2009.08 official snapshots

Hey guys and girls.
We cannot post this on the mainpage (yet) but we don't want to hold you back, so we want to introduce you to the official 2009.08 images.
These images are the first fruits of our new arch-releng build environment on the sevenL server.
They are built from a current snapshot of core, which includes kernel 2.6.30.4-1, udev 141-5 and pacman 3.3.0-2.
Changes compared to 2009.02:
- more up-to-date software (see above)
- usage of new AIF installer, which brings:
  * better disk editor with support for dm_crypt and lvm setups
  * support for automated installations using config files (deprecates quickinst)
  * a framework to build your own installation procedures
  * better date/time setting with ntp support
  * refactored grub installation routines
  * usability improvements
- aufs instead of unionfs
- enhanced boot device detection on image start
- ftp images are renamed to netinstall to avoid confusion
- bugfixes (xfs freeze, mirror setting, clock correctness, network settings, ...)
- and much more...
detailed package list and additional snapshot information
As you can see, just like with 2009.02 there have been some huge changes.
We should be more settled now and hopefully it will be more straightforward to build snapshots in the future.
Time will tell ;-).
As usual, the images come in iso and img flavors, with grub and isolinux for people whose cd-rom drive doesn't work with grub
Due to all mentioned changes, the installation guide will get a bunch of changes in a few minutes
The new guide is for now only available in English but we'll add other versions when we receive translated versions.
We cannot update the download page yet, but most mirrors have these images and torrent files (with webseed support) in their iso directory.

I remember that the hardest part about archlinux was INSTALLING it when I installed the then currently available release exactly around an year back. It does its job but is seriously uncomfortable to use at the same time.
This is odd. I often think our installer is too userfriendly.  I mean once you have Arch installed, all configuration is done with config files, and all work by using tools on the commandline.
When you install, you are guided and have ncurses interfaces that hide stuff like pacman invocation, network setup etc.
I often think we should make the installer more minimal but I'm not sure yet how exactly I would implement it.
Its userfriendly if the user in question is an experienced linux user who is used to ncurses. But for those guys who are shifting to serious distros from toys like ubuntu, its a real pain in the rear sometimes.
Anyway, the hardest part in the installer IMO is partitioning.
The funny thing is that archlinux is otherwise really easy to use because everything is plain and simple and the default configuration files all have great inbuilt commented documentation. I found archlinux easier to use the first time I used it than CentOS 5.2 for example.
The only saving grace is the excellent inbuilt guide in the installer CD. I think it would be great if the installer also transfered this guide to a place like /var/doc or placed it in the /root folder by default after installation.

  • HP not honoring free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7

When I purchased my machine in February 09 with Vista home edition I was promised on the web site and by the sales clerk that I would receive a free upgrade to Windows 7. Now I am told that only machines purchased after June 09 will qualify. I am furious and will not settle for this. Does anyone else have this issue.

Look you might have understood them wrong or you're saying something that they didn't say. They might have told you that there is going to be a free upgrade program for Windows 7 closer to when Windows 7 launches and thought you could get it when you bought it or you just want to accuse HP that they said that you would have the W7 Upgrade for free so you can get the upgrade. You should have looked for an official confirmation from Microsoft for the free upgrade from vista to W7, http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/06/25/announcing-the-windows-7-upgrade-option-program-amp-windows-7-pricing-bring-on-ga.aspx This link was released on June 25, 2009 and officially says that the free upgrade program was going to start on June 26, 2009 and this is directly form the Windows Blog. You made a mistake of listening to people and not looking for the official Microsoft Announcement. Your out of luck. Microsoft did this with xp to vista when vista came out and it was around the same months as vista to W7, so you should have also looked for past free upgrade. On February, Windows 7 date hasn't even been announced and the beta was still in progress as posted here on February 2009 http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/01/23/general-availability-for-the-windows-7-beta-to-end.aspx   So this goes back to the top, you should have looked at past free upgrades like xp to vista to check how many months before they will start the free upgrade program.

  • Window 7 using LabVIEW Runtime 8.6

Has anyone tried RTE 8.6 run time engine on Windows 7 ?

LabVIEW 8.6 is not officially supported on Windows 7. It might work, it might not. That's assuming you can actually get it installed. Search the forum and you will see this issue has come up many times over the past few months.
LabVIEW 2009 is officially supported for Windows 7.

  • The strangest thing: My mac doesnt see ONLY Win7 cd

    Hi guys,
Check this out: I bought parallels 5 and Win 7 home edition, in order to put on my mac. Parallels installation was nice and smooth, i created virtual machine and insterted Win 7CD. (official)
And here came the strangest thing: my mac doesnt see it! I ejected the cd, and put in other cd (in this case Starcraft 2), and voila it works, the install image pops up and i see the cd in finder. I put in this very Win 7 cd in the other mac...and it works, finder sees it and i can access it.
However when I put it back in my macbook pro, it keeps spinning it and seems to think its blank, cause iDVD pops up after 2-3 minutes. Parallels 5 doesnt see it, Finder doesnt see it either. What could be the problem? Any ideas welcome
P.S. just tried this Win7 cd on G5 (OS 10.4.6): no problem, took it to the shop and tried it on the shop's MBP: no problem. Tried inserting other CD's in my MBP (as mentioned above they were Parallels, Starcraft2, and Snow Leopard): absolutely no problem. But when i insert this Win 7 CD in, my MBP doesnt recongize it. My brains are fried as I cannot think of one single possibility of what might cause this strangest issue. (tried another Win7 cd, same thing)
    Mac OS X 10.6.4/ Mac Book Pro 2.66 Intel Core DUo/ 4GB
this Mac was bought in October 2009 from official store

Actually, it's not that strange at all.
Apparently due to the type of media Microsoft burns the disks on, some drives just don't like it. I had to make a copy of a Windows 7 DVD on my Mac Pro because the drive in a PC refused to read it even though it had no scratches or damage and the drive would read every other disk fine. When making the copy of the disk in my Mac I found that the Apple-shipped SuperDrive would read the disk but my aftermarket DVD burner in the second drive bay would not.
So, your options are to image the drive on another computer and burn a copy, or track down a USB DVD drive and install it from that.
Parallels will install from an ISO so if you can image it on your G5 and then just copy it over the network it will work. You can also enable CD drive sharing somehow, but I've never done that before.
EDIT: I wanted to comment that all the drives I have encountered that would not read the disk were TSSTcorp drives.

    -Ryan

  • Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers: Please Consider One Last Update for the Road

The title of this new thread says it all ..... 3 years since the last offical Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Driver Package release ..... a virtual lifetime in computer science years.
I'm looking for advice on how to best lobby the technical folks at Lenovo (by phone or here on the Forums) for one last official Lenovo "Nvidia" video driver update for our T61 and T61p units.
Lenovo's most current "ancient" 2009 Nvidia driver packages (found here),
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001342
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003876
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003605
all leave quite a bit of 3D (and some 2D) performance laying out there on the table based on my own testing with current modern Nvidia reference drivers on a cloned test mule hard drive (and never once crashed with the newer Nvidia reference drivers under WinXP 32-bit or Win7 32 bit).
Most all the major 3D gaming benchmarks were nearly doubled, and most importantly, my real world qualitative performance experience seemed even greater than the nearly doubled quantitative benchmark results.
I'm wondering if starting this new thread would be of any benefit to encourage the good folks at Lenovo to consider one last update after 3+ years?
Before I go to the trouble of posting my results, it is my hope that Lenovo could simply try the latest Nvidia reference drivers for themselves, tweak them (if even necessary) and then issue one last offical T61/T61p Nivida driver package update for the road .... hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of T61/T61p w/Nvidia GPU units are still in reliable daily service.
    http://www.geforce.com/drivers
    Something to please consider.
Two (I used to have Five) - T61p 15.4" WS T9300 2.5Ghz units, August 08/08 Builds with FX570M Nvidia Graphics; ... One W520 i7-2860QM w/2000M Nvidia Graphics (most recent acquisition and stupidly fast); .... One - T42 4:3 15" Flexview 1.8GHz with ATI Graphics (still perfect for traveling); ... Two - T500 15.4" units both with ATI HD3650 Graphics.

    Hi eecon
It is considered fortunate that Lenovo provides newer driver for newer OS even after the system was phased out. From what I know, most of the OEM / manufacturers do not provide drivers for newer version of Windows when the product is phased out.
Furthermore, graphic card vendors (e.g. NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, etc.) oftenly release new drivers and it is hard for manufacturers to catch up with them. Usually, the purpose of OEM providing new driver is to resolve existing issues. If you need performance, get newer drivers directly from vendors website.
    Have a nice day!

i bought iphone 3gs in sept. 2009 (two year back) without contract from USA. Can it be unlocked official by apple now.

AT&T is NOT giving iPhone 4 unlocked. They are only thru the Apple store and Apple.com. You would need to contact AT&T to ask them but NO ONE have been able to get the iphone unlocked by AT&T. But from this article from AT&T: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=61097&cv=820#fbid=dUnNnwJXkRI
What is the unlock code for my iPhone?
iPhone cannot be unlocked, even if you are out of contract. If you are traveling internationally, iPhone is a quad-band phone and will work in many countries across the globe. • My mid-2009 MacBook Pro's hard drive is near death. I want to install a new SSD and work from scratch. Please help.

Recently, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro has been crashing when I close the screen ("it's having a problem recognizing when the screen is closed/open and deciding what to do, error overload etc.").  It wasn't an SMC issue so I took it to an Apple Store, ran some tests, and decided my hard-drive is failing.
Not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on some "official apple hard-drive," I want to install a new 256GB SSD instead.  Hoping to squeeze as much life out of this computer as possible (in January I upgraded from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB), I would like to try and start from scratch, i.e. back-up important folders, music, photos etc. and only take that to the new hard-drive.  If someone could explain all the steps I need to take to safely complete this task (or point me in the direction of a guide) I'd appreciate it.
    Potentially Important info:
         Model:                mid-2009 13'' MacBook Pro
Processor:          2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
         Memory:             4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
         Software:            OS X 10.8.4
    Some additional questions I have...
Should I be concerned with making a fully bootable back-up (not sure what that is called) as well?  If so, what program should I use to create it?
How much more life should I try and push out of this computer?  I'm an engineering student and really only use it for web-surfing, music, and
word-processing.  The batter was replaced in March, the RAM was upgraded to 8 GB in January.  When the battery was swapped, the trackpad went           nuts so that's new too.  Only other issues are a slightly loose audio jack and the left side of the screen being slightly wobbly (hinge is worn I'm told).

Well there is no "official Apple HD / SSD" in any regard, no worries there.
If as you say youre only using same for surfing and word processing, why the need for a SSD? You would not notice any speed diff. in use on either of those,....in boot times yes, but in word or surfing, not.
You can push it likely a few more years, for mere surfing and word processing,...many many years.   Up TO the point that any major fixes become unrealistic relative to getting a new(ER) machine.
Concerned with a boot clone?  yes and no.  Its an ideal immediate recovery, since you cannot boot from Time Machine, ....in case of HD crash, recovery takes seconds from boot, or 20 mins or so from removing old and installing a clone. All the prosumers and pros have at least one updated clone of their prime machines.
You can do a "fresh install" if you choose, however if your current drive is FINE, why not merely clone it and save yourself some headache?...., but that is your prerogative of course.    Ideally 2 drives, one to backup your data (you need that regardless of installing a new drive for sake of a backup/archive,...ideally 2 actually, not merely one).
You could clone internal to NEW SSD/HD , ...then offload unnecessary files to an external to free up space and clutter and run off the clone, and this would only take a couple hours......the clone itself takes approx. 40+ mins.
    CLONE Apps :
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

  • How do you switch between web server snapshot jpg and png modes?

I read in another forum a posting by "NathanK" stating:
"The snapshot feature of the web server can
generate images either as png or jpg. In LabVIEW 8.6 and later, the
default which is generated by the web publishing tool is the png
format. In this mode everything happens in memory so there is no
    snapshot image file generated.
In the jpg mode there is a
temporary file, however it is not always the same file and the file is
deleted after it is uploaded to the client. I would not recommend
    trying to use this programmatically.
    If you need more
control over a snapshot of a front panel (and you are using 8.6), I
would recommend making a custom web service that takes a picture of a
VI's front panel and returns it to the client. Then you would have
    control over the image."
I am currently using the web publishing tool snapshot feature with an EXE program written in LV8.6.  However, each time a browser accesses the html file, the EXE file's memory grows by 72KB (this happens with my custom EXE program and with LabVIEW.exe when running the VI in development mode).  I'm assuming this is the png that is generated each time a snapshot is taken, but the program never de-allocated the memory and the program eventually crashes.  I'm aslo assuming that if I switch to "JPG mode", the web server will generate a temporary file and eventually delete it, elminating the memory leak.  The problem is, I don't know how to change the modes from png (default) to jpg.

I am and have been using the .snap function on many applications since LabVIEW 6.1.  It's very simple, easy to use, does exactly what I want it to do, and is still in the documentation of LabVIEW 8.6, 2009 and 2009 SP1 as being supported.
If I am not mistaken, don't you need to have the LabVIEW runtime engine on the target system to use embedded mode?  I don't want to have to try and keep everybody who wants to see a screenshot of my program to have to have a run-time engine installed.  For one reason, I don't know everybody who wants to monitor our system and they literally can be anywhere in the world if the VPN to our network.  Second, those who I do know would would have me install it for them.  Third, why go "backwards" in capability...everybody would ask me "Why do we have to do this now?..we never had to do it before", and I don't want to use my time/energy at work to explain why NI cannot fix a memory leak that has been identified in at least the last 3 versions of LabVIEW and is still not fixed.
I had been using either LV 6.1 or 7.1 for a good part of 10 years and had very few problems with them (BTW, DAQmx is the greatest thing every put on a computer EVER).  I finally make the transitioin and start using LV 8.6 on a major test platform last year, got to the very end of it and find this out.  <sigh!>
It is funny (maybe not), but my work around feels like I just changed the floormats in my Toyota car to keep it from "crashing".
However, if I am mistaken and you do NOT need to use LV runtime engine for embedded mode, ignore everything I wrote above and please let me know that this is the case and I will look into it.

  • I have a MBP from late 2009.  It works fine in all regards except recently, when an icon is grabbed by the built-in track pad, I can't drop the item and have to shut my computer down to resolve the issue.  How do I reinstall the driver for the trackpad?

Ok, I thought the subject line was the extent of what I could type.  My trackpad has been working fine for over two years now.  But recently if I accidently (or intentionally) drag a picutre that is highlighted on any website, the cursur never lets go of the image and all "clicking" capabilities become useless.  It even manages to lock up the rest of the computer, such that trying to restart manually doesn't work.  I litterally have to hold the power button till the MBP turns off and reboot.  I have looked for a way to unistall and reinstall the driving, but I'm either redirected to a non-Apple website or else I'm directed to the new "Retina" MBP section of the Apple store.  I don't have any other mouse that is connected to this computer, so there shouldn't be any weird interference between mutiple mice.
Is there an official applie support section where I can either download the proper driver to simply resinstall the orignal 2009-2010 MBP trackpad driver, or a way for the "Software Update" under the Apple logo in the top file bar to acknowledge this problem an automatically patch it?  I'd rather not have to go into an Apple store just to get this quirk (which doesn't happen 100% of the time anyways) figured out.  I simply don't want it to occur while I'm in the middle of a larger project and then get stuck being unable to save a document and I have to forcefully restart my entire computer (nuisance aside).
    Thank you,
    Hamilton

    Many Thanks, Kurt.
I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!
I shall save it somewhere VERY safe now in case this happens again …
You have made an old man very happy and saved me from worrying that senile decay had suddenly set in. (I was 70 last week so you might understand the situation from that.)

  • Connect MacBook mid-2009 to TV via S-Video

Previously, I had a Mac Mini 1.66 GHz Core Duo connected to my TV via a DVI-to-video adapter, which has an S-Video output:
    http://store.apple.com/nl/product/M9267G/A
I've sold the Mac Mini and bought a MacBook white, mid-2009. Wanting to connect the MacBook in the same way, I've bought a mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter. However, the DVI-to-video adapter has a couple of pins extra, which make it impossible to connect to the mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter.
How can I connect my MacBook white to my TV, which has a S-Video input?

    Silent.

  • Can't install a stable Windows 7 on my Snow Leopard mid-2009 Macbook Pro via Botcamp

I just erased the whole disk with Disk Utility and re-installed a fresh version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro with my original install disk and updated all the software.
I then created a 400GB partition via Bootcamp Assistant for Windows and successfully installed Vista.
I then successfully installed Windows 7 (not an upgrade) over Vista (I only have the official upgrade disk) and installed Bootcamp in Windows with the original OS X DVD.
I then upgraded Bootcamp from version 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2 to 3.3 and then to 4.0.
None of these versions have resulted in a stable version of Windows 7 because the screen randomly turns one color (usually blue or white) with no cursor or interaction possible and I have to shut the computer down by holding the power button.
I've tried the whole process with 32 bit and 64 bit versions with the same results.  The funny thing (not so funny, really) is that WIndows becomes increasingly unstable the higher I go with Bootcamp.  I've even tried running the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade utility but Windows 7 is totally unusable.  Once at Bootcamp 4 the system can't even get past the windows boot process.
I'm pulling my hair out here because I can't think of anything else to try.  I'm suspecting the problem is driver related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest you start over with the install of Windows. You can use an Upgrade version of Win 7 to do a Clean install.
Basically you have to Not put in the license key when asked and also uncheck the option to Auto Activate Windows when the system gets online, mThen once it is installed and you are at the desktop go to the System applet in Control panel and Select Activate Windows. Then put the license key in.
If for some reason that doesn't work then you do a second install of Windows7 over the top of the current install and that make the installer think you are Upgrading and the Activation will go through.
It is all covered over at the Windows 7 forum.

  • Mac Pro 2009 Processor Upgrade Possibility?

I've searched and can not seem to find a straight answer.  I have a 2009 Mac Pro with the single 2.66 quad-core processor.  Since these Pro's use the daughter board (or whatever it's called) with the processor and RAM on them, can I just swap out that board with one from an official 2009 Mac Pro that has a dual 2.26 quad core processors effectively turning it into a 8-core machine?  I'm not talking about tearing it down and swapping the actual processor, just pull the entire board out of a single proc machine and swap it with one from the same model year but with the dual proc machine.  Anybody know if that would work?

Why would I consider selling and rebuying if the ENTIRE processor board with RAM and heat syncs and everything on it would simply plugin and work and I'd automatically have a dual processor setup?  I'm still not sure anyone is fully understanding what I'm asking.  Grant is the closest but I'm afraid of just trying it because I don't want to fry anything or break anything.  If I knew it would simply work or not work, I'd just try it, but I don't want to ruin anything by trying.  It's starting to sound like no one has ever tried this before.  To me it seems like such a simple way to upgrade if it actually works.  There would be no major disassembly, no processor swaps, no firmware upgrades, just a simple plug and play, but it sounds like no one can give me a straight answer.  I'm just shocked no one has tried this.  Anybody?  Anybody swap the entire single-proc board for the dual-proc board?
Maybe pictures will help.  Has anybody taken this out of their mac -
And then stuck this is and powered their machine up?

  • Problem Converting standby database from snapshot to physical

Any help willl be greatly appreciated...
I am trying to convert a standby database that is in "snapshot" mode back to "physical" standby and I am encountering problems in the process from the "DGMGRL" command line.
Both instances are on the same physical machine. Everything was working fine untill I tried to change the db from snapshot to physical. The DGMGRL starts the conversion process and is able to shutdown but when trying to restart the instance is fails and reports that the service is not defined.
Here is the issue I am facing:

    Thanks for the response.
So, here is the status now....with a little background...
After my original post, I started to read the manuals and I found the sql command to convert the database back from snapshot to physical standby (sb).
That worked fine and I had my snapshot sb back to physical sb.
So when you posted the suggestion, I already had my db in physical sb mode. I said no problem, I will convert it back to snapshot and then back again using dgmgrl instead of sql+
Well here is how my listener is configured now.
    SID_LIST_I11G1 =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1.MHOST)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
    (SID_NAME = I11G1)
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1SB.MHOST)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
    (SID_NAME = I11G1SB)
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1SB_DGMGRL)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
    (SID_NAME = I11G1SB)
Then using dgmgrl I tried to change the db from p-sb to s-sb and the results are not good....

Not sure if the following (notice the typo in the service name) in the parameter (log_archive_dest_2) definition on the standby d/b has anything to do with this. I did not get this error when I initially converted to s-sb.
also I checked all my session notes, I did not type the command to set this parameter on the standby d/b and so it was not a typo on my part. However, it seems to have come from the rman script supplied with the obe. This script is supposed to clone the primary d/b to a standby db and in the process replace the string /i11g1/ with /i11g1sb/.

I am tempted to start all over again, but I'd rather use this opportunity to debug this issue (as a learning exercise). I can always start from scratch. That brings up another Q: What do I need to do to blow away all traces of the stand by database (including all the archive logs etc...) keeping my primary intact. I'd also like to blow away all snapshot and archive logs for the primary as well.
