2009 17" MBP dies

unplugging USB and power cables and 2009 17" MBP dies, as if power were entirely cut, have to reboot. also seems to do this randomly when waking from sleep - won't wake up, has to reboot
17" 2009 MBP running Yosemite, all software up to date

"battery is only 3.2 years old, taking 8171 mAh"
I just removed one that was only slightly older than that and showed good in System Prefs. It would cause no wake from sleep and a no charging condition. I could test this because I have 3 batteries of this type.
"makes me wonder if there is some connection in the upper left corner, something I'm jiggling when I unplug?"
Possible, that would be the DC in board. A close inspection of that board might reveal something.
Have you reset SMC? Seems obvious and you've probably already done that.

  • No boot condition after upgrade to 10.8.3, EFI 1.6, Mid-2009 15" MBP 2.53Ghz

    Hi,
    I've got a Mid-2009 15" MBP. After I upgraded to 10.8.3, my computer got into a situation where, upon waking from sleep, it became unresponsive, and then gave me the "no entry" sign after I hard-rebooted it.
    I took the drive out, put it in an external enclosure, found that it booted via USB. I then put the drive back in the computer and to my surprise, it booted and worked properly -- for about a week, at which time the problem recurred.
    Some more detail: a while back I upgraded the HDD to a Seagate Momentus 7200 750GB, model ST9750420AS. I encountered poor performance, spinning beach balls, refusal to wake from hibernate, etc. I came upon the EFI 1.6 monster thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2054387) and downgraded my EFI to 1.6 and kept it there. Everything worked great for more than a year, until the 10.8.3 update and no boot.
    It looks like some people who downgraded to 1.6 are having issues with 10.8.3 as well, but with an HDD/SSD in the optical drive (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4895074). I can confirm I'm having issues with it when the optical drive is intact and I'm using a SATA HDD in the HDD bay. This is a supported configuration (my owner's manual even has instructions for upgrading the HDD).
    The second time it happened I tried what the folks in the second thread above did and downgraded to 10.8.0, then upgraded to 10.8.2. I can say that at this time it seems to be working. So my questions are:
    1) Is 10.8.2 the last Lion update this MBP will ever be able to install?
    2) Has anyone who was previously running EFI 1.6 / 10.8.2 had this issue and had success with the 10.8.3 / EFI 1.7 combination (upgrading both at the same time)?
    3) Has Apple or anyone else found a definitive list of HDD/SSDs that work reliably with this rather finicky logic board/disk controller?
    4) Anyone else running EFI 1.6 / 10.8.3 having a similar experience? Should I be worried about the longevity/integrity of my hardware at this point?
    Thanks. Please chime in especially if you have a similar configuration/experience.
    Alex

    Try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Mid 2009 13" MBP iSight camera bad picture quality in photo booth

    My daughter's stock mid 2009 13" MBP 2.26 ghz intel core two duo has a problem with the isight camera. The isight camera is built in to the screen. The isight camera works some of the time flawlessly and other times it comes out real grainy and with small colored pixels all over the screen like colored static (about 20% to 30% of the photo booth screen is affected but the rest of the screen outside of the photo booth app is unaffected). She only uses it in photo booth but we've tried the iChat app and the same thing happens there too, once she couldn't get the MBP to connect to the isight camera (it just showed a black photo booth screen), so she closed the lid of her MBP and reopened it and it worked. All of the software and firmware is up to date and we've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, it didn't do anything to fix the problem. It seems like there's a wire loose in the computer from the screen to the computer base, only because I can move the screen back and forth and the picture quality changes, the amount of static on the picture will move, go away or get worse. I had the screen changed in early 2010 (January or February) (the MBP was about 5 or 6 months old then) at the apple store under warranty due to dirt under the screen's glass (manufacturing defect). The photo booth picture static problem comes and goes, but here lately it comes more than it goes. The screen in general is in good shape and doesn't have any detectable problems with it, it has a good picture and no dead pixels, the problem seems to be only isolated to the isight camera. Can some one help with this problem? How long of a warranty is given on the warranty repairs (like the screen change they did in early 2010)? If apple does a repair on it and finds a wire that has rubbed the insulation off of it on a hinge causing a short and the isight problem, as a result of a sloppy repair from the first warranty repair, will they cover it under warranty again even if it's been over a year since they changed the screen? Also how honest will apple be if they do find out it is a problem caused from the first screen replacement, will they own up to their mistake? If I don't agree with apple's repair decision, can I get a second opinion from an outside source, third party, and if it's diagnosis different than apple's and can be proven, can I still get apple to do and pay for the repairs and labor if it turns out to be their fault from the first warranty screen replacement?
    The reason why I'm asking is, I took my wife's white macbook in about a year ago for the famous cracked top cover replacement (under warranty) and when I got the computer back, the isight camera didn't work, so I gave it back, they took it apart a look at it and said there was nothing wrong with it and gave it back, then the screen wouldn't come on so after 4 hours at the Apple store they decided to send it to Austin, TX. for repairs (I'm in Ft. Worth TX.). Apple in Austin said it needed a new main board. They said the old one had water damage to it. We never had water anywhere near the computer, not even in the same room. It was working fine when we took it in, we took it in just to get the plastic top case, that cracks all of the time, replaced under warranty. And then they wanted us to pay for an $800 main board because some how while they were doing the top cover replacement it got water damaged. I argued with them and they finally gave me a one-time offer of them paying for half of the repair and labor or if I disagreed or left the store I would have to pay the whole amount if I chose to have the repairs done. So I ended up having to pay $467 for a year old macbook main board that was water damaged in their possession during their repairs. I like Apple and their products but I am worried about giving my daughter's MBP over to them for repairs because of this incident, it's an honesty issue with how honest they will be with what they find because they won't give back the old parts for analysis by a third party to verify their diagnosis.
    Thanks for any info and advice anyone can give.

    Hi,
    As a personal note I find long posts like this hard to read if they are not broken up in to paragraphs.
    As I say it is  a personal thing.
    I can give you some information about the camera and laptops over the past few years.
    Basically in early Laptops of the MacBook Pro and MacBook range the cable did tend to fray at the point where it passed through the hinge.  It did take a well used laptop that had the lid open and closed frequently to cause this.  (your 2009 model might just be in that group - I have no firm dates or models I am afraid)
    Later models have this rerouted so that this does not happen.
    However the cable has then tended to get pulled from the camera end and become loose.
    This On Line Self fix site has pages about some models  (The one I have linked to may not be yours)
    I have linked in to later pictures in the sequence but there are navigation points to work back to the start.
    Note:- they use pretty specifc specialest tools as well in these pics.
    Doing this would certail Void any Warranty you have left.
    From Posts mainly in the iChat and the iSight areas I have gathered that it seems common for Apple to replace the Screen as a whole rather than fiddle with getting solely at the camera.
    Apple has this article on Trouble Shooting an iSight
    Basically it says try several apps then try logging in on another Mac User account to see if it is App based or User based or in fact System wide.
    If System wide then resetting the SMC/PMU is the only suggested fix.  (Which I did read you had done)
    In addition to that I would add that testing should be done in different lighting conditions.
    Lighting in the evening or dark that is good enough to read buy is not always good enough for the camera or is not illuminating the right areas.
    Some people have reported that Starting the computer in Safe Mode (then Rebooting afterwards) seems to help.  (it clears out some caches and starts up with reduced extensions)
    As to actual Repairs and any Warranty that may still be in place I cannot say.
    I can say that when people post about problems with repairs a certain stores someone else will tend to post that their experience was different.
    You seem to report two different experiences with the two computers yourself.

    After some months of use my MBP died outside USA. I got it checked in Apple verfied Service centre and was told that logic board was faulty.
    After I came back to US I took my MBP to Apple store and was told that there is liquid damage in the system. My question is that if there was liquid damage why did my MBP stop displaying the battery status right after  the battery was changed secondly why didnt the apple verified Service centre tell me that there was liquid damage afterall I paid them the money for diagnosing the problem.
    Is there a process i can followup on this problem

    These are question you would need to ask that service center.

  • MBP dies while updating - can't reinstall

    After rebooting to finish the install for 10.4.7, all I got was a blue screen that stuck there. I could boot single user and lauch Finder as root from the console, but I couldn't boot it normally or log in normally. I tried just about everything under the sun, including all of the stuff from the Apple Support pages.
    So, I gave up and decided to reinstall. I hit "Archive & Install" because I can't lose the data on it (yes, I have backups, but the more recent the better). It went through that, and then rebooted to install the stuff from Disc 2. While running the postflight script for iDVD, it just dies with "postflight[xxx]: no matching processes found" in the log and just sits there, forever. I tried reinstalling several times.
    So I go back to the beginning and try to redo it all again. This time, it gets to running the install script for "Mac OS X" and sits there repeating "socket is not connected" in the log.
    I gave up and just tried an Erase & Install, and the same thing happens every time. I can't even reinstall. I'm out of ideas.
    MacBook Pro, 1.83 15" Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I am using the software that came with my MBP. I don't have any other. One of the first things I did was verify the disk with disk utility, and hardware test was okay. The 'verifying your installation media' part passes, and the 'verifying destination volume' part passes. I can see nothing physically wrong with the media, and I find it hard to believe the HDD suddenly failed right as I was installing 10.4.7.
    Not trying to shoot you down, just hoping that it's software (which makes sense so far) because I don't have access to an Apple Retail Store and I don't really want to have to deal with sending it to Texas.

  • MBP Dies on Startup

    So my 2006 MBP suddenly stopped working. It now gets to the startup screen with the Apple logo and spinning "cogwheel." I also see a mysterious thing below both of them that looks like an empty progress bar of some sort that I've never seen before. Sometimes it flashes on only once; sometimes its flashes several times before disappearing. But the system always dies immediately after. Not a click of shutting off, but just dying immediately like the battery was drained.
    A bit of background: The problem began yesterday. I left the room for about 30 mins., and when I came bac.k, the MBP was unplugged and the battery was completely drained. I tried turning it on and the problem began. It's possible that I left it on the armrest and that it slid about 6 inches down onto the soft couchThere is also a small rattling inside it now. What's going on and how do I fix it?
    Difficulty: I have no DVD/CD drive from which to boot from the install disc (long story), but I do have access to other MacBooks that I could boot it with. I've already tried a safe mode boot, holding down the power button without the adapter or the battery, resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, and starting it without the battery, but with the AC adapter plugged in. Thanks.

    I can't really think of a reason that the HD would be the problem, unless a "bruise" on it from years ago has caught up with it again and that it needs to be reformatted a second time.
    A brand new HD can die right out of the box; that, and anything short of it, can happen at any time, for no apparent reason. No "bruise" needed, new or old.
    I also have an external HD with some Time Machine backups on it. Is there any way that I can boot from that one? Should I just reformat and go from my last backup (a few weeks old, but nothing too essential).
    Yes, I would try that. Before that, however, check the SMART status of the HD in Disk Utility.
    Is there a way to save everything that would be less complicated than using Target Disk Mode again, backing it all up to my external drive by plugging it into the second computer's USB port, and then sending it over?
    It's possible DiskWarrior, TechToolPro, DriveGenius or a similar utility could repair it if the issue is software/directory related. If the HD is actually dying, no utility can save it. This may be the "easiest" way, but also the most expensive. Formatting and starting over will probably be more time consuming/"difficult," but won't cost you anything (unless the HD itself is dying/dead, in which case neither method will work for more than a short time, if even that; the HD will need to be replaced, which is actually cheaper than DW).

  • Early 2009 17" MBP doesn't see new SuperTalent SSD

    Just installed the SuperTalent MasterDrive RX 512 GB SSD in my early 2009 MBP 17". I was originally worried about the drive fitting in the machine since it is 12.mm tall, but that was not a problem. It fits snugly but it does fit.
    My problem is that the machine doesn't see the drive. I have taken it out and put it in an external USB enclosure and was able to create a GUID partition map and mac os extendend journaled partition. Then put it back in the MBP to see if that helped. No luck, the disk utility still can not see it but the System Profiler does identify it in the SATA area.
    Here is some info about my MBP from system profiler if it helps anyone: Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP52.008E.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.42f4
    Anybody out there able to get this SuperTalent drive to work in a similar MacBook Pro?
    Thanks in advance,

    OK, I think I have figured this out. It is an odd process but it does get me to where I want to be. I ran acorss another forum post where someone had the same issue with a different SSD. They said that their problem was resolved by installing OSX on the SSD while it was connected via USB. I didn't think the setup DVD would install the OS to an externally connected drive but it did. So, I installed the SSD back inside my MBP and it booted into it just fine. At this point I'm feeling pretty good because the machine is running on the internal SSD. My next step was to boot to the setup DVD again and restore from my Time Machine backup to the SSD. This didn't work either. Amazingly enough, even when you can boot the machine and run on the SSD, the disk utility and restore utility still can't see it.
    Next step was to take the disk out of the MBP again, put it back in a USB enclosure, boot to the setup DVD (no hard drive or SSD in the machine at this point) and then restore from time machine disk to USB connected SSD.
    This is in process now and will take a while. My Time Mahchine image is about 330 gigs and is having to cross two USB connections. Current time remainig for the restore is showing about 13 hours. So I will check on it in tomorrow and then put the SSD back in the MBP and fire it up.
    I think this will be OK... (Fingers crossed)
    Will post another update tomorrow with the results.

  • MBP dies when I unplug power cord

    Anyone have any ideas? The battery wasn't in the best shape, it had "check battery" for about a year now.
    Of course, Apple refused to do anything for me, as it's out of warranty. Until last week I was getting maybe an hour out of it. But ever since upgrading to 10.5.7 last week, as soon as I disconnect the power-cord, 1 sec later, the laptop just dies, requiring a reboot.
    Tried resetting PRAM and the PMU/SMC. Reinstalled 10.5.7.

    Why did you wait so long for help?
    Try the following:
    HD/System/Library/SystemConfiguration & look for a file called batteryupdater.bundle. Select Get Info for the file.
    If its version number is 1.2 or 1.3 you should be fine If not, or if you cannot locate a batteryupdater.bundle file (by using Spotlight, searching manually or using a 3rd party search feature) then download an update from Apple's website & install it. *If installing has no effect, you probably need a new battery.*
    Your battery may be replaced for free. Take your computer to an Apple Store. _The staff will be able to check to determine if your model MBP qualifies for the free battery program._

  • 2009 A1278 MBP 13" HDD not responsive

    Have I exhuasted all possibilities to determine cause ---Where to next?
    OS Mavericks, 320GB HDD, 8 GB RAM, New Battery - Upgraded 6-8 months ago!
    Reviewed forum material and performed the list below:
    MBP HDD not booting up - (apple logo w/ spinning gear and then prohibitive sign);
    Tried PRAM reset - Fail;
    Tried Safe Mode - Fail;
    Tried SMC reset - Fail;
    Tried Target mode - Selected HDD -  Fail;
    Removed HDD and Battery, re-sat them and retried 2 & 3 - Fail;
    Inserted Installation disk, ran disk Utility, HDD not detected only SuperDrive;
    Removed HDD and placed into Nexstar HDD Dock, reboot, select Target drive - PASS
    Re-inserted HDD back into MBP, repeat steps 2 & 3 - Fail;
    So, is it ribbon or logic board?
    Preference towards ribbon - Cheaper - there is forum content on it;
    Any test for logic board defects?
    Much appreciated guys!!!
    Thank you.

    My1stMac_RC,
    given your investigation, it reads as though the internal SATA cable is the culprit — it seems to be a problem in 2009 models.
    For future reference, since you have Mavericks installed, you could have also tried booting into Recovery mode.

  • Mid-2009 13" MBP says "not charging" but seems to be slowly charging with power adapter

    I have a mid-2009 13" Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM.  I have the odd situation of the power indicator on top right of screen showing that the power adapter is plugged in, but the percentage indicator stating that the laptop is "not charging."  I have been working on the computer for several hours and the laptop has only charged to about 27 percent according to the battery health application that is runningI have.  It says the battery has gone through 281 cycles and is 2.4 years old.  It suggests the battery should still charge to 92 percent of its potential.  The battery is warm as is the power adapter cube, so something is happening.  The little light on the end of the power cord is green but only two of the little green dots light up on the left edge of the computer.
    Any ideas if this is a battery, laptop, or power adapter problem?  Unfortunately, I don't have a second power adapter to test that idea.  Thanks for any suggestions.

    Recalling another similar thread, I can recommend you thoroughly clean the male and female MagSafe connectors. The gold pins and pads must be shiny bright and totally debris free. Use a Q-Tip moistened with alcohol, disconnect the power brick beforehand. Also, make sure the rubberized area around the connector in the Mac, where the magnet lies and the steel ring around the cable connector nestles, is completely free of anything that can prevent the two from fully mating and ensuring a tight grip. Here's more info, look at the pics on #7: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713  (click on the triangles to have them drop and show the pictures)

  • Can someone recommend a replacement hard drive for my June 2009 17"MBP?

    I need at least 750GB. My current HD is 500GB but I only have 90GB remaining as I have a lot of videos stored on the machine. Can someone recommend a HD that has at least 750GB of space and performs well with a 17"MBP?

    If you are expecting to copy commercial, theatrical DVDs to any hard drive, DVDs are copy protected and you will find that no computer will let you copy copy-protected commercial DVDs.
    If your movies are purchased downloads from other sources like iTunes or Ultraviolet digital copies, then you will be able to make a limited number of copies for backup and storage onto an external hard drive
    There are ways to overcome this issue, but we are not allowed to discuss anything about DVDs that can break that copy protection.
    So, no one in these forums will be able to help you with that issue.
    You will have to do your own Internet searches for your own solutions to this issue.

  • Why does my 27" LED Cinema Display only display maximum resolution of 1920x1200, when my Mid 2009 13" MBP says it supports up to 2560x1600?

    When I have my MBP connected to my 27" LED Cinema Display, my display settings only show a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, when the specs on both my MBP and Display say they they support up to 2560x1600?  Am I missing something?

    I finally decided to just take my MBP down to the Apple store and see what would happen if I connected it to one of their new ACDs.  At 1st, the guy at the Genius Bar told me that my MBP only supported 1280x800 as a maximum resolution.  I told him that was for my MBP screen, and not an external monitor.  Finally I convinced him to let me connect my MBP to one of their monitors.  Low and behold, looking at the Display settings pane I saw some addtional resolutions, including 2560x1600!
    So, now I have confirmed that my MBP can drive an external monitor to a resolution of 2560x1600, using just the single mini displayport connection.  I just have to figure out what's wrong with my ACD.  Suspecting that my older ACD might not support this higher resolution, I did finally discover that my model only supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1600.
    Sorry for all the confusion...

  • 2009 13 MBP can't find the HDD.

    I had gotten the gray folder with a ? mark in the middle recently.  Because the system is a little older and from what I have read here I decided to upgrade the HDD.  I installed the new disk, and booted up.  The system used the online recovery to reinstall OSX.  After the install and all updates were completed I placed the old HDD in an external enclosure and connected to USB.  The system recognized the drive and allowed me to use migration assistant to put my MBP back the way it was before it stopped working.  The system was rebooted several times and I conducted a full Time Machine Backup to my network drive over night.  This morning I tried to reply to an email and got the the pinwheel which wouldn't go away.  I rebooted and you guessed it....gray folder with a question mark.
    So if the HDD is good, (I now suspect that the old HDD was never bad in the fist place) what should I do?  Is this folder ever caused by software? Or do I have a more serious hardware problem?
    Thanks for any help.

    So here is the road I have taken so far.  I have an old Opti Bay unit that I am no longer using.  I pulled the old cable out of the MBP and looked it over, can't see any outside damage (i know this doesn't really mean anything) I placed the HDD in the Opti Bay, hooked everything up and just left the HDD bay empty with the old cable connected to the mainboard.  Pushed power and she fired right up like nothing was wrong.
    I found cable 821-0814-A on Amazon for $26 so I will replace that and then put it back together the way it should be and see how it goes from there.

  • LCD panel problem 2009 13" mbp

    Hoping for some insight to what's happening here.  My brother's mbp has been having display issues.  Initially, he brought it to me with the display totally off but it would cycle through colors when initially turned on but go black once it got into the boot process.  I thought it might've been a problem with the lvds cable, but everything *seemed* ok when I looked in.  For whatever reason though, just me verifying each connection was secure fixed the problem.  Only thing I can figure is that my guess of a bad connection must've been correct.
    Fast forward a couple weeks, and now this:
    Any ideas?

  • June 2009 15" MBP - 5400 Hitachi Drive - Long BeachBall Pauses

    I've got a new late June Unibody 15" MBP with a 5400 rpm Hitachi drive and 4Gb RAM and I periodically experience long (30 or so second) freezes.
    I suspected (and continue to suspect) Safari 4. It seems that this pause always happens while I am in Safari. When it happens it always freezes iTunes output. Sometimes other windows (like terminal or mail are fine, sometimes they are frozen.)
    When these happen, I see no CPU load. I've started monitoring iostat to see if any i/o is going on and I see i/o go to zero when the freeze occurs. (I have an external drive attached for time machine, but in the example below it wasn't actively doing anything.)

    John
