2008 MBPro to Sony Wega Trinitron TV?

I've got a 2.4 GHZ MB Pro from mid-2008. I am trying to connect the CPU to an older model Sony Wega Trinitron TV (probably 2004). I have an DVI to Component Video cable, which goes into the back of the TV, but I can't get a picture on the TV. All I get is b/w feedback. I tried going through all of the different resolutions available in my Display prefs, but nothing worked. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?
I am thinking I might need that DVI to S-video adapter that Apple sells? Maybe I just need to use the VGA adapter included with my macbook and go VGA? Pretty sure the TV is VGA.
Thanks,
JB

Some TVs have the ability to switch one or more of their component video inputs to receive RGB encoded video over the input instead of the usual YPbPr encoding. See if your TV can perform that trick.
Otherwise, you are correct that you will need to get the Apple DVI to Video Adapter in order to connect your TV. Although you mention you think your TV is VGA. If by that you mean it has a the standard 3-row, 15-pin VGA connector on it, then use an Apple DVI to VGA Display Adapter.

  • FINALLY! Mac mini to old Sony WEGA tv success!

After having tried several different setups I finally got it working.
My late 2009 Mac mini is now hooked up to my old 27” Sony WEGA Trinitron TV.
They magic/missing link was the “VGA to RCA/ S-Video/VGA Converter” from MonoPrice ($27.51).
I used a mini display port to VGA adapter ($13.47, but can get them cheaper) from my Mac mini to the converter and then from the converter to the tv using a standard composite (yellow RCA) cable. Then another cable from the Mac mini audio port to the red/white ports on the tv. Started up the Mac mini and all was good...almost.
The resolution on the tv just isn’t good for text, and it’s often difficult to read, but the main reason I’m using the setup is video. Hulu, YouTube, TWIT live, etc. All of these have picture quality equal to that of the tv hooked up to cable tv. I tried changing the Mac minis display resolution, but found the default setting of 1024 x 768 works best for video. I have a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac in my office. I just turned on Internet Sharing on the iMac and turned on Airport on the mini to get the wireless internet connection. No Base Station/Router needed. I have a bluetooth mouse, and an Apple wireless keyboard. I can now sit back on the sofa and enjoy!
This isn’t a permanent solution, but until I can upgrade the tv, it will do just fine.

is it apple branded or an off brand?
I bought it through amazon. NOT Apple branded. The seller was Global Source. There are other sellers on amazon that are less expensive, and some that are more expensive. I’ve heard of people having problems with some cables, so I didn’t want to go with the cheapest one, and settled on a mid priced cable.

  • How do I connect early 2009 mac mini to Sony FD Trinitron TV

I am trying to connect my 2009 (2.0 ghz) Mac Mini to a Sony WEGA XBR TV. I have many cables/adapters trying to accomplish this but once the mini starts, all I get is a black screen. The TV appears to be receiving a signal but the screen remains black. I read on a forum that the Apple mini DVI to Video Adapter I bought yesterday won't work on my mini (?). My Sony is not an HDMI model. I guess my choice is component and S-video. My TV is capable of 1080i.  What am I doing wrong?   Thank you for your help!  My exact TV if this helps is 40XBR700 FD Trinitron.  Mac Mini is using most current Snow Leopard OS.

Thank you for your reply -
The TV is a Sony FD Trinitron and the video inputs are S-video, composite and component up to HD 1080i.
The mini is 2009, 2.0 ghz.  We tried using the DVI output from the mini using DVI adapters DVI-D to DVI-I to component with dip switches for various resolutions all the way up to 1080i and 16:9.  Tried  Apple mini DVI to composite and s video.  To this point - no luck on those combinations.  Thank you!

  • How do I connect DVI to Scart (or S-serial) on my Sony WEGA?

Does anyone know how I can connect my MacBook Pro (with a DVI socket) to my Sony WEGA TV. The TV has both Scart and S-serial video (plus the red and white audio sockets).
    Many thanks,
    Richard

If it's an older Mac with DVI Output then you need something like:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MTAyNjUwNA
If it's a newer Mac with the mini port you're going to need two adapters such as:
    mini displayport to VGA http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?mco=NDY5OTAzNQ
    then VGA to S-Video http://www.amazon.com/TV-Out-VGA-S-Video-RCA-Adapter/dp/B000S675JU

  • Toshiba HD worked fine with 2008 MBPro, but when I try to use with new MBAir, it says "read only" - how can I fix?

I have a Toshiba external HD that I used with my old 2008 MBPro with no issues. I just got a new MBAir, and when I try to use the same Toshiba HD it will not allow me to write to the drive. The drive mounts and I can open files from it, but when I look at the info under Sharing & Permissions it says "You can only read." I'm not able to Verify it in Disk Utility either, as when I open it there all the Verify buttons are greyed out.
I also noticed the drive format says Windows NTSF, which I don't understand since I was using it with a Mac before and have never used it with a PC. Do I have to reformat it to write to it from my MBAir? I have files on there that I don't want to lose, and the only PC I have available to me is at work.

  • Getting mac min to look good on Sony Wega 30" HDTV CRT (KV-30HS420

Got a new mac mini (Intel 1.83 GHz) and am hooking it up to a Sony Wega 30" HDTV CRT (model no. KV-30HS420) using an DVI to HDMI cable. No problems selecting input and getting an image, but at 1280 x 720 the desktop looks horrible. Turning off "overlace" gets all of my desktop back in view, but everything is blurry and it is simply not acceptable for my 78 year old father.
Is it simply not possible to get a descent image on this set? Should I just opt for buying him a wide screen flat panel display?
    Please advise.
    --ron

Unfortunately a CRT-based HDTV is never going to look very good when used as a computer monitor. You will probably need to get a nice LCD TV for your father.
How far away will he sit from the TV? Even if the screen were clear, as it will be with an LCD, there are still limits to what can be seen when you are too far away. Keep that in mind.

  • Sony Wega connection

I have kv34xbr910 (Wega) cathode tube with hd. There is a dvi port on the set. Sony says this is not intended for computer hookup. The other connections available are component(rgb). What is the best hookup I can make with the dvi on my macbook pro(early 2008)?
    Thank you

there is an Svideo on the wega as well.

  • Sony Wega

I want to hook my macbook up to my sony 60" Wega HDTV. What would be the best looking way to do that? I already have the mini-DVI to VGA and mini-DVI to DVI that i frequently use with external monitors so i have those already if they might help in my request. I guess i could get the mini-DVI to video cable and that would work but i just wanted to get opinions on what is my best option. thanks
and btw i already checked if it has DVI or VGA ports and it doesnt so i do have hdmi input, HD plugs(like the green and blue and whatever color the others are), and the red, yellow, and ?white? plugs.

Hello there. I think I'm a little confused about what your question is. Please correct me if I'm wrong. You basically want to know what's the best option to use on your 60" Wega HDTV but you don't have a VGA or DVI input.
If you DO have HDMI inputs you can always purchase a DVI to HMDI converter/cable. They're relatively easy to find. I just searched on Amazon and there are quite a few different makes and models. Just a little FYI...I've had great experiences with Belkin and Acoustic Research but feel free to look at all the different brands.

  • 2008 MBPro won't turn on/power issues

My friend's 2008 Macbook Pro (5,1) has been acting really screwy this past month. First the (original) battery would not hold a charge and now it's failing to start up. Today it just sat there with no sign of life, despite being on the charger and swapping out two different batteries. I opened it up and blew it out (there was a decent bit of dust) then reseated the RAM and reset the SMC for good measure (something he had already tried) and it did start up and recover.
Does this sound like a failing logic board? Or perhaps a jinky power connection? It's up and running now but everything points to a massive FAIL looming on the horizon, and I don't know if anything can be fixed versus scrapping it and buying a newer model. Both batteries were close to full and the power adapter had a green light, but nothing we tried would turn it on until I opened it up and reseated everything.
FWIW, he and I both bought the same model at the same time; both were Apple refurb and we've upgraded the RAM to 8GB using OWC chips. He still has the stock HD and I replaced mine with a bigger one, otherwise they're the same. And I haven't had nearly as many problems as he's had with his.

I do not see anything critically bad, just the battery has seen a fair amount of use and if it is the original, that is what is expected.  Favor me once more and download from the Internet Coconut Battery (free):
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
Post the image.  This is from mine:
I am interested in the 'health' or current capacity divided by battery capacity.  If it is 80% or more, than that is good,  If it is less, then a new battery may be considered.
    Ciao.

  • HT1551 Will atv work on a sony wega kdf55

will atv work on a sony grand wega kdf 55xs955?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Your TV, after doing a quick search on the Internet, does not appear to have any HDMI inputs, so unfortunately the Apple TV will not work with it straight out of the box.

  • Mac mini -n- sony wega crt tv

my sony (crt) tv has a dvi-hdtv connector but the sony docs say it is intended for use with compuers. with a bit of searching around i found one reference that in fact this connector does work with the mac mini. anyone know for sure? thanks

Generally - yes - Apple's mini DVI works with anything that is not "dual link".
Your questions do not provide nearly enough information for someone to do the work for you and look up the specifications. Last time I checked, sony made a handful more than 3 TV and Wega models - so you would be getting a shot in the dark if anyone tried to answer...

  • Intel Mac Mini and Sony Wega displays

I purchased one of the G4 based Minis for use in my media center. At that time I had quite a bit of difficulty getting it to work with my Sony KDF-60xs955 60" HDTV. I did eventually get it working and stable but the process, when written down for others in this forum post, is somewhat intimidating.
My parents really need a new machine for their daily use and I'm going to be donating that Mini to them. Before I replace it with a new intel Mini (yay Front Row!) I want to know whether it will autodetect my television or not. I have no desire to spend the 4-5 hours needed to hack it into working again, plus the hassle of getting it to work again any time I switch displays for a few hours. More importantly I don't feel like I should have to...The HDTV is automatically detected by a PowerBook and that works flawlessly.
One of the major reasons I pay higher prices to Apple is so that it just works. My new iMac? It just works. My old PowerBook? It just works. My old Mac Mini? Not so much... So, here I am hoping to get an answer out of these forums: To buy or not to buy that is the question, whether tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous non-support or to take my cash away from this sea of troubles and by opposing end them.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I have downloaded the lastest Windows Media Player from Microsoft for Mac OS X, but it doesn't officially support the Intel Macs. It runs with wmv videos from my harddisk, for example, but I also can't play the amazon.com sound samples (I just tried). I guess it's because the Windows Media Player is running via Rosetta, maybe there is some problem there.
For the moment I could only suggest to use the Real-player sound samples as a work-around. Real player does work on the Intel Mac with these sound samples. Just that on my machine it does only download and I have to start it from the desktop instead of right inside of Safari. Maybe it's just a question of preferences, but it does work, at least.

  • Why is my Early-2008 MBPro intermittently hesitating?

I recently replaced the HDD in an early 2008 15" Macbook Pro that had been dropped a few years ago.  I used a WD Blue Notebook 320GB  2.5" Sata Drive from BestBuy. Snow Leopard installed fine and the computer appears fine; but upon closer inspection through regular use I have noticed that in certain programs the computer seems to freeze for a brief moment.  Occasionally navigating finder is also slow.  Is this a problem with my drive selection? I have read fleeting reports that some users have experienced issues with WD drives.

I can't say for certain that your problem is with the Western Digital drive, but I do know, because of problems in the past, that I avoid WD drives like the plague.
You could always return the drive for a HGST or Seagate (from OWC) and see if the problems persist. It's difficult to tell form your description of your problems whether they are hardware or software oriented.
