2008 R2 evaluation to full
Hi,
I really, really need to do what is not supported...
But my question is if unsupported OS can have impact on functionality of the machine?
Sure, that I will never need any support for this server OS wise. Please encourage me :)
MS statement:
Question: Can you convert the evaluation version to a full version?
Answer: Although this conversion is not blocked, we do not support an upgrade from an evaluation version to a full version or changing the product key to a full version key. Since there is no support for any type of upgrade
you must do a install to new directory using non-evaluation media. If you change the product key to Full Version, the visual evaluation references in Winver and as displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, but the WLMS service remains on the
system and the media retains its evaluation status.

Hi pob579,
If your evaluation license expired and have not activated Windows Server 2008 R2, you are reminded each time you log in and at common intervals until the end of the activation grace period of 30* days. If you have not activated Windows Server 2008 R2
during this grace period, the system then will be unlicensed. Persistent notifications will alert you of the need to activate.
Failing to activate the evaluation will cause the licensing service to shut the machine down every hour (The 10 day activation period can be reset five (5) times by using the rearm command. See below for further information on activation rearm).
After this time, you will need to uninstall the evaluation software and reinstall a fully-licensed version of Windows Server 2008 R2
While in the notification condition, you will be able to log on and off, and the system will function normally. However, the desktop background will change to black, and Windows Update installs only critical updates. The notifications will continue until
you activate the operating system.”
We can found the evaluation license statement at 2008R2 evaluation download page.

Need SQL 2008 R2 Evaluation Version
I know that Microsoft has released SQL 2012 now, but my company wants to move some of old servers to SQL 2008 R2 now. In this regard we are looking for SQL 2008 R2 Evaluation now, could you help where to get the same??
I tried many links but all of them direct to SQL 2012 download :(
Also, if my company decides to purchase SQL 2008 R2 now, will Microsoft will priovide us the license??
Any help on this is appreciated...
San...
San...Yes,
I'm pretty sure that's what happened recently for one of my clients. They wanted a production server for the BI solution I developed for them on SQL Server 2008 R2. The decision was taken to not invest further resources in migrating this solution to SQL
2012 at this stage. (This is a complex multi-terra byte solution) So they purchased a SQL Server 2012 license then downgraded to SQL Server 2008 R2.
The network infrastructure team of your company will have a contact with a Microsoft licensing expert. This licensing expert should be able to tell you how to get the media / download for SQL Server 2008 R2 via this licensing route.
I also recommend trying migrating your databases to SQL Server 2012 using a desktop using a developer's license. You may then be able to communicate to your company a cost benefit analysis of upgrading to SQL Server 2012. A developer license costs around
50 USD; -

As long as your don't use the above for your production server installation you are OK.

Where to download Sun IdM/Oracle Waveset evaluation version [full]
Hi,
Could you advice me, where to download evaluation copy of sun IdM/Wave Set? I downloaded 8.1 but it looks for pre-installations.
Appreciate your help!
Thanks
PrakashSun IDM 8.1 can be installed from scratch. No previous IDM versions are required. It is a full installation. Simply use MySQL as the repository database and Apache Tomcat as your application server.
Specific installation instructions for Sun IDM 8.1 on Tomcat can be found here: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-5594/ahtbq?l=en&a=view
Of course, first you need to prepare the DB and App Server: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-5594/ghrqf?l=en&a=view and http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-5594/ghrsw?l=en&a=view, respectively.
Good luck.

Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation for learning purposes.
Hi to all,
what is the less expensive (and fully legal) way to build a private lab with Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines to practicing me to take exams for MCSA certification ? I have already terminated the 180-days evaluation period for Windows Server 2008
R2.
Many thanksI've downloaded and installed several different versions of Windows Server many times using the same account and information, if there were a problem with it, I'm sure Microsoft would have raised a concern with me. You can't really run a business by
tearing down and rebuilding your infrastructure every 6 months, and by installing, using, and learning from evaluation installations, I am just one more able-bodied individual with Windows skills to improve the supportability of their current and future install
base. My use of those eval products has no real commercial value to Microsoft because I wouldn't pay for it if I had to and I am not using them within a business infrastructure.
Nothing in the evaluation terms of use that I have seen says you can only install it one time, ever, in any environment, and nothing in the delivery and use of the evaluation versions has prevented me from reinstalling.
The bottom line I guess is you have to use your best judgement. I wouldn't recommend continuously reinstalling to support a real business infrastructure as a way to bypass licensing. I can't tell you 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt that Microsoft
fully approves of reinstalling an eval for your own personal development needs. I seriously doubt that Microsoft would spend the time and resources to chase you down for it, though.
And I agree with Milos - you would be better off pursuing a server 2012 certification, for which there are also evaluation versions available.
I hope this post has helped! -
SQL Server 2008 R2 with Tools Evaluation Copy
Hello,
Is the SQL Server 2008 R2 software (SSMS, BIDS) still available for evaluation download? I was only able to find the Express edition, but I cannot open my solutions using Express. I tried to upgrade Express to Evaluation, but I get the below
error.
Rule Check Result
Rule "SQL Server 2008 R2 edition upgrade" failed.
The selected SQL Server instance does not meet upgrade matrix requirements.
OK
Thank you - BrettHello,
SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation Edition seems no longer available on Microsoft Download as you can see on the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8158
However, if you are a MSDN subscriber you can download the full media of any paid edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, run SQL Server setup and choose Evaluation Edition
on the “Product Key” page of SQL Server setup.
Hope this helps.

Can I run OAS in 64bit Windows 2008?
I'm going to install the OAS in our 64bit Windows 2008 for evaluation, however, both the x86 and win64 file cannot be installed.
The following message is prompted when we attempt to install the win64 version:
The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.
And the following message is prompted inside a DOS prompt when we attempt to install the x86 version:
Checking operation system version: must be 5.0, 5.1 or 5.2 . Actual 6.0 Failed <<<<
Existing Oracle Universal Installer, log for this session can be found at C:\.......
We can only install the OAS in a Windows XP workstation, does it mean that we have to use a Windows XP workstation as production server?
May I know if there has any OAS download for 64bit Windows Server 2008?Not exactlly. Maybe it's certified now, but still cannot install.
According to the update:
1. Windows 2008 is supported with patchset 10.1.3.4 or higher. Before applying the 10.1.3.4 patchset, customers must first install the base 10.1.3.x products using the following patches:
. 10.1.3.1.0 SOA requires patch 6712338 (http://updates.oracle.com/download/6712338.html)
. 10.1.3.2.0 WebCenter requires patch 6971010 (http://updates.oracle.com/download/6971010.html)
. 10.1.3.x Companion CD requires patch 7129052 (http://updates.oracle.com/download/7129052.html)
. 10.1.3.x Companion CD ASG Install requires patch 7129469 (http://updates.oracle.com/download/7129469.html)
. 10.1.3.x Companion CD Failsafe Install requires patch 7191497 (http://updates.oracle.com/download/7191497.html)
Additional notes for Windows 2008:
. The patches listed above apply to both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 2008.
. Please review the release notes on http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12524_01/relnotes.1013/e12523/install.htm#sthref7 for the 10.1.3.4 patch set for known issues for Windows 2008.
But....
1. 10.1.3.4 still not avaialble for direct download, you have to download 10.1.3.x then apply the patch. But the download of 10.1.3.x cannot be installed, how can we apply the patch?
2. You cannot download the patch without Metalink account (maybe, it's not for evaluation at this moment)
So, it still have to wait until the full package of 10.1.3.4 or above is available for direct download. -

We want to activate Windows Server 2008 R2 on the system where trial version is already activated,
Hi,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with this issue.
If you mean that convert the Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation version to a full version, we can get following
details from this KB: Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 evaluation version
Question: Can you convert the evaluation version to a full version?
Answer: Although this conversion is not blocked, we do not support an upgrade from an evaluation version
to a full version or changing the product key to a full version key. Since there is no support for any type of upgrade you must do a install to new directory using non-evaluation media. If you change the product key to Full Version, the visual evaluation references
in Winver and as displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, but the WLMS service remains on the system and the media retains its evaluation status.
Meanwhile, please refer to the following similar thread and check if can help you.

Inplace upgread Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012
Hello,
I am testing inplace upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2. My test server is Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, Evaluation and is a domain controller. I tried to perform an inplace upgrade, however it failed. The compatibility report says that
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Evaluation (Server with GUI).
I also update the schema first. It went fain and it was completed without error.
Thank you.Hi,
Based on my experience, it is not supported to upgrade
from a Windows server evaluation version to another Windows server evaluation version. If you want to use Windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter evaluation version, you need to delete the previous operate system and perform a clean installation. Or
you can convert the evaluation version of Windows Server 2008 R2 to a full retail version and then upgrade it to Windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter version.
For more detailed information, please refer to the link below:

SQL Server 2008 KB2977321 Failed with Error code 1642
As part of application of security patches via windows update, sql server KB2977321 was applied along with a number of OS security patches.
Prior to applying the patches, I stopped the agent, engine, reporting, analysis and full text services.
The Sql server build prior to windows update was (for both instances):

Standard Edition (64-bit)
After the update process, my main instance is showing (the second instance is not in use yet and I have left it in its stopped state)

The instance came up successfully and seems to be operating normally. Was there an error or was the KB installed correctly as the result of the windows update process indicated?
Is there a way I can verify this?I did some research on this particular KB article and it seems to be related to Master Data Services which I am not using. The KB was pushed automatically and I am not sure that it was a required update in our situation. I'd like to understand exactly
what caused the error message before initiating a repair as this is a production and not a test environment. Everything appears to be functioning properly and I have received direction from Microsoft in the past that information in some logs identified
as level 'error' are in fact to be ignored. I checked the windows update and this KB shows 'Successful' rather than failed or cancelled.
I would also like more information on why sql server services should not be stopped prior to allowing the OS patches to be applied. I have received messages in the past that stopping the services before service packs are applied
prevent the necessity for a reboot of the machine. I've never heard before that it is a best practice not to stop Sql service prior to applying patches. Once the services are stopped, I have our infrastructure admin start a VM snapshot on
the machine then kick off the windows update process. When done, I reboot the machine, test out Sql Server processes and then if all goes well give the ok to release the VM snapshot. I've supported various databases for 12 years, Sql Server for 5
years and this is the first time I've heard stopping the service manually can cause problems. If that is the case, I will certainly change how I do things....
I did run the discovery report and the results follow:

Windows Server 2008 SP2 X86 Product Key Issue
I am trying to create a VM using a Template, but facing an issue with respect to Product Key. The VHD I am using is of
Windows Server 2008 SP2 X86. If I do not provide Product Key in the Template/Guest OS Profile, the Virtual Machine creation fails even before starting. Seeing this behavior, I added a dummy key to the Guest OS Profile/Template which allowed
me to deploy the machine, but the VM gets stuck at Customization before failing. When I take the remote console of the VM, the Error I see at the Remote Console is:
Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass. The settings specified in the answer files cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [microsoft-windows-shell-setup]"
So, I am confused now what to do.
Is dummy key supported?
Do I need to provide the actual key in the Template/Guest OS Profile? You should be able to evaluate this software for 180 days.

Instead of installing SQL server instance you selected add node which is to be selected when SQL server installation is to be made on Node which is being added to cluster. Since your OS is not clustered I am sure you selected worng option.
Please right click on setup file and select run as administrator. Now installation window which pops up on that on left hand side select
installation and then on page that appears select 'New server standalone installation or add feature to existing installation'.
You already have SQL server 2008 installed on your machine as per feature discovery report

Full-Text Search has not worked since we upgraded to 2012
I have a filestream database and table. Our full-text searches have always worked until we upgraded to SQL 2012 in December. Now, no file that has been uploaded since December is searchable. What has gone wrong here. It should have been
a clean upgrade. We are not getting any error messages. We are just not getting any records returned when we search on a word that we know are in the documents we've uploaded since December (for instance, the word 'aluminum').
Filestream is enabled for the instance.
A full-text catalog exists and contains a full-text index (the same one we've always had). Full-text indexing is ENABLED.
I've tried rebuilding the catalog and the index. I've tried to do a FULL POPULATION on the table.
We haven't changed our queries nor the way the files are uploaded.
Nothing works. I have been a database administrator since the SQL 2005 days and I have never seen anything like this.
Please help.Hi GINGER PIERCE,
Since the issue regards SQL Server Search. I will help you post the question in the related forums. It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.
According to your description, in theory , if you can do a full-text search for SQL Server 2008, when upgrading the SQL Server version from 2008 to 2012, the Full text indexing feature should be run well in SQL Server 2012 databases. If not , you can try
to restore your database from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2012, create an new Full-Text Catalog and Index on the table or view in the database, and then use Full Text Index to search words, phrases and multiple forms of word or phrase via FREETEXT() and
CANTAINS() with “and” or “or” operators. check if it is normal that the full-text search feature is enabled in the SQL Server 2012 instance. For more information , see:
Full Text Search step by step in SQL Server 2012.
Note: In SQL Server 2012 SP1 , the server will report that Full Text Search is not supported in this edition of SQL Server when it clearly is. The workaround is to create the initial catalog by using a T-SQL query:
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG
In addition, since it is a fileStream database, we need to verify if you do Full Text Searches on documents in FileTables, if yes, you should enable FileStream database for your SQL Server, and enable FileTable options for the database. For more information,
see:
Full Text Searches on Documents in FileTables.
