2009 imac desktop, is unresponsive,slow and error's
For some reason my imac is slow, unresponsive and error's come up.
When checking the drive, under utilities, "Drive appears ok".
I have check for virus, none detected.
I have run permissions.
And the internet loads pages slow or not at all, and or error message.
I hope there is something I can do to resolve this?
I cannot afford a new computer.
So I'm hoping someone can give me some advise.
Any advise or tips to resolve will be appreciated greatly.
Thank you in advance,
John
The anti virus was Sopho's, and I uninstalled it with app cleaner.
Unfortunately I did not follow the developers instruction for uninstall.

Want to clean and reinstall my early 2009 IMAC, but have Snow Leopard and no discs
Have an Early 2009 IMAC. My daughter (14, and an indiscriminate clicker of "OK" buttons on pop ups to get rid of them) has been using it for a year, and is it is now running very slowly, locking up, etc. I am not particularly computer savvy, but would like to do a full clean of hard drive and reinstall. Can't find the Snow leapard discs (My current OS X is 10.6.8), but want to go to yosemite to match my more current mac air. Questions:
1. Yosemite haters, I know there are people who feel that this is a risk, but otherwise this thing is pretty much an attractive paper weight.
2. I could upgrade my RAM to 8 GB (only has 2 slots being an early 2009), is that necessary? I would rather just upgrade and see how it goes.
3. I have backed up to time machine.
4. Yes, I bought a cheap PC (boo hiss) for my daughter, but at least she won't be touching this one anymore
Below is my system information from Etrecheck.
EtreCheck version: 2.1.5 (108)

Dec 26, 2014, 09:02:06 AM Self test - passedYou need to get rid of MacKeeper (Zeobit). Do not use their uninstaller, follow the instructions here ...
http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
When that is done there does not appear to be a lot wrong if you correct the red ink entries.
The 4Gb is sufficient for Yosemite though 6 or 8 Gb would be better. You may find the download slow so be prepared. -
Hi, My iMac from 2007 is slow and sometimes freezes, what can I do?
All my Software is updated and RAM is maxed at 4GB. I have used CleanMyMac 2 to clean the iMac.
I also have a problem with Wi-Fi is jumping between On and Looking for NetworksAlmost certainly that is your problem, Norton causes more problems than it ever helps. Not only is it unnessary no antivirus app is necessary. Keep your machine up-to-date using Software Update and in most situations that is all you need for security.
You can find Norton's uninstall link at:

I have a 24 inch 2009 imac. And on the desktop, the Firefox icon has a circle with a line through it(a NO symbol). When I click to open it, it tells me "I can't use this version of Firefox with my version of OS X" So i guess my question is, Do I need to upgrade my OS X(10.5.8) or remove the version of Firefox and download a newer version? Please Help!
Regardless of what OS you want to end up with, you have to first install Snow Leopard. Get it here:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After that, depending on the specs, your iMac can be upgraded further.
If you post the Model Identifier of your iMac we can tell what OS it can handle.
Apple Menu / About This Mac / More Info / Hardware Overview shows the Model ID. -
My iMac suddenly runs very slow and freezes frequently. Ideas?
My iMac has started running very, very slow and then suddenly freezes and we have to reboot. I have no idea how to fix that....
Charly,
That's not much info to go on. Sorry you are having a problem.....
I can suggest a couple of things....
Go to "Applications>Utilities>DiskUtility"
..... run "First Aid" as shown in red boxes below....
This just might help... at least it is a start.....
I routinely use a little clean/maintenance utility called "OnyX" it performs lots of good house keeping stuff...
If this dosen't help you are going to have to ask someone smarter that I am......Again, it is a starting point at least.........
Good luck...... -
My iMac starterd up very slow and when it did it has a white screen with little black dots on it

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
iCloud is not updating my desktop with new iCal and Contacts updates. How do I get the information to download from iCloud to this device?
The desktop is OS X 10.7.5. My MacBook Air is OS X10.8. iPad and iPhone are iOS6. My Apple ID on the OS devices is different from the 2 computers in that they use a .me address. Thanks to anyone who can help.OK Vicky, good clues...
See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over. See if there are duplicates, should be one for Incoming & one for Outgoing.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

Imac 2008 running very slow and unresponsive - HD issue???
I think i already know the answer to this question but before I shell out here is my issue.
I have an 2.8 Extreme with a 500gb HD. It’s the 2008 model. Ive had it from new and rarely has been switched off on the last 6 years.
In the last few week it started to slow down to the point that typing was an issue and the beach ball would spin during all activity
As my mac never really switches off I didn’t think it was the maintenance scripts but forces these via Onyx and also reset the machine unplugging everything, holding down P on restart etc etc.
When doing this the machine would then not restart, it chimed ok, but would power on to the grey screen with apple logo and then shut down. ( A loading bar would also appear)
The only way to get the machine back up and running ( in its slow state) is to start in recovery mode and load form a time machine back up - Once done it restarts ok and you can use it but it is still very very slow.
I have used Disk utility in normal working mode and it says the disk cannot be repaired and try it from recovery mode. I have run DU in recovery mode and it say the disk cannot be verified or repaired and to back up. The mac then unmounts the disk.
I thinking HD issue and was going to swap it out for one of these.

Or could it be something else?
Thanks in advanceIt certainly sounds like a hard drive failing to me. Try a Safe Boot to see if the system can repair itself
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If not the try running the Apple a Hardware Test to see if it reports an error http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 -
Early 2009 iMac is running very slow
My early 2009 is running very slow. Takes about a minute to open Safari upon start-up....even opening up folders from finder take a long time. Get the spinning beachball often. Opening websites takes 30-40 seconds sometimes....they do open eventually. I have run permissions repair from Disk Utility. Our iPad has no such problems. iMac is hardwired, iPad is wireless. I ran a report with "EtreCheck" but don't really understand what it is telling me. I have about 100GB of space left out of 300GB. Will attach "EtreCheck" report if I can figure out how!
Thanks so much for any help! Only recent changes I have made is upgrading iPhone and updating Charter Cable Security Suite.

When doing the Go To Folder portion of the Adware tutorial none of those files existed on my iMac. I will do the rest but was wondering if you can see any clear problems from my EtreCheck report. After installing Lion, my iMac Intel is very slow and need to login twice.
Tried downioading another copy of Lion to reinstall, but I get an error message stating it cannot continue. Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks.

IMac G5 is Very Slow and Sluggish
My 2004 iMac G5 w/o built in iSight is getting very slow. I maxed the Ram out a few years ago to 2GB, which helped. Alas, she is slowing down again. I have a 150GB capacity HD, with 138GB used or 12 GB free. Mostly iTunes, iPhoto and Mail related stuff on my computer.
A friend suggested that I should set-up a network drive on my Airport. Leaving all iTunes and iPhoto related files on the network and reformatting my internal drive to just run the OS.
Would this help?
ThanksIndeed it would, your hard drive should have at least 10/15% free space, you are at the outer limit. Make sure the drive is Firewire, so that if you ever want to put the OS on it, you will be able to boot from it. I suggest getting a drive that is much, much larger than your internal, they are fairly inexpensive now, and partitioning it, so that one part can be used for media, and the other to clone your system. I use SuperDuper! which does a great job.

Toolbar slow and error box flashes across screen
i noticed that when i startup my new install of mountain lion, not only does my toolbar take a while to load up and is initially missing a few icons but also a box flashes across the screen after a few seconds. I cannot read what it is because its so fast, but i was wondering what could be causing this.
i initially upgrades the software but my machine was really slow.. so i did a clean install using my external hardrive and then went in and migrated data from a timecapsule backup.
i had alot of sporadic issues with this new operating system and i am frustrated. any ideas?Hi Gulliver
Thanks again. On Monday the machine refused to boot at all. I started it from the DVD and disk utility couldn't see the HDD; took it to our PC tech support folks yesterday and asked them to have the drive out. They put it in a test machine and ran Fujitsu's diagnostics which reported no errors. On putting it back into my machine the problems appear to be solved We are guessing that there was a loose connection in the ribbon cable that connects the drive to the main board!! Reseating it seemed to solve it. I bought a second 80 Gb drive and cloned the disk, updated to 10.4.6 and am now hoping for the best. Thank you again for your attention to my problem.
Cheers

This is a known problem on Macs. Google it to find uninstall instructions, or try <http://www.thesafemac.com> which has lots of pointers on removing this kind of stuff.

You do not need anti-virus software on a Mac. In general anti-malware software just wastes resources, and has been known to slow down a Mac, interfere with normal options, and in some cases panic a Mac.
Mac OS X comes with its own anti-malware features that work rather well.
You have a lot of other 3rd party additions on your Mac, listed under kernel extensions, launch agents, launch daemons, login items, startup items. If you do not need them, you should consider removing them (genieo first and as soon as possible).
Also I would not expect

to fail, as that is Apple provided. You might consider starting up in Safe Mode and seeing if that still fails (Safe Mode does not start 3rd party additions at boot/login time)
