2008 Macbook problems?

My screen is messed up. The screen separates into stips and it looks like a tv when there's a storm... sort of. Then ig goes white... I can still hear if I'm playing music or a video so the problem is obviously with the screen... It keeps taking longer and longer to fix it (I usually just bang it a little and it goes back to normal for about 2 minutes) so is there nay way I can fix it? Any help is appreciated

Hey
Try a laptop cooling stand mate, they are quite effective. Also, never use your Mac on a soft surface like a pillow or your lap. And the most important thing is to make sure there isn't anything blocking the air vents.
Run an OS X update to check for fixes.
You could also try resetting the SMC.

That may fix your fans incase they aren't cooling properly.
Hope I helped and good luck

  • My 2008 MacBook Pro screen has now got interference across the whole screen. It looks similar to a pre-cable interference from bad reception. What is the problem here?

My 2008 MacBook Pro has interference across the full screen. It looks similar to a pre-cable TV screen with bad reception. Any idea of what the problem might be?

Took it to the Apple Store, they determined it's my screen that's messed up (they connected to another monitor, and since the lines didn't mirror onto the monitor it couldn't have been my GPU making the lines but rather the screen itself), so not connected to my wifi issue or a potential logic board issue, so I'm going to get my screen, wifi card, and trackpad (it's been failing too but that wasn't urgent at all) replaced for $330 using their flat-rate repair service which is much better than I imagined in terms of price.

  • 2008 macbook overheating problems. SOS!

I have had macbook 2008 aluminum body since November 2008. It was a dream for two years until it started overheating & slowing down whenever I'd be browsing the internet on safari, firefox or opera with the cooling fans working overtime. It also occurs when I use a MSOffice applications, Preview, etc., leaving me with a very fancy machine with very limited use. Also, extended use of my macbook with the heating problem tends to cause it to go into sleep mode without much warning (imagine suddenly seeing a black screen & irresponsive mac in your lap!) & it has to be left to "cool off" for about 10-15 minutes before it is usable again.
I've been told it's a hardware glitch that needs to be fixed & it is also the reason why the base of the macbook to sink/curve slightly upwards. This problem is said to occur in white 2008 macbooks as well, which I came to know while discussing with a few friends of mine who own that particular model.
Any help on the matter (i.e. solutions) will be welcome. I live in Pakistan.

  • 2008 Macbook Air Screen Hinge Problem

Hi all, so my 2008 Macbook Air's hinge got a little loose, and I was told Apple would replace it for free, so I took it to them. HUGE MISTAKE. After the hinge was replaced the screen didn't fully line up when the laptop was closed and the screen started going out like once every 2 weeks, but only for like a tenth of a second so I never really thought it was a problem. It never did this before Apple fixed the loose hinge. About 6 months after the hinge was replaced, it started doing it daily, and shortly after that it did it every time I open the laptop, so now it officially is a problem for me. I brought it back to Apple and they told me that I would have to pay for an expensive new repair or buy a new laptop, even after I explained to them that the laptop was perfectly fine before they replaced the hinge. They said I should have come within 3 months, but I was back at school and it was not a problem at all then, nor did I think it would be. I brought it to a 3rd party repair shop and they did not open the laptop but they said it looks like the screen cable is being pinched by the new hinge since it is not lined up perfectly. Is there anything that can be done or do I have to buy a new laptop?

I'm a college student with no car or Apple store nearby and the laptop was shipped back to me because of that. If I had to go another week without a laptop that would have been disasterous, but more importantly I had no way of knowing it would stop working or that the slight misalignment was anything other than cosmetic, I'm no tech genius and I clearly wasn't the one who put the laptop together wrong. It wasn't even my fault the hinge got loose in the first place! Sigh, I suppose if they can't make this right I hope I can learn to use Windows.

I have a 2008 MacBook. When I go to start it up the normal grey apple screen with the spinning gear comes up, but then it switches to a blank blue screen with the spinning gear. It just switches between the two screens continuously and will not start up. I tried taking the battery out but it didnt work. Any help?

  • Does anyone know about the WIFI problems with the late 2008 Macbook 2.0?

    I need a Macbook but I can't afford a new one.  So I'm looking into purchasing a late-2008 Macbook 2.0.
In my research I came accross a review which said that they were having some problems with WIFI and attributed it to the metal case.
Has anyone heard of this problem and has anyone found a solution for it?
    Thanks for your help.

  • 2008 Macbook Pro overheating problems

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro that I recenetly upgraded to Lion, it seems like Lion has made the overheating issues worse. My fan is almost constantly running despite being on a cool table. Is there anything I can do to make the overheating stop? I have tried resetting the battery but that did nothing. Thanks!

    Try resetting the SMC:

If that does not help, install iStat pro (from the Internet-free) and post the temperatures and applications that you are using at the time.

  • Wi-Fi Problems on my Early 2008 MacBook runnning OS X 10.7.5

Hello. I have a Early 2008 MacBook running OS X 10.7.5. When I first got my Macbook for Christmas, it had OS X 10.5.x, and the Wi-Fi connection was running fine, even when I was two rooms away from the router. Then I bought and installed OS X 10.6.3, and then later 10.6.8, and the Wi-Fi was not as god, but it still worked (I could now only be one room away from the router). Then I bought and installed OS X 10.7.5, and the Wi-Fi got a little bit worse, but it still worked one way away from the router. Then one day, after dowloading a lot of stuff from Downloads.com, I check and find out that my Wi-Fi is not working for some reason. I have tried some tricks and tips that people have put out, and have read the major Lion Wi-Fi Issue forum post, but still nothing works. I am wondering if I should downgrade to Snow Leopard (though then I can't download a lot of apps from the App Store, and I won't be able to publish iOS games to the App Store using GameSalad). Can anyone give me advice or help me? Thanks:)

  • New macbook pro battery for late 2008 macbook pro dies fast.

I have a late 2008 macbook pro 2.4 HGz Intet Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of ram. I've had it since 2009 and just got a new battery, as the old one finally gave up. That being said, the new battery dies quite fast and I'm not sure why. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thank you

Only problem is that maybe the battery you were sold was manufactured around the same time as the Mac. And LiPo batteries die because of old age as well as use. Take it out and carefully examine all markings, especially anything that can date when it was made, like copyrights or such.
With that evidence you can go back and demand a refund.

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

  • I'd like to replace my hard drive.  How do I know what to buy for my 15-inch early 2008 MacBook Pro?

I am out of room on my hard drive.  I'd like to get a new hard drive and restore my data to the new drive from Time Machine.  How do I know what kind of hard drive to buy for my 15-inch, early 2008 MacBook Pro?  Also, how hard is this to do?

I have changed HDDs several times on the old MBP.  Currently it has a Hitachi 500 GB HDD that came out of my new one.  My adage is that one cannot have too much storage and I think that the 1TB HDD is an excellent choice.  Not only do you get generous capacity, the performance should be (theoretically) comparable to a 750 GB 7200 rpm HDD.  I will be very surprised if there are compatibility problems.
If you bought the HDD from OWC, you should have received Installation instructions.  If not, go to the OWC website and look at the video.  I actually downloaded it so that I could hand write the instructions down step by step.  Also check out iFixit website.  They have step by step instructions that may prove to be useful.
Tools you need:  00 Phillips and #6 Torx Drivers (get good ones).   The instructions make mention of a plastic pry bar (spudger).  I use a stiff piece of plastic like a credit card.
Tips to keep in mind:  Get a large open table space and place a large clean towel on it.  That will protect your MBP and when you drop a screw (and you will) it will not bounce far so you will not have to spend an hour looking for it.
As you take out a set of screws, keep them together (I use wide masking tape.  The little screws will stick to it.)
Keep the sets in sequence.  That will make reassembly much, much easier.
The most difficult steps are removing the keyboard from the MBP body and removing the ribbon cable from the mother board.  In case of the former, work from the back (the display) to the front.  You will initially have to pry it up and then do a lot of jiggling to remove it.  Don't be too timid about it.  At the end of the ribbon cable there is a rectangular connector.  Use your credit card to remove it.  Just pry it off.
The #6 Torx driver is used to take off the 4 mounting pins on the HDD and if I remember correctly there is another place where it is needed, specifically in the battery compartment ( I think).  If the instructions don't say so, keep that in mind and inspect the screw before you select the driver.
Good luck and make sure that you don't have parts left over.
    Ciao.

  • External hard drives compatible with 2008 macbook air

Does anyone have advice on the best external hard drives currently available for the 2008 MacBook Air?

While most any external drive may work, the Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 drives have generated quite a few threads on this board with people having problems in getting them to mount. While some cludgy work-arounds have been useful to some, I think the best one is just to avoid the drives until Toshiba works out the compatibility problems.

  • Trying to install Windows on a 2008 macbook

Hi all, a friend of mine purchased a Windows 7 disk a few weeks ago for the purpose of dualbooting it with his apple computer (a late 2008 macbook). However, we've run into constant problems that we have no idea how to fix, and in the process have caused bootcamp to continually crash (fixed now) and half the hard drive suddenly disappearing (also fixed now). However, we're back to square one.
The first problem is that the mac's drive reads his windows disk as a blank CD, while his windows laptop reads it fine. So we downloaded an official Win7 ISO from Microsoft, and have played around with various things (such as mounting it with daemon tools) but everything has failed so far. Apparently, there is a third option on this screen https://www.dropbox.com/s/besyaxiqtgosfkr/Screenshot%202015-01-16%2023.20.37.png ?dl=0 that does not appear, which is creating a bootable Windows USB from an ISO. Since the drive is not working but we do have the ISO, this seems rather crucial, but it is not available, and we have no idea why.
We have tried some strange solutions we found online to make it appear, but that only made bootcamp continually crash until we restored from a backup, so I'm hesitant of any solutions that involve modifying files. It seems ridiculous that we can't use a simple thing like this while the drive doesn't work. This has been going on for a long time, and we have received no help so far.

What is the size of this DVD? Microsoft has sold DVDs which have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the same DVD, which cause problems for Bootcamp Assistant.

There may be an issue with the Mac Optical drive from 2008, in reading DVDs. Please check the capabilities of the Mac Optical drive.
Look at About This Mac -> (More Info) -> System Report -> Disc Burning. Do this with and without the DVD in question inserted in the Optical drive.
Also check the Tech specs of the Mac on what it supports, for example - MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) - Technical Specifications.

On Macs with built-in Optical drives, with very few exceptions from 2012, the Bootcamp option to create a USB installer from ISOs is not allowed. This is also related to the ability to boot from USBs. This information can be found in
    ls -l /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app/Contents/Info.plist
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  3219 Nov  3 21:06 /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/Info.plist
Do not modify this file, because it will cause further problems. The reason BCA was failing was because the codesign command used, failed because of the use of incorrect qualifiers.
It seems ridiculous that we can't use a simple thing like this while the drive doesn't work. This has been going on for a long time, and we have received no help so far.
This is an issue that Apple does not (and cannot address) on older Macs, especially ones with failing/failed Optical drives. Apple would much rather sell you a new Mac.
Commercial, he bought it officially. And no, he doesn't have access to an external optical drive. There must be a way to do this with the ISO.
You either need to replace a faulty Optical drive, or use a different Mac, install Windows and move it using commercial software like Winclone. Please check sites like iFixit to buy a replacement.

  • Unpredictable reboots on my early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mavericks

    Hello,
    My situation:
    1) First problem I encountered was kernel panic on startup. I fixed it fixed by replacing new AppleSMC.kext by older one from 10.8.* version I suppose  (i used KextWizard).
    2) Time after time MacBook restarts and then shows white screen with a message "your computer restarted because of a problem" (or something very similar). I'm able to start system after Cmd+Option+P+R and safe mode.
    3) If I don't use the way described in point 2, I receive kernel panics with reboot (screenshots made in verbose boot mode attached).
Any help will be highly appreciated.

My iSight camera ... does not work on any Apple OSX software on my early 2008 MacBook PRO 17" - Mavericks 10.9.2...
Having "performed all of the iSight Troubleshooting", you have already reinstalled OS X, Firefox, and Chrome, updated all of them to the latest versions, uninstalled all third-party mirroring software, and tested in more than one OS X login user account.
If you now restart your Mac and launch only Photo Booth, does not the PB window now display the image your camera is viewing?
If the answer is no, even for the simple Photo Booth app, we are left wondering how scratch.mit.edu (a Flash-based web site) can find a working camera when using the Chrome browser.
If the answer is still no, my first suggestion would be to click the "Check Now" button in your  > System Preferences... > Flash > Advanced menu command.  If there is a later update, apply it, and test your camera again using Apple's iSight troubleshooting suggestions.
If you were already using the current Flash version, or if updating it does not change any troubleshooting results, I would try reinstalling OS X one more time in case you had a bad download or install on your previous try.  Then test again with Apple's troubleshooting suggestions.
