2008 Unibody Macbook with 2560 x 1440 external display ?

Hello to all,
This is my first post here but I have used many times the forum to find out usefull information. I am considering buying an external display for my Macbook, but I am hesitating for two reasons:
I read on some page that there could be performance issues with using a high resolution on this rather "old" machine:
http://superuser.com/questions/265125/27-apple-cinema-display-slows-my-macbook
I have upgraded my MB to 8 GB memory (and a 750 GB HDD but I doubt that makes a difference).
My MB model is this one:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-alumi num-13-late-2008-unibody-specs.html
I mostly use it for Web browsing / Office software / iPhoto / movie watching
So first question is: Can anybody confirm whether it will be OK to run my MB with a display of this resolution (similar to Apple Cinema Display), either with the laptop closed or opened?
Second "bonus" question: According to what I read here and there, it seems that I would need to use a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or a mDP to DVI-dual-link to ensure full resolution. I own a miniDP to HDMI cable (and HDMI to DVI converter), any chance that I can use it with full resolution ? I didn't find much user feedback on this point yet.
Many thanks for your answers !
Matthieu

Well, I went ahead and bought the display I wanted, so, yes, I can display 2560x1440, with this MB. It is a bit slow on some applicaitons but it may be due to the dual display, I bet if I use it in clamshell mode it should be OK for most applications.

Can I use remote disk on a 2008 unibody MacBook with no optical drive?

According to the link you came from the only MacBooks this works with are MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina display. If yours is not one of these I can see no harm in trying it.
You could consider getting an external optical drive.

• Mountain Lion on 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro?

I am currently running OSX Lion on a late 2008 unibody macbook pro that has been upgraded to 8GB of RAM.  It runs perfectly and I am a little woried that upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion might make things run slower or less smoothly.
Is anybody running Mountain Lion on a system similar to mine?  Is it slower?  Faster?  The same?
Thanks in advance,

Correct. You can partition the drive and create a separate volume that has about 300 GBs, then clone to this partition. Here's how it's done:
To resize the drive do the following:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

• 2008 Unibody MacBook dropping WiFi

I posted this on MacRumors but no one was able to help me so I was wondering if the wonderful Apple community could help.
Hey Guys,
I have a 2008 unibody MacBook running OSX 10.8.3 that has a bit of a strange issue with the wireless.
I have recently acquired a Meraki MR12 Wireless Access Point and 3 year cloud controller license. This has replaced my Airport Extreme as my main access point purely for the stats and information that you can get from the cloud controller.
Since the change I have been having some issues with my network where the wireless icon shows that you are connected to the network and you can ping some key IP addressed
192.168.1.1 - Firewall / Gateway
192.168.1.2 - Airport Extreme (Time Machine only)
8.8.8.8 - Google DNS
This is telling me there is some connectivity, but if you try to do anything on the network that requires application traffic nothing gets through. For example loading a web page in Chrome or Safari fails, dropbox looses its √ from the icon(lost connectivity) and time machine cannot find the disk (although you can ping the airport)
If you turn the wireless on and off again then you get your connectivity back for a while sometimes it can be 10 mins others its 3 hours before the drops.I have seen on some forums that you have to force your WAP to use WPA2-PSK rather than WPA and WPA2 as this can confuse the clients.
This is a summary as to how I have my SSIDs setup

I have setup a secondary SSID for testing as it is not affecting my flatmates laptop and have managed to find the optimal settings are no encryption with Meraki RADIUS authentication. Obviously this is not ideal so to add a little level of security I have hidden the test SSID.
I have tried everything to try and get my mac working on the main SSID
SMC & PRAM reset
New Network profile
reset network settings to factory defaults
I have made a quick youtube video to demonstrate the issue, I hope I have blanked out any details that anyone could use to take advantage of my network.

This is the interface configuration for the ASA I have omitd alot of the conf file as it is either irrelivent or provides to much information.
The AP is plugged into eth 0/7 and the Airport in 0/1 No other client is affected but they are all non osx (iPhone, Win 7, Ubuntu, openWRT.)

Ok so I have been doing some more reading and have spotted loads of posts on the apple discussions and on here that are showing similar issues but on SL rather than Mountain Lion.
I have gone through most of the troubleshooting steps they have outlined in there and none of it has worked.
First was to try and telnet to Google.com to see if it is just chrome or the whole OS that is not working.
This failed as expected

I haven't checked with the airport utility to generate a fault report. But I did do another packat capture and I can see the AP has been spamming my macbook with ARP requests.
The only thing that I forgot to do while the wireless was broken was to run the wireless diagnostics.

• Can I replace my 250Gb SATA HD in my 2008 aluminum MacBook with a new SATA3 Solid State Drive?

I would like to replace my 250Gb SATA HD in my 2008 aluminum MacBook with a 500Gb SATA3 SSD. I want to do it because of the age and to increase capacity, access speed and reliability. Is SATA3 backwards compatible to SATA? Should I save some money and just stick to a regular SATA higher capacity HD and forget about a SSD?

I replaced the hard drive in my early 2009 model with a Samsung 840 ssd. My book has the same sata interface as yours and accepted the newer drive without a hitch. It's the best $160 I've ever spent on a computer upgrade. My macbook feels like a new machine. I would highly recommend it.

Need full model number and Intel HD version (4000, 4600?) and which port you are using. Generally HDMI output is capped at full HD; 1920 x 1080.

• Late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro + 6GB RAM + Snow Leopard = Kernel Panic

Hi,
I've been trying to install Snow Leopard on my 2.8Ghz MacbookPro unibody (late 2008) with 6GB of RAM (4GB+2GB module).
At first, I did an upgrade of my existing Leopard drive, and when booting back in 10.6, everything was crashing (could not open a single web browser but Safari, for instance), and I was getting kernel panics each 10 minutes.
Then, I erased my boot disk and tried a clean install - I was getting kernel panics when installing! After 5 tries, it finally installed, and then I couldn't get through the welcome wizard the first time it boots.
So I removed the 4GB RAM module, and re-installed a 2GB one, and then everything was fine, not a single problem.
Take into consideration that that 4GB ram module was working perfectly under 10.5.8 (even while using the computer under a lot of stress) and passed all the hardware test.
Has anyone been successful at running Snow Leopard 10.6 on a late 2008 Macbook Pro unibody and 6GB of RAM?

Wow, this is really interesting! I own a UniBody MacBook Aluminum 13" 2.4 GHz 5,1 (October 2008) and ordered a 4 GB RAM module from OWC to max out my system to 6 GB for virtual machine use. I'd just performed a clean install of Snow Leopard a couple of days ago and was excited about the new operating system along with that additional RAM. But guess what? When I inserted the new 4 GB stick I suffered a kernel panic within minutes! I tried moving the module around between the two slots and inserting it on its own without the additional 2 GB module and the same lockups occured every time!
Who ever would have thought this might be a problem with the new operating system rather than an incompatibility with the new module? OWC even agreed to refund my purchase but before I send the stick back I'll go ahead and install the original Leopard operating system and try again. Based on your experience I'm convinced the new stick will work and prefer more RAM than a newer operating system. Thanks to all of you for having posted this; I'd have never suspected an issue with Snow Leopard otherwise. In fact, I was hoping to be able to upgrade to 8 GB of RAM with 10.6. Turns out we may be better off with 10.5.8, at least for now!

• Macbook Pro Retina Fan Speed with 3 vs 2 external displays

Hello,
When I'm in my home office, I often use my MacBook Pro Retina in Clamshell Mode (in a BookArc) with external displays.
Originally, I used 2 external displays (2x 1920x1800), and the fan speed and temperature remained stable at the lowest end of the spectrum (around 2200rpm and 60°C). However, recently I decided to use all the ports available and plug in an extra monitor (1680x1050) for that extra screen real estate. I can tell you that having three external monitors really makes a difference to my productivity. However, just by adding this extra display, the fan speed boosts up to a minimum of 4500rpm and often goes up to around 6000rpm. The temperature is also high (I guess the fan speed is a symptom of this).
I understand that the extra pixels in the 3rd monitor could definately tax the GPU more. However, I am suprised that the fan speed and GPU temperatures go so high, especially as all I am doing is moving around on a Preview PDF file, just from adding the extra monitor (especially with it's modest resolution).
I guess my questions are:
Is this expected behaviour for the rMBP?
Is this going to damage my rMBP with extended use (say, a good 6-8 hours pretty much every day for the next few years)?
Thanks very much,
Richard

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
Thanks,
Richard

• MacBook not sending signal to external display - was working fine before.

hi guys, i have a unibody macbook and i've been hooking it up to my tv for almost 2 years now using the mini display port to hdmi adapter and hdmi to my television.
tonight the macbook randomly stopped sending signals to the tv. i tried two tvs with two different display adapters as well as a DVI monitor.
the displays are detected in osx but there is just no signal sending to it. anyone have any ideas? did my mini display port just die? i've tried several cables/adapters.

Hey,
I just experienced a similar problem as the original poster, except that I'm using a minidisplayport - DVI adapter and not HDMI. Been working fine on my external screen for 2 months now and suddenly the external says no signal?
Macbook still flashes a blue screen when plugging in the adapter but does not detect the external. Haven't ruled out that the adapter is busted yet, but worked fine earlier.
I tried resetting the PRAM without any change.
Any kind of software / hardware problems on the macbook?
Any thoughts?

• How do I get my Macbook Pro to detect an external display?

Hi there.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro today.
Everything about it is wonderful, except:  When I plug an external display into the Thunderbolt port using a Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, it doesn't send a signal to the external monitor.  The screen on my Macbook will go blue for a second, and then the windows freeze.  The mouse will be movable for a bit (up to a minute), but nothing is clickable.  Strangely, it seems as though it's functioning as if there were a second monitor (I can move the mouse off-screen as though it's going over to another display).  But then the spinning rainbow wheel starts and never stops.  If I unplug the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, the Macbook will snap back into professional mode and everything works again.
If I try to boot the computer up with the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter already pluged in, it simply won't boot up (I get a gray screen with an apple and nothing more).
I tried using gfxCardStatus set to "discreet only" and I still have this problem.  I tried to run a firmware update, but my comp seems to be entirely up-to-date already (just set it up today).
The monitor and adapter seem to be working fine, and function as an external display when pluged into the Mini-DVI port on my 2009 Macbook running Snow Leopard.
I guess my question is, what's causing this?  Is this an adapter problem?  Like, do I need a special adapter to use with a Thunderbolt port as opposed to the one I'm using which works when pluged into a Mini-DVI port?
Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 4 MB
      Memory: 8 GB

The only thing that I can suggest is trying a different adapter - such as this one from Monoprice.
I don't know if that's the root of your problem, though. Does the external monitor have DVI? You could get a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter from Monoprice - here - and give that a shot.

• MacBook Pro cannot connect to external display (projector) under Windows

Our office has got one of those lovely new 13" MacBook Pros and we cannot figure out why it cannot connect to either of our 2 projectors with Windows 7.
We have an older MBP with NVidia graphics that connects just fine under both OS X and Windows. And this machine connects fine under Snow Leopard.
There was a recent Thunderbolt chipset update and we applied that; on the Windows side the Intel driver has been updated but nothing happens. Have also zapped the PRAM to no effect.
To add another wrinkle: I just connected the MBP to my Cinema Display and the external display shows fine in both OS X and Windows--Windows didn't even require me to go to the control panel.
This leads me to two thoughts: either it is something with the Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor (hard to believe, though, since it works for OS X) or it is something to do with the native resolution of the projector (equally hard to believe, as changing through various settings in Windows NOTHING happens on the external projector--it doesn't blink, go back or anything.)
Any ideas?

I wish I could find the discussion, but I cannot.
There was a discussion about the Windows 7 driver for the Thunderbolt port.  The conclusion I believe was that it only outputs digital signals, not analog.
The other conclusions were:
A USB-VGA adapter adapter bypasses this limitation because the driver is in the adapter itself and works regardless of the OSX/Windows operating system in charge.
Run Windows under VM, where OSX is in charge and can create analog output through Thunderbolt
If only I could find that thread ...
