2008 R2 RDS Device Cals Period

Hello!
I have a question : Can i modify the grace period for the RDS Device Cals from 120 days to 1 or 2 days ?
Thanks!

Hi,
The server's grace period should automatically end as soon as a purchased Per Device RDS CAL is issued to a device.  For example, you install RDSH and RD Licensing, set the Licensing mode to Per Device, Specify the Licensing server name, Activate the
RD Licensing server, install RDS Per Device CALs, then connect twice from a PC.  After completing this the RDSH server should be out of the grace period and you should see in RD Licensing Manager that the Per Device CAL was issued to the
device.

Can I install RDS device cal of windows server 2012 in windows server 2008. If yes then what is the procedure.

    Hi,
Yes, you can use 2012 RDS CAL on 2008 licensing server, however, it needs to be downgraded to 2008.  Because it will installed as 2008 RDS CAL you cannot use it for 2012 Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) servers.  If you have 2012/2012 R2 RDSH
servers then you should install the RDS CALs on a 2012/2012 R2 RD Licensing server so that they can be used for both 2008 and 2012 RDSH servers.
I recommend purchasing RDS CALs via volume license program for best results.  On the 2008 R2 server, install RD Licensing Role Service, next open RD Licensing Manager, Activate the server, then install the CALs.  If you have a problem installing
the CALs please contact the Clearinghouse and explain to them you want to exercise your downgrade rights to downgrade your 2012 RDS CALs to 2008.  Have your licensing authorization number(s), license numbers, agreement numbers, paperwork, emails, etc.,
    ready before you call.
Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse Telephone Number for Your Country or Region
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754874.aspx
After you have successfully installed the RDS CALs please make sure the Licensing mode is set properly and the licensing server name is Specified in RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc) on your RDSH server.
    Thanks.

  • Multiple RDS Device CALs Issued through Windows 2003 RDS Hosts

    Environment
Windows 2012 R2 RDS license server issuing device CALs
    5 Citrix farms (PS4, PS4.5, XA5, XA6, and XA6.5)
    Symptoms
    - RDS device CALs issued through the PS4/Windows 2003 R2 and PS4.5/Windows 2003 R2 servers show the Citrix server name in the Window 2012 R2 RD license manager console instead of the workstation name (See below).
    - The PS4/Windows 2003 R2 and PS4.5/Windows 2003 R2 servers are issuing a large number of device CALs to workstations.  For example, we have two PS4/Windows 2003 R2 servers that publish a single application.  There are 20 users
of the applications with dedicated workstations that should all have a device CAL, but everyday I see device CALs being issued from these servers (See below).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi Scott,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you find any Error\Event Id for this case?
From the description it appears that there is some misconfiguration for redirecting the server during load balancing the device CAL among the server and that’s why device is getting misplaced. You can please relook at configuration for License server with following

  • If I apply a per device CAL does it stick with certain devices or when the devices sign off can new ones use the same licences

I purchased a per device CAL and was wondering about this because we have more than 5 devices. If one device is signed on and is using a licence then signs off does that licence become available for a new device then? Or am I stuck with the same 5 devices
even if they are not still signed on.

When an RDS device CAL is issued it remains assigned to the device it was issues to until it expires.  It cannot be used by another device until it expires.
An RDS per device cal is set to expire in a random inteval between 52 and 89 days.  Once this interval expires, the device Cal is returned to the pool.  You can revoke RDS CALs manually (up to 20% of your total) with Remote Desktop Licensing Manager.

    Hi,
Please help me to Uninstall Terminal Server Device CALS.
I have 25 Remote Desktop Services Device CAL but at time of  activation;   by mistake  i Installed 30 and 25 Licenses accordingly.  So i want to reset this license
database and re-install /activate the same as my license agreement.

    Hi,
You need to contact the Clearinghouse with your license agreement numbers, etc. again and explain to them that the licenses were installed as Per Device and you need
re- install /activate. They will help you install them again as Per Device.
The article below can help you find their phone number (it is for windows 2000, but is still relevant, just substitute "Remote Desktop Licensing" when it mentions
    "Terminal Services Licensing".)

  • 2008 RDS user cal License moving to 2012 server

    Hello ,
We have moved the 2008 RDS User Cal Volume License to the 2012 server .
In the RDS license Manager it is showing usage is showing as Zero even though users are using the service.
It is issuing the temporary license.
Does anyone have document how to follow the migrations process from 2008 RDS User Cal Volume License to the 2012 server.
    please provide the resolutions.

    Hi,
Please describe in more detail you current server configuration and what steps you have performed so far.
    1. Are the users logging on to a Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) server, or Server 2012/2012 R2 RDSH server?  If the RDSH server is 2012/2012 R2 then 2012 RDS CALs are required.  Additionally you need to configure the
licensing mode of the 2012 RDSH server to be Per User.  From your description it sounds like it is set to Per Device.  The licensing mode is set in the RDS deployment properties: Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Deployment Overview -- Tasks --
Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab.
    2. If the users are logging on to a Server 2008 R2 RDSH server, did you set its licensing mode to Per User and point it to the new 2012 RD Licensing server?  You can do this by logging on to the RDSH as an admin and opening RD Session Host Configuration
(tsconfig.msc) or by setting the appropriate group policy.
    Thanks.

  • RDS Per Device CAL - Where is it stored on the Client?

I'm having an issue with running out of CALs too quickly. 70 clients with 100 Licenses.
I have Deep Freeze on several of the Thin Clients. After restarting the thin clients the revert back to a default state, removing any changes. I believe that when my RDS server issues a CAL to one of these, the thin client looses the issues CAL to it once
it restarts. SO my question is, where Does the CAL get stored specifically so I can allow that area to be changed.

    Hi Jmair,
When Per Device licensing mode is used, and a client computer or device connects to an RD Session Host server for the first time, the client computer or device is issued a temporary
license by default. When a client computer or device connects to an RD Session Host server for the second time, if the license server is activated and enough RDS Per Device CALs are available, the license server issues the client computer or device a permanent,
RDS Per Device CAL. The temporary license is valid for 90 days.
An RDS Per User CAL gives one user the right to access an RD Session Host server from an unlimited number of client computers or devices. RDS Per User CALs are not enforced
by RD Licensing. As a result, client connections can occur regardless of the number of RDS Per User CALs installed on the license server. This does not absolve administrators from Microsoft Software License Terms requirements to have a valid RDS Per User CAL
for each user. Failure to have an RDS Per User CAL for each user, if Per User licensing mode is being used, is a violation of the license terms.
Client will get a Temp CAL while it firstly logged on the RDS server. After the client logged off and logged on the RDS Server again. The client will get a permanent CAL. So
you could see the temp CALs, it’s expected behavior.

  • RDS Per Device CAL - how the device is identificated?

    Hi,
How the client device is identificated for assigning the RDS Per Device CAL to it?
What happens if I reinstall my client computer OS? Change its network name? Add or remove some hardware (GPU card, memory, HDD, etc.)?
Will it be identificated as a new or old device? Will it get new or old RDS Per Device CAL?
    Thanks!

Adding or removing hardware generally wont change the RDS CAL usage, it will still be assigned to the machine, a computer domain rejoin may well result in an additional CAL being used, a rebuild will result in 2 CALs being used until the first one expires.
You always have the option to "revoke" a CAL but you can only do a limited number each month (I think).

  • How to convert per device cal to per user cal

    Dear Sir
We've installed windows server 2008 r2 on our server & configured rdsh for the same(as per user cal). I want to  use my erp software through rds from my other office. at a same time i want to use  it from my 3 machine remotly, pls advise me
which rds cal should i purchased for 3 machine. should i purchased 3 rds cals per device or per user,
I have recently purchased 1 no per device cal open license from my distributor(microsoft part no.6vc-02071).
If i want to use per user cal method, is it possible to convert this device cal to user cal , please tell me the steps for the same.

    Hi,
I think you may need to purchase Per User RDS CALs. As your users need to access the three machines remotely.
In addition, it is possible to convert.

  • Question concerning the state of licenses of a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server after disolving the Domain, the DC, and the AD.

Background: - several months back a Windows 2008 r2 domain existed with a DC, and an AD.  Windows servers where apart of this domain.  One of the servers being a Windows 2008 R2 server with Remote Desktop Services loaded.  The server was properly
licensed for 8 User CALS.  All was operating correctly.  Since that time the domain has been removed, the DC removed and the AD removed.  What is left are Windows 2008 R2 servers in a workgroup.  Again, one being the Remote Desktop Server.
Q1. Can the functioning Per User CALs (totaling 8) remain as Per User CALs?
Q2. Am I required to switch them to 8 Per Device CALs?
Referencing: "Best practices for setting up Remote Desktop Licensing...." - Article 2473823
In the above article it states under "RDS HOST and RDS Licensing servers are in the same Workgroup" that "We can use ONLY Per Device CALs in a workgroup environment. So, you should install only Per Device CALs on RDS licensing server."
( Which in my case they are both the same server.
Any information regarding what licensing options that can be used on a workgroup RDS server would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Yes, agree with the supporting article which you have commented. We can only use per device CAL under workgroup environment and if you want to use per user CAL then server need to be member of domain.
    Hope it helps!

  • Windows 2008 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I have Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 farm (with all of the application servers running Windows 2003) and I have just migrated from using a Windows 2003 server for the terminal services licensing to a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server for the licensing. We have
a number of thin-clients that connect to the Citrix farm and provide a kiosk for users. We have 85 per device licenses however we are only using 15 of those licenses (plans were made but never implemented to use the rest), so we have 70 available licenses.
The licenses are configured per device and as Windows Server 2003 licenses.
After the migration to 2008 R2, the thin-clients connected to the new licensing server without any trouble at all. As I monitored the licenses on the new server, each thin-client was given a temporary license first and then at the
next connection they got a permanent license. All of this I have been able to confirm through the event logs on the server.
However, what I get in the event logs of the new 2008 R2 licensing server an event with event ID 21 that says:
The Remote Desktop license server "ServerName" does not have any remaining permanent Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue
RDS CALs of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL" to the Remote Desktop Session Host server "vvv.xxx.yyy.zzz". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RD Session Host server matches the type of
RDS CALs installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional RDS CALs as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.
(Note I have removed the server name and IP address due to company policy.) I have confirmed that every server in my Citrix farm has its terminal services configuration set for "per device" licensing and I have also specified the name of the 2008
R2 server rather than allow the servers to automatically find the licensing server. I have confirmed that my 2008 R2 server is configured for "per device" licensing.
The IP addresses I have seen in the event log messages are the IP addresses of a Citrix server rather than one of the thin-clients, and so far every Citrix server we have has appeared in one of these event log messages. I have been able
to determine that this event does not occur when a thin-client is connecting up nor does this event occur when I remotely log into the server.
As I noted above we only have 15 thin-clients using the 85 licenses so we have 70 available licenses for the Citrix servers so why are we out of licenses? What is this message trying to tell me?
    Thanks
    Brent

    Hi Bent,
According the Event ID 21, I think you might have the license connection issues with RDS CALs. I suggest you analyze some relative services and
make sure your network without any misconfiguration.
Hopefully, there is an article describes how to troubleshoot this license issue on the terminal server.
Event ID 21 — Terminal Services Client Access License (TS CAL)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/A98D84AC-B824-4F00-BF58-3CFF23493BF9.aspx
By the way, the license of Windows Server 2003 does not support to assign CAL to allow user to access the Windows Server 2008. You should buy a
new Windows Server 2008 license to meet the requirement above if necessary.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to install device cals on Windows Server 2012 standard edition

Hello i have a windows server 2012 standard edition licence that i have taken on rent from an ISP.
i have created a domain controller on that.
By default only two users can use remote desktop to the server simultaneously.
My Requirement is 20 users can use remote desktop to the server at the same time. For that i have purchased 20 Delive CALs licences like volume licencing.
i have the licence number noted on the paper.
do i need to install remote desktop services first etc ?
Could anyone guide me step by step how can i install or configure so that 20 users can use remote desktop on the same time.

    Hi,
    Any update about the issue?
I would agree with others, you need to install Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses.
There are three methods by which you can install Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) onto your license server:
    • Install Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses Automatically
    • Install Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses by Using a Web Browser
    • Install Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses by Using the Telephone
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725890.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
Then you can install both Per User and Per Device CALs onto the same license server.
    Regards.

  • Device CALs User CALs?

This CAL thing is throwing me for a loop and maybe someone can help me out.
I'll lay out my network first.  I have 2 server currently, one is SBS 2008 and one is Server 2008 R2.  I plan on updating them to Server 2012 Standard.
The networks I have also have staff and students.  There is always a set amount of PC's being used about 14 hours a day.  Would it be better to get User CALs or Device CALs.
From what I read on the forum a Device CAL marrys to the device and a User CAL marrys to a profile or user login?  IF so is there any differences between the CALS?  If I buy the user CALs will the devices they use still be able to be managed?
    Thanks a bunch

For Windows CALs, it's all paper-based activity (i.e. there is nothing to download nor install nor configure on your systems).
per-device vs. per-user, the only thing which matters is the cost of buying them (they are otherwise identical from a use-rights perspective).
if you have more users (humans, not logon accounts) than you have devices (workstations, laptops, etc but not servers), then buy per-device CALs.
When a human sits at a device, and logs on to that device, and the logon authenticates to a Windows Server, you need a CAL for that authenticated connection to be properly licensed. In this scenario, either a User CAL, or a Device CAL, is acceptable.
If a user authenticates/connects at that workstation, to multiple Windows Servers (e.g. fileserverA and FileserverB), only a single Windows Server CAL is needed (i.e. you don't need a CAL for every server-connection).
So, you can buy either type, or, a mixture, whatever makes sense for your organisation's way of working, shared PC's, shiftworkers, etc.
In larger scenarios, it may be even more economical to look at "CAL Suites", or various other "bundles", if you have more than a few Windows Servers and other MS server-based products in your organisation.

  • Device CAL activation

What administrator tool do I use to active device cals on a single server?  I recently installed Server 2012 R2  on a stand along server.
I purchased a server license and 50 device cals.  I was able to activate the server with no problems. The support center told me to
use Remote Desktop to active the cals.  Will this work if I have only a single server?

    Hi,
    wich CALs do you mean?
if you mean Windows Server CALs, than you do not need any activation/Installation.
if you mean RDS CALs , than you need a license code to install RDS CALs onto your license server. A license code is provided when you purchase your RDS CALs. For more information, see Purchase Client Access Licenses (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=81077).
