2008 R2: How to image/deploy Win 7/8 systems?

This was originally posted on Windows Server forum, not knowing there was a forum more specific to my need.
Hi all. This is a rather broad question.  On the Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 platforms, what is the simplest but most effective set of technologies from Microsoft to enable me to simply re-image a Win7 client machine in situations where it needs to be
refreshed?
A common scenario is that a person's computer contracts a virus or they otherwise screw it up so badly it needs a clean start, and rather than spend 3-4 hours rebuilding the system manually, I'd like to be able to simply re-image the machine - most ideally
from the Win 2008 R2 server.
However the environments I work in typically have a variety of hardware mixes - various Dell, HP, Lenovo laptops and desktops.  I don't know if one single image per organization would do, or if I have to create an image for every type of computer.
Also how are these images deployed, is it done over the network, or am I to create a bootable disc, or do I attach a USB external hard drive since I imagine the image is bigger than a 4.7GB DVD?  Given that I don't have a background in doing this, I
am hoping to find all-inclusive prescriptive guidance on how to go about this system imaging process.  I work in IT, but am new to this particular aspect of things.  Thank you

Hi viProCon,
Consider your different hardware you can sysprep different system image then you can deploy them. The WDS include the following general knowledge point, you can refer the

  • Imaging and deploying Win 7 using ZCM11 RC3

How do I use ZCM11 RC3 to image and deploy Win 7 over my network?
I have just installed ZCM11 on our servers here and have done the discovery and inventory process. I am new to ZCM and am not sure how to do the imaging? Nothing seems to happen when I select a workstation and choose it for imaging. Also wondering, where I could find some best practices that would help in the roll-out.
    Thanks,

Right now, I have mounted a volume to the 'content-repo\images' directory.
Another question is whether the image is HAL-dependent? Would I be able to load it to a different workstation with dissimlar hardware..Its just a base image with Win 7 - clean install. Thanks
As far as I know it's very tricky and maybe even not possible to do imaging without disabling firewall. What you could do is have a separate ZCM server that only does imaging..
If you run ZCM on linux then you might be able to mount a samba share or a different HD under /var/opt/novell/zenworks/content-repo/images/yoursmbshareorharddisk.
Use sysprep to create a "base" image and then use addon images that apply computer specific drivers.
There in an online traing course (ATT Online - Migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 using ZENWorks Configuration Management) that walk you trough how to do this:

  • How to create a Pooled VDI infrastructure using Win server 2012 as VM image?I have followed the "usual" way to build a pooled VDI desktop using Win7 or Win8 with success, but it fails when I use an image of Win Server 2012 as VM

I have followed the "usual" way to build a pooled VDI desktop using Win7 or Win8 with success, but it fails when I use an image of Win Server 2012 as VM instead.
Am I overlooking something?  Should I need to prepare the image in a different way? (Sysprep differently?)
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
Can you specify the error which you are facing during VDI setup for server 2012?
I might think that you need to check the memory setting for server 2012, as might happens that due to less memory you can’t setup the VDI setup properly.
Memory: If the Master VM is configured with static memory, it must have at least 1024 MB as startup RAM. If the Master VM is configured with dynamic memory, the maximum RAM must be at least 1024 MB.

  • How can I deploy Digital Edition 2.0 through SCCM?

    Hello all,
I would like to know how I can deploy Digital Edition through my company's SCCM solution. When I create my usual setup for new software to be deployed, I get the Digital Edition package sent out correctly to my test machines, but nothing gets installed. It just stands forever and tries to install, then when I reset the machines, it gives me an error that I reset doing installation. But I know it wasn't even really trying to install the software.
Is there an msi file somewhere I can download and distribute to my users?
    Kind regards,
    Kasper

Moving this discussion to the Adobe Digital Editions forum.
Kwy28 the Adobe Digital Editions software was not designed to be deployed.  You will either want to ask the users who need to use the software to install it individually or install it on one system and then use a utility like Norton Ghost to make an image of that computer.

  • How can i deploy macbooks and 802.1x authentication using PEAP/MSChap version 2

How can i deploy macbooks and 802.1x authentication for wireless connectivity using PEAP/MSChap version 2. The Cert is generated by a 2008 Windows CA authority. I am trying to get to join but the MAC doesnt seem to want to accecpt the cert. Can i not validate the cert and still have it join the 802.1x wireless netqwotk? The wireless netwotk is using a Cisco 5508 wireless controller and Cisco 1142 access points. All works fine with Windows devices.

    Hi Tarik,
    Thanks for your answers,
I've attached my configured AuthZ rules and AuthZ profile for provisioning,
I want the process to be the same for iPhone, Android and Windows.
    1) Connect to the SSID
    2) Login using your AD credentials PEAP-MS-CHAP-v2
    3) Redirect to device registration portal (So I can set a limit of 3 devices per employee)
    4) As soon as the client click "register" no more redirects and PERMIT-ALL
I think that I don't need to rely on profiling because In terms of AuthZ policies it should be something like this:
    1) if WIRELESS802.1x and PEAP-MS-CHAPV2 and BYODREGISTRATION=!YES(Unknown or not reg) then "Redirect to device registration(that is NSP right?)"
    2) if WIRELESS802.1x and PEAP-MS-CHAPV2 then PERMIT-ALL(no redirection)
    3) everything else = DENY-ALL
But the NSP looks for Client Provisioning policies, so if I don't configure any policy it should Allow Network Access(See attachment photo3.png) but as I said on the post it shows that cannot retrieve the MAC-Address so the client can't register his device and don't have access to the network. (To grant access I've configured provisioning policies, that way the clients can register their devices but they are redirected to google play or are forced to install the profile at iOS and this is what I don't want because it is not necessary)
What screenshoot do you need after the registration? the Auth report?
Thank you very much for your time!

  • 0x800705AA error code while deploying win store application. Insufficient resources.

    Hi,
I'm getting the error while deploying win store application in debug mode. I checked the space - it is not the issue. Is is possible to check/clean the disk space associated with the user account? Is this a problem? If yes, how to clean it?
    Thanks
    Vlad

Did you ever get an answer on this?  I have the same problem, and have had 3 different level 1 and level 2 Microsoft Techs work on this, with no fix.  Always the same answer - refresh Windows.  It's amazing how these techs can't zero in
on a root cause for anything.

  • Windows Image Deployment - WinPE - Execute Command After Server Image Deployment but Before WinPE Reboot

Simplified version: Execute command in WinPE after server image deployment but before WinPE reboots.
I have a custom ISO with a boot.wim and install.wim for deploying Windows Server to our environment. Our environment does not allow DHCP and we have no static IPs available at build time so this will all be done with no internet connection during all phases
    of deployment.
We have a custom HTA form that generates an XML file based on user input and stores it on the RAMDisk during WinPE. How can we move this XML file from the RAMDisk to the deployed Windows Server image?
    Thanks in advance, Tim

I believe you should be able to do this during the offlineServicing configuration pass.  You would just need to add into your answer file a command or script to copy from the XML file over to the newly created C:\ drive.
I don't have System Image Manager installed on the computer I'm using but if I recall there is a spot during the offlineServicing pass to execute custom commands. You would just add your script path there, the WinPE system drive letter is
X:\ , and I think the target drive letter Windows is installed to might change depending on how many devices you have hooked up so do a test install and hit SHIFT-F10 , from there you can run diskpart > list volume to see where the new Windows
    install is located.
Another alternative could be using a USB drive as your install media, then you can run a script during offlineServicing to copy that XML over to the USB drive.

  • MDT Image Deployment Using Flash Drive

    Hi,
In my environment i am using MDT 2010 image deployment process to deploy Windows XP and Windows 7 OS images,
As image deployment is foccussed on multiple remote locations we have planned to move with USB Flash drive (Pen Drive) for image deployment,
The problem occurs here in normal system through diskpart utility i can able to get all the disks including my flash drive but in win pe mode i am unable to get my flash drive listed in diskpart utility.
so the image deployment process hangs on to the microsoft solution accelerator screen i am unable to predict the actual reason but i can predict this can happen because of mass storage driver problems.
I tried the same using USB Hard Disk and succeded with the deployment and i am unable to guess what makes difference between USB Hard disk and USB Flash Drive.
Can you just help me out on this to close the problem ASAP..
So that i can proceed with my roll out activities.
    Thanks in advance,
    Siva

    Hi,
At last the image deployment using flash drive works for me.
    I attempted the following steps,
First i converted the flsh drive to bootable flash drive using diskpart utility,This can be done in Windows 7 Operating system only.
navigate to cmd and type Diskpart, and enter the below commands,
    List disk
    Select Disk no
    create partition primary
    select partition no
    active
    format fs=ntfs
    Assign
    Exit
Upon completition,Insert windows 7 DVD to the system and do the following
Navigate to DVD Drive in my case it is G: and change directory to boot
    G:cd boot
    G:\Boot>Bootsect.exe /nt60 I: where I: is my flash drive
Then copy the contents to the Usb flash drive and change the first boot device of the target system to local hard disk and deploy the image
while in Win pe mode use disk part utility to check whether your disk got detected.
If everything is ok then it will work.
    Thanks for your valuable time.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • X220 with Intel Series 310 80 GB mSATA SSD (How do you get Win 7 to see drive

    Hi Everyone,
I am the proud owner of a new x220 with the following spec:
    * i7 2.70GHz
    * * gis mem
    * Bios version 1.21
    * running Win 7 64-bit professional.
    * 320 hd
I am very proud of my self for installing the Intel Series 310 80 GB mSATA SSD by myself (not very technical).
    1. If I hit F12 on boot up the drive is available.
    2. Running Lenovo Think Vantage Tool Box and it sees the Intel SSDMAEMC080G2 drive...
The question I have is that windows does not see this as a drive from my computer..ect.  My question is how to I get Win 7 to see this drive so I can move my win 7 to it and set as a the boot drive.
What step am I missing???  Thanks everyone for your help!!!
    Chris

    Hi, guys
If you whant to use the msata drive as the 2nd drive in the system you've to initialize it.
For making it bootable the are seveal methods. I've used the next two:
    1. I used Intel Data Migration Software tool (based on Acronis technology) to transfer all image from the stock hdd to the new Intel SSD drive 320 Series (120 gb). At this moment the new drive was plased into the external usb box. Then I've booted from the new drive and resized the partitions using the Disk Management applet.
    2. The second method is to use the factory recovery media (USB stick in my case). I did that for the new msata SSD drive (non Intel 128 gb). Insert the new drive, boot from the usb stick, fully recover, reboot into the bios setup, change the boot priority for the new drive, reboot from the new drive, resize the partitions and delete the Lenovo_recovery partition on the new drive. I'm sure the cloning tool will work for msata too.
No actions were carried out with the SSD drives (I mean initializing, partioning...) before data migrating in both cases.

  • How can I install Win XP on Satellite U300-150 PSU30e

    How can i install win xp on U300-150 / Model : PSU30e
I try to boot from CD Win XP SP2 but cannot not detect any HDD.
How can i do it ?
There is no option on bios for SATA support or IDE
    please help me

    Hey buddy
You will not find any SATA or IDE settings in the BIOS. The problem is that you have not installed the SATA driver which is necessary to install the XP on this notebook.
The key is Intel Matrix Storage Manger!
The Storage Manager has to be included into the Windows XP OS during the setup procedure using the button F6.
At the other hand you could include the Storage Manger using the free application called nLite.
Search a little bit in this forum. There are enough threads and postings regarding this theme.

  • How to delete/deploy resources in ES4 workbench?

In the previous version of the workbench, I could deploy resources (PDF, flash files) into the workbench by drag-and-droping the file from the Windows Explorer into the workbench resource's tab. I could also delete the resource files by right clicking on the item and selecting 'delete' in the resource tab of the workbench.
In the ES4 workbench, I could no longer do the above. Drag-and-drop does nothing and the right click context menu only shows Relationships, Access Control, History. How to delete/deploy resources in ES4 workbench?

  • How do i Install Win 7 to an External HD

I have iMac 27" 3ghz Intel core 2 duo and love it! I am also a gamer and despise the fact that gaming studios don't make enough games for Macs. So I've tried using Win XP on my mac via boot-camp by dual booting but was not satisfied and didn't like having windows software directly on my apple machine. I don't want to give up gaming entirely on computers so........
I would like to install Win 7 to my External HD (LACIE Rugged ALL-Terrain 250GB 5400 RPM 2.5" USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b External Hard Drive), but i have heard that Win 7 is a little tricky when trying to install it on a machine with multiple HD's using different Operating Systems. Im not quite sure what all the issues are, but if you know how to properly install Win 7 on to an external HD so i can dual boot from that HD to play windows based games than please help! =)

I've not tried it myself, but I've read that if you use a third-party EFI tool like "rEFIt" and you are willing to make a custom install disc (DVD), it is possible. Just do a little Google searching and you should find the same links I found that talk about doing this.
Another thing I have not tried, but should theoretically work would be to use a "boot from VHD" configuration, where you put the VHD on an external drive. I don't remember where I read about booting Windows 7 from a VHD, but I suspect it was on MSDN.

  • Will the reports developed in sql server 2008 r2 BIDS work when deployed on sql server 2012 reporting manager

Will the reports developed in sql server 2008 r2 BIDS work when deployed on sql server 2012 reporting manager?
when I check on Microsoft site it says
Reports are not upgraded when you upload a report definition file directly to the report server
or SharePoint site. Upgrading a report definition in SQL Server Data Tools is the only way to upgrade the .rdl file.
When you open an .rdl file in Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), if the report was
created for a previous namespace, Report Designer automatically creates a backup file and upgrades the report to the current namespace.
This is the only way you can upgrade a report definition file.
Now here is another confusing statement which says
You can upload an .rdl file created in an earlier version of Reporting Services to a SQL Server
2012 report server and it is automatically upgraded on first use. The report server stores the report definition file in the original format. The report is automatically upgraded the first time it is viewed, but the stored report definition file remains
    unchanged.
All I want to know is if I deploy a rdl made in 2008 r2 to 2012 will it work on the report manager of
    2012?
    <o:p>
    </o:p>

I have tested this fucntionality and can confirm that ssrs 2008 r2 reports work when you deploy them on new ssrs 2012 report manager .
    No Migration is required .
I didnt even moved report server dbs .All I did is just deployed reports on the report manager and it worked .
    "You
can upload an .rdl file created in an earlier version of Reporting Services to a SQL Server 2012 report server and it is automatically upgraded on first use. "
Microsoft needs to correct this the documentation is misleading
