2008 Macbook trackpad has gone bananas

2008 black Macbook 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. 4gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram. Osx 10.6.8
All of a sudden last night the trackpad is acting like I'm clicking and dragging. When I move the cursor on the desktop, it creates selection boxes selecting everything. It's really hard to navigate, even having to go into the tool bar to open folders. In finder I can click on applications in the left bar, then when I move into the window with the apps the selection drops down to "all documents" on the left and if I click, it opens that, even though that's not where the cursor is.
I've rebooted, I've taken the battery off for 20 mins, nothing is fixing it. It does it on battery and power supply.

MacBook
This is driving me insane. It won't do it for days, then it's non stop. Like now, it's real work to type this because it keeps selecting everything and then as I'm typing it types over it, deleting what I've typed. It does it with USB mouse, it does it with Magic Mouse, it does it with track pad. Nothing makes it stop until it just stops. Rebooting doesn't even make it stop. I'm not going to pay hundreds of $ to have the Apple store diagnose a computer that is almost 6 years old. If I can't figure it out, I'll just replace it with a PC.

  • Trackpad has gone wacko -

I got the13" top-of-the-line MBA Christmas 2011.  (I don't know if that makes it a mid-2011 model or not.) My trackpad has gone wacko. Rebooting does not help. I have Lion. Here are *some* of the crazy things it's been doing:
opens every folder, .jpg documents, websites etc.  for no reason.
The cursor gets in this mode where it only draws boxes.
Then there are all the crazy Photoshop and Adobe Bridge things it does. . .
I am typing this on my Macbook Pro 15" - no craziness -- not even with PS and Bridge.
Any ideas? Is it hardware or Lion? It was working fine until a few days ago, then it slowly started getting flaky. Then today it's completely unuseable.
    thanks

My new macbook pro has gone black on me three days in a row.  is this a chronic problem?
The only way to get it back is a hard reset or let the battery die and then plug in the charger.  The brightness is up and the power stays on while screen is black.
This is the second macbook pro i have owned in the past two weeks.  I am ready to return it for good if this is a chronic issue. Please help if you have had this same issue.

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Try a NVRAM/PRAM reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If no joy, take it back, and take full advantage of your warranty!
You also may want to let Apple know about this as well:

  • Early 2008 MacBook Pro has no chime/keyboard/USB/video

Since I can no longer view the relevant Apple TS for the famous NVIDIA GPU problem, I'm not sure what the cause of the problem is with my early 2008 MacBook Pro running Mavericks.
I was using it last night to watch a recorded news show while getting ready for dinner and the news show seemed to stop early. Didn't think anything of it at the time because it was time to eat, however I noticed that the browser was still open and the screen was still on, as would have been expected.
After eating, I went to wake up the computer and, while it seemed to be sleeping, which usually happens after about 15 minutes, it wouldn't respond to the keyboard or trackpad. Before long I realized that it also had no USB power. I also can't connect via FireWire or Ethernet.
Since it will not respond to the keyboard, there are a number of options which are not available to me (like resetting NVRAM or starting in Target Disk Mode, etc.).
Since there is a CD inconveniently already in the SuperDrive, I can't start up from the system disc.
I have removed/replaced the RAM, tried resetting the SMC numerous times, and I've quadruple-checked that the keyboard/trackpad ribbon is attached to the logic board. Not sure what other options are available to me.
The main reason that I think it is not the NVIDIA problem is because it seemed in those cases that the keyboard would light, at least the Caps Lock key, and I have nothing except the sleep indicator by the latch and the sound of the optical drive spinning up and then eventually spinning down, oh, and the fans seem to be working.
Any suggestions? Relevant details left out?

No chime means your Mac has not passed it's startup diagnostics.

  • My MacBook trackpad has stopped working correctly and now my MacBook Pro is beginning to malfunction

yesterday my MacBook trackpad stopped working, after resetting my mac it began working again but was jumpy. Now a day later when I turn my laptop on the mouse works for a short while (maybe 4 minutes) and then begins to go jumpy again and then my screen moves to the right and my programmes begin to open and close randomly based on my trackpad movements.
I Have no idea what to do! I've tried installing updates to see if it was that but except for that i'm not that used to a Mac so I don't know! Any help appreciated!

First look at this Apple support article for possible solutions:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203171
If no success, sometimes a very through cleaning of the trackpad will restore functionality.
Last, open the MBP and examine the battery to see if it has expanded.  It resides under the trackpad and may be interfering with it.  If that is the case, the battery should be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook screen has gone all fuzzy

Yesterday I updated my mac with the new SMC firmware.
On the restart my screen has gone all fuzzy, and the colours have gone all strange.
It does this in both mac OS X, windows vista and the boot screen. When I take a screen grab of the screen and send it to another computer the image is normal, as if this problem did not occur.
I've done a hardware test from my install disks and it turned up no problem. I have also tried resetting the SMC firmware by turning the laptop off, unplugging the battery and holding the power button, but so far nothing has changed.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    GfulDedFan,
    Thank you for your reply,
I might have been wrong about the SMC update.
I got the update on my machine on the 17th, and I wasn't sure what exactly it was, and assumed it was the SMC update as it came out on the same date.
My machine is running an Intel chip set and was purchased in mid-2007.

  • My Late 2008 MacBook Pro has started rebooting itself due to kernel panics.  Can anyone review the log to help me troubleshoot?

I'm not sure if any recent activity spawned this activity but here's what I've done lately that's new...
I booted to the recovery disk and and ran the disk repair utility on my hard drive.  Then I ran the RecoveryDiskAssistant to create a bootable USB thumb drive, and then I attempted to create a disk image on an external USB hard drive.  About an hour after I started creating the image I aborted the image creation process.  Both the MacBook Pro and the external hard drive were very hot.
I was experimenting, attempting to create the disk image file onto an external hard drive that is half the size of my existing main hard drive, and was not sure the image would fit, so aborted the process before it completed once I realized it might be an overnight task.  I'm wondering if the heat caused by the intense disk activity may have cooked something on my logic board.  Or maybe somethign completely unrelated is the cause, like a recent patch or software update perhaps???
Can anyone help me identify a possible cause of the kernal panics from the two most recent log files attached below?

Answering my own question...  I did more research and have a theory that my Time Capsule hard drive may be causing the kernal panics due to a disk error.  I ran the disk utility to repair the time capsule drive (actually a 3TB Seagate USB drive plugged into my Airport Extreme router).  I plugged the drive directly into my MacBook Pro and ran the repair utility.  It noticed a "minor header" issue and repaired it.  I'm leaving all USB and Firewire devices unplugged for a while and will see if the panics return.  Six years without any problem with my MacBook.  Love Apple.  I'd get a new MacBook, but this one just keeps on working...

  • Aluminum 2008 MacBook Trackpad issue

Any ideas as to what may be causing this. I have searched tons of threads, but my issue seems unique. The trackpad on my MacBook suddenly is unresponsive in the middle of it. If I touch the upper most and lower most portions of the trackpad it works nearly fine. The scrolling is a little off but still clicks and right clicks. I can drag and drop as normal, but as soon as I venture off to the middle of the trackpad it becomes unresponsive. I have pulled the battery, connecting to AC power only, even tried creating a new user account. No luck. Very odd. I've heard of pads not clicking or not scrolling or at all, but nothing along the lines of the middle not working. Any advice is much appreciated. Also I am running LIon 10.7.4

also one posibility is the battery in your macbook is swelling. since the battery is right under the trackpad if it is swelling (say in the middle of the track pad) then that spot is dead. since you laptop is fairly older (not to old) this is may be very well what is happening, if you go and click on the battery on the top right hand corner what does it say? (cant be pluged into outlet)
it should say if you battery needs replacing or replaced soon if every thing is going ok

  • 2008 Macbook trackpad or mouse no longer working

Did a defrag on a non-system drive, and it finished overnight. This morning, was able to use the trackpad to close the program and put the Mac to sleep, to take it to work. When I got to work, the pointer will move using the trackpad, but clicking does nothing. I attached an external wired mouse and the same thing happens. Reset the SMC using Apple's instructions but no change. Restarted in safe mode, no change. Used the repair disk mode at startup, chose 10.8.1 repair disk, no change. Can move the pointer, but clicking does nothing.
Any ideas? I've got the battery out right now, and it's disconnected from the power adapter.
    Thanks
Update:  Pulling the battery out for 10 minutes before the SMC reset fixed the problem.

Actually, it only worked for about 5 minutes, then it started again. Pulled the battery for an hour, did SMC reset, still not working.
    Any ideas?

  • My macbook screen has gone black.

Tonight, I went to open up my macbook and the screen lit up for a moment and then went black. I closed it, gave it a second, and reopened it, and it happened again. If I looked closely, then I could see the faint desktop. This happened to me once before so I force shutdown the laptop and restarted it. I heard the disk make the startup sound but the screen remained black. I couldn't even see the desktop. The lights on the battery underneath, which usually glow green, were off. The screen flashed once but I saw no other activity. I shut it down again and took out the battery. Waited a couple minutes and cleaned the battery of dust. Popped it back in but there was no change. I even tried to boot up the laptop while holding option. Nothing.
Any idea of what's going on?
I'm not sure the exact model but I purchased it in summer of 2009. It's white and is a basic macbook. I had the logic board changed two years ago when the whole computer wouldn't turn on. Other than that, I haven't had other problems. I turned it off and I'm hoping it fixes itself by morning, at least long enough for me to save some files. Oh, and I upgraded to maverick os a week or two ago if that matters

It's on (Indicator light) what does the state of charge have to do with this issue?

That happened to me recently. I followed the instructions on this support page and it's as good as new:

  • My 2008 MacBook Pro screen has now got interference across the whole screen. It looks similar to a pre-cable interference from bad reception. What is the problem here?

My 2008 MacBook Pro has interference across the full screen. It looks similar to a pre-cable TV screen with bad reception. Any idea of what the problem might be?

Took it to the Apple Store, they determined it's my screen that's messed up (they connected to another monitor, and since the lines didn't mirror onto the monitor it couldn't have been my GPU making the lines but rather the screen itself), so not connected to my wifi issue or a potential logic board issue, so I'm going to get my screen, wifi card, and trackpad (it's been failing too but that wasn't urgent at all) replaced for $330 using their flat-rate repair service which is much better than I imagined in terms of price.

  • Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on early 2008 MacBook

I've searched all over the internet as well as here on the apple site, I can't find a definitive answer either way on this; can I install windows 7 64-bit on my early 2008 MacBook it has 4GB of ram and a 320GB HD inside of it and I plan on wiping the drive and starting over completely before I do the bootcamp; this is because I have a partition on the drive currently and you can't bootcamp an internal HD that already has a partition on it.
I already have Snowleopard installed on the machine so I have bootcamp 3; everything I've seen and read is on vista and XP 64-bit but I can't find a single thing on Windows 7 64-bit on my machine.

    If Vista 64-bit was supported
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846?viewlocale=en_US
and there is an article on which Macs gets "Apple knighted" with Windows 7 "official" support...
Macs that won't get official W7 support, whatever that means
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
If you aren't comfortable on your own... your searches and what you call definitive....
Windows 7 on 27" iMac 2009 might be useful
