[2008 R2] Hyper-V Dynamic memory warning with half of vHost memory free

Our virtual server host system has about 19GB of Memory free (out of 32GB total), yet a virtual guest using Dynamic Memory was only being assigned 8GB and the demand was around 13GB, therefore generating a Warning state on the Memory Status. Logging onto
the guest machine showed about 8GB of memory being used as well. The end-users were receiving memory errors in their applications. Any idea why the guest system was in this warning state?

There is a perception in the OS.  And different numbers come from different places.
In a nutshell, the RDP Server has a memory leak if you constantly disconnect and reconnect - and it ends up chewing up memory, but when available memory is tested this memory consumption is missed. If you logout of the RDP session instead of disconnecting
then the memory is given back and can actually be used.
It is a strange interaction with RDP that has been there since the original release.  But it is specific to using RDP to connect to the Hyper-V Server for VM Management and disconnecting without ever logging out.
There was also a google process that many folks reported a long while back that caused memory consumption that prevented VMs from starting as well.

  • Very low on system memory warning with plenty of memory left

    Hi,
I am using Premiere Elements 7 on Windows XP, AMD 3GHz dual core with 4GB memory. I create DVDs based on AVCHD files from a Canon HF100, almost no editing, 1 hour of DVD content (8 GB worth of AVCHD files) . I have done this with the same configuration in the past without problems, but lately Premiere has been very unstable, either crashing outright or giving me the following warning:
Adobe Premiere Elements is running very low on system memory. Please save your project and proceed with caution.
When I try to burn a DVD, this warning is always shows within minutes, followed by a transcoding error. I tried everything to free up more space, nothing else significant is running on my machine, and I have exited most other background processes. When the above warning is shown, physical memory consumption is is reported as following:
    Commit Charge: 1.8 GB
    Premiere Elements process: 1.1 GB
    Free memory: 1.5 GB
I also have virtual memory set to 8GB. Premiere scratch directories are on a disk with 500GB free space. I uninstalled and reinstalled Premiere, but no improvement.
Other relevant software on my machine, some of it installed after I had my last successful DVD burn:
Norton 360 2010 (Disabled Firewall and Autoprotect)
    Adobe Web Premium CS3
    Adobe Lightroom 2.5
    Copernic Desktop Search (Disabled)
A number of free video tools, like HandBrake, AutoGK, AVISynth, VobSub, DVD Decrypter, Xvid
    Tivo Desktop (Disabled)
    iTunes (Disabled)
Could there be any side effect from the other software? Any potential hardware problems I should investigate? Everything else works perfectly, including the other Adobe products.
I very much appreciate your help, Premiere is unusable at the moment and I have some DVDs I desperately want to create.
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Have you rendered your timeline?
If you're sceneline mode, switch to timeline mode. Is there a red line above your clips? If so, press Enter and let the program render your timeline (the red line will turn green).
This should greatly improve your program's stability and performance.
Also, ensure that the disc where you are storing your video files is formatted NTFS and not FAT32 (as they are when they come from the factory). FAT32 drives have a file size limit that can choke video work.
And, if this 500 gig drive is not your C drive, ensure that your C drive also has at least 30-50 gigs of free space, freshly defragmented and with its temp files regularly cleared.

  • P45 Platinum Optimum memory settings with 2GB Corsair 1066 memory

    Hi all,
Looking for some advice on optimum memory settings as I seem to have been getting unstable results from experimenting with settings and the optimum defaults.
    My configuration is as follows:
    MSI P45 Platinum (V1.0 PCB) (V1.4 Bios)
    Intel Dual Core Duo E8500
    Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15-2T configured for 2.2v in Bios
    Palit 9800GT
    2 x Maxtor 1TB HD's
    1 x Floppy + Memory card readers
    2 x Samsung DL-DVD-DW's
    Silverpower SP-400P2C 400W PSU
With the default optimised settings loaded, the system does not book reliably or pass the memory test, in fact memtest86 just hangs when booted
With the Memory configuration set to 1:1.33 (1600:1066) the systems appears to pass the memory tests and windows is relatively stable. Voltage set to 2.2volt with Spead Spectrum disabled.
Is this really the optimum configuration ? as the Adjusted DRAM Frequency reported by the bios is 887 and I was expecting to see 1066.
Any suggestions as how to optimise reliably would be appreciated.
Although I suspect I may have a PSU issue as once booted the system locks when running any 3D games/demo's and it looks liek the 9800GT's need a lot more amps that I thought when putting the system together.

First of all, your DDR2 modules are in fact DDR2-800 (they're using overclocked-overvolted DDR2-800 chips).
Sencondly you need to understand how a FSB/DRAM divider works.
Your processor is Intel E8500 and that means a bus frequency of 1333MHz (333MHz quad-pumped).
    In your case 1:1.33 means 1.33 x 333 x 2 = 887 MHz for the DDR2 modules.
Set the divider to 1:1.6 if you want the DDR2 modules to run at 1066MHz.
And finally, the "optimum configuration" for max system stability means real DDR2-1066 (7-7-7-20 at 1.8V) or
    DDR2-800 (5-5-5-15 at 1.8V).
    cheers

  • 2008 r2 hyper-v guest with static IP always looses network connectivity after every restart - no problem with DHCP

    Hello,
We are running 2008 R2 domain with one physical DC and other running in VM on Hyper-V host (2008 R2 Standard). The host has 4 NICs and is configured to use one physical NIC for itself (management) and the hyper-v guest is configured to use another dedicated/physical
NIC (through microsoft virtual switch) just for itself.
I noticed that after setting the hyper-v guest with a static IP address all works fine only until guest restart. When the guest boots up the IP address is still configured correctly in IPv4 properties, but there is no network connectivity at all and in fact
the guest shows running APIPA config in ipconfig /all output. That situation continues until I remove the virtual NIC from hyper-v guest, remove the virtual switch from dedicated NIC on host and then reconfigure it (using same settings as they were). very
    annoying.
For time being I switched the virtual DC (problematic hyper-v guest) to a DHCP IP and configured DHCP server (running on physical DC machine, not on hyper-v host) to store a reservation for the hyper-v guest so it always gets the same "static"
    IP configuration.
Is there some kind of a problem/bug with using static IP on (2008 R2) hyper-v guests? is there a hotfix for static IP config in hyper-v guest environment?
both 2008 R2 OSes (host and guest) are up to date with all updates (synced with Microsoft, not WSUS).

OK, I'm not at the office now, but took my time to test out the restart scenarios on problematic virtual guest remotely.
No dice, same as it was, everything works fine after guest has IP configured in DHCP mode (IP reservation of 192.168.1.5 for specific MAC address) and it doesn't work after restart in static IP mode (same address, works before restart of guest).
I also took "arp -a" outputs at each step from host server and that was always saying there is only a single host (192.168.1.5 = VDC = problematic virtual guest) assigned to that IP address and always with same MAC, so that pretty much rules out
ARP/MAC troubles and no issues with switches/routers getting spoofed. Problem is most likely with the virtual guest (WS2008R2) or within the host running same OS.
    Here are outputs:

On Monday I will install more test guests in Hyper-V host (WS2008R2), in variety of flavors like 7x64, 8.1x64, ws2012r2, and see if they show similar problems with static IP configuration when utilizing a dedicated NIC from host server.
Don't get me wrong, I can live with virtual DC running on DHCP IP reservation (which is based on MAC), because the virtual DC pretty much requires a physical PDC (hosting also DHCP in my network) to be present for safety reasons ... however I prefer a static
IP configuration on all servers, hence my question and surprise why it doesn't work.

It is not a hardware question. Memory leak issues are always an OS, an OS configuration, or an application issue.

  • Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
    1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
    2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
    3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
    4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
    5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :

  • What happens when a VM with 2012 Integrations Services migrates to a 2008 R2 Hyper-V server?

I've been going through our Hyper-V environment to make sure our VMs have the latest, greatest Integration Services installed. I found one 2012 running a 2012 version of Integration Services on this 2008 R2 Hyper-V server. What kind of issues can this
cause? Should I uninstall the current version and 'downgrade' them to 2008 R2?
    Orange County District Attorney

    Hi,
No, you should not. If the operating system is supported on a hyper-v version you can use it. This means if Windows Server 2012 is supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 hosts you can use Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Windows Server
2012 integration services installed as a guest OS.
You can find supported guest OS lists here

  • Move Virtual Machine from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Hyper-V Server 2012 fails with Error 2901

I have six Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 servers and two Hyper-V 2012 servers. I am running SCVMM 2012 SP1. I am trying to use "move virtual machine" from within SCVMM to move VMs from a 2008 host to a 2012 host. I have tried different VMs on different hosts
and they all fail with this error:
    ==========
    Error (2901)
The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid.
    The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)
    Recommended Action
Ensure that the parameters are valid, and then try the operation again.
    ==========
I have successfully created a VM on one of the 2012 hosts and moved it to the other 2012 hosts.  I can move VMs from 2008 host to 2008 host.  I just cannot move VMs from 2008 host to 2012 host.
    Does SCVMM 2012 SP1 not support moving VMs from Hyper-V 2008 to Hyper-V 2012?

    Hello Kevin,
Have you got an resolution yet ? Do you have latest update roll up pack applied to SCVMM 2012 SP1?
With SCVMM 2012 SP1  " Running VMs (Live Migartion) and VMs which are in Saved state or having checkpoints can not be migrated from 2008R2 host to 2012 Host "
above was fixed in SCVMM 2012 Update Roll up 1
Apart this please check the approx. size of data (VHDs) which will get transferred over the network , If you have large files chances are more to get such errors.
    Thanks

  • Low Memory Warning. . . with lots of memory left?

I keep getting a Low Memory Warning on my iPad and I have to click on OK. However, I have over 22GB left. Is this a known problem? What is the issue? Are my apps (games/videos) staying "open" even after I click the home button and if so how do I "close" them?

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions...
You can monitor "storage space" in the iTunes window.
Connect your iPad to your computer. Launch iTunes. Select your iPad under Devices on the left side of the iTunes window. Select the Summary tab.
You can see "Capacity" at the bottom of the iTunes window. If your iPad is telling you haven't enough space left try the suggestions here.

    5/9/13 10:54:01 AM
    kernel
    /!\ WARNING: corrected 257 parity error(s) in DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1 ( ferr = 0x20010000 nerr == 0x00000000 )
Each entry has a different parity number, but it's always the same riser and DIMM. About This Mac system info shows all DIMMs passed their checks and the other system self diagnostics is good too. Is it safe to assume this RAM chip is going bad? I will be removing it to see if that helps, but wanted to get some opinions first. Also, do I need to remove them in pairs?
I'm running a Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) and Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 24 GB RAM.
    Thanks.

Pairs. And take them out NOW before those parity errors do what they always do.... garbage out, and a dirty corrupt file. And then having to find files (sometimes hard to do or find).
    These work just fine:
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $32

  • My Macbook Air (circa ~2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning.

Hi, guys. I'm back again with the same issue. My aluminum Macbook Air (circa late 2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning. It comes back on as if nothing has happened, and I can even unplug as soon as I press the power button (twice, once to do...something, and the second to turn it back on). I have a brand new battery, so I know it's not that, nor is it an overheating issue. This is becoming very frustrating for me.
Before you recommend: I cannot possibly get to a Genius Bar appointment, because, unfortunately, Apple has no stores in West Virginia.
Thank you all for your help!

And have you already tried to reinstall the OS and you put in a new battery?
cant be monitor or fan, only possibility is onboard Ram / logic board or the SSD is going bad.
If the logic board / memory is bad,...the cost of which  would make repair a bit counterintuitive to replace given the age of the unit.
Does it does this plugged in or only on battery?  Does it hold a full charge.
