2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services Problems With Older RDP Clients

I recently deployed a new 2008 R2 server to serve as a Terminal Server (Remote Desktop Services) for about 30 people. The new server is replacing a 2003 server. I expected the new machine to be a considerable upgrade and was looking forward to happy people
and less problems. Reality is I am finding several unexpected headaches - discouraging considering the amount of money we have spent on the new machine.
Most of the users connect via HP thin clients, they are the T5510, T5520 and T5530 thin clients. What I have found is performance issues when connecting via these thin clients. I believe the RDP client on these thin clients is RDP 5.5 or earlier. And I do
not believe it is possible to upgrade the RDP client version on the thin clients - I guess they are to be seen as "disposable".
The performance issues are: black blocks appearing when connected - and I have deselected bitmap caching - makes no difference. When typing in certain places the display of the typed characters could not keep up with the user. And lastly I have a weird thing
that just popped up today; where if the user goes to Google it freezes up their entire environment - I cannot even remote control the user/session - why this came up today and was not a problem before I am not sure.
With all of the above issues I have found that the problem goes away or does not exist if I connect to the server using an RDP client on an XP or 7 computer. So I have to conclude the RDP client is the problem.
Does anyone have information on this? Is there anything I can do as far as configuration on the server to allow me to use these older RDP clients? Do I have any alternative other than buying new thin clients?
thanks!

From your description, I also agree that the problem may be in the top RDP client.

Upgrading RDP to the latest version of HP Web site.
Let thin clients use to connect to the Remote desktop server with low load.
(1) Open the Remote desktop client in customer’s Thin Client
(2) Click Advanced option. In choose your connection speed to optimize performance area, you can select the low load option. For example, modem(56kbps).
I noticed that you have deselected bitmap caching in Remote Desktop Client options, but makes no difference. You can try again. Then please remember disconnect idle sessions and rational allocation of resources in Terminal Server.

  • Remote desktop connection issue with an RDP client while connecting to some of windows 2008 and 2003 operating system flavors and not receiving SDin value choice 26 from DomainMCSPDU

    Hi Team
We have our RDP client and i came across with one issue "Expected data got 3" with this client.
This issue is getting while connecting some of below operating system flavors.
    Microsoft Windows 2008 Enterprise edition
    Microsoft Windows 2008 Standard edition
    Microsoft Windows 2003 servers
When we are trying to get RDP to those servers with our client, getting "Expected data got 3" error. One more main thing here is the specified error is not getting for all the servers of same operating system in above list.
Able to get the RDP console for those servers using mstsc client.
When i read the [MS-RDPBCGR] specification, i found the below points
mcsSDin (variable): Variable-length PER-encoded MCS Domain PDU (DomainMCSPDU) which encapsulates an MCS Send Data Indication structure (SDin, choice 26 from DomainMCSPDU), as specified in [T125] section 11.33 (the ASN.1 structure definitions
are given in [T125] section 7, parts 7 and 10). The userData field of the MCS Send Data Indication contains a Security Header and a Valid Client License Data (section 2.2.1.12.1) structure.
In my code i am not getting SDin value as 26. Is it the problem with Remote desktop Licensing in RDP servers as specified in the specification like "The userData field of the MCS Send Data Indication contains a Security Header and a Valid
Client License Data (section 2.2.1.12.1) structure."
Could you please explain me is this issue is happening due to Licence configuration in RDP server and please provide support with server side configuration if any because our code works for other servers ?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Pavan G.

  • Remote desktop connection issue with an RDP client while connecting some 2008 servers and getting "unimplemented type in main loop"

    Hi
For the working RDP server console we are getting the below PDU types only.
    // PDU Types
    RDP_PDU_DEMAND_ACTIVE = 1
    RDP_PDU_CONFIRM_ACTIVE = 3
    RDP_PDU_DEACTIVATE = 6
    RDP_PDU_DATA = 7
    Null PDU type = 0
Where as for some windows 2003 servers getting "unimplemented type in main loop 13" instead of above mentioned PDU types.
Could you please provide when we get this other PDU types ?
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hello Pavan -
I'll help you with this inquiry. By setting minencryptionlevel = 0 on server, are you able to get server->client unencrypted PDUs in network trace ? If yes, please send me the same by dropping a mail to dochelp @ Microsoft dot com.

  • Intermittent Disconnects for clients of 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services

Hello, I have an issue that I am trying to work on for a client who is experiencing intermittent disconnected sessions when logged into a Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services (RDS) server.
As I mentioned, the disconnect is intermittent in nature and almost appears to be network related, although I cannot find any data in the Application, System, or application specific logs to support that.
The RDS server overall does not exhibit any error, but the user's session is briefly interrupted and then restored.  I would like to be able to gain some additional information about what is going on under the hood, but I am having trouble finding any
details on how to turn on debug logging for Terminal Services (er, RDS) on 2008 R2.
Can someone provide some additional details on what kind of logging or other means that I can take on this server in order to gain some additional insight?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi,
There are certain reason for which the client get disconnect from the server. The following are some of the commonly seen symptoms:
    • You may be limited in the number of users who can connect simultaneously to a Remote Desktop session or Remote Desktop Services session.
    • You may have a port assignment conflict.
    • You may have an incorrectly-configured Authentication and Encryption setting.
    • You may have a certificate corruption.
    More information.

If you want to have log for login\logoff for the client on server end then you can get the information from below log.

  • Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services - user profile path not working

Trying to setup remote desktop profiles. We have 1 farm with 2 Windows 2008R2 RD session hosts and a broker server and want the all of the remote user  profiles to reside on a dedicated profile server. We've created the user shares but when a remote
user logs in their user profiles is automatically created on the session hosts. Each remote users profile path is specified in AD under the user's Remote Desktop Profile tab.
I've seen posts about creating a GPO to handle roaming profiles but I'm not sure as to where this needs to be created...should it be done on each of the session hosts? Are their any step by step instructions out there on how to achieve this that I just haven't
    found yet?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Do you have RD Gateway setup in your environment?
Have you configure RD Connection Broker and set the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the RD Connection Broker server in case of RD Connection Broker mode. In RD Session mode, it is set to the FQDN of the RD Web Access server.
Client operating systems must trust the certificate with which the RemoteApp programs are signed. Suggest to install RDP 8.1 for client OS.
Do you have a trusted certificate with a matching name configured on your RDSH server in RD Session Host Configuration? (Means cert must match the name that clients use to connect to it for running the RemoteApp).
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Remote Desktop Connection problem with multiple Lenovo machines

    Hello,
I've been running into issues with connecting to some of the latest Lenovos we purchased using RDP. It has happened with a batch of 3 x220s and a batch of 2 Thinkstation C20s (possibly others that I haven't yet had to remote into).
The symptoms are maddening in the paucity of information given for the failure. It basically goes like this -- type in the name of the computer and hit connect. Immediately I get a "this computer can't connect to the remote computer"; it's so sudden that it seems to be getting rejected immediately. I've check every windows log (even the ones under Applications and Services) and the ONLY thing logged (on the destination computer) is that an RDP session was initiated. NO reason is given for the failure. No error event given.
Has anyone else run into this? I'm having to use 3rd party software to log in to computers, which is becomming a nuisance as I am trying to set up computers at a branch office for new users. Is there some way to debug RDP? I ran a packet sniffer and a total of 6 packets are passed for these "sessions" -- mostly TCP handshake packets at that, and only one actual RDP packet. Is there a more verbose log I should be looking at?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you can't connect to your new or restored Lenovo with the OEM install of Windows 7, it may very well be that the particular registry key below is not set to the typical default value (I think Lenovo has messed up their OEM install image). The two secrity packages 'tspkg' and 'pku2u' are missing on OEM Lenovo images.
    This registry key:
    HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa\security packages
    Should look like this:
kerberos msv1_0 schannel wdigest tspkg pku2u
Fix it and RDC will connect.
(may need a reboot to take effect)

  • Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service Role pickup 2012 RDS License Server.

I am installing Citrix onto a Windows 2008 R2 server as part of this I need to setup the RDS Role on the same box and then point it to the Windows RDS License server.
Our plan is to have a Windows 2012 License server for RDS Licenses i.e. install 2012 RDS Licenses.
I was wondering if it was possible for a 2008 R2 RDS role to pick up 2012 RDS Licneses from a Windows 2012 RDS Server?

  • To install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP1

    Dear Sir,
Presently we have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP 1. And now i would like to install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on this server. I have 25 digit product key of Windows Server
2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services User CAL (20). Downloaded this product key from our MSDN Subscriptions.
Kindly suggest me how to install (CAL server with product key that i have) and configure remote desktop services on my above existing server also how to point other server with my CAL server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. Install Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.
    2. Open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe), Activate your server, then install your license
    3. In RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc), set the Licensing mode to Per User and Specify your RD Licensing server name (itself).  If you want you may configure these two settings via group policy setting instead.  The path of the
group policy settings is Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
    4. You may point other RDSH servers to your RD Licensing server using RD Session Host Configuration or via group policy as mentioned above.
    5. Optionally you may consider installing other Remote Desktop Role Services such as RD Gateway, RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, etc.

  • Terminal Services (TS) or Remote Desktop Services (RDS) scenario clarifications

    Dear Support,
    Question:
Do I still need to purchase RDS CALS license? or can use MSDN CALs in the Terminal Server?
Due to MSDN subscribers are End users, do not use Production Data and have to demo their developed applications to other End users group.
    Scenario:
    1. Use only Remote Desktop Session.
    2. End users are MSDN Subscribers.  (Although stated by Microsoft End users are non MSDN subscribers)
    3. End users demo applications to End users.
    4. End users develop their applications and have to demo to other End users group.
    From MSDN link:
Client Access Licenses for Terminal Services
With an MSDN subscription, you are allowed to provide end users access to Internet demonstrations of your programs via Terminal Services (Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008) or Remote Desktop Services (Windows Server 2008 R2). Up to 200 anonymous
users can simultaneously access your demonstration this way. Your demonstration must not use production data. MSDN subscribers are licensed to demonstrate their applications to end users,
but Terminal Services (TS) or Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is the only scenario where end users without an MSDN subscription can interact with the demonstration application while the software is licensed through MSDN subscriptions.
    Accessing CALs
MSDN subscribers can access CALs for demonstration purposes through the
Product keys page of MSDN Subscriber Downloads. Please access the documentation resources online for assistance with the
Terminal Server activation process. If you have any questions, please visit the Microsoft
    Terminal Services forum.

  • User profile vs Remote Desktop Services Profile

On a Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller, if you open properties of an user account, you'd see
a Profile Tab as well as Remote Desktop Services Profile Tab.
I found this very confusing, can any one tell be the key difference between those 2?
If I don't specify Remote Desktop Services Profile path, when I logon to Remote Desktop Server, it seems take user's
    romaing profile.
    Anyway, please advice.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
The profile tab of the user properties window allows you to configure user profile, logon scripts and home folder details for the user object. It is very useful when you have to allow your user access the same environment and data irrespective of the machine
    he logs in from.
Active Directory User properties – Profile tab
    Remote Desktop Services User Properties
You can specify a Remote Desktop Services-specific profile path and home folder for a user connecting to an RD Session Host server. This profile and home folder will only be used for Remote Desktop Services sessions. You should assign a separate profile for
Remote Desktop Services sessions because many of the common options that are stored in profiles, such as screen savers and animated menu affects, are not desirable when using Remote Desktop Services.

  • Audio service hangs on Windows Server 2008R2 with Remote Desktop Services

    Hello!
I have some terminal servers on Windows Server 2008R2. Users have the ability to use web browsers (IE, Firefox) with the included Flash Player, IM clients / Internet
telephony (Skype, ICQ), Windows Media Player, Office, and a specific internal software (works with MS SQL). I have the following problem: the Windows audio service hangs up that leads to hangup of all programs which use it, such as: any sites in Internet with
a flash content (in all browsers), ICQ, Skype.Even logging out the session hung when tried to lose a sound. It's impossible to stop or restart service from the services.msc the service just hang with status "restarting". To stop service I terminate svchost
process. As soon as the audio service is stopped - all programs start to work correctly (certainly without a sound). This problem appeared not suddenly - periodic hangups of programs on servers were marked long ago (more than half a year), but not directly
were connected to audio service, especially there were they rather rare (on the average once a week - two) and were corrected by server reset. The error message:

shall suggest an idea about a sound service, but in Event Viewer has no Windows Audio events.
Recently I updated Skype to the last version 6.0.66.120. Before was 4.2.35.155 because versions 5хх on Windows2008R2 with the Remote Desctop Services actually don't
work, if users at the server more than one or two. We checked the sixth version by the test machine with the terminal environment and very were delighted to its normal working capacity. However after installation of this client on production servers it appeared
that hangups of programs on servers began to occur on the average time at an o'clock in case of an average daily load (about 20 users on one server). If you have worked one or two users, problems weren't watched. Internet search led me to the support page
Skype, where the Windows 7 x64 user faced a similar problem in the fifth version of the program. But the solutions proposed by the support team does not help me. In addition, I found the advice to disable enhancements in the properties of the playback device,
but it is impossible for the "Remote Audio" device.
At the moment, on servers where I updated the Skype, I disabled the audio service. If within a reasonable time, I do not find a solution, I will have to revert
to an older version of Skype, but I would like to solve the problem completely.

Enable the Allow audio and video playback redirection Group Policy setting
To allow audio and video playback when connecting to a computer running Windows Server 2008 R2, you must enable the Allow audio and video playback redirection Group Policy setting. The Allow audio and video playback redirection Group Policy setting is located
in Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection and can be configured by using either Local Group Policy Editor or the Group Policy Management
    Console (GPMC).
For more information about Group Policy settings for Remote Desktop Services, see the Remote Desktop Services Technical Reference (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=138134).
    Is this policy applied? Refer:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd759165.aspx
Also, have you tried update the audio device driver for this terminal server?

  • Remote Desktop Services Printer Redirection with easy print not working as Desired

    Hi,
I have a Terminal Server Farm with a number of Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host Servers in the Environment. There is also a RD Gateway server which is used to connect to the RD Session host servers in the environment. We
had configure the policy "Use Terminal Services easy Print Driver First" for all the RD Session Host servers. Everything was working well untill a couple of users Complaint about slow printing on Easy Print. While trying to troubleshoot the issue we came
to know that when we by-pass the RD Gatewat and make a Direct connection to the RD Session Host Servers we are able to Print Really fast using Easy Print. Only When we use the RD gateway server we get the problem with the Printing.
As we could not get through this problem and we are not in a condition to by-pass RD Gateway for connections we decided to put the TS Easy print Driver as a Second option. We went ahead and identified the 3 printers for which printing was slow. we
Installed the Drivers for the same printers on all the Terminal Server and Disabled the policy "Use Termianl Server Easy print Driver First". After this we were able to print fast on the 3 printers having Slow printing issues. All the other Printers were using
    Easy print.
After a day we realised that there were more than 20 drivers for Different printers installed in the Print Server Properties. We started getting viered problems with the Printing on all the Terminal servers like, Print Spooler Service Crashing, Hanging,
Users not able to redirect printers at all. To avoid this we Removed the Driver Packages but they came back the very next day.
I am not sure what could be causing this kind of behavior. I would really appriciate if someone can help he with these two problems
    1) Easy print Working Slow only when using RD Gateway Server
    2) Printer Drivers Getting installed on Terminal Servers when Easy Print Policy is disabled.

    1) Easy print Working Slow only when using RD Gateway Server
    > Difficult to track down especially through forum. Looking for some known issues/hotfixes
954743 FIX: After you apply hotfix 954744, printing performance may be significantly slower when you print documents by using Terminal Services Easy Print
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=954743
The Remote Desktop Easy Print (RD Easy Print or TS Easy Print) uses the XPS print driver that ships with .NET Framework.
    2) Printer Drivers Getting installed on Terminal Servers when Easy Print Policy is disabled.
    > If Easy print is not the first driver then it installs the driver if they are InBox drivers
    > If these are non-inbox drivers - This is because administrators are RDPing to the server from another PC with several printer/drivers installed.
When they RDP with printer redirection enabled, the drivers get automatically installed.
To avoid this, either turn off printer redirection at server level from RDP-TCP properties - might not be feasible if users need redirected printers
Else make sure that when admins RDP, printer redirection is turned off so that drivers are not automatically installed
This was a major issue in 2k3, i havent tested it in 2k8 though
This behavior is related to the change you made in Easy print driver behavior

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro Application Launcher Remote Desktop Services Feed VDI with Windows Store Remote Desktop Client

I wanted to make kiosks which are joined into a domain and set up with an Remote Desktop Web Feed with VDI Desktops (to support Single Sign On and minimize configuration needs on the client side). And I wanted to lock those Clients to launch only the Remote
Desktop Windows Store application. And if somebody clicks on a Desktop Pool then connect to the choosen Pool. But instead of doing this the Remote Desktop application opens the Pool within the old mstsc.exe and right after connecting the OS switches the focus
back to the Remote Desktop Windows Store application. And nobody can work in the office with this configuration.
So how can I correct this problem? Any other solutions? What is the official way to doing this?

    Hi,
Based on my test, we cannot associate .rdp files with the Remote Desktop Windows Store App. Therefore, you may have to use MSTSC or configure the setting in the Remote Desktop
    Windows Store App manually.
    Best Regards.
