up. It doesn't respond to the power button. We have to pull the battery, wait a few minutes reinstall it and reboot.
What should we check out? Or are we better off taking it to the Store and getting it fixed. It's under Applecare.When my late 2007 C2D MBP started doing that, it was after traveling with the computer. I finally reviewed the system log to find that, on attempting to wake, the computer was looking for the network at a hotel where we had stayed.
I opened System Preferences > Network, selected "Airport" and clicked on "Advanced." On the first tab is a list of networks the computer has remembered. I found the hotel network name and deleted it, along with about a dozen other now-remote networks accumulated during travel. I also unchecked "Remember any network this computer has joined."
Works fine now. All that show are the two local networks I use the most: one for home and another for a museum where I volunteer.
Easy to try, although I agree with tjk to have the Apple Store document the issue in case it proves to be something more sinister. -
Macbook pro won't wake up when booted into Windows 7
Macbook Pro (Late 2010) with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 64bit. Bootcamp 3.3
When booted into OS X, then close the lid, let the machine sleep and later, if I connect to power source and USB keyboard and mouse, and then tap keyboard, machine wakes up.
If booted into Windows 7, if I follow same sequence, the machine won't wake up. The only way I can wake the machine up is by opening the lid.
Not a big problem, but certainly an annoyance.
Can anybody help?Did you use a geniune windows installation disc? I ask this because I worked on a computer today where someone had tried to use a Windows XP disc that came with a Dell computer. These do not work.
If it was a genuine install disc, did you get all the way through with the installation, or did something go wrong during the install? -
2008 MacBook Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD or Target Disk
Yesterday I was working on my MacBook Pro. I use FontExplorer to manage fonts. I ran the conflicts diagnostic looking for missing font files, which returned about 200 results (I was expecting this). I've moved the fonts installed by Adobe/Microsoft out of my fonts folder in my user library (user library, not system). For some reason the computer started to become very slow, to the point of beachballing. The freezing seemed to start and stop. I was able to close FontExplorer and Illustrator without force-quitting. I tried to shut it down gracefully at that point but it froze up again, so I hit the power button to force a restart. It started up but now it hangs on the gray screen right before the Apple logo. The logo doesn't come up, I can hear the drive spinning as normal but it doesn't do anything.
I've tried booting from a retail copy of the Snow Leopard, but it doesn't work. I can hear the disc spin up in the DVD drive as though the computer is about to read it, but nothing happens. It just stays on that same blue screen. I've tried booting my MBP in Target Disk mode from my iMac. The target disk icon appears, however it just sits in the middle of the screen and my drive doesn't mount on the iMac. I've noticed now that the white status light on the front of the MBP (on the latch) doesn't come on, and if I cover the speakers the backlight doesn't turn off.
What do I do now? I have an enclosure I could use to try and boot the MBP's drive from, but I'm running out of options. I'm really starting to worry about my data. I have a major school project that's already late which is on there, and I don't have a recent backup. If I don't hand it in... let's not go there. I don't understand how this could happen; I take very good care of my computer, I turn it off when it's not in use, and I run Cocktail on it once a day which does a SMART status check.

The first thing I tried was booting from the install disk. The 2008/2009 MBP's aren't able to boot from a retail DVD of Snow Leopard, which is why I ended up using the original hardware-specific install disk that shipped with my computer. That didn't boot either. I was able to view the drive in Disk Utility when it was in the enclosure, but the partition with my data on it would not mount. I attempted a repair disk on the drive but that failed. It wouldn't mount in Terminal either. I considered trying to rebuild the volume catalog using TechTool Pro but there's the possibility that could actually make things worse. So I've taken it to the repair shop. They're running it through DiskWarrior overnight, last I heard there were 60-something thread errors. Yesterday my SMART status was fine, today my drive is dead. What happened? Hoping for the best (but expecting the worst). -
MacBook Pro won't wake up my lexmark printer...
After my Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901 printer goes into energy saver mode or to "sleep" I can not wake it up by printing from my MacBook Pro.
I can wake it up if I turn on my netbook and try to print and never had problems with the PC that was connected previously.
The printer is connected wireless by a netgear router.
All drivers and firmware are up to date.
Usually turning it off by unplugging the printer and then back on fixes it.
This doesn't happen ALL the time but 90% of the time. The only time it wouldn't happen was one of the days I actually had a lexmark consultant on the phone that kind of knew what they were talking about. Any time I've called when it wasn't working the person I'm talking to has no clue.
Any fixes out there?!?!?!?
PLEASE HELP!!!!Have read all through this thread trying to resolve my Rip Van Winkle problem with my MacBook Pro late 2011 and cannot get to the first stage of having the machine turn on to try the other suggestions.
Machine was on, left alone for a short while, went to sleep and have been unable to awake it, period. How are you folks getting your machines on to try the other things? Any suggestions as to actually get the machine on?? Am using older G4 machine currently.

Macbook pro won't wake up and runs extremely hot while in sleep mode
I have a mid 2011 baseline 15in Macbook Pro that has been acting up since upgrading to Mountain Lion. When I put it into sleep mode the machine runs extremely hot and won't wake up without a hard shutdown. This happens about 25% of the time. Any ideas?
Sorry I meant OS Maverick, not Mountain Lion. Everything worked fine on Mountain Lion.
