2008 to 2012 Express
Hello.
I currently have an application running on a server with SQL 2008 (Server 8.0.760). I am moving to a new application on a new server running SQL 2012 Express (11.0.2100). Can the tables be copied from sql 2008 and recreated in sql 2012? I don't want to lose
the 2008 database until the testing is completed fro the 2012 database.

First just make sure SQL server 2008 version no will be 10.0.XXX not 8.0.760.
Yes tables can be copied. You can backup database present on SQL server 2008 and restore it on 2012.
Now for no data loss.I suggest a side by side upgrade.Take a new windows box install sql server 2012 express .Restore backup of 2008 here .Now test your application. After you are ok with test move completely to 2012 meanwhile your 2008 is still active
Just in case if DB is 2000 you cannot restore it directly .You have to restore it to 2005/2008/2008 r2 and then from there take backup again and restore it to 2012.
I would also like to know version of 2008 .Can you run below query and post result here
select @@version

SQL Express 2008 to 2012 express upgrade not working
I'm trying to upgrade an older version of SQL Express 2008 to 2012 by first upgrading to (what I think is) 2008 SP3 (10.0.5500.0).
The upgrade to 2008 SP3 says it has completed and the version of the browser and client etc are showing as 10.3.5500.0 but the SQL Server version is still showing as 10.0.2531.0 in the errorlog. When I run the 2012 install exe (11.0.2100.60) it is failing
on "SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or later is required"
I'm not very experienced when it comes to SQL so any help would be appreciated. You are probably using a regular version of SP3 to upgrade. Express edition has a separate download which included service packs.
Please download the appropriate package from this link, provide the same instance name which you want to upgrade (as if you were to install a new instance with that name) and setup will run in upgrade mode". It will apply SP3 on existing express instance.

Let me know if you need help selecting the right exe from the above link.

SQL Server 2008/2012 Express Connection Problem
Hello,
since a couple of days I'm working on a problem with the SQL Server Express (32-Bit as well as 64Bit).
I installed a new SQL Server 2008 with an instance named SQL2012 and the Management Studio 2008 R2 on the same machine. I easily am abled to connect to the Server using the Management Studio with several Server Name settings (localhost, IP, (local), .\SQL2012).
Now I have a self-written programm (C#) wich should connect to the Server, but it does not work. It is definitely not a problem of the programm code because the same programm is abled to connect to a SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition. Similar Problem with
the 2012 Express Version (2012 Enterprise not tested).
The connection string I use and wich is working with connecting on the Enterprise Edition is: Server=Servername\Instance;Database=DatabaseName;User Id=user;Password=password;
Anybody any solution why the Express-Version refuses to connect?
(Sorry if I have made several failures in my text, English is not my native language)It Occurs when I try to ping.Send the Server to see if he is active. If I skip this step and try to connect directly to the server (con.Open()) I get the exception:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The
server was not found or it can not be accessed. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server allows remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Connection with the SQL Server couldn't be opened) -
SQL Server 2012 Express error 9002 while restoring a backup from 2008
Hi all,
I have installed SQL Server 2012 Express on my laptop operating with win 8. Then I took the backup in my old laptop with SQL Server 2008R Express / Windows 7 and tried to restore it to the new one.
After it restored it produced an error messaging saying that restore failed. The error code was 9002 and it says due to NOTHING. I checked the log file it is a file of 1024 kb size, not big. When I installed the SQL 2012 I disabled the autogrowth of the
log file (exactly same setting as I had with 2008) The log is not big. I tried to further shrink, no change.
Moreover the db is already there with full records, I can manipulate it. Even take a back w/o problems. What is this issue? Is it resolved?
thanksan error messaging saying that restore failed. The error code was 9002
and it says due to NOTHING. I
select *
from sys.messages
where message_id = 9002
=> "The transaction log for database '%ls' is full due to '%ls'. "
Is your disk may low on free space?

SQL Server 2012 Express Instance is Not Discovered
I have a single SQL Server 2012 Express instance that is the backend database for a small door security application. I just noticed after having deployed the OpsMgr agent months ago that it never discovered the SQL instance. The SQL instance
is, as stated, Express, and it's the only Express instance I have. Is that why it is not discovered? All the documentation I found seems to indicate the opposite -- that Express is discovered and there are steps you can take to exclude Express
instances. I have no overrides set to exclude any instance or any database.
- System Center Operations Manager 2012 RTM (no SP1, no R2)
- SQL Server 2012 MP version 6.3.173.1
- SQL Server is Windows Server 2012
- SQL Server 2012 Express running on a Hyper-V VM. Instance is named DOORSERVER\Eclipse
- Agent is installed and other discoveries seem to be working fine
- No discovery errors in the event log related to SQL, although there is one about the Windows Server 2008 discovery not being able to start, but I'm on Windows Server 2012, so I am guessing that's okay?
- No overrides are set on the discovery
- Discovery has found every other SQL Server 2012 instance (standard and enterprise editions)Well, just realized I didn't have the latest MP. Upgrading to 6.4.1.0 version of the SQL MP fixed the discovery issue.

I need help installing SQL Server 2012 Express
I am very much an amateur. I got a new machine. The old one had Server 2008 R2 but the recommendation was that I need to move to 2012 Express.
When I moved to the new machine, the mover (LapLink) screwed up the version of 2008 R2. IOW, I now have to go forward and install 2012..
I downloaded all the 64 bit files (5 of them). When I start SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe, the process starts and then I'm given the choice of a new install or upgrade. I chose the new install. The process started and I got the following message ...
"Failed to retrieve data for this request.."
There are no hints anyplace as to what this means.
When I click "OK", a new status window pops up and proclaims that something is wrong. Then all activity stops.
I don't know what to do. I can't use either version and I really can't tell you much more to help me.
Eric JohnsonI'm not certain how to send the log material so I'll just cut 'n paste the file named "Summary_Eric-PC_20140921_134001_GlobalRules" If this isn't the right way, please forgive me and suggest what is right. Anyway, here goes ...

SQL Server 2012 Express Install on Windows 7 SP1 Embedded not using virtual account?
Hi there,
I did a default installation of SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows 7 embedded Standard SP1.
When I look at the SQLSERVER service credential it is configured to run under "NETWORK SERVICE" instead of the virtual account "NT SERVICE\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS".
This is different from SQL 2012 Express installation on a non-embedded Windows 7.
Why is this difference?
Secondly, because of this, I am unable to take a backup of databases to any folder other than the default SQL folder.Hi Chandrasekaran,
As Local Service account, the Network Service account and high privileged Local System account could be used by many services.
It becomes harder to track which service is actually accessing resources and performing actions, because all the services are using the one Network Service account or other account.
In Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2, it introduces a new type of account called a virtual account, which emulates creating many unique instances of the Network Service account, so each service runs with its own instance of the Network Service account.
For example, when you install SQL 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 and later you’ll see the services run with virtual service accounts named like:
in the format NT SERVICE\<SERVICENAME>.
According to your description, when the SQLSERVER service was run under “NETWORK SERVICE”, you only back up database to the default SQL folder. It may be caused by the NETWORK SERVICE account has limited local privileges, just accesses network
resource with the computer credential. I recommend you change the account to Local System account, by default, which has full permissions on your computer.
For more information about SQL Server service account and virtual account, you can review the following articles.

Can't find ConfigurationFile.ini for SQL Server 2012 Express
Hello,
I installed SQL Server 2012 Express on my Windows 8.1 Pro laptop with an instance name of SqlExpress. However, when I try to find the ConfigurationFile.ini, I can't find it. I searched all the sub-folders under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup
Bootstrap\Log\, but there is no such file. I need this file for future silent installation on many other computers. Can anybody help with this issue?
Thanks,
JayFor SQL Server Express edition you need to try with below parameters at the time of installation:
UIMODE=Normal
ACTION=Install

Conversion from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 Express
Looking to move a small database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 Express - can a 2005 backup file be restored to a newly created 2012 Express database file?
Are you using 2005 express? Yes, you can do that
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms177429.aspx
Note that if you restore a SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server 2012, the database is automatically
upgraded.
Also you
cannot
do a cross
edition restore i.e. from enterprise edition (2005) backup to 2012 express

DHCP Mirgation from 2008 to 2012
Hi,
I am migrating DHCP server 2008 to 2012
Environment. Please let me know the Best practice of migration.
I have configured DHCP failover in Windows 2008 R2
Environment.
Any help would be very grateful.
Thankx & Regards,
DD6Hi,
This type of question is already running in technet portal.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fed16caa-fb53-4037-a578-5f8dfc61e4e3/dhcp-failover-migrate-dhcp-server-to-another-machine?forum=winservergen
Process of Migration DHCP Server 2008R2 to Windows 2012
• Firstly, you can disable the DHCP role in Windows Server 2008 R2. However, if the Windows Server 2012 is down, the clients cannot renew their IP lease duration and obtain IP address.
Therefore, it is recommended to leave the DHCP role in Windows Server 2008 R2 and deploy high availability. Windows Server 2012 brings the new feature: DHCP failover. However it requires both DHCP Servers are Windows Server 2012. Consider another Server
is Windows Server 2008 R2, we have to choose one of the following:
>> DHCP in a Windows failover cluster. This option places the DHCP server in a cluster with an additional server configured with the DHCP service that assumes the load if the primary DHCP server fails. The clustering deployment option uses a single
shared storage. This makes the storage a single point of failure, and requires additional investment in redundancy for storage. In addition, clustering involves relatively complex setup and maintenance.
>> Split scope DHCP. Split scope DHCP uses two independent DHCP servers that share responsibility for a scope. Typically 70% of the addresses in the scope are assigned to the primary server and the remaining 30% are assigned to the backup server.
If clients cannot reach the primary server then they can get an IP configuration from the secondary server. Split scope deployment does not provide IP address continuity and is unusable in scenarios where the scope is already running at high utilization of
address space, which is very common with Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4).

SQL Server 2012 Express Edition SP1 Limitations
Our software company is working on many project where are used several versions of SQL Server (2005, 2008, 2008R2, 2012).
Our ICT department applies a procedure that involves the installation of a developer version of the product (each product version) on each of the computer engineers.
One of our colleagues in the developer team tells me to install SQL Server Express Edition SP1 as it would be able to replace all previous developer versions.
He also told me that SQL Server Express Edition SP1 has now the same functions as the developer version.
All this sounds strange to me, and before upgrading all computers to all developers would like to find confirmation from the guidelines supplied by my colleague.
I did a quick search but can not find clear information on SP1 if not this
link which shows that the express version has obvious limitations compared to other versions.
Anyone knows where I could find more detailed information about the limitations of SP1 and a clear comparison with the developer version?
Any help would be awesome.
Luca>He also told me that SQL Server Express Edition SP1 has now the same functions as the developer version.
That is FALSE.
Developer has the same features as the Enterprise (ALL THE FEATURES) but cannot be used for production.
Express is a limited SS version.

SQL SERVER 2012 EXPRESS EDITION
Good Day;
May I know if sql server 2012 express edition is compatible with visual basic 2008 express edition? thank you!Hello,
Compatible in which way? There is no direct relation between Visual Studio and SQL Server, from .NET you can connect to any Version of SQL Server.

When I use framing in SQL Server 2012 express, error occurred
Hello, everyone,
I met a error when I use framing in the SQL Server 2012 Express. Could you help me, thank you!
the query is:
SELECT custid, orderid, orderdate, val,
SUM(val) OVER(PARTITION BY custid
ORDER BY orderdate, orderid
ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING
AND CURRENT ROW) AS runningtotal
FROM Sales.OrderValues;
And the error information is:
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 4
Incorrect syntax near 'ROWS'.
Thank you!Hello,
If you run that statement on SQL Server 2012 (or later), you won’t receive any errors.
I receive that error message only when I run that statement on SQL Server 2008.
I didn't try with SQL Server 2012 Express though. I tested with a SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition instance with SP1 CU2, and your statement works.
Hope this helps.

Alberto Morillo

Migrate WSUS/MS Internal database from 2005 express to 2012 express
We are using WSUS 3 SP1 on a 2008r2 server and 2005 SQL Express to host the internal database. Is there anything I need to do to upgrade this to 2012 SQL Express? We have an application which is requiring 2012 Express as a minimum and would like everything
under one package with separate database instances.Hi
As Alberto’s post, it's not supported to run a Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) database on SQL Server 2012 in Server 2008 R2. Since your application requires SQL Server 2012 Express as a minimum, you can try the following method:
1. WSUS in Server 2012 supports SQL Server 2012, if you want to upgrade WSUS database supports SQL Server 2012, you need to upgrade WSUS 3.0 SP1, operation system and so on. For more information, you can post the question about WSUS in the
Windows Server forums. It is appropriate and more experts will assist you. In addition, upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2012, as Shanky’s post, you need to make sure that your SQL Server 2005 has been applied Service Pack 4.
2. However, if you don’t want to upgrade WSUS database from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2012, I recommend you to install a new instance of SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2.
In addition, before installing SQL Server 2012 or upgrading to SQL Server 2012, your system should meets the following prerequisites:
• The Windows Installer service must be running.
• Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 4.0 are required.
• Windows PowerShell 2.0 or later is required if you're upgrading the database engine.
For more information about the prerequisites for installing SQL Server 2012, please review the following link:
