2008 RDS user cal License moving to 2012 server

Hello ,
We have moved the 2008 RDS User Cal Volume License to the 2012 server .
In the RDS license Manager it is showing usage is showing as Zero even though users are using the service.
It is issuing the temporary license.
Does anyone have document how to follow the migrations process from 2008 RDS User Cal Volume License to the 2012 server.
please provide the resolutions.

Hi,
Please describe in more detail you current server configuration and what steps you have performed so far.
1. Are the users logging on to a Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) server, or Server 2012/2012 R2 RDSH server?  If the RDSH server is 2012/2012 R2 then 2012 RDS CALs are required.  Additionally you need to configure the
licensing mode of the 2012 RDSH server to be Per User.  From your description it sounds like it is set to Per Device.  The licensing mode is set in the RDS deployment properties: Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Deployment Overview -- Tasks --
Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab.
2. If the users are logging on to a Server 2008 R2 RDSH server, did you set its licensing mode to Per User and point it to the new 2012 RD Licensing server?  You can do this by logging on to the RDSH as an admin and opening RD Session Host Configuration
(tsconfig.msc) or by setting the appropriate group policy.
Thanks.

  • How to specify RD USER cal for particular session host server on a licensing server.

    Hello,
I have 25 user cal license which I want to deploy to my 5 session host servers (5 user cal for each host)
I got 1 licensing server, where I have installed these licenses and pointed all other servers to it.
but I dont see any option to reserve 5 for each host. (4 win  2008R2, 1 win 2003 separate to each other no session host)
    Thanks

I would always have two licence servers for resilience.

  • RDS user CALS expired after 60 days but still active

    Hello Technet,
I have installed 15 RDS user CALs on my server. 3 of them haven't been used for 60 days and expired yesterday.
But they are still listed as "active" what mens they are not available for other users.
What can I do to "free" those expired RDS user CALs?
    Thanks,
    Florian

    OK, the question answered itself:
Server 2012R2 RDS User CALs expire after 60 days if they are not used. They get "free" and can be reassigned exactly
24 hours after the expiration time!

  • How to assign RDS 2012 R2 temporary license per RDS user CAL

we have setup  two RDS servers of 2012 r2 runnning with both RDSH roles, RDP-1 is the license server and in RDP-2 its pointed to RDP-1 to take license and licensing mode is set as per user. users are getting license in per user mode of 60 days validity.
Question is how to get temporary license assigned for users in per user mode, this is requirement for testing the license in our company as it is setup just now.So i have removed the pointing of license server in RDP-2 using Group policy, but still cannot
see a temporary license in RDP-1 -> License Manager.
Pls help to solve this issue.

    Hi,
As per my research by default there are 2 remote session available for administrative purpose only. Once you want more than 2 remote session for user to connect we need to purchase RDS CAL (as you know), activate the license server and then configure the purchased
RDS CAL with the help of MS Clearing house. There is no way to assign the temporary license, but when you install the RD License server, activate it and once user will get login by default will get user temporary license for specified days such as 60. Within
that time you need to purchase the CAL and complete rest process. You can get more information from following article.

  • How can I know if my CAL license is valid for server 2012

    Hi everyone,
I have a domain where all the server are  Windows Server 2008R2, Due to certain progams that are about to enter the organization I have to deploy several new servers that will run server 2012R2 and possibly upgrade a few existing ones to 2012R2 as well.
That is however not the problem.
I recently found out the remote desktop servers that run the RD licensing role, Don't serve windows server 2012, but if I deploy a new RDS with server 2012 R2 it can serve both my old 2008 R2 servers and my new 2012 R2 servers. First I'd like to know if
it's correct and if any of you have tried that in the past. Furtner, I need to know if the CAL license that's installed on my 2008 R2 server is valid for 2012R2 servers as well, is there a way to find that out?
    Hoping for a quick response.

    Hi David,
You are correct, a 2012 R2 server can license your 2008 R2 servers, but your 2008 R2 CALs will not work to license connections to 2012 R2. A good wiki here...

  • B1 SDK Development License - Moving To Another Server

We are a relatively new business partner and are preparing to purchase a SDK development license.  After being installed and licensed, can the license be moved to another server?  If so, what needs to be done to complete this transaction?

    Thomas,
You should go to the SAP PartnerEdge Portal if you are a partner at service.sap.com/smb.  Choose SAP Business One and then Licensing Request.  This page will give you all the information that you need to request a new development license key and "give back" your existing license key.  Licenses are hardware dependent so you would need a new one.

  • Hyper-V user CAL licensing

    Hello
For Hyper-V host there's no need to have user or device CAL for accessing guest VMs. So if I have VMs only with for example Ubuntu systems, I don't need any CAL in my environment. Is that right? I think, yes.
So the next question is, what about the case, when users want to connect to Hyper-V Server for having access to tools like console, restarting or snapshoting their VMs. Do I need CALs for them?

  • Moving SCCM 2012 Server and DB to New Hardware

We're planning to move our SCCM 2012 SP1 installation to a new VM running Server 2012 R2. We're planning on keeping the same server name so the Site Backup and then restore looks like it will work for us. We'd also like to move the DB to a new, remote, SQL
2012 box. Does the DB need to be restored to a SQL box with the same name as well?

No sql does not need to be reinstalled on the same server but you might want to do it as a two step process. Move SQL then move the CM server.

  • Unable to remove WS 2008 RDS 5 User CAL from WS2012 RDS Server

    Hi All,
I'm hoping you can assist with this as it's causing me a headache... :(
My client has installed a WS2008 5 user RDS CAL into his 2012 server (im unsure why) and converted it to a 5 device CAL.
He's since sold the licence to a third party as it was a retail package and has asked me to remove the license from the 2012 server.
I've tried the usual methods of removing the RDS role and re-installing and uninstalling the license through the powershell (the command executes successfully but the licenses remain).
Does you know how this can be uninstalled without having to re-install the OS?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I'm assuming there are no other RDS CALs installed on this RD Licensing server.  If my assumption is incorrect please let me know before continuing.  The below procedure will
delete all installed RDS CALs so only complete the steps if you have the information (authorization number, agreement number, emails, paperwork, etc) on the installed licenses.
In RD Licensing Manager, right-click on the server name and choose Advanced -- Deactivate.  After it is finished deactivating close RD Licensing Manager.  Open Services.msc and stop Remote Desktop Licensing service.  Open windows explorer
and remove all contents that are in the following folder:
    C:\Windows\System32\lserver
Back in services.msc, Start Remote Desktop Licensing.  Open RD Licensing Manager and Activate/Install RDS CALs if needed.

  • CAL Licensing For 2008 R2 Standard Server

    Hi All
I am upgrading a 2003 Domain Controller with 20 CALs to a 2008 Server R2 Domain Controller that comes with 5 CALs.
Firstly, can I use the existing 20 CALs with the new 2008 R2 server?
Secondly, for the life of me I cannot find anywhere that sells Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard CAL licenses. Which I would require 15 of to match my original 20.
Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!
    Ashley Colton

    Hi Ashley,
For Server 2008 R2 you need 2008 or later version of CALs.  You cannot use your 2003 licenses.  Typically what you would do is purchase the latest license version (2012) and they will cover the previous version.  Below is sample pricing
for 2012 CALs only (no Software Assurance) for Open Business licensing program:
Windows Server 2012 User CAL Open Business  Part# R18-04281 $29.47
    http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-r1804281~1350612209.htm
Windows Server 2012 Device CAL Open Business Part# R18-04277  $25.63
    http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-r1804277~1350612599.htm
I recommend you contact a major Microsoft reseller and ask to speak to a Microsoft Volume Licensing specialist.  They can help you determine the correct licensing program for you, give you correct part#s, etc.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard and Essentials User CAL's

I've been running Windows Server 2012 Essentials in an organization that until recently stayed within the 25 user 50 network device limit specified by the license. Eventually we've grown beyond that. Since the Server 2012 Essentials machine had a non-transferable
OEM license I decided not to waste it by doing an in-place migration to Server 2012 Standard, and instead set up a new server with freshly purchased Server 2012 R2 Standard and migrated Active Domain roles to it, leaving the original server as a part of a
    fail-over cluster.
We purchased 30 User CAL's for the 2012 R2, as required for 25+ staff members.
Now I am curious. The 2 servers that we have right now (2012 R2 Standard and 2012 Essentials) both maintain the same Active Directory and manage the same pool of users and workstations. Does that mean that the primary server with 30 User CAL's takes dominance
and sets the limit as to how many people are allowed to access the network. Or does it become a combination of purchased 30 CAL's + 25 Users hard-wired into the 2012 Essential edition?
Do these servers have to run separate domains with segregated pools of users in order to be license compliant for 30+ users or can they exist within the same same domain preserving individual user limits? What if the 2012 Essentials server maintains
one office location with fewer than 25 staff and the Standard R2 2012 server runs another office with fewer than 30 staff, while both offices are linked via a VPN for the purpose of sharing 3rd party licenses? Do individual user limits apply, or is it still
    30 users max?
To sum up the question, I'd like to know whether I'd need to buy more user CAL's when we reach more than 30 staff at 1 or possibly 2 office locations.
Oh, and the device limit! 2012 R2 Standard under user CAL licensing scheme has no machine limits. Essentials is always capped at 50. When running one active directory, what's the legally allowed number of devices on the network? I assume it's unlimited.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for the reply.
My question then is how to transition while preferably keeping both physical servers.
Should a 2012 Standard key be purchased additionally for an in-place transition of 2012 Essentials machine to 2012 Standard (which at this point is as good as a fresh install)? Until then, should the Essentials 2012 server be taken offline entirely?
What about the situation where I described both servers running segregated networks with their own pools of users, only connected via a VPN for 3rd party license sharing? Is that configuration supported?
Also, if the configurations is unsupported, why are the servers able to share roles in first place? Why isn't there a software mechanism preventing interaction? What configuration do the servers themselves assume is in place?
    Thanks again.

  • Downloading RD user cal from Microsoft Volume site

    Hello,
I am running across Microsoft Volume site for past 30 mins, but cannot find anything like RD User CAL license.
only thing closet I can see is "WinRemote Desktop SrvsCAL 4.5 w/Application Virt for Term" , is that the same?
I have build a traditional Win 2008R2 terminal server (session host) and no remote app.
What exactly the RD user cal name should look like?
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
You need the authorization number and license number (in the case of Open license) or agreement number for other volume programs like Select, Enterprise, etc.  When using the Install Licenses wizard in RD Licensing Manager you will need to
    enter these number(s).
If you purchased 2012 RDS CALs and want to install them on a 2008 R2 RD Licensing server then you will need to downgrade them first by contacting the Clearinghouse.  Alternatively you may install the 2012 RDS CALs on a 2012 RD Licensing server
(if you have one) and point your 2008 R2 server to it.  The 2012 RD Licensing server will automatically handle the downgrading as needed.

  • CAL License problem

    Dear all,
I have a server is running windows server 2003 and already purchase 30 CAL license. now i upgrade my OS, i already purchase windows server 2012 and a downgrade kit from 2012 to 2008 R2. So my question is any CAL license i need to purchase?

    Hi James,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you setup RDS environment? If so then you have RDS CAL. From your description it seems that you have 30 USER CAL. If you have server 2012 CAL then you can able to manage lower version of server 2008 R2 but vice versa is not possible.
